I might add that now that I've had babies, I drink skim milk, I weigh 128 lbs and 5'7", continued whole milk could interfere with my weight.

I personally think that skim chocolate milk should be an option as there are some kids who will not drink milk otherwise. I'm 31 yrs old and the milk choices in my school were whole milk and chocolate milk, and yes I was the odd ball who got the red carton of milk everyday in my 13 yrs of school and continued to love it in college, I see nothing wrong with good whole milk, kids need more activity/excerise in their regimen. My 3 girls are 8mos, 20mos and 3, my 8mo old is still breastfeeding but my 20mo and 3yr old love white milk, have never tried chocolate milk!!!

Cow milk isn't really that beneficial as the Milk industry makes up think. Almond milk, non-GMO soy milk, a bag of mixed nuts is way better for digestion and healthy than cow milk or flavored milk. I moved to Taiwan 3 yr ago, and learning about their diet. Kids drink water at school, no juice (some take juice) and no milk. maybe herbal tea. Nuts have so much calcium and better absorbed by our body than cow milk. My kids stopped drinking milk at about 4 yr old. I was afraid they weren't getting milk, but now I realize. who cares, cow milk isn't really that good for the body anyway. They drink water, maybe some juice, and fuite smoothies, and kids herbal teas, and yogurt drinks.

just something to think about. It doesn't really matter if they don't drink milk, as long as they get enough exercise and greens in their diet.

Since when do I need a science degree to know that having my kid's eat a pop tart with chocolate milk isn't as healthy for them as a banana. I've been there! You take what "they" say hook, line and sinker and then common sense comes in to play...plus a bunch of moms that set you straight!

BTW had breast cancer over eight years ago at age 38 and thankfully at that time discovered Jane Plant's book called Your Life in Your Hands. Basically a no diary diet has prevented a reoccurence for me. So...cow's milk is made to take a calf to a cow in less than a year and the last time I checked...our 6'3" 16 year old son doesn't have any hooves. And the dairy industry wants to spend $1,000,000 to keep chocolate candy beverages in our schools?

Soy milk is fine. Next time "they" tell you it isn't safe ask why a bean would be more dangerous than another mammal's milk that has articifical growth hormones added and your tumor is hormone receptive.

p.s. China Study is a great book too. Basically Dr. Plant's (she had breast cancer 5 times) premise is that 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will experience breast cancer during her lifetime and the rate is 1 in 100,000 in China. There's no dairy (i.e. cheese, milk, yogurt, etc) in the rural Chinese diet...ever!

Sorry to be so sarcastic but I just lost another friend to breast cancer...and still silence on the relation between nutrition and cancer!

Huh? Doesn't chocolate milk have more sugar than most candy bars? Since when do I need a science degree or a clinical study to tell me that eating a banana is better for my kid's than another mammal's milk with added artificial growth hormones and high fructose corn syrup.

Wake up America! Take a look at your child's school lunch menu...water is not offered as a beverage choice but four types of cow's milk is! Wanna know why? Because the federal government sees no nutritional value in water. Wonder who funded that study?

Oh my god, Vork!
I KNOW!!!
I go to Lassiter, and what infuriated me is that the year they made all the soda's diet they brought in a coffee, AND ice-cream vending machine.
what the HELL is that?

I think they need to revamp the ENTIRE school food system.
Not just chocolate milk.

I love it! I just found an article that says that Cocoa mixed with milk MAY help prevent heart disease...

Here is the link: http://dailyhealthtips.vitacost.com/dm?id=3156B66357EECA4C274E3A55DE005F15

Of course kids aren't that old, yet...and it was unsweetened cocoa...

"The researchers also found that the cocoa powder group had an increase in HDL cholesterol, which can help reduce levels of LDL cholesterol and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties."

Personally, I don't drink cows milk. I stopped drinking it over 30 years ago when my dad stopped getting fresh, unpasterizedk, whole milk from our neighbor's dairy. All milk bought at a store, even the so called whole milk, is all just flavored water and if you have ever had real milk you wouldn't drink that garbage either. Store bought milk is just plain nasty, even a brand new, just opened container of the stuff tastes like it is spoiled to me! The only milk in our house is soy milk and low-fat chocolate milk. Personnally, I prefer not to have any milk in the house, since we can't get milk directly from a dairy, but the kids like it and I would rather give them soy and chocolate milk than sodas! At least they only drink 1 glass of either the soy or the chocolate milk most days at home. At school, sometimes they drink plain milk, sometimes chocolate, sometimes the juice and even occasionally water with their lunches.
