Why NOT fill out your Census form?

I’ve heard a lot of complaining about filling out the Census forms, and I can’t quite get a handle on why people wouldn’t want to turn in this information.

The Census form includes several explainers in the paperwork quoting a federal law and reassure people that their information will not be turned over to the IRS or any form of law enforcement. So I guess people are worried about being turned over the IRS or immigration or some other law enforcement agency.

I’m not sure how realistic that fear is if there is a federal law stating they can’t share that information with any other agency.

From the U.S. Census Web site:

Protecting your information

Federal law protects your information, and we have developed policies and statistical safeguards to help us follow the law and further ensure the confidentiality of your information. 1

“Your Information Is
CONFIDENTIAL
We never identify you individually.

1. Federal Law

Title 13 of the U.S. Code protects the confidentiality of all your information. Violating this law is a crime with severe penalties.

2. Privacy Principles

Our Privacy Principles are guidelines that cover all of our activities. These principles encompass both our responsibilities to protect your information and your rights as a respondent. They apply to the information we collect and the statistics we publish.

3. Statistical Safeguards

Statistical methods ensure that the statistics we release do not identify individuals or businesses. These methods include extensive review and analysis of all our data products, as well as disclosure avoidance methodologies such as data suppression and modification.

We recognize the value of your trust, and we believe that when you answer our surveys we must serve as caretakers of your information. If you would like to learn more about how we fulfill this responsibility, please visit our data stewardship pages.”

They do warn not to give out your Social Security number to anyone saying they are a Census worker and also warn about other scams. From the U.S.  Census Web site:

“Phishing:

‘Phishing’ is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, social security numbers, bank account or credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out by email and it often directs users to enter sensitive information at a fake web site whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one.

Other Scams:

  • The Census Bureau does NOT conduct the 2010 Census via the Internet
  • The Census Bureau does not send emails about participating in the 2010 Census
  • The Census Bureau never:
    • Asks for your full social security number
    • Asks for money or a donation
    • Sends requests on behalf of a political party
    • Requests PIN codes, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.

How to report scams and bogus Census web sites

If you believe you have been contacted as part of bogus or fraudulent activity falsely representing the Census Bureau:

  • In Person Scam
    • Check for a valid Census ID badge
    • Call your regional office to verify you are in a survey
  • Email Scams
    • If you think it is a bogus email, do not reply or click on any links within the email.
    • Do not open any attachments. Attachments may contain code that could infect your computer
    • Forward the email or web site URL to the Census Bureau at ITSO.Fraud.Reporting@census.gov.
    • After you forward the email to us, delete the message. You will not receive a confirmation email after forwarding the information to us. However, the Census Bureau will investigate the information and notify you of its findings.
  • Mail Scams
  • Contact the United States Postal Inspection Service

I personally think it’s cool to have a snapshot of our country at this point it time. You can look book at the Census reports through our history and see how our country has developed and changed. Plus don’t you want the correct number of representatives and services geared toward your community’s needs?

I filled out our family’s Census forms last night and will be popping it in the mail today. It wasn’t painful and took about five minutes. Our biggest discussion was what to list Michael’s and the children’s race as. (I usually fill in mixed for the kids at school but that wasn’t a choice. But you can mark more than one race so that’s what we did. )

So will you be filling out your Census forms? What is the worry or concern in doing so? What am I missing here?

I know it says that they won’t use this info or share but how many lies does our government make? If you’re a liberal, for 8 years all we heard about the evil Bush regime. If you’re a conservative, well we’re hearing about all that Obama is doing. The net result is that there is really no reason to believe that the census bureau can make the promises they are making. If you’re a liberal how could our government just transform from an evil regime to a good just gov’t when in all likelihood, 99% of the employees never changed? Our government showed no problems in interning Jap Americans, how did they find these people? In a time of national security why wouldn’t the other branches of government intervene into the census data for national security?

This census falls under the obama administration. I will do NOTHING to help him out or support him. Even if the census actually has nothing to do with that Socialist obama

I have read the form multiple times. NO WHERE on the form does it give a deadline that you return it by. It states “The Census must count every person living in the United States on April 1, 2010. NO WHERE does it state that you have a DEADLINE to mail it back.

What good is counting the legal public with the census when you have 12 million undocumented citizens? How did the government come up with 12 million?

Some may feel that Georgia does nothing for them so why should they do anything to help Georgia? All the arguments about benefits to the community fall short on people the community has forgot. So a small punch back is don’t get counted. Who knows? Maybe.

My thing is if this is used to count the people in this country, or redistrict or apportion federal funds to districts, why does it matter what race I am? Or gender or anything? That shouldn’t matter at all.

Recently, I found the 2010 Census form hanging on my door. As I began filling it out, I came across a dilemma. The U.S. government wants to know if my children are adopted or not and it wants to know what our races are. Being adopted myself, I had to put “Other” and “Don’t Know Adopted” for my race and “Other” and “Don’t Know” for my kids’ races.

Can you imagine not knowing your ethnicity, your race? Now imagine walking into a vital records office and asking the clerk for your original birth certificate only to be told “No, you can’t have it, it’s sealed.”

How about being presented with a “family history form” to fill out at every single doctor’s office visit and having to put “N/A Adopted” where life saving information should be?

Imagine being asked what your nationality is and having to respond with “I don’t know”.

It is time that the archaic practice of sealing and altering birth certificates of adopted persons stops.

Adoption is a 5 billion dollar, unregulated industry that profits from the sale and redistribution of children. It turns children into chattel who are re-labeled and sold as “blank slates”.

Genealogy, a modern-day fascination, cannot be enjoyed by adopted persons with sealed identities. Family trees are exclusive to the non-adopted persons in our society.

If adoption is truly to return to what is best for a child, then the rights of children to their biological identities should NEVER be violated. Every single judge that finalizes an adoption and orders a child’s birth certificate to be sealed should be ashamed of him/herself.

I’d really like to know how Uncle Sam wants adopted persons will sealed identities to answer the race question. Does the U.S. Government want us to lie or does it expect us to be psychic?

I am not sure if you people know this, but people are used as barter tools for several reasons. They might want to use this information to trade, get loans, form racial demeaning demographics, or several other reasons.

The census is a shame now. If you want to be controlled and twisted to this governments end then fill out your form. If you think this government is happy go lucky and they wouldn’t do anything to honest folk like you well then in the small perspective your right, but you have to look at the big picture. It is about freedom and morals. This country doesn’t need to know how many whites live in this area or mexicans in this area and split us up, or other things they will use and sell this information for.

David S, you made this comment on 3/23 at 08:03

“In 1915 Census data was turned over to the military to go after draft dodgers.”

Fact – You’re full of it. There was no draft until May 18 of 1917 when the Selective Service Act was passed by Congress. In addition, it was impossible to be a draft dodger until June 5, 1917 when the FIRST registration took place.

QUIT SPREADING LIES!

I didn’t fill it out yet as it doesn’t have a due date on the form.

I don’t want any more Representatives in Congress. We have 435 now and look at how they collectively screw the taxpayer. They have spending bills written that they haven’t read(our spending bills are written by bureacrats that weren’t elected). These charlatans provided us with “cash for clunkers”, “cash for caulkers”, and even “cash for golfcarts”……golfcarts!!!!

I don’t want anyone in prison to be counted so that taxpayers monies will be spent on them.

I don’t want to allow the count of dummies who buy homes financed with option ARMS such as “minimum payment” or “interest only”. If you want to speculate, use your own money and you don’t vote.

“Fair Share” is a term used to fuel the greed of deadbeats who pay NO federal income tax. Analysis of the 2009 income tax revenue will show that slightly below 50% of people filing pay ABSOLUTELY NO federal income tax. When a majority of tax filers pay nothing, then they don’t care whose taxes get raised because it won’t include them. This causes our representative democracy to fail.

If you don’t pay FEDERAL income tax then you shouldn’t be allowed to vote for anyone for a FEDERAL office, period. That goes for anyone on welfare and food stamps(you can have the choice of getting your entitlement and not voting FEDERALLY or no entitlement and FEDERAL voting).

I don’t want to be used in the gerrymandering of taxpayers for the benefit of taxeaters.
