Top 10 Mother’s Day Gifts in a recession

Dads, time is almost up to think of a lovely gift for the hardworking mother of your children. It’s a little more difficult this year because many families can’t afford to pick up the phone and order an expensive bouquet of flowers or pop over to the jewelry store for a little bling. But don’t give up, there are plenty of inexpensive ideas that will make Mom very happy that aren’t a big pain to pull off.

Here are my Top 10 Mother’s Day Gifts in a recession. Many are free and all are easy to come by.

10.  Personalized video naming you “Mother of the Year!” -- A friend sent me this video the other day, and I love it! It’s a fictitious news report naming you “Mother of the Year.” A fake anchorwoman interviews people about you, and your name is filled in throughout the video . It is so cute and it really made me feel good. I think I’ll watch it when I’m having a hard day.

9. Flowers — I love flowers, but often florists gouge during major holidays. So head on over to the DeKalb Farmers Market and pick up fresh beautiful flowers at a fraction of the florists’ prices.

8. Kids cleaning the house — No explanation needed. All good, all the way around.

7. A walk with my family – They’ll never take a stroll with me. C’mon gang let’s all go for a walk together with no grumbles or complaints. Hold my hand, take a stroll and look at our lovely neighborhood.

6. Backyard BBQ – I love grilled hot dogs but hate firing up the grill. I want to sit in the back, watch my kids play and have my husband make me some yummy hot dogs. The kids will love this too!

5. Art work from my kids – We’ve all got crayons and markers at home. It’s fun to see year-to-year how their interpretation of you changes. For a while, they always drew me pregnant – even though I wasn’t!

4. Massage from your hubby! – I love, love massages, but they are so expensive. My husband is easily bored by giving massages so it would truly mean something for him to give me a lovely, LONG massage! (Hint, hint honey!)

3. Pedicure – It’s almost summer and my feet look terrible. Plus, in this bad economy I feel bad just stopping off and treating myself.

2.  A guilt-free nap!  – Free! And Dads, we will be nicer to you if we are well-rested! We might even fool around with you later that night!

1. Quiet time with our own mother – I just want to go to my mom’s house late Sunday afternoon and lay on the couch and watch Lifetime Original Movies with her.  Once again, this is free and something I never get to do without my children buzzing around breaking stuff!

I want to see your list too! To share the “Mom of the Year” video link or this story just hit the Share This button at the bottom of the page. You can email it to your friends or post it on your Facebook profile. It’s really easy. I tried it for the first time the other night, and even I could make it work.

Good ideas….I like 7, 8 and 9

. Please note that Costco and probably Sam’s club has beautiful flowers and they are so reasonable. I saw a gorgeous hydrangea, which could be planted in the yard and enjoyed nearly forever, at Costco last week ( around $20 I think). They also had flats of flowers that would be perfect around the mailbox ( Dad and kids could plant them together) for $10~

I also love BBQ but I am used to grilling myself and it is not a big deal. My husband just got a new grill for no reason….this is like replacing the microwave for us…we use it at least 4 times per week.

I really DO enjoy getting the neighbors over to visit with us. Ditto for visiting Costco and picking up potato salad, corn, cole slaw and some fresh fruit….voila a family meal for $25! Hot dogs are NOT BBQ ( this from those of us who lived in Texas….lol). Hot dogs are merely cooking out and good nonetheless. In Texas, BBQ must be BEEF but since I have lived here in Atlanta nearly 20 years, I will be thrilled with chicken or ribs!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful Moms who give us a glimpse into their lives by sharing anecdotes on this blog…hugs all!

Theresa, I hope you get your nap…I will!

OOOPS….I forgot this….while at Costco ( can you tell I love that place) get two AMC movie tickets for ( $15 ?) and give Mom the time to take her Mother or Best friend to a real Chick Flick. Throw in $10 for popcorn and cokes!

Hey MJG — Love the movie idea — I never get to the movies and it’s one of my favorite things!! Happy Mother’s Day to you too — I should have wrote that in my last paragraph — I may add that in!

No flowers, buy a plant or a tree to be planted. They last forever…..

I’m not going to participate in this discussion today. Mother’s day is just another day in my family. No biggie. Like I said before, my daughter tells me she loves me all the time. I tell my mom I love her all the time. I will send her a card with a gift card in it and will call her on Sunday. I usually call her on Sundays so it’s just another day to us.

We use to take my mom out until one year when we made reservations at a swanky restaurant up in the mountains, that we always went to on special occasions. When we arrived, there was a 3 hour wait (even with reservations). We didn’t stay, and ended up at McDonalds (which was just fine with us kids). My mom vowed right then and there that she NEVER wanted to go out for Mother’s Day again. And we haven’t!!!!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s, and to all the Dad’s who are doing it alone!!!! You deserve some recognition too!!!

Hope all the Mothers enjoy their day..My Mom is long gone, but she (like JJ’s Mom) was never big on all of the hoopla..We will take the grandchildren to church, go out to eat and that will be our day..Any day that I can spend with them is a great one for me..

Simply ask. My sister, an excellent cook and baker, wants me to replace some miscellaneous kitchen items that are worn and torn. I have the card and flowers, but she’ll probably get the greatest joy out of the new oven mitts, pot gloves and whisks she has ‘mentioned’ to me.

I am going over to my sister’s and make lunch for her and her daughter. I never became a mother, but my sister’s children and grandchildren are like my own. I thank her often for sharing them with me.

A nap or time to read a book is always a nice treat. I also enjoy time spent going on a walk with no fussing or whining from the kids :).

We always bought my grandmother rose bushes. They are inexpensive and she enjoyed them for many years in her back yard. I love the clean the house idea, but you really, really gotta clean it to make it worth it. I’m talking scrubbing baseboards. I’d love that.

MY Mom will get some ‘free’ weeders for her garden–they call her Grandma ;o) I will get her a couple of flats of flowers I would like her to plant because they look cool…she is also getting the gerber daisy plant I seem to be killing, but that is really just to be merciful to the plant…..she will complain they don’t go with what she bought….then in the summer she will claim they are just perfect.

The kids will snuggle me and watch movies if it rains. They will drag me out of bed toward the park if it is sunny. They will attempt to make me coffee, which will have me out of the bed in the kitchen next to them in seconds.

I WOULD LOVE ANYONE TO CLEAN THE HOUSE……but that is not likely to happen.

Happy Mother’s Day to you all!!!! Be sure to thank the child for making you a Mom….mine just giggle like crazy when I tell them that …. it is the best.

I completely forgot it was Mothers Day until today when my son came home with a little heart shaped box containing something they made in class (they even decorated the box in class).

So, I won’t even be sending my own mom a card this year! I’ll call, though.

However, I would like to just hang out with my family on Mother’s Day. Maybe go get a nice meal and have some mimosas.

Theresa….either NO ONE is interested in this topic….or EVERYONE is too busy getting their Mother’s Day gifts that they have no to time to chime in….I am curious and have no idea which it is!
In addition to Mother’s Day, I had 2 birthdays to buy gifts for this week and am happy that all cards and gifts are delivered! I also bought my sister a Mother’s Day gift from her dog, which is her baby and I think she will get a kick out of it…obviously, I am not the only one who buys dog cards as there are cute ones out there.
FYI…I loved the article by Lisa McLeod who has a column FORGET PERFECT….in the lifestyles section of the Gwinnett Post today about control freaks.

I like this list, it give me some ideas. And some of them are free. But for mom, I will never mind spend some money on the gift even in the recession. Mom’s love is priceless.
Share you a web for flower as well. , they are having discount before 2nd May. Even cheaper than normal.

A great MOTHER’S DAY GIFT!! only 99 cents!!

I wrote this song and sent it to my mom for Mother’s Day and she was overcome with emotion. Though I only intended to share the song with her, she has now encouraged me to share it through iTunes.

Please consider it for a gift to for anyone who cherishes a mom, knows a mom or is a mom, this Mother’s Day, May 9th!
