Honestly, some of you put way too much effort into a vacation. I guess we have travelled so much, it's second nature to me..we just throw stuff into a suitcase, grab a pillow, find someone to watch the animals, and go. If we forgot something, we buy it there. The only thing I HAVE to have is my camera, and it is always in my purse....and if I forget that, I have a camera on my phone.

catlady--I *think* that might have been a way of saying that the Lord has a plan for the baby, and time tells the plan or God will reveal His plan in His time.

Just my 2 cents

Back in the early 50s it was customary in the area where my parents lived for middle class white women to engage a black woman when the white woman had a baby. This lady did the housework and helped the new mama with childcare. Although I still don't know what it means, the woman who helped my mother (for about 3 years--must have been a slow recovery) told her, "All this baby needs is a little waiting on the Lord."

I have always packed pretty light--just what the individual, except when they are babies and toddlers, is willing and able to carry themselves. That is a good rule of thumb, kind of like the birthday party rule.

Thanks, FCM and DB. DB your sitter's mantra is great. My similar phrase for nervous new parents is: "It's a lot harder to screw up kids than you think -- they'll be fine."

I'm a believer in traveling light. We like to stay in condos when vacation with the kids (or without). It's easier to have breakfast, relax etc. I say only bring what you cannot get there. Don't pack groceries for the entire trip. Orlando has grocery stores and they aren't any more expensive than they are here. Save the room and shop when you get there. The same goes for OTC meds - they have them in Orlando if you need them. If the place has a washer, plan to run a couple of loads and take 1/2 the clothes. Beach towels are another matter - I think you need those - they are larger and they can be used in the car without a lot of extra room.

For somewhere like Orlando that's so casual you really don't need a lot - shorts, sneakers, t-shirts and swimsuits for the kids. Not much more for the adults.

That's my 2 cents worth.

HB: As a new mom, I was very grateful for our babysitter, who was very experienced. She was unflappable, and from her, I got my mantra: "They manage to grow up in spite of us." She had been around WAY more babies than I had, and it was wonderful to have a calm voice of experience around to ask questions and bounce ideas off of, since our parents were 500 and 1,000 miles away at the time.

I used to overpack. However, once we started taking road trips more frequently, you realize what you can do without. We always take our own beach towels, though. Now that we fly to LI, I bought beach chairs and towels and left them at my parents' house.

Several years ago, we went to Disney for a week, with a group of twenty or so...6 of my siblings, a few spouses and 8 kids. We stayed at a vacation club condo, between 4 units, all with a washers and dryers. My brother-in-law, who booked everything, traveled with only one overnight bag...seriously, an overnight bag, not a weekender bag. We all laughed at him, but the joke was on us. He packed two pair of swim trunks, three pairs of shorts, three t-shirts, three polo shirts, a pair of gym shorts to bum around in and a pair to sleep in, and extra socks. He wore his sneakers and the flip-flops fit in the outside pocket of his bag. We washed the bathing suits every night, so he had to do laundry only once that week. He joked that he had to rent a big van just to haul everyone's luggage to and from the airport.

JJ: My husband and I go to HHI every fall. A couple of years ago, we went for a romantic early morning walk and stumbled across a police investigation. No joking...the area was taped off, blue flashing lights and all. Two dead bodies had just been discovered by a woman walking her dog. What a way to start the day. Haven't been to PCB in years. Last trip that way was more towards Fort Walton, where it was not as developed. Curious to know what it is like these days. Have a good trip...enjoy!
