Was ‘Kate Plus 8′ boring without whipping-boy Jon?

Editor’s Note: I am posting two topics this morning for those who don’t want to talk about Kate. Also I want to point out that I was sick in bed with a cold last night is how I caught this much television.

So Kate Gosselin’s new TLC show “Kate Plus 8” premiered last night and as the title indicates there was no Jon in the show.

Kate, along with her friend Jamie, took the kids to Discovery Cove in Orlando for a dolphin experience to celebrate their 6th birthdays.

When the show first started, Walsh was a toddler just like her six, and I really enjoyed seeing how she organized, saved money and cooked for her brood.

Toward the end, the show became more about her being mean to Jon. So without her whipping boy it was a little less interesting. I fast-forwarded through much of their dolphin experience.

The most interesting parts were watching Kate handle logistics and the every-day needs of a large group of kids – such as delays at the airport and trying to find the kids healthy food in an airport. I also liked watching her handle getting eight kids into skin-tight surf suits, which they did not want to wear.

The most compelling part of the show for me was when Madi, one of the older children, threw a fit because the little kids were getting a third birthday party. She said you celebrate our birthday on one day – not three.  It was a tough question that I don’t think Kate answered that clearly but she did try.

The second hour was a behind-the-scenes show about how Kate’s life has been since the divorce, and it was much more interesting than just following the kids around.

There were all these rumors last year about Kate dating her silver-haired bodyguard. (He is definitely hot and has what appears to be an Australian accent.)

They do seem to be very close but it seems like he’s almost taken on the job as her manager. He was directing her where to go and telling her she had to make decisions about commitments. He was basically making her to do parts of her “job” that she didn’t want to do – more like a manager than a bodyguard.  He was consoling her when she was crying but he never touched her or put his arm around her.

Oddly, Kate seemed more natural in the behind-the-scenes footage than she did on the dolphin tour with the kids.

So what did you think of the new “Kate plus 8” without Jon season? Will you be watching? If you just want to see the kids then that’s what it’s all about.

What did you make of Kate’s interaction with her bodyguard? Which footage did she seem more natural in?

Didn’t watch it before, don’t plan to watch it now. Frankly, watching someone herd the equivalent of a mini-preschool full of kids around from place to place and watching them melt down on schedule just isn’t that interesting to me, and I couldn’t care less about what she does or doesn’t do with her bodyguard.

But I do think Madi has a good point . . . good for her for confronting her mom on it!

I suspect what Kate couldn’t say on camera was that we had to throw them a birthday party here to get the free trip. — I don’t know that for certain but that’s what I suspect — Also I’m sure the divorce had something to do with it as well.

Once again, Kate whines about the paparazzi regarding the birthday party,(wanted it paparazzi-free) but has no qualms about making her kids into celebrities on national t.v so they can maintain the lifestyle to which they’ve been accustomed…..she claims she does what she does for the kids, but I am sure she is also thinking $$$$ for herself. She cannot seem to lower herself to being like the rest of us moms who make it everyday without having a show…..

I loved watching the kids, I’ve been watching the show since the first show, and I’ll continue to watch it. I just love the kids, but hopefully they won’t all turn into little Madies. I thought Kate was dressed a little skanky for a 30-something mom on her flight to Orlando with 8 kids, too short dress and ankle straps – umm no. The 3rd birthday party was for the viewers, but the kids did look like they were a little tired of cake. My favorite line was Colin saying the dance floor was gone it’s back to normal, my mom was eliminated. I thought the Kate behind the scenes episode was good, her life does look like it could spiral out of control at any time – but I don’t think she has much of a choice if she’s going to keep her kids secure and safe, with a roof over their heads, clothes, and food in the house.

I’d rather see the REAL Kate plus nannies plus personal chef plus cleaning crew plus 8. I, and every sane person out there, know Kate isn’t really raising those kids all alone. The kids have nannies(plural), a chef who prepares meals for them, a cleaning crew to keep the mansion they live in in order… the list goes on. Kate isn’t there often, she pops in for tv filming. Otherwise she’s off on tv tours, book tours, beauty appts, and all things Kate.. I’d rather see the reality than last night’s made for tv farce.

I use to love the show but not so much now. I have watched every season but now she is ALL holly wood. her hair looks fake and the clothes she puts on is over kill for the show. Dancing with the stars has leaked into Kate plus 8 show. It’s sad =-(

It’s all about Kate. If she had not constantly criticize John he would still be there. He was seeking some kind words when he supposedly cheated. It it’s not about her what’s with the hair, plastic surgery, boobs, etc.

I’m with tink… it’s not real anymore. When she first started she actually cooked & cleaned and in some way related to the average mom; she just had a brood of kids. Now they just go on trips and vacations and have a camera crew following them around.

Par and Techmom you all hit the nail on the head. It’s no longer about the kids it’s all about Kate trying to look sexy. I remember back in the day when she did look and acked like a average mom just trying to take care of her family. Then she started kicking on John then changed who and how she looked. It’s just so vary sad

If Jon hadn’t been so lazy and had the slightest ambition to get up and do something without being told to do so, their marriage may have survived. Sure, dear Kate is an overbearing control freak but with 8 kids and a husband who acts like a 9th child how could she not be? He didn’t ever really take control of the kids, he was happier when he got to be the “nice guy” and just play with them. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just play with our kids and never have to enforce rules? Somebody had to keep the family from all out chaos and that role fell on Kate.

Now…she’s somewhat turned into a serious contender for a barbie look alike contest, but I have no doubt that she loves her babies, and she is doing everything she can to give them the best life possible. The new look may be a bit over the top but she’s not an old woman, she’s in the prime of her life and if she wants to look attractive…that doesn’t make her a bad mother. What is the point of spending all those hours working if she never spends a dime on herself? We should all be entitled to treat ourselves so long as the kids are taken care of first.

I personally enjoyed how she found the time, while dragging 7 kids around by herself, to check on Alexis and then how she took her by herself to do the things she missed out on the day before. Regardless of all the “fake” that may be a part of her life now…that was genuine love for her child and nothing compares to that. I can honestly say I can’t picture Jon doing the same thing…

One more comment…

It wasn’t Kate originally who wanted to “change” her appearance…it was Jon who felt she needed an update. She was happy in her slumpy sweats covered in baby drool and who knows what. Anybody remember the episode where he took her shopping?

Like always it was about her. She’s an angry women. I was embarrassed that she wore a string bikini on a family outing. Was she auditioning for another job in Hollywood? At the airport she said she was “chill.” See, she did learn from her friends from DWTS. Pray for her children.

GEE…we watched the first episode of The Next Food Network Star. I had no idea about Kate’s new show and am not really interested.

One thing I have often thought about when anyone has a tribe of kids,

“how would you handle them alone….it could happen…”

I love kids but do not think anyone needs that many, in one family. Some are blended families and that is different. Anyone recall the Brady Bunch? I loved that show as I child ,but do not see real live families living blissfully, with that many children. I realize this is just my opinion.

I have two children and they have, at times, been a handful. Thankfully, they are on their way to their own lives now and I appear to be on the home stretch. To me, having children is wonderful…having that many….would be my worst nightmare!

I did appreciate that Kate wanted to take Alexis back so she wouldn’t the only one who didn’t get to experience that – i thought that was very thoughtful and I’m not sure I would have made the effort to do it — with everything else going on. Happy to say I’ve never watched this and never will. A show like this holds zero interest to me, and I never understood its appeal in the first place. @ T, I liked the Mom who talked about her 3 year old and was selected as captain of the team that won. I also liked the guy who wore his grandfather’s hat and fixed the salmon and the lady with the flower in her hair who was told by Wolfgang Puck, ” you can work for me…!”

I did not like the bald guy who almost got cut. His ego was out there from the beginning and I thought that was a bit much, since he had only been selected and not yet even competed with others who were obviously also there for the same reasons.

My daughter felt it was sad for Alexis (?) who was eliminated, due to what he was told about his beignets ( sp?)

Even though she would LOVE to get to the point where she would be on the show, I could NEVER handle the stress of watching her. I am anxious just watching those last night and feeling bad for them.

What was up with the lady with the scratched cornea? also, I talk with my hands but that one guy was a hoot…his arms were flopping all over.

This is one tradition my daughter and I have…we try to watch the show together every summer.

I watched it for about 15 minutes and lost interest. I feel sorry for the kids, they lost a some what normal childhood., a mom , a dad, a regular house, school, normal things they will never experience. Kate has made a lot of money, and she has a lot of money, she could buy a smaller house, she’s got her van, go back to being a nurse, get child support, and try to give those kids there life back and pray it is not to late. I also feel sorry for Kate, she looks so trashy, and she is addicted to all the attention, and it does not matter what the cost is. She has gone HOLLYWOOD, and that is not a good thing.

Depending on the nursing job, yes, she could probably make enough to take care of her kids, especially if Jon paid child support. There are A LOT of nursing jobs (some hands on, some not).

I grew up in a blended family with six kids. Dad worked, mom did not. Somehow, it managed to work out! And no, Dad was not a super college educated man raking in the big bucks. We lived in a small town.

And, to put it in perspective, I believe at the age of 30, they had 6 children 10 and under! I surprised any of us survived! It wasn’t always pretty, but we made it through.

If she truly wanted a normal life, she could have it, but she’d have to sacrifice many of the things that she has (cook, nanny, etc.)

So you honestly believe it was just Kate and her friend at the park with the kids. Sure it was. Even when it was J&K, there was a nanny, professional chef, housecleaners. Kate stopped doing it all by herself a long time ago. Her show is no more reality than the Real Housewives of Atlanta.

So, no, I didn’t watch. The sooner we all stop watching, the sooner those 8 kids can go back to some semblence of a normal life.

@MJG -I completely agree about your first post! In fact, I’ve always thought people who just have baby after baby are suffering from what I call “The Brady Bunch” effect -meaning -it looked like great fun when they were kids and watching the t.v. show (just like 8 is Enough and others), but in reality -NO! Hello -that’s a lot of money, work, no private time, etc. It IS different if you have a few and you re-marry and they have a few, but I don’t get the desire to have huge numbers of kids for many reasons.

Never watched this schlock. Given my views on having too many kids -I don’t believe we should encourage it by watching their shows and making celebrities out of them. From what I’ve absorbed out of constant inundation by entertainment media -she’s a B**** and he’s a T**D -hopefully their kids will be better than a sum of mommy and daddy.

I agree with Jen – with all the people dumping on Kate, where is the same venom for Jon when it is obvious he checked out of being a father a long time ago. What real dad goes and gets a 2 bdrm apartment when he has 8 kids???? Yes, Jen I do remember the episode when he took her shopping.

Mary

8 separate pregnancies…would be a lot, but she did only have 2, which is probably on par or even less than many posting here. It isn’t her fault that in wanting one more baby she ended up with six more. I also feel there is nothing wrong with large families should a person decide they want a lot of children, my grandmother had 17 babies. It wasn’t so unheard of then because people got by with a lot less and children didn’t need ipods and cell phones before starting preschool.

JJ

June 7th, 2010

Mary – It isn’t her fault????? She took fertility treatments and KNEW what she was getting into. Then she realized what it would cost to actually raise 8 kids, and approached SEVERAL “reality” show executives, until she hear a $$ amount that she liked.

There is nothing wrong with having unlimited kids as long as YOU can pay for them, educate them and take care of them, without someone else footing the bill. I only had one kid, because I knew how expensive they are and I couldn’t afford more than one child.

JATL

June 7th, 2010

@Mary -yep, I think people who have in vitro and then refuse to reduce if they have over 3 viable embryos are beyond irresponsible. Everyone loves to watch the TLC and Discovery shows about the few whose pregnancies and babies all turned out okay -but have you ever watched some of the shows where the parents refused to reduce and had 6 babies where 4 or 5 of them died and the others were so disabled they barely have any quality of life? I have! I’m a firm believer in if you want to play with science and play “God” -then you need to be prepared to take it all the way. I get REMARKABLY irked at the people who want to play God when they can’t get pregnant, but then think it’s all God’s will if all of their babies are dead or deformed or they wind up with tons of kids and that it would be a sin to reduce. Either do it or don’t! If you’re bothered by reduction or abortion -don’t have IVF in the first place -why don’t you adopt a bunch of kids who have nothing and no one? And it’s TOTALLY her “fault” that she wound up with 6 babies on her second pregnancy! It’s not like they were naturally conceived.

Our grandmas had tons of kids because they didn’t have adequate birth control, babies died fairly often back then and often large families were needed to work the family farm or business. The money I was referring to has nothing to do with iPods and cell phones -it has to do with food, a large enough home to house them all, clothing, college savings and perhaps actually giving your kids some experiences like travel once in awhile. What if 5 kids need braces? How about health insurance? More people need to think about how much children cost!

Paula

Children’s lives should be a form of “entertainment”. Also, why do you think Kate cannot raise her children’s on a nurse’s salary? Nurses can make a good salary, plus, despite what you read, Jon does pay child support of $21,000/month. However, Kate might not be able to afford the 4 nannies, 2 bodyguards, personal chefs, and spa trips on a nurse’s salary, but then, again, why does she need all of that?

Kate Gosselin is an insult to the “REAL” single mothers out there trying to raise their children “BY THEMSELVES”. Shame on her and shame on those who continue to give this woman a second of anyone’s thought.

Jen

June 7th, 2010
1:22 pm

I want to clarify that I am not saying Kate deserves a “mother of the year” award and can do no wrong. The woman is a drama queen and has let ‘fame’ definately get to her head! But she shouldn’t be persecuted for making a living to provide for her family and criticized for not being there with them all the time. How many of us have the luxury of staying home day in and day out with our children? In today’s society most families require both parents to work just to get by, meaning they’re not home with their children, and luxuries are few and far between. I say good for her that she can give them not only the essentials, but also some of the luxuries life has to offer, and still have time to spend with them even if she isn’t there 24/7.

As for the bit about nanny’s and personal chefs, i’ve seen nothing to actually support those claims but if I could afford nanny’s and personal chefs, i’d probably jump at it too. Who wants to spend 2 or 3 hours preparing dinner if they could be doing something else? lol

Paula

Hey, if Kate, wants to go all out to make money – go for it. Nobody is saying she should not. But, making the money should not be done on the back her children. Those children are the ONLY reason Kate Gosselin is “infamous”.

I thoroughly enjoyed the new show and it was much better without JG in it. If anyone truly believes Kate can raise those kids on a nurses salary they are completely delusional. Shift work, overtime, etc. and no time with the kids. Why does anybody actually think it’s their business what she does for a living or for that matter what kind of chair she seats them in at the table? It’s her business what she does for a living and her business how she seats her children at the table. Get a life people. If you don’t like her then don’t watch the show. The show is boring without Jon. They are trying to have Kate’s bodyguard take over the position of the man figure and I can understand why but the show has lost the interest of most people I’m afraid. Kate is just too much into herself and what she can get free and it’s just sickening. The kids are going to be the ones to suffer in the long run.
