Do you care if your kids hear Obama’s speech at school?

I got a call on Thursday from a mom friend who was in full outrage. She’s making her plans to keep her kids out of school on Tuesday so they are not forced to listen to President Obama’s planned podcast to school children about education.

She was told by her school she could send in a letter stating that she didn’t want her kids to participate and they wouldn’t have to listen. But she’s afraid of reprisals within the school system. Also one of her children has an African-American teacher who she is afraid of offending.

So she’s planning to keep them home sick and no one will know exactly why.  Although she’s hoping one-half of public school children won’t show and that will send a message.

If you have no idea what my friend is talking about here’s the background on the story:

According to the Department of Education:

“At 12:00 p.m., Eastern Time (ET), September 8, 2009, President Barack Obama will deliver a national address to the students of America. (Please note that this is a change from the originally scheduled time.) During this special address, the president will speak directly to the nation’s children and youth about persisting and succeeding in school. The president will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning.”

“The U.S. Department of Education invites students of all ages, teachers, and administrators to participate in this historic moment by watching the president deliver the address, which will be broadcast live on the White House Web site (http://www.whitehouse.gov/live/) and on C-SPAN at 12:00 p.m., ET. We also encourage educators to use this moment to help students get focused and inspired to begin the new academic year. The Department of Education offers educators a menu of classroom activities-created by its teachers-in-residence, the Teaching Ambassador Fellows-to help engage students in the address and stimulate classroom discussions about the importance of education.”

I’m not sure why the Department of Education is calling it historic, when according to The Dallas Morning News President George H.W. Bush gave a speech to school children during one of his terms. (Maybe they mean the technology?)

But as Jay Bookman explained yesterday folks are upset about this:

But as the Christian Science Monitor points out, the right is all aflutter:

“Schools have used students as little lobbyists on everything from illegal immigration to gay marriage to anti-war activism, and most recently, [c]ensus collection,” (Michelle) Malkin wrote. “Will Obama be able to resist issuing a call to youth arms to marshal help in passing his legislative agenda?”

Meanwhile, the conservative radio host Dana Loesch has launched a campaign urging parents to keep their children home on the day of Obama’s speech. In an email urging against the “Socialist Indoctrination of Americas children,” [sic] Loesch explains that Americans must not “mind our Ps and Qs and blindly follow their directives”:

“That’s not the manner of governance upon which this country was founded – it is quite the opposite; even the hobbyist Constitutional aficionado appreciates this. So yes, keep your kids home on September 8th and teach them that the power of America rests in the hands of its people, no one else.”

My girlfriend hadn’t heard that cry to keep kids out of school. She thought she came up with it herself.

What do you think: Is there questionable intent by President Obama or just a pep talk at the beginning of the school year? Will you keep your kids out of school? Will you ask that your child not participate? Do you fear reprisals at that school or if that note is put in your child’s permanent record?

The speech will be shown on the link at Noon on Tuesday.

The question that is raised in my mind is “What kind of message are we sending to our kinds when we say not to listen to the leader of our nation? If they don’t have to listen to him why should they listen to the teachers, police officers, or their elders? Part of the problem of this country is that we teach children to disrespect authority by parents going to school to fight teachers and parents fighting referee’s at games. Let’s get past the race issue the color of his skin not going to change for the rest of his life. He is now the President of the United States give him the respect JFK ,Carter, Bush, Eisenhower, Clinton and all other president before him got just because he was the President.

I would hate to say the President’s race has anything to do with it, but “it does.” His agenda, yes, but his race is the main factor. This is no different than the 1950’s and 1960’s… Go, look it up. I watched the movie “The Express” on HBO the other day and it brought out the hatred that some whites express towards people of color…sad, very sad. People picketing, shouting, fighting, spitting… just mean spirited. Compare those photos from that Civil Rights era with the photos many of the people are displaying around the country at these town hall meetings about the President. It’s a shame.

quoting from an earlier post –
“To argue that government bailouts is Socialism is total unvarnished nonsense. These bailouts for GM and the Banks are not part of some evil plot for the government to take over. Think about it….if you were an evil government dictator, would you take over the WORST automaker and the WORST banks? I can just hear them now “oooooohhh man, we own GM now, we’re all set!” The worst products on the planet, a pension liability larger than the GDP of Europe, and they lost $1.1 Billion in the first quarter of 2009. Sorry, that just don’t flush. If our mean scary president were taking over the world, wouldn’t it make a teeny-weeenie bit of sense to take over Apple Computer or Exxon-Mobil? Exxon made $40 Billion in profit last year? Or to take over the drug maker Pfizer…$20 billion profits last year? Think about it.”

LOL – watch out there, Ima – some of these folks might actually try to wrap their minds around that – and they’ll strip some gears!

This whole thing is just wrong. Adults are acting like the children they are so worried about protecting from being “brainwashed”, they didn’t get their way so they take their ball and go home. Funny, if you disagreed with Bush you were un-American or a traitor, but anything goes now against The President. All the adults are doing is making a mockery of our whole system. Personally, I think these people are doing way more damage to our country as a whole than Obama could ever do. To think that I spent a good portion of my adult life serving and protecting this country for what, to allow these idiots to tear down everything we’ve fought and sacrificed for? Thanks for nothing.

After all these years people still think that they can say or do anything when it comes to a man of color. Let’s forget for a minute that he is the President of the United States. Let’s forget for a minute that this man has our best interest at hear, Let’s forget for a minute that we say we want our children to learn, grow up with their own opionions of what they’ve learned in schools. Just remember if we don’t take a stand now to turn things around for our children….where will they end up? Education is important….important for all of us.

Anyone still trying to ride the pony that President Obama is not a US citizen loses all credibility for any type of argument they are trying to make.

Why is it that if anyone goes against Obama we’re automatically considered racist? So, all black people who didn’t vote for McCain, they’re racist as well….right? It has to be this way because good lord, we know there’s no double standard out on there on race relations, right. We know that if a white person penned the email about the Atlanta mayorl race, it would have been okay to do so and not a single person in the black community would have found the same email from a white as racist. Right? I don’t care for a slew of white people that are in congress today, so am I racist there too? His race means nothing to me; his out of control spending and his arrogance however do. Blacks must grow up and face the fact that we have the right to not support anyone and not have our decisions appear to be predicated on race. For Gods sake, give us some credit.

Hey Ashamed,

I see more blacks that demonstrate hate for whites than I do the reverse anymore. The Malcom X’s of the world. The Hip Hop world. Kane West & Jamie Foxx making racial undertones in their talk.

The main reason that Barry got elected because so many non-taxpayers came out and voted based upon skin color rather than substance and the like.

The bottom line, I do not have a problem with someone in office giving a pep talk for kids to stay in school.

However, Barry has a lot more issues to deal with right now rather than taking the focus off the ball and placing it with the kids.

His administration has done ZERO for America!

The blatant disrespect afforded to this President is a tell tale sign that racism and prejudice is alive and well in this country. I remember having to sit through the Regans’ (both Nancy and Pres. Regan) Say No to Drugs and it is my understanding that Pres. Bush has also addressed the nations school children. What’s the horror, folks? Is the horror that a person of color was elected to the nations highest office? Is the horror that the Pres. wants to address children about doing their best, getting an education and becoming a productive member of society like he did? Is the horror that other children of color might hear and live by the Pres. words and actions and achieve as well? For those who oppose Pres. Obama addressing the nation’s school children, did you oppose Regan and Bush as well or is this especially reserved for this particular President?

My replies to your ignorant posting. Damn you are dumb.

I am sorry. You are right…Hitler wasn’t a Communist. He was a Totalitarian. The definition works for Obama just as well, now that we have that cleared up.
***So you just pulled the ole “wow, you’re right, I’m wrong so I’ll make my argument more ridiculous to prove myself correct” method of debate. They use that one over and over in the playground.

And yes, the socialism and communism does apply still for Obama…including sharing the wealth, equal ownership, etc. That tends to create two classes – a wealthy upper and a poor lower. It obliterates a middle class, as has socialism and communism.
***you just do not understand what you are saying. We have so many aspects of our society that have both Communist and Socialist ideals. But since you gave me this softball, I’ll take it. Do we not have two classes right now? The owners and the workers? That is exactly what Marx was critiquing regarding Capitalism. Marx knew nothing of a middle class because one did not exist in his eyes. It was the proletariat and bourgeois.

please have more than a second or third generation understanding of the terms you use.

Thank you for the correction of my definition. You further proved my point.****you took what I wrote, changed it to fit your uneducated ignorant opinion and concluded that I proved your point. Thanks, but you did all the heavy lifting.

Yes, my kids will be listening to Obama’s speech. They need to know that the president of our country takes education seriously, and he is not just signing laws (i.e. No Child Left Behind)that reduces their education to knowing how to fill in bubble sheets.

It really boggles my mind that President Obama has been met with so much opposition in his presidency–he hasn’t even completed a year yet. However, George W. Bush has had 8 years to show just how inexperienced, unintelligent, and uncaring he was. He rode on his father’s coat-tail and made about as much sense as a bag of chicken lips. He made himself look like a fool (and us) so many times that I’ve lost count.

Peadawg, if you can’t see that this racism, then you’re blinder than Stevie Wonder. George Bush could’ve said speeches everyday at 9:00 a.m, and nothing would’ve been said. In fact, Bush never touted education as a priority. He just signed a ridiculous law that will continue the deterioation of our children’s education.
