Dating: Will ONLY cook for love

The joys of having male friends knows no bounds. They say the most enlightening things to get me really thinking. For instance, my friends tell me it is easier to get sex from a “modern woman” than a home-cooked meal. Not that they are complaining, mind you.

Apparently, the women they meet consider cooking the last frontier in a new relationship. These women will ONLY cook for love. There really is something to be said about a woman taking the time to cook a man a home cooked meal. Cooking for and feeding a man is a very intimate thing, but so is sex.

I am curious to know if men remember the women who cooked a great meal for them more than the woman who rocked his world in the bedroom. What would you think if a woman offered to cook you dinner for a first or second date? Have you ever cooked a meal for a woman you just started dating?

Ladies, when do you decide to cook a meal for a guy? Is it usually after the two of you have become physical? When was the last time you made a romantic dinner for someone?

P.S. We are all adults, right? So let’s have a judgement free discussion!

Cooking dinner on the first or second date wouldn’t be that bad for me, because for the few that have cooked dinner for me, it was done during the friend stage of our relationships. Didn’t know they had rules for that.

lol. good morning y’all. I’m that chick that puts cooking way on the back burner (no pun intended). a guy has to graduate to the place where I’m willing to cook for him. part of it is because some guys come off like they expect it (I’ve had guys I’ve only just met ask what I was cooking. to me that’s just a lame attempt to get an invite). another part is because I protect my home and it’s often quite a bit of time before someone is invited to my home. I could go on and on about my reasons for delaying the cook move but that one won’t happen off the gate with me.

hey bluz. I hope the topic doesn’t last very long but the reality is that it has potential. eating is life and cooking is part of that. with the folks that love to cook, the folks that hate to cook, the folks that try but can’t I’m sure that folks have stories for day re relationships and cooking. I’m sure a lot of women were told that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and I’m sure a lot of women took that to heart and went to cooking and baking trying to make magic happen.

S/H – it’s been done both ways. I might mention I was getting ready to fix dinner and dude would ask what I was cooking. It could be he brought it up first. to me the “what are you cooking” line is just about the same as the “what are you doing line”. cooking leads to “so, you going to invite me to dinner”. what are you doing leads to “you want some company”. brothers will look for any opening they can get.

I love cooking so, I consider myself a home grown chef. I’m a turtle when it comes to getting physical with a guy so he’s sure to taste my food before the phyical. The last romantic meal I cooked was last Wednesday night. I prepared baked ginger blue fish with a side of quinoa topped with fresh italian parsley and sauteed veggie sprinkled with balsamic vinegar.

I think the older a man gets the more he appreciates a woman that embraces and takes pride in her traditional maternal role. Nowadays, it is easy to find a beautiful chick, with bread, that’s great in bed. It’s far more challenging to find a woman that can cook and maintain a clean and organized household. Most men I know are longer attracted to the female that smells like Vera Wang or Flower Bomb perfume. We want the chick that smells like Pinesol and Bleach with a hint of chicken grease.

A woman who can’t or won’t cook, shame on her…I will just speak for me on this one, but I know there are lots of cats who think like this…A woman’s ability and willingness to cook speaks directly to her ability sustain a relationship. How is that you might ask? Here’s how, If I am going to date you, and consider seriously staying with you, you must be willing to happily prepare some nourishment for me. Of course, initially we will dinner date, go here, go there, but if we are going to grow as couple, there is no way that everytime we eat, we eat out. Get in there and whip something up. Women want stability in a man, and men want the same out of a woman. You don’t want a man with no job, we don’t want woman who can’t cook or looks at cooking as a chore.

It’s a shame that most women don’t place more importance on their home making skills. I’m probably dating myself, but I remember when Home Economics was an elective in high school. All the fella’s wanted to get in “Home Ec” because it was a classroom full of girls. That’s where I learned how to scramble eggs and bake a cake. A woman can’t learn to be a good homemaker at twenty five. It has to be instilled in her as a young girl by watching the elder women of the tribe. Unfortunately, societal shifts (i.e. Grandma 36, Momma 20, and Daughter 4) have made old school mom’s who felt an innate obligation to prepare meals for the family a thing of the past.

Ex Ponzi scheme, how you figure, these people, get a chance for a FREE education, everything included, and the school makes money too. The school invest in them and expect a return. same here…the smart ones get the education, they dont do as muc with the football or they graduate, play a few years then roll out…Most dont graduate for luv of money…they end up losing both..the money and the education.

The schools rake in millions…it doont even compare with the crumbs they pay in scholarships…..

Don’t blame the schools for young men who don’t take the opportunity for a free college education seriously. They also have a networking opportunity afforded to them that most don’t. They may not all make it to the NFL, but they will have jobs waiting on them due to there affiliation with there collegiate team. See, former Duke basketball player Reggie Love landing a job as an aid to President Obama. I’m sure he is an intelligent cat, but I’m also sure playing ball at Duke didn’t hurt his chances.

Inviting a man to a home cooked meal is also one of the more benign ways fro a woman to ask a man out and to show she is interested, without a commitment.

Bluz-I didn’t say that either, but its plenty of people who kill themselves who haven’t suffered in silence not one day. Check the suicides behind financial crisis situations, specifically, the murder-suicide is not typically someone with diagnosable illness…its the enraged act followed by a realization that prison is next, then a choice to end it all. My career is in mental health, and what you stated just isn’t true. Do not add to the stigma faced by people with illnesses by throwing around such statements.

I have a bit of a disconnect about the cooking thing. Everyone can cook, just like everyone can do housework, make the bed, clean the toilet, mow the lawn, whatever. If you refuse, it’s due to what? Laziness? Or what? Like I said, a bit of a disconnect for me.

So, to me, if a chick can’t cook, it’s because she’s lazy. How do you feed yourself, eat out ALL THE TIME? Instead of laundry, do you throw away dirty clothes and just buy new ones? Erwhat?

bluz – I agree with jake. I think a lot of folks like to say that people who commit suicide or commit other atrocious acts are crazy because we don’t understand. it’s easier to call them crazy than accept other possibilities. just my take though.

abc – then we should be more specific. maybe we should say cook food that folks actually want to eat and enjoy eating. sure there are lots of folks who “can’t” cook who do cook regularly but it’s not the most appetizing. Unfortunately for me, I have spoiled wifey. I cook a big breakfast every Saturday and typically serve it to her in bed. I truly enjoy cooking and prepare at least 65 % of the meals in our home. I was a latch key kid, so I had to cook for myself since I was 11. I take pride in my mac and cheese, greens, roast, brown stew chicken, smothered pork chops, and blackened tilapia. The average black woman gets her hair done every two weeks….some weekly. We don’t get the greasies and oil build up. As far as doing hair at home, I have a standing appointment every two weeks. I tend to wash my hair in between, mainly because I want it to look fresh. So, no I don’t wash mine, but but I have scheduled appointments at the hair salon. On topic(if we’re still on it) Dushawn said below:

It’s a shame that most women don’t place more importance on their home making skills.

Well the men on the blog seem to appreciate this quality in a woman. It really is something that depends on how you were raised – whether or not a man appreciates it because he saw it in his mother/grandmother and if a woman was brought up being taught such things. Or like Leggs, self-taught. I’m old-school in that I had an excellent role model for such in my mother and the other women in the family. Some of the cooking skills I picked up from mom, some on my own. It’s just something I take pride in.

My experience with men on this subject? I found it was damned if I did, damed if I didn’t. I’m a foodie, so a guy was going to get something home-cooked from me rather early on, even if it was just some homebaked cookies or cake. I never did it up front, waited until I was comfortable having him in my home. But I can’t say it won any of them’s heart. It was like they enjoyed the benefit of the cooking, but that didn’t mean they were going to put a ring on it. I had one or two to put women down that couldn’t cook, but that didn’t seem to matter to them. I see dudes every day with chicks that can’t boil water or pick up a broom to sweep. They complain, but hey, they knew that when they married them. If that was so important, then that’s what they would have looked for in a wife!

So that not in the lab or fallen behind on research ain’t the answer. My old stylist that passed away a couple of years ago was on the Bronner Brothers Team and if our perms didn’t do right, he’d call have them to adjust the formula. They would do it too. Is it possible black folks arent very up to date on the washing thing coz we dont have research labs – Huh? We don’t need research labs to tell us when we need to wash our hair. We know when our hair is dirty, what environment it has been subjected to that week, how much exericse one has done, a host of things that tell us we need to wash our hair. Leggs, bluz, maybe I haven’t got there yet, but there isn’t a fight or argument that I’ve got into that has made me think about going to get my gun, half the time I forget I even have it. I haven’t been to the range in over 16 years, and I’m pretty good shot. If you’re the kind of person that will snap, the gun just happen to be your weapon of choice, people do it with knives and any other weapon that they can get their hands on.

Ex, everyone in our shop wear gloves when we have to handle the tough jobs. it’s usually the jack legs that don’t.

@DuShawn – “Guns”

Too many cowards are walking around with guns. For example in the state of GA over 250,000 people (grandpa/ma, etc.) applied for and recieved permits to carry concealed weapons in public places. Laws such as “Stand Your Ground” are making it easier for people to use “fear” as an excuse for taking matters into their own hands. Guns do not kill people. People kill people.

The young mother on GMA some months ago or maybe a year or so ago that told her story, killed one of her intruders…the other coward ran.

She had just had a baby, husband had just died of cancer and she’s living out in the middle of nowhere. Two dudes apparently had been watching decided to come in on her. She had two guns. She dialed 911 and asked if she could shoot. The operator said I can’t tell you what to do but if they step in your house, you have the right to protect yourself. I was soooo happy happy happy for her in pulling the trigger. They found a long blade. No telling what they would have done to her and baby.

The cases I referenced weren’t carried out by criminals. It was teenage kids & mental patients. This is not a hypothetical argument. We have actual real-life facts to examine. The US has, by far, the easiest access to guns of any country in the western world. We also have, by far, the highest rate of gun-related deaths in the western world. This is not a coincidence. More guns == more gun violence. Period. Sure, there are other ways to kill people, but short of bombs, none as easy and efficient. Should bombs be legal? Should building your own chemical or biological weapons at home be legal? Again, no law will ever completely stop its intended target, but they do make a difference. All you have to do is look at the statistics.

“Guns Don’t Kill People. People Kill People”

Do not ever play with guns. Only retrieve your gun when you perceive a real threat to your life, children or personal property. I can only speak for myself. When I was younger I owned a nice sportscar (1977 corvette). Early one morning I heard my engine start and looked out my bedroom window to see a guy stealing my car. My first reaction was to retrieve my Glock 9mm pistol and shoot this guy. I raised my window and was about to pull the trigger when my girl friend stepped in front of me and said “do you want to kill that guy for stealing your car, it’s not that important, it is only a car.” I stopped and called the police. Shooting someone is not easy. Are you prepared for the mental and emotional consequences of your actions? Ask yourself if killing someone will make your life better. No it won’t.

Me and my potnahs have always been of the mindset, I’d rather get caught with fiya than without it. We were all felons. Our typical M.O. was to date a green chick, tell her this is a rough city and she needs protection. Offer to buy her a firearm and send her in the store to buy three or four. I never left home unarmed. Carrying a weapon makes one less likely to apologize and your tolerance for bullsh&*^t decreases tremendously. I once had an enlightening conversation with my now deceased father-in-law. This man spent half his life in prison and was notorious for his temper and gunplay. Ironically, he encouraged me to stop carrying a weapon. He said…. “son leave the Guns at home. If you get in an argument and loose you temper it’s easy to pull heat and kill a man over foolishness. But if you have to go back home and get your piece, that gives you time to think about your actions. Now, if you get home, grab you gun, drive all the way back and you still want to shoot him. He probably deserves it…” Of course you have to consider the source of this penitentiary logic, but I never forgot conversation.

Like everyone, I’m a product of the environment in which I was raised. I’m happy that I’ve been able to maintain myself such that I have no need of putting on an act around anyone, work or play, corporate or in a concert, ball game or church.

To me, I am what I say I am, not what someone else thinks I am. I for real with everyone, all the time, no matter what. Unless they’re a cop, in which case I’m silent and doing my best to avoid them. Got no use for cops.

Now, should someone be found at some kind of fault due to the environment in which they were raised, to the extent they feel they have to put on an act? I rather doubt that many are fooled by the act. In fact, I think that by and large, people’s perceptions that they have to put on an act are mistaken. I think putting on an act is a mistake. You’ll slip up sooner or later, and those (you think you have) fooled will scratch their head and say “what what?”. Your stock will plummet. Better to not enact a lie.

abc..when you’re in this game you have to act like the players. That doesn’t mean sacrificing your integrity, pride or enthicity. It means modifying your normal behavior to adapted and prosper in a different setting.

We’re quite ethnically diverse around here — really so, not just a black-white mix. I don’t think anyone pretends to be anything or anyone they’re not. Me personally, I don’t share much that’s personal at work anyway, but it’s nothing to do with my background. I just don’t care to bring personal stuff into work, and vice-versa.

What’s your business, ergo game?

Yeah, we did the bowling thing a while ago. I never bowl, but it was fun — rolled a 162 and 170. Some of the chicks couldn’t bowl at all, but it was fun to watch them throw it.

So, a couple options: wear a long sleeve tee under the bowling shirt, forget about what people think of your arms, or be ill that night.

Like everyone, I’m a product of the environment in which I was raised. I’m happy that I’ve been able to maintain myself such that I have no need of putting on an act around anyone, work or play, corporate or in a concert, ball game or church….

If I may add and the blog

And also…..To me, I am what I say I am, not what someone else thinks I am. I for real with everyone, all the time, no matter what.

cosign, cosign, cosign. I don’t exactly see eye to eye with abc the majority of the time, but I’m agreeing. And I know this is not my conversation, but no matter how “tight” your game is, if you gotta lie to win or get in or get over, false pretense, faker poser you may be, but NEVA a real playa nor a winner!!!

Night folks.

I don’t think it’s a matter of not being yourself. it’s a matter of having more than one self. the way I speak/act at home definitely wouldn’t fly at work. the way I speak at work, likely wouldn’t fly at home. the way one acts on a Saturday night out may not be how they act at Sunday morning service. just different versions of one’s self.
