I have a friend, Victor, who is wondering if he should be concerned about his girlfriend’s money habits. She never pays for anything – doesn’t even offer to. She buys extravagant things, spends a lot of money eating out, and he doubts she even knows what a savings account is.
They have not been an exclusive couple for long, so he has only been observing her spending habits in the last few weeks. He has not questioned her about it yet, but fiscal responsibility is really important to him. He grew up poor and has always been very smart about saving money, living within or below his means. I think he should immediately go and talk about this with her. If it bothers him that much, it is best to go ahead and have the conversation to see how she views money.
Do you think that a person’s money habits should be looked at when you are dating?
Have you ever dated someone whose poor money habits were a red flag for you?
If someone has a different idea about money and financial responsibility, do you think it could be a deal breaker for you?

“a lot of what I pay in I don’t benefit from (like school tax)”
Everyone benefit from an educated country, regardless of whether you have kids in public schools. The more highly educated the work force, the more appealing we are as locations for companies — i.e. job creators. Highly educated people make more money, spend more money, create jobs, pay more taxes, etc. And who do you think is going to be paying to support things like medicare and social security when you & I are old enough to retire?

social security?!? I believe that you are younger than me, but even my generation won’t get social security despite the fact that I have paid into it regularly. Medicare? Don’t give a isht. Those programs were intended to supplement retirement not BE your retirement. So, people like me (and I would assume you based on your financial awareness) have made other plans to make up the supplement we would have gotten.

As far as education~ Here’s a newsflash: the students in GA are not getting highly educated. In fact, we are or were in the race for last place. (Haven’t check the statistics recently, but we were in 49th place.) Glad to see that all that money I’m paying in is producing such a high quality of education…

“Those programs were intended to supplement retirement not BE your retirement”
Of course, but that supplement definitely helps. But on Medicare, you really should give a sh!t, because if all you had to rely on for health insurance was private for-profit insurance when you’re old & need a lot of medical services, you’d be up sh!t creek. Because you’d either not be able to get coverage or the premiums would be prohibitively high.

“Glad to see that all that money I’m paying in is producing such a high quality of education…”
Comon — But that also has a lot to do with the way that education is funded — via property taxes. If you look at the public schools in my area (and I’m sure yours as well), they actually rate quite well.

BTW — I hope you know that I enjoy our little debates.
It’s too bad actual candidates can’t debate issues without getting sidetracked by stupid, inconsequential red herrings. (Of course, it makes it more fun to debate you when I’m picturing your Albertina getting all fired up).

Comon — You like Clinton? I’m confused then. So, what is it you don’t like about Obama? He’s pushing essentially the same policies, except that Obama’s health care plan was actually Bob Dole’s conservative alternative to Clinton’s single-payer system.

Bill Clinton was WAAYYY more center of the aisle than Obama is. Foreign Policy, keeping the debt down, etc. Yeah, I like Clinton. We could bring him back for another term as far as I’m concerned. As a conservative economically and a liberal socially, he met both of my needs. Not to mention, he was fun!

Well, I will agree with you that Clinton was more centrist on defense — but probably not for the reason that you would say that. Clinton actually reduced defense spending (a trend that actually started in Regan’s 2nd term). But Obama at least says he doesn’t want to increase defense spending.
And as far as keeping the debt down, that’s easier to do without the Bush tax cuts, which Obama would like to let expire. It’s also easier to do when the economy is doing well, which it was under Clinton (despite the higher tax rates on “job creators”).
Now, I will grant you, Billy boy knew how to party. (But your GOP’ers hated him for that, too!)

Not I! I loved the party Billy. Honestly, I thought they were on a wild goose chase with the impeachment proceedings. If Hilary was cool, then I’m cool too. The only part I had a problem with was him flying her to camp David on our tax dollars. Otherwise? Live and let live.
Is the bar open yet?!? I need a drink today!

But seriously, this narrative that Obama is a left wing radical is just demonstrably false. Look at his policies. They’re all moderate GOP policies from the late 80’s / early 90s: Obamacare (Bob Dole’s plan), cap & trade (GOP plan), his defense budgets & policies on drone strikes are way more in line with GOP hawks than olive-branch liberals, etc. Just because Fox News says it doesn’t make it so (actually, more likely the opposite).

I think I’ve told you before, I don’t watch Fox News. The 2.4 Trillion dollar Chinese debt tacked on to our already floundering economy, the wanting to make the jews & arabs friends, the kowtowing to other political (foreign) leaders just doesn’t sit well with me. I am of the mind that if they are going to hate us, let them do it for free. As far as the 2.4 trillion? Don’t even get me started…

Ex~ I will tell you the same thing I tell everyone else. I am glad that I live in a country where a black man can now make it to the highest office in the United States, that doesn’t mean that I have to agree with everything that comes out of the man’s mouth. If you’re wrong, you’re just wrong. I could give a damn if he was orange with purple spots!
And, realistically, the statement you made just then is why a lot of people in the GOP feel that he only got elected because he was black. The GOP is a azz-backwards party (I will own that) but when you say things like that it leads one to believe that you didn’t give a damn about the politics and you ONLY voted for him because he was black. (And hopefully that’s not true)

Every president since WW2 has been trying to get the Israelis and Palestinians to come to some kind of peace agreement. Every president in my lifetime has increased the debt — Republican & Democrat alike, even Clinton (he had deficits every year except his last in office, and the overall debt increased on his watch, too). And as for kowtowing… well, I’ll have to plead ignorance on that, because I have no idea what you’re talking about? You mean when he kowtowed to Pakistan by going into their country to take out Bin Laden without telling them?

Ex the funny thing about being apart of that history is that you’re are a part of it whether you voted for him or against him. But the folks that made real history didn’t do what they did to be a part of history, they were just standing up for what they believed in.
