I have used pickling alum as well as Dawn (or Dial) to wash my son's mouth out when he talks back to me or uses inappropriate language. I only put a small dot on the tip of his tongue and make him stand with his mouth open in front of the sink. It's worked more than once to curb his dirty mouth behavior and I haven't had to use this method for awhile. I also pop his behind to get my point across if he refuses to behave, and have used a spatula sometimes to swat his rear. My mom grabbed a belt, or washed my mouth out and I'm still here to tell the story. I have also made him do yard work (pull weeds etc.) for refusing to do his lessons at school. I will Not tolerate any blatant misbehavior at school, his teachers are there to help him and others learn so I stand behind them everytime he purposely misbehaves. He has learned that I have a Zero Tolerance level when it comes to propler behavior at school.

I use Rainsoft bar of soap. My kids are 9 ,7 and 5. I leave it in their mouth for a minute and I don't let them swallow it. Rainsoft is a all natural bar of soap, no chemicals. So, for all the parents who say you wouldn't wash your kid's mouth out with soap because the soap has chemicals. Would you use the soap if it didn't have chemical? I still think you would say no. I use this method and my kids haven't ever been sick and it works. The point of a punishment is to get your point across. Whatever they kid did or said wasn't not going to be allowed. Every child is different though. A time out might work for some kids but for others a bar of soap will do. You just have to find he right method (that doesn't harm your child) that works for your kid. I wouldn't put the bar of soap in my kid's mouth if I thought it would hurt them. Some of you say you rather spank your kid or slap them in the face then give them soap. Spanking my kid's isn't the first type of punishment I go with, but there are the times it is needed. Your worried about chemicals in your child's mouth, but your not worried about leaving marks on your kid from spanking them or depending what your spanking them with bruises. Not to mention the emotional issuse the child could have he or she gets older. I am not saying I don't think parents should spank their kids, whatever method works for you, keep doing it. But the parents who keep saying that the bar of soap is harmful and the parents who do it are stupid...now you know a bar of soap that doesn't have chemicals and is safe to use for mouth washing. You really don't have any other reasons not to use soap besides the chemicals.

I washed my daughter's mouth out with soap recently. Well, not actually. I rubbed some Safeguard on her lips and teeth. She hated the taste, gagged a little, and ultimately changed her attitude. It worked for us, but I don't do it often - only on occasions when the "normal punishment" doesn't cut it. Sometimes it's the only thing that works.

Sorry if that offends those who choose not to punish their kids. I'd rather do it now than have to deal with the tougher consiquences later.

As noted above soap is animal fat so you might as well go to your local farm grab a pig or cow and cut out its day mix it with chemicals and force it into your childs mouth as for physical labour that's crule and if you wash out your childs mouth for liying or cursing then to renforce your point then if you do the same then you should be exapected to put up with the same punishment and are how you feel about it just give them a time out or remove privlages don't physicaly punish them and they can choke on soap or vomit and they could inhale it and die its madness

Human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves

Our mom washed our mouth out with Octogon soap for language infractions. I still remember what it tasted like. This was a common discipline in the South. Probably why we all learned real quick to say Mamm and Sir to all adults. I used it a couple of times on my kids for spitting or saying cuss words. They all survived.
