Upset stomach: Food poisoning, bug or pregnancy?

I have had an upset stomach since Monday. At first I thought “Oh no, I have given myself food poisoning.” I made a fall dish (a turkey/dressing bake) on Sunday that my family was not crazy about. The kids picked at it and Michael didn’t eat it all but I had a huge helping of it! So I immediately went to “Oh great I have poisoned myself.” No one else has an upset stomach in the family, although Lilina does have a fall cold.

Sitting on the couch Monday night it crossed my mind, “Oh Lord, what if I’m pregnant!?” I said to Michael, “If you got me pregnant, I am going to kill you!” Then I was trying to make him count back and help me remember when we did it this month. (You know I am bad at math!)

By Tuesday I was starting to think I have just caught Lilina’s cold, and it’s just affecting me in the stomach. I have caught a stomach bug.

I am still not feeling great today, and for now I am going with the stomach bug theory and not the pregnancy one.  However, as a woman you always have in the back of your mind, it could be pregnancy.

What conclusion do you jump to when you’re nauseous or not feeling well in your tummy? Do you immediately go to pregnancy? Do you think you food poisoned yourself? Or do you immediately go to stomach bug?

I am a very “regular” woman..if you know what I mean. However, last summer for some weird reason, I was a whole week late. Even though the chances of pregnancy are below zero (due to the “unkindest cut”), I completely freaked out. A pregnancy is NOT something I would be happy about at this point in my life. That ship has sailed!

So because of that, I never really think pregnancy when I am sick. And actually, I never did before either!

If it were food poisioning from something you ate Sunday, you would know by now…..you would be puking and possibly at the ER.

As for pregnancy, when you did it this month? You only have sex once a month??????

My guess is stomach virus….

you know you can always get tubes tied as an in office surgery.. right? it will hurt for 3-4 days and will get gas for a week but you will never have this “food poisoning” again

I just read this week: Of women over 40 who get pregnant, over 50% of them are unplanned.

If it’s just nausea I would think it’s a tummy bug. If you have other pregnancy symptoms then maybe it could be that. I tend to get tummy aches a lot so I try not to worry that it’s pregnancy.

I would imagine you use some form of birth control if you are not planning on more children? While not fool proof at least it reduces the chances.

Or Michael can get clipped…..less evasive and quicker recovery. Men need to take more birth control responsibility. It’s not just up to the woman…..

My first thought is usually something I ate just didn’t agree with me. It doesn’t necessarily have to be food poisoning. If it was food poisoning, you’d be very sick, very fast. And if you don’t know anyone with the stomach bug, probably not that either. And the stomach bug usually comes along with the really bad nausea, not mild nausea, where you can’t keep anything down at all, even water. I never think pregnant right away. Most women don’t feel morning sickness until at least 6 weeks or even later, so if you haven’t miss your cycle yet, probably not pregnant!

TWG – after 3 children, I believe I would have to do what I did and get your tubes tied although I’ve had a total removal at this point

That’s not my first assumption. Nausea wouldn’t lead me to think pregnancy especially if it’s an all day thing. I would think it was something I ate if it lasted 24 hours or less and a bug if it lasted more. Pregnancy would only come to mind if it happened regularly for a few days but quite honestly, I didn’t get ‘all day sickness’ (forget just in the morning) until I was about 10 weeks along and at that point, I would definitely know if it was pregnancy or not.

Hmmm — It’s the 28th of the month and you’re having to “think back to when we did it”? Seriously? Nonetheless, I would initially take the simple route and think “stomach virus”… Although, I must admit, the “pregnancy” option doesn’t have to be considered in my case.

I get a bit woozy when my sinuses drain, so maybe it is just Lilina’s cold.

If you were still in Atlanta, I’d give Michael a great Urologist referral.
Dr. Mark Haber at Georgia Urology.

Top notch! I was laid out for less than 36 hours.

I didn’t say once .. I said when did we do it.. that doesn’t mean once… but when the times were would matter. I don’t think its pregnancy but there’s always that small chance…. mg rarely asks howim feeling but seems vr concerned by stomach upset.

Yeah -get Michael a vasectomy and pregnancy won’t leap to mind! It never leaps tomine -so nice not to worry. I’ve also had a horribly upset stomach since Sunday night. Luckily only two real bouts of nausea but horrific diarrhea. I blamebit on some type of stomach virus/bug. I’ve had food poisoning, and that’s an insane sick! You’re not blogging or even upright -just vomiting while sitting on the toilet for 24-48 hours.

This is a sore subject for me. I seem to have a lot of accidents so end up in the emergency room a lot. Each time the question is when was the date of your last cycle. I am not regular, never have been and it could be months between cycles. I am not pregnant, there is no way I can be pregnant but every time the nurse assumes I am. I have had to go into full detail, while my husband is standing right there, as to how I can be so sure I am not pregnant. I am not having sex, there is no way I can be pregnant, then they give me the cup so they can test.

Every time my daughter gets sick, my husband automatically assumes she is pregnant. Not that she could be sick, that she could be starting, that she ate something that didn’t agree with her. Why is it always you might be pregnant???

Goodness… Anything’s possible. I’m not thinking I ever would be (having been fixed already) but if I ever did get pregnant it would be quite the shock – both to myself and my husband. But that was always in the back of my mind before, when it was previously possible that pregnancy might be the case. I would just get a pregnancy test to be sure.

Supper table conversation: Now and Then

Now:
Kid: Mom, I don’t like this.
Mom: OK, honey. Let’s throw that out and get you something you like.

Then:
Kid: Mom, I don’t like this.
Mom: Too bad. You’re going to finish it if you have to sit there all night.

Theresa, I hope you feel better. As you know my current pregnancy was far from planned. My husband did finally run out and get that vasectomy though:)! Yeah, as if it would’ve mattered. My tubes were gonna be tied this time.

I didn’t want to believe I was pregnant but I had all the symptoms. I was extremely tired for no apparent reason, queasy, and even a little sick. You know your body better than anyone else. Eventually, time will tell.

Not even gonna sugar coat it….I WOULD CRAP MY PANTS AND DIE….right where I stood if I got preggo again. I mean..at this point…I’m too lazy to even get up in the middle of the night to pee…much less breast feed or change a stinky. Jesse and I have a very healthy….um…thing going. So…there would be no need to count…we would never truly know when it happened. But I would still crap my pants and maybe even shoot him in the knee cap. If I get a sick tummy….I immediately go to the i-have-the-runs-theory. Something I ate or drank perhaps…..hell…maybe even somehting I smelled! But my already crazy…overworked…and woefully underpaid brain will never permit itself to jump to the pregnancy conclusion….ever. Like E.V.E.R.

If you don’t want kids (and there still is that “chance”), there are ways to fix that.

If you’re not trying to have as many children as possible, you’re going against God’s will…..didn’t you know that? Things like ability to afford them or your health is irrelavant. Go forth and multiply!

Well, I had no symptoms for my pregnancy except that my normally regular period was a day late and we had unprotected sex that month. Peed on a stick and whattaya know…two lines!

Theresa, just take a pregnancy test and put your mind at ease. If you’re experiencing symptoms, then you would get a positive.

Excuse me, I should’ve said, “If you’re far enough along to experience symptoms, you’re far enough along to get a positive pregnancy test. If you are actually pregnant.”
