I ran across an interesting story on Yahoo last night about an Indonesian woman who delivered a 19.2 pound baby!
The woman delivered the child by C-section. (Thank Goodness!) The baby boy was 24.4 inches long! Here’s the full story from USA Today.
Apparently after the story ran on the Today show, Yahoo showed a huge spike in people searching for “19 pound baby,” “indonesian baby,” and “heaviest baby ever.” The Yahoo editors conclude that people love to brag about having big babies. (I couldn’t get the Today show clip to load but you can see it on the Yahoo link.)
My brother loves to tell everyone how big his babies were. He is so proud that his son was over 10 pounds and his daughter was just shy of 10 pounds. They were big ole babies and my sister-in-law is tiny!! My sister-in-law’s tailbone was knocked out of place delivering her first child, among other things!
All of my babies were right around 7 pounds. I can’t imagine trying to pass a 10-pounder, and I’m a heck of lot bigger than my sister-in-law!
So how BIG was your baby? Did you have C-section or vaginal delivery? Did it mess you up later? (Keep it clean folks. This is a family newspaper.)

My son was 8 lbs. 7 oz., 21-1/2″, and towards the end of my pregancy, he was pressing on everything. I cannot imagine carrying a 19 lb baby!
I had a section and went home after only two days. No problems whatsoever.

My children were 7lb 8oz and 7lb 11oz respectively. Both vaginal. I am only 5′1″ so I’m not sure my babies would fit if they were much bigger.

Mine were 10, 9lb 5 oz, and 9 lb 4oz. The middle one was 22 inches–looked like a string bean. Had a lot of trouble having them (24 hours of labor for each), including broken tail bone, damage to the bladder, uterine infection (me)dislocated shoulder (1st one) and dislocated hip (3rd one). I actually lost weight and weighted 20-35 pounds less after birth. After the 4th month, I could (and did) eat anything I wanted. Too bad that did not last! Never was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, but I am (as you would predict) diabetic now (over weight, over 40, babies over 9 pounds).
My kids (all adults) are all of normal weight and height. The girls are about 5′4″, the string bean is about 5′9″ but only weighs about 130 pounds.

Interesting, mjg. My kids are all high IQ. Does it have something to do with having had plenty of gestational nutrition and less likely to be the children of smokers?

On the height thing: my eldest daughter was 36 inches tall at 12 months, but is 5′4. The orthodontist predicted when she was 12 that she would be 5′9. She is still mad about that.
I think if I had had a premature baby it still would have weighed close to 9 pounds!

Am I the only one that thought that baby looks like a miniature sumo wrestler? He is big — he looks 3 months already.
My first was 6lbs 12 oz and a breeze to birth (no episiotomy). My second was 8lbs 13 oz and delivery was much more difficult — including coming out not breech but facing the opposite direction…N & M I can’t remember if that means face down or face up but being a labor nurse you would know—all I remember is it hurt like he%% and 7 years later I still believe there are parts of me (kidney/back) that will never be the same. The second was brought on 3 weeks early, I shudder to think how much bigger that child could have been.
The oldest (9) is in the lowest percentile for height and proportionate in weight—52″ and 58.5 lbs. The youngest (7) is 50.5″ and 49lbs–height is above average and despite grazing all day on healthy food, doesn’t put on weight (dad’s metabolism is like that too) so the doctors have ordered her to eat ice cream several nights a week. On the other hand I am supposed to limit eldest’s ice cream in take….anyone got ideas on that one????
Becky–My Mom said that the double the height at 2 thing is more likely a wives tale than medical fact. They were spouting it back 40 years ago. Told her that I would never make 5 ft since I did not grow for almost a year. I am 5′6″ and until 5 years ago I was a solid 135. Now I am overweight. For the last 5 years I have been single parenting. With the new studies on stress and weight loss I am wondering if that is part of why it is so difficult to take the weight off and keep it off.

As to the 1946 study in the United Kingdom: There were variables in play other than weight. The UK suffered wartime shortages all through the ’40’s. It’s likely that large babies came from affluent homes and had all the advantages that went with their economic level.
I’ve seen reports of other studies from the ’30s and ’40s – they were just then determining that deprivation at different points in the pregnancy would have different effects on the baby.
And it’s not an accusation to state that doctors will test for diabetes if your baby is over 10 lb. Just the facts, ma’am.

my kids all got 1 pound bigger each time…1st was 7 then 8 then 9…last one was 6 weeks early and weighed almost 6 pounds..docs said she would have been close to 10 pounds if not 10 if she had gone the last 6 weeks..none of them or i have diabetes…and they are all very intelligent…and i smoked some with the 1st one…mostly or totally quit with the rest….(i have thanked God many times my last one was 6 weeks early:)

9lbs 4oz, 11lbs 7oz, and 6lbs 6oz. No C-sections and no clue the first 2 were as big as they were! My littlest at birth is now taller than my other 2 were at her age. You never can tell….

“Team leader Brian Smith, a volunteer from Florida, said he took 12 workers to a house of a man five weeks removed from heart surgery Saturday.
‘When we showed up, he was out digging a ditch to deflect the water,’ Smith said.”
Theresa was the ditch-digging heart patient your brother????? No matter whom he is he needs to take it easy, his stuff can be replaced and many of us out here would help him/his family. He cannot be replaced.

Enter your comments here My aunt was 13 pounds when she was born. She was a pear-shaped woman with a flat stomach and huge thighs. My maternal grandmother was a short woman of not more than 5′3″. OUCH!!!!

My baby was born 11lbs 8 oz. I delivered him vaginally and could say it was a very successful delivery , and he is average size now maybe a lil bigger but still normal.

Mine were 11 lb, 14 oz (and, nope, not diabetic) and 9 lb, 7 oz. The little one looked like a runt. I asked the pediatrician several times if he was okay. LOL
My family does grow big babies, but even for us, 12 pounds is a bit crazy. I really worked hard (more exercise, better diet) at having a small baby the second time, and I was glad that it worked.
