My friend Panama participated in a relationship panel that listed “substance over superficial” as part of a man’s wish list. I won’t come out and call shenanigans on this title completely, because women are known to be superficial creatures too. However, I want to know how many men can truly say they value substance more than superficial things?
I have seen a lot of men who get blinded by the beauty and completely overlook glaring red flags. When they learn the woman’s character is horrendous, do they take their lesson and choose better the next time? If so, what age do you think men become more enlightened?
When we tout all the things that are meaningful traits that would contribute to a lasting, long relationship, are we putting all that above the physical? Obviously we want the both of best worlds: personality and looks, but what is more important?
How many people have you asked out or dated strictly on their looks? If you had prior knowledge someone that you were attracted to is a raging jerk, would that turn you off enough to keep it moving?
Basically, what I want to know is..how superficial are you? If you were to rate your superficial number based on 1 to 10 scale, with 10 being SHALLOW HAL.

Superficial is not only measured by looks(physical). It is also measured by beliefs or wants(needs).
See;I won’t(don’t) cook.
Physicality just happens to be so there, glaring but…
But to be honest, every man appreciates a nice but and legs in a woman. If she has good wife(long term potential), the man hovers longer in order to explore further.
If she is shallow then the man goes for a shallower short term deal.
On the whole,u look for a happy balance.
Not too pretty(coz every man will want her and holla) and not too too serious(u don’t want a Margaret Thatcher All the damn time)

I kid and joke and cut-up sometmes (cause I always got a fan tailing me), but in all seriousness, for me substance wins hands down….EVERYTIME. I don’t need “Pretty Ricky”, eye-candy or some statuesque Adonis that ain’t worth his weight in gold. By the same token, I’ve always pretty much dated “handsome.” NEVER anything I aimed for or targeted. Matter of fact, I consider myself to be very average, still and even so, that’s just been the attraction. I have a “type”, but it’s nothing to do with looks but more so how a person acts, their drive and motivation towards getting a bang out of life. A person whose preferences and beliefs aligns with mine. IMO, it just makes better for meshing. I believe every individual should be their best person. From the inside out. I find absolutely nothing wrong with being attractive or being attracted to someone attractive. But the inside would have to match the outside.
Having said all of that, I don’t grant a pass to cute dudes if they violate. I’m not dealing with bullcrappery, disrespect, or being treated less than a lady…cause you’re cute. Nuh uh, not happening. I’ll happily take a pass and let someone else feel the honor of your cuteness….lol But that’s just how I’ve always been. I don’t see “looks” when it comes to that stuff.
Funny thing is while I’ve always dated someone whose beliefs and outlook on life pretty much aligns with mine, I always end up with someone whose is seemingly opposite of me when it comes to “personalities.” But it works…if that make sense. Quiet and mild manner, laid back and not one easily riled….and handsome
So, my point is you can do cute, handsome, not so cute, quiet, outspoken…whatever. As long as there’s substance (i.e. respect first and foremost, morals, etc)…I’m good with whomever.
Looks don’t EVER get a pass with me on behavior (esp towards women) that I deem not up to par or disrespectul or just plain lazy, or no drive. Substance goes a LOOOOONG way with me.

Rate your superficial number based on 1 to 10 scale, with 10 being SHALLOW HAL.
I would say I’ve always been a 6, looks does not make up for attitude. Not worried about other men hollering at her, just like don’t know what wife material is either. My thing is, is this someone I would one to spend the rest or my life with, will I enjoy her everyday no matter what is going on with us.
How many people have you asked out or dated strictly on their looks?
Don’t think I’ve ever asked them out, but it is the first thing that I noticed.

To catch a fisherman, women need to learn how to fish. Beauty is simply the bait. But to have the man swallow the bait, to reel him in you need a good hook, and that is your character.
If the man swallows the bait, but finds there is nothing there, he will fight the hook and escape. If he realizes that he has a good thing, he will remain hooked to you.
But you have to make it worthwhile.

My shallowness is an 8, I like a good looking guy I can’t lie. I love having good looking things and people around me. After I find out there’s nothing underneath all that handsomeness I bow out gracefully. The good thing about it all is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

There are plenty times women (as shallow as WE can be), will see a cutie and wonder what’s up with the women we might think is not so cute. Well, I for one don’t really do that…even though I want to be fair and say we. I get it. There’s something about her or him for that matter that they see, that maybe others can’t see. Substance, I’m guessing…lol I love it when women don’t “get it.” As it relates to a couple and what they see and how they mesh and what works for them, it matters not what other folks think.

Button – When Denzel was younger, I always felt that way and still do….somewhat. He’s aging now so as it happens to us all, beauty fades. But with Denzie….he’s got chrisma. Don’t get me wrong, in his younger days, I felt he was a looker but for me it was the chrisma and that swagger (don’t shoot me) that ALWAYS oooozed through to make him be that “it” man, so many of us gush over. Plus I admire the fact that his wife is average. Not bad looking at all, but just a simply seemingly nice woman. I like that he didn’t go all out for arm candy

Substance always wins. For me, superficiality doesn’t necessarily rests with someone’s look. More importantly, your character is front and center and that dictates how I respond to you and how I “see” you going forward. Depending on the events, it may be our last encounter. Looks are nice, but it’s not the #1 feature I look for.
Morning.

When I think of substance vs superficial, I’m reminded of this chick I dated years ago. She wasn’t the cutest girl in the world, but I really enjoyed her company. I would fall by her spot with the intentions of beating it; we would be in her bed with all our requirements in close proximity (ice, vodka, etc.), throw in a flick and then proceed to talk for hours. We would discuss our jobs, our relationship with the creator, current events, our political views or any other topic that came to mind. We would often over talk one another and then apologize for interrupting because we were both so eager to interject our opinions. Before you know it hours had passed, the porn done went off, a half a bottle of vodka has disappeared and we still had yet to get it in. We would laugh and finally concentrate on the matter at hand. In retrospect, I rarely took that girl on real dates because I didn’t think she was pretty enough to be on my arm. I guess I’m the one that lacked substance.

I also rate superficiality on more than just looks. It is ones general attitude. This person always has to have the latest whatever name-brand, and are too busy trying to see & be seen and keep up with the Jones. They look down their nose at others, yet have nothing to offer the world themselves.
Of course, if a dude doesn’t treat me right, is stupid and irresponsible, shows no concern for his fellow man, lazy, etc, it does not matter how good looking he is. That’s a no-brainer.
People, male and female, may hook up with someone temporarily that only has the superficial going for them, but to actually get into something long term would just be stupid. Folks are known to do that though.
I have always been attracted to how a man carries himself. That’s what I find attractive about men like Denzel, Idris, Barack – their smooth swagger. Yes, there are men that may be more attractive physically, but if they don’t have that swag, that confidence, that intelligence, that smoothness, well, they just gotta have that to turn my head. Some pretty boy with a stank attitude that can’t even change a lightbulb, he can go somewhere.

In the fifteen years I’ve known them; I have never seen them with a female that weighed less than 225 lbs. Most times they are with some real buga bears. I ask them once about their choices in women. It was my intention to commend them for bypassing the superficial and obviously dating these women for their inner beauty. Then they proceeded to tell me the “man f*%K inner bueaty”. the reason they date this type is because they have a place to live, they could cook, you never have to take them anywhere, and you don’t have to give them money to get their hair and nails done, because they do that. I laughed and said yall cats crazy. Here I am thinking yall men of substance, but yall really men of convenience. Them my brothers, gotta luv em.

Courtside…you probably right, I say add a point to whatever score somebody gives…lol.
I’m no Shallow Hal, but I wasn’t checkin for substance until I hit 25. Even then, that substance needed to come wit some nice T&A. There is a certain weight class I won’t consider, and beauty is important, I too have had a few that were “nightfighters”, “midnight specials”, whatever you want to call them…only saw them for a good time and they didn’t have a chance at a midday lunch.
As I matured, my thought of what I liked and my opinion on what and is sexy and beautiful broadened tremendously!

I would say that I rate a 6 on the superficial scale. I definitely will take substance over looks. I’ve dated men in the past that may not have been the best looking men, but had a lot of great qualities (well…at the time). The Young One is a cutie, but doesn’t have enough substance for me.

@Disco – “I always heard little, skinny chicks were “deeper”. fellas, any truth in that?”
Well, it depends on how many kids she had. Some women regardless of size after children need to get it “tighten-up”. Skinny chicks cause other problems such as “blue balls”. I need a healthly woman with meat on her bones to go as deep as I like to go.

Afternoon all,
Long time no blog.
Topic- I would prolly rate myself a 8 on whether I’m superficial. Honestly I like pretty women and I somehow am attracted to that. It probably moreso is the challenge in my mind as I am only a regular average dude, some days extra regular. On the flip side I am full of substance and require the same. After a few good convo’s a knockout chick would get weighed and measured whether its a conquest or really get to know them.
My wife is a real pretty chick and I/we occasionally get the “how did he get her” question. My ego usually answers with “I happen to be a helluva ninja that’s how” hahaha

disco
December 4th, 2012
3:17 pm
bluz – I am going for it. I’ve been “tobacco” (translation brown) for a couple of years. I’m thinking of a black with a cherry rinse.
kimmie – my hair is thriving right now. I don’t wear it “out” much but when stretched it comes past my chin/shoulders. I wear it flat twisted and pinned up so much that folks think I’m weaved or wigged when it’s out.

3:22 pm
disco – I think you missed the mark on this one. That’s what we or I was saying. It’s not “marrying up” per se. For a couple to appear to be seemingly mixmatch is usually folks (not say you…per se), that are hung up on looks. But if they work well together and thrive and vibe, it’s a perfect match.
I think the person named “courtide” or something like that missed it too. I mean who says eight or nothing….unless you’re like 20 something. And the age has nothing to do with settling or taking less, it has to do with growing and coming into what matters. I think Jake said once he got older, attaction was much bigger than he initially thought….at least that’s what I thought he was saying.
Bluzgirl
December 4th, 2012
3:22 pm
disco – I don’t know what you look like, but I like the idea of the black with a cherry rinse. Lately, I’ve been trying to get close to my natural color of medium brown. I used to do reds a lot, but it starts to look brassy after a while. Earlier this year (after the break up), I colored my hair black and it is finally almost out of my hair! I cut off about 6 inches a couple of weeks ago, so that got most of it.
Bluzgirl

Going back to the “settling as you get older,” I feel as though my standards are getting a little higher as I get older. I’ve settled too much and have learned what I do NOT want in a relationship. No way will I settle…
Celisea
December 4th, 2012
3:24 pm
Don’t get me wrong, eight is great!! But to say eight or nothing is mighty big. You better be a 10 or better if all or nothing. I think us regular folks like eights, will take an eight, could be an eight, but in reality we nothing sometimes that eight end up being a zero and you cut your chances hugely by doing the eight or nothing.
Now, I’m an all or nothing gal, but that’s got nothing to do with the looks-o-meter.

Yeah Celisea, it was something like that…as I have matured, my perspective on beauty has changed in many ways. I like’em a little thicker than I used too, natural or permed is fine, light or dark, busty or just a mouthful, stalks or big thighs, just depends on her presentation..and speaking of presentation.
I like a woman who maintains her grey well, its sexy too, all that coloring, but I understand that most women seldom find the same comfort in aging that men do. Its winter, got my grey’s on full display.

I was babysitting my two great nephews last night…I’m just sooo fond of them.
They’re getting a babysister soon.
There’s also a couple at my church that’s just had a new baby and wouldn’t know, lil ole me makes a beeline everychance I get to talk and play with her. She’s soooooo adorable and so little and sooo cute. She’s got deep dimples too! Her mom was busy after church Sunday so I changed her Pamper. How bout I was struggling and put in on backwards…lol It’s been many many moons since I changed a Pamper. Hope she didn’t end up wetting her blankets in the babyseat all cause I did it wrong. lololol

I volunteered the other week and there was nonblack chick there, 75 percent gray and an absolutely beautiful young looking face. A dude outright asked her how old she was and she said it proudly 45. She talked about her hair that both she and her sister were nearly gray, that she wasn’t dying and like it better with length. Said she tried it short and that didn’t bode well. She was a really nice looking girl. Small framed too.

Jake – I feel like I’m too young to have grays!
My grandmother was totally white haired by the time she was about 38. That scares me. I’ve actually been coloring my hair since I was about 14 years old. When I was younger, it wasn’t too many natural colors. For the past 10 years or so, I’ve stuck to normal colors mainly for my job!

Celisea – I went to kindergarten/1st grade with a girl that gray prematurely. I ran into her near our senior year in high school and she was salt & pepper. I saw her again around age 30 and her hair was almost snow white. She has absolutely beautiful hair whatever color it is though, looks satiny/silky. And her skin is a pretty olive brown. She’s a stunner.

All the folks in my family on my mom’s side grayed early. My mom and all her sisters are fully gray with the exception of one who chooses to dye her hair. I actually have a lot of grays now and i have no issue with them as far as trying to dye my hair. My mom always gets compliments on her hair.
Leggs – You ain’t neva lied when it comes to the grays having a mind of their own. When I was getting my hair done at the salon, the beautician would always have trouble with a few unruly ones doing their own thing. They also are thicker and grow much faster than my other hair.

btw – I don’t necessarily dye my hair to cover gray. I initially dyed for the first time about 3 years ago to jazz up the natural hair. sometimes when my styles are very plain or boring the color is the extra kick I need. even just the plain puff seems a little sassier with a touch of color.

Ex-No sir, I don’t have a son, but I played a lil ball in my day. If he really likes BBall I would say go ahead and get it. If he is so-so on the game I would wait. Here’s why, the basics of the game of basketball takes coordination of your motor skills at a higher level than most sports. Most kids will not really be able to “play” until about 10. If you do decide to get him a goal, put it at the regulation height of 10 feet, you want his form to develop shooting at regulation, that way as he gets older, his shot will be “pure”.
