Imagine how awkward a date can be when you realize you have polar opposite views on politics. It happens a lot more than you would think. A reader emailed about being hugely disappointed that her new beau has staunch conservative views. She is concerned that it is something that can’t really be reconciled in a relationship. She wonders if she should even try.
Do you think that in order for a relationship to have a shot at lasting, you have to have the exact same outlook on politics?
Have you ever dated someone who had vastly different political opinions than your own? How did you make it work?
Election night was probably the best night to meet someone with shared political views or interests. Did you meet anyone fascinating while you were waiting on election results?
How important is it to have aligned political beliefs? Would you consider it a deal breaker?

Democrat? Republican? Doesn’t matter. But a communist Muslim who thinks that I owe a large portion of my hard earned wealth to others who made no effort nor took any of the risk is a deal breaker and any idiot who voted for Osama Hussein Obama needs an intellectual adjustment.

Would you consider it a deal breaker? Again, no. I wouldn’t let our political difference be a deal breaker unless he’s just outright blantant and constantly in my face about his political views. I would curb that to an outright ad nuseam. It’s all about respecting each others view/opionion/beliefs and political choice.

My hope for those such as our first poster and those like him that find themselves angry over the outcome of the election is that they find comfort in the Christianity that they cling so closely to and consistently tout as the basis for many of their policies, beliefs and actions.
For if they truly believe and are practicing Christianity, they should be able to admit that a God who is considered all-knowing and all-powerful and who does things in divine order does not make mistakes.
And if they remember that all things work together for the good of those who love Him, why are they worried? Why are they mad?
If the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is your God, then you have nothing to worry about regardless of who sits in the White House.

Do you think that in order for a relationship to have a shot at lasting, you have to have the exact same outlook on politics? – Not at all. Like it’s been said, respect is the more important foundation to have. We can have differing views on many things, but love and respect for each other trumps everything else.

Do you have to have the same ideas on politics? Nope. The hubs and I cancel each other out regularly. And so goes the world. In reality, our views are actually amazingly close, we just differ on who we think will best accomplish them. That being said, we debate with respect and move on.

Bert called telling him the show would pay for a one way ticket for him, even told him about good start up business for that area. While I’m disappointed that Romney didn’t win, I don’t think that the Presidency has that much power and control over what actually happens, so no need to whine and cry. Congress’s mix stays about the same; we’ll see what happens with appointments to the Supreme Court this term. I’d say Reagan was the first President that made it clear to me that the Presidency had become a figurehead, more of a symbol, than anything that had real political meaning. Perhaps Nixon was the last President that had any real political clout.
So, kind of a wash, in my view. Those that Romney appealed to won’t get hurt; those that find Obama appealing won’t really get helped.

Morning Blog Peeps!!
I don’t think vastly differing political views would be a dealbreaker so much as they would be a non-starter for me, just like vastly different religious beliefs. I can respect that everyone is different and has a right to their beliefs and opinions. But I don’t have to be in a relationship or marry someone that differs so drastically with me. I’m not converting or raising kids or changing my lifestyle to suit another person that doesn’t share my basic beliefs and opinions. Period, point blank. I don’t even let it get started. Thus my personal life runs much easier. My hubs and I can have a lively, friendly debate on things, but basic beliefs and political stances we share and agree on.

What is the GOP strategy to clean-up the homegrown terrorist group(s) known as the “tea party” ?The American People (elderly, women, minorities, gays & lesbians, Muslims & Jews, etc.) have spoken. During the 2010 midterm elections the whole world saw the hatred and bigotry displayed by the “tea party” and heard their call to battle (take back my country) as well as saw the majority of poor uneducated, disenfranshised White Americans embrace the “tea party” (klansmen, skinheads, militia’s, birther’s, etc.) as a protest vote against the American People for electing the first Black American President of the USA. During the 2010 midterm elections the GOP/tea party won several seats in the House of Representitives and held the majority of votes in the House. The American People were held hostage. Every piece of legislation presented by President Obama and the Excutive Branch were either “fillbusterd” in the House or never brought to the floor of the House to vote.
I hope the GOP uses this opportunity to recruit moderate candidates and create a strategy to include all the American People with the goal of re-capturing the White House in 2016.

kimmie~ While I see your point, I view this discussion the same way that I view religion. To wit, if my son is going to be a Christian, I want him to be a Christian because he has full knowledge of our understanding of God and he chooses to be a Christian. To that end, I have taken him to synagogues, he has gone to temple with some friend who are Jehovah’s Wittness, I read the Bhagavad-gita with him, he has been to a Buddhist ceremony, etc, etc. Therefore, being in a relationship with someone whose views differ from mine is a non-issue (unless as someone said earlier, they were constantly cramming it down my throat)

Comon – That’s wonderful what you are doing with your son. I try to do similiar with my kids with respect to colleges and careers – take them to different college campuses, take them to work with me & others I know, expose them.
My point is the person with drastically different views such as religion doesn’t even have to constantly cram it down my throat for me to not want to deal with it. Just the practice of it and the differences in the lifestyle and the beliefs are something I don’t want to deal with. I BREIFLY dated a guy that turned out to be atheist. I could not deal with every time I said something like “Oh God” he would say “Don’t go bringing God into this”. My faith is a big part of who I am. One of my friends married a Muslim and she is a Methodist. Her hubs does not like it when we drink alcohol. I’m not changing my lifestyle to accomodate someone. When I’m out or in another person’s home I respect their differences. I don’t have to deal with it in mine.

One of my best friends from high school is a Jehovah’s Witness. When my family would have birthday or Christmas or any holiday celebrations, she could not come.
One of my good friends that is a very devout Baptist started falling for a Muslim and she was extremely torn because he stated if they married he wanted her to convert and she did not want to.
I could not see myself converting and not ever celebrating Christian holidays. So while I can work with or be friends all day long with different people, I draw the line at marrying into such.

So, you know we walked over and waited in linbe for like, you know, 3 hours…” (You get the picture). Well, every time I would say “you know” she would interrupt me and say “No I don’t know. Anyway…on topic – it is possible to be in a relationship with someone with different political views as long as you both keep yourselves in check. hey bluz – as bad as all that hatred is it’s just an unpleasant little reminder of the truth. folks love to talk diversity but not all folks live it. folks love to say how America has come a long way and that may be true but there’s still a long way to go. just have to study the hatred and learn from it. just my take though.

disco – I am one who has opted to not share my political beliefs online. It’s really no ones business who I voted for. I won’t be whining nor gloating. It’s hard to see some of the things people are saying and continue to bite my tongue. It’s just sad how some people are reacting. I feel a certain way today and I choose to keep it to myself. It’s just a sad world. And my mama wonders why I choose to not have children…

Some folks are just going to beyotch and moan regardless. 2 weeks ago my company reclassified almost every job in my department. Almost everyone is in a higher pay range now, a higher bonus percentage, and a fancier job title! When I went around to give everyone on my team their letters spelling all this out from HR, they were all so grateful. They said they appreciated that the company finally recognized their work. 2 of my employees cried.
But I got very disgusted with one of my buddies on another team. She went on about how they should have done it a long time ago and other folks in the company doing similiar work were still probably making more than we were. I told her better late than never and how it would have been so easy and so much cheaper for the company to ship our job overseas. They chose not to do that and are sticking with us. She told me I was right and looked embarassed!

Being that so many people are absolutely certain they are right beyond any remote question I doubt love can exist in that environment. People, if one, absolutely right way to run a country existed it would have been discovered and followed a long time ago. Governments exist to benefit certain groups of people. Don’t doubt it. To be honest, I’ve found that I actually prefer dating conservatives who know I’m liberal, versus liberals themselves. The reason? With the conservatives, we’ve been able to talk about things in a respectful manner that’s based in the fact that we realize we want the same thing — a safe, prosperous country. We simply disagree about the best way to accomplish that, and where exactly the line lies between “personal lifestyle choice” and “protecting vulnerable members of society.”
Liberals, on the other hand, have generally proven impatient whenever I’ve insisted on acting in accordance with my values in terms of my *personal choices*. The way they see it, if I’m willing to “compromise” my religion by being a liberal in the first place (it’s no compromise to be a Catholic liberal if you are also pro-life, and I am), I should be willing to compromise my personal choices too. They’ve also proven far less respectful of my religious beliefs.
For example, I hold to the Church teaching about artificial birth control. When I’ve dated conservatives, they understood that I insist on it being my belief and won’t vote to force it on others. When I’ve dated liberals, they’ve gotten angry when I, personally, refused to use artificial birth control. In my mind, the latter is far less tolerant than the former.
Do I think it’s easy? No. But do I think it’s possible? My experience says YES, absolutely and in fact in some situations it might even be preferable for those of us who aren’t 100% conservative or 100% liberal.

8:30 sounds great because the restaurant shouldn’t be too packed by then and it gives us plenty of time to hang and get down to the Flame by 11:30. So, who’s all in?
disco~ I’m getting plenty, but if I have a pet peeve it is people who want me to respect their views but then trample all over mine. Live and let live. Honestly, I am glad that Obama made history. However, we have survived under presidents that were great and we have survived under presidents that were not so great. It’s four year. In the grand scheme of things, it is a drop in the time space continuum. Get over it or celebrate, but either way, let’s just STFU and move on! Can I tell you? I was actually THRILLED about Hurrican Sandy because it gave my newsfeed something besides political posts. I love politics and debating as much as the next person, but we have gone WAY beyond that with these past two elections and it has been down right ugly. That takes all of the fun out of the debate for me. IJS…

Swiss, I was in the Denver area, and even though the political views may be open, the racial tension was still there. Didn’t see many black men out there, and everywhere I went I could tell from the minute I got to the rental car desk.

Comon – I agree, if it was just about the difference in opinion on policy, I can deal all day. But this mess has gotten ugly. For example, every since the 2008 election, one of my coworkers has this screen saver on his iPhone of a little girl giving the middle finger. The caption says Screw U Oba—! He puts it in my view whenever he can. I completely ignore it.
Single – Been to Denver a few times, got that same vibe.

S/H — In defense of my people, though, while I’m sure some of them had nefarious motives for offering to “help,” a lot of them may have just been a little too excited to prove how open minded they were by offering to help a black dude. They don’t get many such opportunities out there, as you could see…

Rich- if you truly did not care who won, why are you referring to the President as “Obumbum”? are you including yourself in the rude group? I have seen bad behavior from both sides, although I have to admit that the behavior from the Obama supporters seemed to be more bragging while the behavior from the Romney supporters seemed to be more rude and disrespectful. As I said earlier, at least respect the office regardless of who is sitting in the chair. The election is over, let’s get down to business (but hopefully not “business as usual”)

Isn’t being flexible while dating part of dating? I’m not talking limber flexible, but one must be flexible so compromise can come into the picture. Not saying one has to compromise their morals or their character, but being flexible is important.

MsAtl – I’ve seen a ton of rudeness on both sides today on Facebook, but honestly, most of it has been from the Obama supporters. I’m just appalled at some of my friends (on both sides). I don’t bring up my political views in a public forum because I don’t want to deal with the hatred from both sides of the coin. I’ve lost respect for a lot of people in the past few months…

S/H – just last night a little fellow in the shoe store offered me too much help, too many times. I let it slide though. he was a young’un and probably truly just anxious to be helpful. now, not too long ago I was in a jewelry store. a typical jewelry store where every daggone thing is locked up in the case!!! this chick literally came out from behind the glass to walk with me as I browsed. now mind you she didn’t walk with me, walk with me but after I moved here she’d come. I finally just asked her for a business card and promptly went home and emailed the company about her. they sent me a $100 gift card.

MsAtl~ I think you may perceive it as more rude than it actually being more rude based on your political position. Innately, we all have a tendency to vilify the opposing position more than our own. I am blessed to have a very diverse group of friends. However, I have a FB friend who happens to be a soror and her behavior and comments over the past few months have made me ashamed to call her a Delta. If I did not know what a stellar woman she is OUTSIDE of politics, I would be appalled. I just think it is important to remember that each person arrives at the same point in life with different sets of baggage. I know her story so I understand some of the vitrol in her comments, however, I did message her and tell her she needs to do better and be better because she is a better and stronger person than that. Remember, perspective is often reality for that person.

I’m not in hiding. I was back re-reading. My 3:47 was in response to something S/H commented on. And, ummm, yeah, if you are saying that anyone should die because they don’t agree with you politically, you are a judgemental pr!ck. That’s not rude it’s true. If you put the shoe on the other foot, you would be calling for someone’s blood.
My 4:03 is not rude. It’s true. Did your life end when G.W. was president? Obviously not because you’re still here. Did your life end when Clinton was president? Again, obvious answer. There is nothing rude in the comment. I am tired of hearing from BOTH sides about the political issues. Did you know who you were voting for in January? I bet if I polled everyone on this site they did. I know I did. Therefore, why talk about it? Be about it. Just because I disagree with your opinion doesn’t make me rude.

Common- I agree that a lot of it is perception, however some things do not require an preceiving or thought at all. I consider myself pretty open-minded. As a matter of fact, my kids know that they are free to vote for whomever they want, just vote. I do not hold anyone’s political beliefs against them as long as you can be respectful and not hold mine against me. I actually do not tell many people who I voted for or share my political beliefs because I want people to judge me on my own merit. I also do not automatically assume that all Blacks voted for Obama or vice versa. Politics, while interesting, can be just plain ugly.

Not a sore loser Ex. I just feel that sometimes people can go to far with things. (On both sides) Realistically, my airline stock didn’t just go up because a lot of Romney supporters hopped last minute flights out of the country. Similarly, my pay did not go up at work because we have a black president and I’m black.
