I am concered about the crib I have. It's has a drop down side rail and I have had no problems with it. I called this place and they told me it's not one of them but I don't know what to think. I bought it second hand and he told me that I shouldn't of done that. My other crib is one of them that they are recalling. I don't know what to do.

I purchased a storkcraft chelsea 4-in-1 crib with drawer for my precious granddaughter born 03/09. It is one of the cribs "being recalled". I/we NEVER received notification of the 1st recall in January 2009 which was for the same problem - drop down malfunctions - there are still people who have not received the "repair kits" from requests in January. Additionally,we have not received any info (other than sparse news coverage) about the "new" "recall" regarding this death trap - I am assuming the second recall was ordered due to the additional deaths/injuries. Storkcraft's web site has been unavailable, their "800" numbers are unaccessible (even at 1 am EST). We certainly can not wait for a resolution as we are talking about "Infant Entrapment and Suffocation Prompts Stork Craft to Recall More Than 2.1 Million Drop-Side Cribs, per CPSC, Health Canada, and Stork Craft are aware of 110 incidents of drop-side detachment; 67 incidents occurred in the United States and 43 in Canada. The incidents include 15 entrapments; 12 in the U.S. and three in Canada. Four of the entrapments resulted in suffocation: a 7-month-old in Gouverneur, N.Y.; a 7-month-old in New Iberia, La.; a 6-month-old in Summersville, W.Va.; and a 9-month-old in Bronx, N.Y. Included in these incidents are 20 falls from cribs; 12 in the U.S. and eight in Canada. Fall injuries ranged from concussion to bumps and bruises. The cribs involved in these incidents had plastic drop-side hardware that had broken, missing, or deformed claws, connectors, tracks, or flexible tab stops; loose or missing metal spring clips; stripped screws; and/or drop-sides installed upside-down.

CPA says "do not put your child in this crib", but too bad about your problem (i.e., children being murdered in their sleep due to malfunctioning cribs...) but is not doing one single thing to help all of these parents (who are probably NOT in a position to buy a new crib). Why would anyone believe a kit, which can not even be obtained, created by the creator of the death crib would be adequate? Every person who has one of these should IMMEDIATELY be given a safe crib...no questions asked, too bad about the "cost" to the manufacturers...what is the cost of a baby murdered in their own (safe?) bed? I am desperately searching for a non-drop down side crib...good luck friends - I can find millions of the cribs that we know are being recalled but not any safe ones - well, any safe one under $400.00 - that is probably fine for those who can shop 'In the nicer stores (not Target & Walmart but rather the baby stores), but for the vast majority of us, that is not an option.

My heart bleeds for these parents who lovingly placed their precious baby in their crib only to find the "safe place" wasn't safe...I don't think I could handle it...

And BTW, there are certainly some really odd posts here - what the heck is "red china" (our government through "free trade" has made sure the US public buys cheaply made, unsafe and untested items - can't really blame another country for that...)?, and although some may be shocked, there really, really are people who live in this country who can not afford to shop "in the nicer stores (not Target & Walmart but rather the baby stores)." and, I assume there are some of you who don't want to think about it, but "The American People" post is accurate and they are simply trying to get information out to a group of human (parents) who should care about the world.

Good luck to all and I wish your babies safety.

Angie,
Angie....Just a thought... if your crib happens to be one of the cribs that isn't in the recall, or is too old to be included, is there a way that you could somehow permanently attach the side in the upright position? Maybe bolt it together? It might be a bit of a pain, and not look beautiful, but they aren't in their cribs forever and that would give you peace of mind, be safer & save you the cost of a new crib. We are on a tight budget too, so I totally understand. Take care. Kelly

Ok I am concerned with this dropdown side crib recall......I have one that my older daughter used and now my 1 year old has been using.....and I have several times walked in the room and the dropdown side is loose and she is standing there almost falling over...........and I have another one in storage as well......if they knew that this was a hazard and kept selling them and decided not do anything about it......well now they have to pay the price of replacing them.......too bad......I can't inmagine having my precious child die because of a crib.....where they are suppose to be the safest.....My heart goes out the the parents of the children that have passed away and injured.......I am so glad that those parents are making us aware...in order to prevent our children from getting injured or dying....

@ MaryKay

I think YEah OK is talking about your statement "LOTS of cribs are available without such a side. More are usually in the nicer stores (not Target & Walmart but rather the baby stores)."

Although I will agree that YEah OK did not have to curse.

@YEah OK - and what are you talking about?

Someone working at a store putting together a bed for you isn't nearly as concerned about getting it right as you would be. That's just a fact. Deal with it.

BTW - you're the one cursing at people on a blog, doesn't that make you actually the "uppity" one?

I have a drop down side crib that we bought in 2007 for our first son and now our 6 month old is using it, haven't had any problems, but if my crib is one of the ones being recalled does anyone know what they are planning on doing, it's not like everyone can afford to just go out and buy a new crib..I feel it is their mistake and just like any other recall whether you have the receipt or box they should replace your crib free of charge!!
