The Party City circular that arrived in our Sunday paper had an interesting grouping of costumes for teen girls.
While I think they were advertising a witch costume for teen girls what I saw was a hooker witch costume for teen girls.
The Batgirl costume also appeared to actually be a Hooker Batgirl costume. The Sailor, devil, milk maid, pirate, Red Riding Hood and even Raggedy Ann all appeared to be working the streets with ridiculous short skirts and some revealing bust lines. Just FYI, the Pocahontas outfit covered the most skin. Here’s the Web site so you can see what I’m talking about.
I’m not trying to say this is Party City’s fault. It just happens to be the Halloween costume circular I looked at. But it is a problem over all in society.
I think it was the movie “Mean Girls’ a few years back that said Halloween was when teenage girls got to release their inner slut. I personally think that’s pretty scary!
(Here the actual quote from “Mean Girls”: Cady: [voiceover] Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.)
How did Halloween become the holiday to look trashy?
What do you think of the teen girl Halloween costumes that are mass produced and available in stores? Do you think they are too revealing? Are you shocked by what you see teen girls going out in on Halloween?
What are your rules for costumes, especially for teen girls? What is your teen daughter going out as? What are some good costumes that won’t make them look they’ll be working on a corner later that night?

Next time your at Party City take closer look at the selections. This has been going on for the last 4 years that I recall. It’s this type of costume selection that make it difficult to explain to my 10yr old daughter that certain outfit are just not appropriate. Parents must be buying this crap if it keeps coming back year after year.

Easy solution: Don’t buy the costumes. They’re hideously overpriced, anyway, for the cheap little bit of ill-fitting fabric that you get. We always made our costumes — I sew, so we always enjoyed going to JoAnn’s early in October and picking out a costume. My daughter enjoyed the medieval princess looks, so she was usually covered from the chin down to her ankles, and I got to enjoy playing with some really interesting fantasy fabric! The shortest costume she ever wore was a Power Puff Girl costume she wore to school one year — I made the pink, blue and green dresses, and they bought the short wigs and white tights — they looked adorable!
And, BTW, it’s not just the Halloween costumes that make teenage girls look like sluts, when clothes in the stores are tight-fitting and scooped down to their navel!

We have a culture that glorifies the “slut” appearance whether it be in teenage girls or women in general. Go ahead and thank those wonderful examples like Brittney and Madonna, navel rings, tramp stamps. Our culture has made a trashy appearance central to popularity. Good luck trying to reverse it.

The purpose of Halloween is to dress up one day a year like something you are not. It’s not like girls who wear these costumes dress like this all the time. And if these costumes didn’t sell well, they wouldn’t show up in the circular or on the web site in the first place. This is how real life is, adapt or die.

No wonder this country and indeed the world around us is going to hell-in-a-handbasket. Adapt or die, you say…I say you’re already dead in more ways that you can possibly understand.

Theresa, I totally agree with you. The costumes are too risque for girls. They are even marketing them in the small sizes (7 to 8) and those are for younger girls not teens. I find it very disturbing.
I certainly don’t agree with the adapt or die mentality. It is that type of laissez faire thinking that has undermined the roles of parent and child. I am a firm believer that if you don’t stand for something, you will surely fall for anything.

This is not just a Halloween problem as one poster already noted. I recently saw a young girl about age 8 wearing Juicy Couture sweatpants. How did I know? The word “JUICY” right across her bum was a dead give-away. Am I the only one that thinks inviting the public to stare at your pre-pubecent girl’s a$$ is beyond bad taste and bordering on bad parenting?

It doesn’t help when the school approves ridiculously short cheerleader skirts either. When I was in high school, we had a strict 3″ above the knee limit (a little too strict for some of the taller girls), but an exception was made for cheerleaders who wore their uniforms to class on game days. Their skirts barely covered their, um, assets…

It’s not limited to Costumes. Teen aged girls have been getting sluttier and sluttier every year. Short shorts that say “Juicy” on the butt…..Even the little kids are tramping out…..low riding pants, make up at 9 years old.
So instead of bashing Party City for slutty costumes, go complain to JC Penneys, Kohls, etc. AND go ahead and blame the parents that allow their girls to dress like tramps.

Indeed, Mary. This is indicative of a societal problem that started with the whole ‘moral relativism’ craze that changed how parents taught their kids. Parents are to blame… and to some degree the cretins above are right… market pressures drive this sort of thing. But that doesn’t make it right…and it doesn’t make it something we have to just ‘take’ or ‘deal with.’

So if I am to understand some of you correctly, you are saying that since these scraps of cloth masquerading as costumes are available, being marketed to impressionable girls, purchased by said girls, and (presumably) approved by their parents, turning preteen and teen girls into objects is fine with you? Wow. I assume you don’t have daughters, because if you did, you would loathe the message these costumes send out to the girls (your body is an object to be shown off rather than respected).
Girls need to know that their sense of self-worth cannot be suspended one night simply because of a date on the calendar. The implicit message they are getting (especially the younger girls) is that if they can dress like this, even for one night, there’s nothing wrong with showing their bodies off for the other 364 days. Halloween doesn’t change who you are. The girls know that, and believe me, the boys who see them in these costumes know that too!

I don’t think this phenomenon is limited to Halloween. As many others have stated, look at the racks of clothes for girls these days? Better yet, take a look at the kids coming in/out of high school and middle school!
I realize that there are “trends” that come and go. I think as parents, we should be responsible for stopping some of them. Yes, kids have their own ideas, BUT, we buy the clothes! You can still be trendy without looking like a “ho ho”!
Why go to Party City for a “pre fab” outfit? How about using your imagination to create your own?
Vork is right when he says “sex sells”. However, as a parent, it doesn’t have to sell for your child!

Teenagers are exploring their sexuality through clothing?!?!
Surely this is a brand new phenominon! Surely we are the first generation to think that our children are wearing inappropriate clothing!
I bet that half of the women here complaining were told by their very own parents that their clothes were inappropriate and at the time they probably felt like their parents “just don’t get it”.
Its a part of growing up to explore the things that your parents object.

Amen to those screaming this is not just with Halloween. Trying to find my 10yo step daughter clothing for church and the annual father/daughter dance is a nightmare. Thank goodness she wears school uniforms-I am all for those and used to be totally against them. All of the fabric for girls this ageis cheap looking and the look is hooker chic. To find more modest “preppy clothing,” I end up spending a small fortune. I bought her 2 dresses last year at Hannah Anderson and I got them a size too big so that she could wear them this year too. Polo and J Crew make decent looking stuff, but again it is expensive. Target has the most age appropriate clothing at the best prices, but it is tough to find. Thank God she is a little tom boyish and not into the trashy look for the most part. She did ask for a ho dress for the father daughter dance last year and that was quickly vetoed. She ended up in a simple black velvet tank dress that covered everything!
My husband would make her dress like an Amish girl if he had his way, her mom and I both prefer more conservative “preppy” clothing for her but it can be a little more stylish than the Amish look. Good luck to all you moms fighting this battle. It is awful out there…

Where do you draw the line on dictating what other parents should be allowed to let their children do?
I mean, for some people, the line might be a revealing outfit on halloween, for others it might be reading Harry Potter.
Its one thing to say, “not in my house” and another thing to say, “not in anyone’s house”.

Oh, and BTW, Cady wasn’t condoning that “slut” attire in the Mean Girls movie. She dressed as a zombie bride and was shocked at how the other girls at the party were dressed. One has to wonder who is calling the shots in the purchasing department when it is time to decide which new styles will make it on the shelves. Some parents buy this junk, because there are not many choices. Last year I tried to buy jeans for my then 5 yr old, and most of the stores had snug fit hip huggers.(for a 5 yr old!!)I have to scour the racks to find things that are not trashy. There are some sick people that enjoy looking at 5 and 6 yr olds dressed like Hannah Montana with hip huggers and belly button showing. A few months ago my daughter pointed to black lacey outfit which looked like lingerie. It was a size 6X. Unfortunatley this style is being pushed on us, because choices are limited. The material being used for these outfits is also cheap.

I agree with the attempt to slutify our little girls with the pretext that its Halloween. Sadder, though, are the people who accept it and are desensitized by it. It’s irresponsible and easy to pass the buck to the parents who buy them , or to hide behind the First Amendment, or to say if you don’t like it don’t buy it. Someone’s got to make a stand and say something even if, and especially, when it won’t be a popular opinion.
When you see shows on TV glamourizing scantily clad toddlers, and you see half-naked teens on magazine ads, it’s no surprise we have so much child abuse and molestation epidemic in this country. Everyone prefers to look the other way, pass the buck, it’s not their problem, it’s protected by First Amendment, etc. I think the Founding Fathers of this country would cringe if they saw how Americans are abusing the First Amendment to basically get away with everything to fulfill their own selfish needs and not care about the moral decay in society. Unfortunately, we are already starting to see the consequences in our society of such condoning and permissive attitudes. The Roman Empire fell because of similar attitudes, and it’s not too late to stop our country from decaying from within. But we must speak and act now.

Slutty halloween outfitts are for co-eds not teens. Here’s an idea don’t let your daugter dress like a slut, be an adult and set limits, draw the line and be firm with them. When they go off to college they can look like a hooker on Halloween if they want to. As for them being in the stores, they wouldn’t be there if people weren’t buying them. Turns out there’s a lot of younger women that think it’s cool for one night of the year to dress like a hooker. I think this party tradition may mirgrated from fright fest in Key West, but that’s just my two cents

Fine. Make a stand for something, but is this going to be it? Is this where you want the line drawn? What about people who feel that its not far enough? That girls should not be allowed to wear anything but a uniform until they are 21?
Ridiculous? Well, some people feel just that strongly. And others feel that girls should be able to wear whatever they want.
Same thing with the books kids read. The same thing with the toys they play with and the music they listen to, and the games they play.
And as far as the the Roman Empire falling because of permissive attitudes; many people felt that the Roman Empire fell due to citizens no longer paying attention to important issues because they became distracted by trivial interests. Now, that could never happen here.

If you can’t find a costume suitable to your tastes in today’s world then I am sad for you. Yes there are plenty of risque costumes out there for adult women and girls but those of you picking on a single flyer that came out really need help. Again this is a non-topic. There is a market for it, either you buy it or you don’t.
We have much bigger problems in this country than sex or the way or woman or man dresses. The human body is what it is, either cover it or flaunt it those are you only choices and that can only be done by you as an adult or for your children as an adult. Who are any of you to tell a person other than kids what they can or can’t wear? Also you have no business telling another parent how to dress their kids. As a father of a soon to be six year old daughter she wouldn’t be caught dead in this stuff, however I am sure there are other parents who would dress them up in it and I know some of them. That is there right in this wonderful country we live in.

@Mike in Miami: “The Roman Empire fell because of similar attitudes” – You, sir, just like to say random garbage just to inflate your puritan, holier than thou views that you wish to push on people. The last time I checked, the Roman Empire was a time of artistic elegance, with the nude male and female form being cherished and celebrated. Also, the last time I checked, the fall of the Roman Empire had nothing to do “permissive” attitudes. It had to do with religious, conservative zealots becoming so self-righteous while forcing their beliefs down others’ throats that the empire was torn apart.
Seriously, go move to the middle east where women lose life and limb for letting their hair show let alone a harmless comic book hero costume that shows some skin for one day of the year. You’d probably like it better there.

Leah, you must have been looking at a different website than I did. The skirts on the outfits were almost all too short, the tops were very skimpy.
I think the most disturbing one actually was the Raggedy Ann one. That was just wrong.
What I think is sad is that today’s girls have been sold a lie that says they are ‘freer’ when they show off a lot of skin. They don’t realize that this really just objectifies them in the eyes of most men instead of empowering them. Bowing to the popular culture is not actually giving up some of your own control.

By the way, I love how it’s totally cool for female children of all ages to wear 2-piece bathing suits at the pool, in their front yard, at the park fountain, etc., but it’s “slutty” and morally wrong for a 16 year old to wear a superhero costume or a witch costume with a short skirt. I’ve seen pictures of teen girls wearing less at the swimsuit section at Target.

Be outraged. Don’t buy this crap. Say “no” to your kids. They will get over it. You, as a parent, are not their friends. They have friends. Who are their own age. You are their parent(ts).
I am so done with hearing and watching parents say “well, they wanted it and it was only xx$, so I gave in. We were in a hurry.” or “They say it is what their friends are wearing.”
So if their friends were wearing slut clothes that would be OK, and if their slutty-clothes-wearing friends wanted to jump off a bridge, because all the kids are doing it, that would be OK.
Because you are raising friends who are actually sheep and we all know what happens then – the sheep follow the leader.
You are responsible for what you breed.

So how old are the ‘teens’? I think at 13 or so they should not be out pestering the neighbors for candy. They can be at Halloween parties in somebodies basement, den or wherever.
I told mine I am not buying costumes this year. Check the dress clothes pile or your closet and come up with something. They both have some interesting ideas none of which include showing belly-buttons. It is too cold for that most years anyway. We all love costumes shoved over bulky coats or coats covering the costume right?

I have to admit that if I had a daughter in her early teens (i have a young son thankfully), I would be uncomfortable with her wearing most of this stuff. But I also have to admit that my wife and I are going to our Halloween party as dorothy and the scarecrow…and my wife looks really, really good as Dorothy in thigh highs, heels, and pig tails (I’ll never watch the Wiz of Oz the same way again!). Not too slutty, but juuusstt enough to make my heart skip a beat at this alter ego of my proper soccer mom wife. She doesn’t have a problem with it, she knows she looks pretty good, and I don’t have a problem with my wife showing herself off a little. I honestly see nothing wrong with it. I don’t think she’s setting a bad example for anyone. On the other hand, its leads to a question regarding this topic. There is obviously an age where a girl is too young to wear one of these costumes and it not be a little creepy…..but there is also an age where if you can get away with it, you should feel no shame in going for it, IMHO. So where is the line drawn? I really don’t have an answer, just thought it was an interesting thought.
One other thought for those who are expressing their outrage now…”Lolita” was published in 1955, the movie hit the scene in 1962. They were scandalous and ENORMOUSLY popular. That’s a full half century of society’s fascination of slutty teen girls….and I’m sure I could find lots more dating back even further….I should check my bible….I bet there are some juicy examples there. I’m not saying it’s right, I’m just saying that to be outraged now is a little late in the game.

Any credence to the idea that these girls are dressing like their mothers? With more and more single moms dressing trampy, the girls see it as acceptable. Just MHO

I think some of you are confusing sexually explicit costumes for adults with the ones for children. Adults can wear what they want — I don’t care if an adult dresses provocatively, because presumably they can weigh and accept the consequences of their actions, even if it’s just in fun.
But for children? And young teenagers? It’s creepy, sexualizing a young child in such a way, and encouraging them to think of themselves in such a way. Parents who permit it or think it’s “cute” won’t think it’s so cute when their 15 year old comes home pregnant, or they are having to deal with an oral STD, because, after all, sex is CUTE. And they are the same ones who will roll their eyes and ask plaintively, “But where did they get the idea that it was alright?” Parents are supposed to teach and protect their children, and not allow them to display themselves in such blatantly lewd inappropriate ways.
I don’t care who is buying it, and I don’t care who is selling it. That doesn’t make it right. The human body is beautiful, but there is a time and place for that beauty to be enjoyed.
Interesting, though, how none of the guy’s costumes seem to be tight fitting at the crotch . . . because THAT’S “gay”.
Pfffffft.

Jeff I think it depends on the single mom. I am one and I do NOT wear clothes that look painted on or that show my belly button on purpose!
Even if I did look like Heidi Klum I would not do that.

BTW as a Mom of girls it is difficult find decent clothes for them to wear. I do it.
Oldest had shorts on the other day, and I said, those go in the good will stack kiddo. She got huffy, so I asked her how she would like me to get a pair just like them. The pants went on the stack.

My kids dress for Halloween the same way they dress for any other day of the year…repsectfully. These moms that dress like a wanna-be Pam Anderson are the ones I blame. If a parent dresses as if their BFF is a pole…what the heck do you think their kids are going to do? Have some respect ans pride please. Do not dress like a trollop. Everyone has a belly button…we don’t need to see your’s. It isn’t special.

lmno your right. I am guilty of having been told certain clothes were inappropriate. A particular mini-skirt comes to mind. However I had the good sense to obey my parents.
Why is that children are in such a hurry to grow up? I am not just talking sex (especially since I was close to 20 before I had any). I mean wearing clothes that made me look like I had boobs well before I did. Or thinking that I should be in make-up.
Yes it is back to haunt me now with my daughters, but like my parents did with me, I get veto power! Too short, too tight, to whatever and out it goes. Both my children know if I see words printed on their butt they are in trouble. They say they find those shorts tacky!

It isn’t just costumes for teenage girls, but women in general. The majority of costumes for women are overtly sexual and revealing in nature.

There’s a simple solution – until your daughter is on her own or old enough to take responsibility for her actions, she needs to follow the law of house and her parents. Who cares what little Debbie down the street is wearing, just worry about your own kids and their well being, and let little Debbie’s parents worry about her or not as they so choose.

Really? That’s great that you get payed to talk, because I, and I’m not alone on this one, would pay you just to shut up.
It’s easy to talk about something you know a lot about but you, my dear, have this annoying knack of talking endlessly about topics that you clearly have no business discussing because you add nothing of value to the conversation. And you add insult to injury by dragging on your belabored point for several paragraphs.
Seriously? I mean can’t you make your point in less than 1000 words? You lose my attention after the first paragraph.
By the way this is what is called constructive criticism, I’m not hating on you.

@ Vork….put your money where your mouth is…..how much are you willing to pay me?
You can send the check to Theresa ( she knows exactly how to reach me) and when I receive it I will let everyone know on the blog that you are willing to pay me more to shut up than those who pay me to talk. It would be wonderful to be paid not to do a thing, I will even leave if you pay my ONE DAY rate. I need a new sofa/loveseat and that might work.
FYI…I am not cheap!
As far as I can tell. this is a open mic and anyone can “talk( ing ) endlessly about topics” .
I am a MOM and I am thinking the title of the blog contains that word.
To me, SHUT UP is hateful.

Really? I’ve never been ‘forced’ to read anything MJG has posted, ever. There are some folks that post here that I don’t care to read, so when I see their name, I skip to the next entry. Pretty simple really.
