Darn you Girl Scout Cookies! Why do you mock me? Why do you tempt me every time I walk past the dining room? You are so luscious and sweet, and I want to eat you all. But instead I am sentenced to pack you up in individual bags and deliver you to your new owners — who will then gobble you with delight! I will try to be strong you 166 boxes — minus the three that we’ve already eaten since we picked you up yesterday at 3 p.m.!
Do you have Girl Scout Cookies coming to your house? Are you packing them up for delivery? How fast do you eat them? How do you stop yourself with that many boxes sitting around?!!

I didn’t order any this year. I still have a box of Thin Mints in our freezer from last year. I did see three groups of Girl Scouts selling cookies at one shopping center yesterday (three different store fronts). I didn’t feel too much guilt shaking my head “no” since I had my hands full carrying a toddler. That was my “out” last year, too – hands are too full to stop and buy any boxes.
When I do get cookies, I throw them in the freezer. Thin Mints may not take long to thaw, but they are too hard to be eaten straight from the freezer – so it removes the easy access element.

We actually all do it together — both big kids are very good at organizing and pulling the orders — Dad is not so good because he is color blind!! The order sheet is color coded and I swear he messed up several of the orders last year!! — I was going to start writing out waht each person owed so we can staple it to the bag – but I’m just sitting here looking at these cookies!!!! they’ll all help when they get home from school but in the meantime l …

I never order or eat them (but then I rarely eat sweets.) Cookies are simply wasted calories. Anyway, GS cookies are overpriced, just like any fundraising product. I don’t mind fundraisers, but I don’t want the product (whatever it is)… just the tax deduction.

This is the first year in 12 years I haven’t been overseeing Girl Scout cookie sales — odd! My daughter called me from college and told me that her boss’s daughter is a Brownie and was selling, and wondered if we wanted any. We did! :-)
For those who think that they are overpriced — yeah, they are. And it’s shocking how little of that money actually goes to the troop. Most of the proceeds to go the Council, and cookie sales and Annual Fund donations are basically what keeps the Council operating and serving over 45,000 girls and almost 10,000 adults, including the wonderful camps and programming, as well as adult training.
For those of you watching your weight, most troops were collecting donations that could be sent to soldiers overseas, or given to the V.A. Hospital, or even local fire departments, etc. So if you didn’t want to be tempted but wanted to help, that was a good way to do it (and still can, at booth sales you’ll see).

I LOVE Girl Scout Cookies. Last year we got a bunch and put them in the freezer until after our wedding (I wanted that dress to look GOOD!). THis year since I am pregnant, I can’t wait to get them and not feel bad about enjoying them since I have not gained much pregnancy weight.
We did not order many boxes this year. My step daughter told us nothing about them and never brought an order form. I think her mom did all of her sales, which my husband and I do not agree with. We finally did add 3 boxes to her order once last call went out and used her not asking us about it as a learning experience on responsibility and accountability. Theresa, I think it is great that the whole family puts the orders together.

I know I am not the only one to feel this way but I guess I will be the one to say it. I will NOT go shopping during Walmart / Publix / etc when the tables are set up and you are being attacked by the cookie monsters that stand out there…If I did not buy the cookies on the list from the parents that very nonchalantly lay it on my desk at work… I am not going to buy them every weekend while you stand outside the stores.

@Theresa…”How do you stop yourself with that many boxes sitting around?!!”
1. Only eat them in front of a mirror naked (now granted some of the fancier places frown on this)
2. Keep a list of all the blogs topics you’ve posted here how unhappy you are with your weight.
When I’m dieting (which is always to keep the weight off), I keep a picture handy me at the beach several years ago at my WORST and when that plate of nachos is on the table or chips and salsa, I look at the plate, then the picture. It takes about 3 glances and we have a winner. It’s a better appetite suppressor than any pill.

BTW – I think someone else pointed this out, but you can donate the cookies. My Girl Scout’s troop is giving their donated cookies to a Domestic Violence center for women and children in Lawrenceville. A lot of the girls mail the cookies to troops. Ask your troop when you see them. If you like the cause, donate a box.
Girl Scouts are a wonderful organization. Worth every penny and calorie in my opinion. :)

Hi, Tiger. I agree that we do need groups like PETA around to remind some of the other bipeds on the planet that they need to be humane. Julia also gets a thumbs up from me on the call that they are too extreme sometimes. I have been a vegetarian (okay, if it weren’t for Vermont cheddar I would be vegan) for decades now, but I do not judge others for what they eat of wear.
Cookies was the topic, but my earlier post never made it on the board, but here is a summary. I do not eat them. I am disturbed by the women in my office who are girl scouts — well, I guess their daughters are and the moms just do all the work. Whatever. I hate having to modify my schedule to avoid grocery shopping during the prime times to get attacked…and I do not appreciate the dirty looks from the hovering moms when I do go to the store in daylight and politely decline to purchase GS cookies.

JJ I am all for hunting snakes. The less there are of them the better. My eldest saw a Moccason at camp last year. Mr. Jim pulled it out of the boys cabin (where it was curled up) and put it in a tree. They showed a picture of it in the slide show at church…you should have heard the congrgation GASP and fidget!! My eldest decided they don’t bother her. When I take her to camp I am on high alert for those suckers, and no I am not going to be a couselor there. She is told clearly to be on alert too (moccason and rattler and coperheads are big in Perry GA). The kids are not allowed to wander too far and she said they are shown how to check the cabins/bunks for them. ME? I would be up all night in a well lit area (like the Holiday Inn).

Spiders don’t really bother me, unless they jump out at me and scare me. Then my first reaction is to kill them. I had on live in my cabinet for a about three weeks. We had a talk and I told her as long as she stays on her side of the cabinet (under) we would be just fine. One day she jumped out at me, and well, that was it. She broke our agreement. Dar and Julia, you’re right, the girls can sometimes be a mite enthusiastic, but they shouldn’t be interferring with your access to the store. If they do, you should let the store manager know, who will quickly speak to them. But would it kill you to just smile and say, “No thanks, but good luck!”? Believe me, the girls are very used to being turned down — don’t think you are the only one! Most moms smile and remind the girls to watch their manners — if you’re getting glares, it might be because you’re glaring, too.
It’s pretty brutal out there at a booth sale — lots of no’s (which have to learned to be accepted gracefully), making sure the girls can make correct change, the lady who asked you to save the last box of Samoas for her and then left by a different door to avoid you (when you could have sold that box three times over), the unruly little boy who knocked over a display and banged up a dozen boxes, making them unsaleable (and the mother didn’t apologize, just said, “I told you not to touch them!” and walked away, and the weird man who walked up to older Girl Scouts (Cadettes) and accused them of not being Girl Scouts because they weren’t wearing the green Junior or brown Brownie uniform to the point of actually sending a cop over to check our credentials! Or the man who tried to pay for one box of cookies with a counterfiet $100 bill (we used one of those counterfeit pens on bills $20 and over). Or the slightly odd lady who lectured the 7 year olds on the fact that they were all going to end up fat and diabetic because of cookies. Or the obviously substance-impaired man who got mad at the girls and started to cuss them out because they had sold out of Tag-A-Longs (”You stupid little b…” ended up getting an adult (me) in his face very quickly and backed off with a meaningful, “Sir, you need to just leave. Now.”) Then there was the lady who brought a half-eaten box of cookies up to the table and said that she had bought them the week before, but didn’t like them and wanted her money back — from us. Okkaaaayy . . . A few people are nuts, some people are just having a bad day and get a cheery “Have a nice day!” anyway, and most everyone else are nice. That’s life.
Sorry, but I guess I’d have expected a little more tolerance from people on a parenting board towards girls who are taking their first steps in commerce. Just ask yourself what you would want these girls to learn from you — that people are mean? Or that most people are nice?

Dangled in your face? The ones around here just have boxes sitting on a table, not even at eye-level. Much like the boxes sitting on shelves in aisles and the cashier line inside. @HB – these littel girls run at you when you approach the front door of the store. Same with the Sub and Boy Scouts selling popcorn, etc. I have a guilt complex and it is nearly impossible for me to say “no” even though I do not want or need the items. Normally, I will just hand them a $five and call it a donation….but then they hit you again on the way out of the store! Maybe I am in the wrong, but whenever my child has been asked/forced/bribed by prizes into selling something for school or another organization I just ask “how much are you really looking for?” and write a check as a donation. Bugging friends and family to buy candy/cookies/wrapping paper/trinkets just isn’t my cup of tea….

Becky, that’s been my experience for the most part too (occasionally one might run up to me, but no biggie), and I don’t have a problem politely turning them down if I already have bought my yearly supply of Thim Mints and wishing them good luck with a smile. They’ve never looked heartbroken by my turning them down.

I am a long time lurker, but never post. However, being a Girl Scout leader, I have to chime in.
Many people may not realize that all of the money we get for our troop comes from the parents, donations and product sales — cookies. We do not get money from council or any other source. We must rely on the generosity of others to keep our troop going.
As for cookie sales, booth sales are our lifeline for sales. Many girls do not get out and sell in the neighborhoods. First, some don’t allow it and second, many people can resist an order form, but really want the cookies when they see them. We setup about 10 booth sales a year and my girls are lectured before they go on their behavior. When someone tells them no thank you, my girls say thank you back to them. They do not chase down people and they are not overbearing. Quite frankly, they don’t need to be. People actually thank us for being there. Many people do not encounter Girl Scouts and do not have a “source”. In fact, we sold close to 100 boxes, just sitting in a parking lot waiting for our parents to come pick up their cookies (I refuse to drag 4,000 boxes to my house, so we meet in a public location). We had people coming up and buying them buy the case. I still wonder what people do with a case of Thin Mints.
And for the record, the girls are not just doing this for the prizes…at least not in our troop. The girls know it costs money to do things and help out others with service projects. They know how much we earn from each box and they have sales goals. It is truly a valuable lesson for each girl out there selling.

“I still wonder what people do with a case of Thin Mints.”
We open one box immediately and start munching, freeze a few to enjoy the rest of the year, and take the rest to work to sell at cost to our fellow apartment-dwelling colleagues who also lack an ordering source. It’s actually become a tradition in our office — first one to find a booth, brings in extras for the rest of us to buy. Always Thin Mints. Thanks for supplying us!

bamaakt – this is not the atlanta site but this program is just like the programs at school and no I am not bashing those either, I just choose to not participate but this link shows some of the “incentives” for the children to get the largest cookies sales they can. I like that even tough guys like Duff McKagan from Guns n’ Roses aren’t immune to the spell of Girl Scouts and their cookies! http://bit.ly/9Z65uD

Some of you people are insane. How did this blog get from talking about Girl Scout Cookies to Peta & snakes. Anyway, I don’t eat a lot of cookies, however I do like to support the Girl Scout and their efforts to teach the girls. I my daughter was a Girl Scouts for the past 3 years (didn’t do it this year for lack of time) and I was the cookie mom for our troop. Money is used to help girls offset the cost of summer camp and other events. It keeps them busy, encouraged but more importantly off the street getting into trouble. One of the reasons mom did a lot of the work was for safety reasons with door to door sales. This year the unit took a new direction and is encouraging girls to go door to door with their parents. Therefore I ordered 15 boxes and I donated them to local fire departments in my area.

Well, I tell ya — they are SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE!!!
As the Fulton County Service Unit Cookie manager, I spent 2hrs in the warehouse receiving, counting, sorting, and RECOUNTING nearly 18,000 boxes last Friday morning! Then we spent the following 5hrs dispersing them to 30 Troops here in Atlanta. Amazingly, I did not crave the cookies then. Maybe it was because of how cold it was and how busy we were.
However, within minutes of picking up my daughter’s own order that evening and getting home, I had already torn into a box of DULCE De LECHE! What a joy…. My 9yr old grabbed a box of TREFOILS and my 7yr old grabbed a box of LEMON CHALET. The following morning, before eating anything else, I simply couldn’t resist opening a box of SAMOAS as they are my weakness (along w/ THIN MINTS)! As it is, my 18yr old will come home this weekend and find her favorite 2 flavors lying on her pillow. =)
Be sure to look for us in your neighborhood or visit the website, http://www.gsgatl.org to find a Girl Scout Cookie Booth near you!

Awesome leader: I don’t know how you do it! My daughter was in from Brownies to her Silver Award, and we never got over the temptation! Even with going to “Keebler Grasshoppers” and “Nabisco Nutter Butters”, when GSCookie time rolled around, we’d still have to order several boxes for ourselves.

They are so evil! This is about the time of year that those of us who are trying to lose weight are at a crucial junction – we’re tempted to “throw in the towel” – we’ll never lose those 30 lbs by summer – and then along comes the next wave of temptation after the on-slaught of Christmas – Girl Scout Cookie time – followed by Easter basket temptation – it just never stops. I think the girl scouts should sell fruit from Harry & David or something – that’s what this country needs – not another thing to make us fat!! :)

Did you know that 100% of all proceeds go directly to your local council? No other non profits can brag of such a track record. The girls who knock on you door, and who sell at your store fronts learn multiple skills that they take with them through life. Did you know that 17 of our 17 lady Senators were Girl Scouts? Did you know that the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois and their community have raised 100,000 packages of Girl Scout Cookies to send to our troops in war zones! God Bless our Girls and God Bless each local Girl Scout Council. Doing the right thing for almost 100 years! Thanks to all who support the girls of their community.

After looking at 111 cases and another 13 cases on top of that, you get will power to not even want one cookie. Not to mention the work and keeping your mind delivering over 600 boxes with your daughter. I am so ready for this to be over, I am going insane. lol

I agree with the Girl Scout Guy. It seems like the scouts are the only ones who send to our troops over seas, of course not including the family members who send items over seas as well. Not to mention you see the Girl Scouts standing outside selling in the snow, rain, cold, and whatever else the weather decides to do.
