Love and Politics

Imagine how awkward a date can be when you realize you have polar opposite views on politics. It happens a lot more than you would think. A reader emailed about being hugely disappointed that her new beau has staunch conservative views. She is concerned that it is something that can’t really be reconciled in a relationship. She wonders if she should even try.

Do you think that in order for a relationship to have a shot at lasting, you have to have the exact same outlook on politics?

Have you ever dated someone who had vastly different political opinions than your own? How did you make it work?

Election night was probably the best night to meet someone with shared political views or interests. Did you meet anyone fascinating while you were waiting on election results?

How important is it to have aligned political beliefs? Would you consider it a deal breaker?

S/H – funny. I was really thinking I had a new word to add to my cache but birther doesn’t have enough sting to it to make it worth my while. “shut up you birther” just sounds like a punk move. lol.

Are we sure that Colorado and Washington are the only states that legalized mary jane for recreational use last night? Utah might be in the running…

Disco – I feel ya.

One of my best friends from high school is a Jehovah’s Witness. When my family would have birthday or Christmas or any holiday celebrations, she could not come.

One of my good friends that is a very devout Baptist started falling for a Muslim and she was extremely torn because he stated if they married he wanted her to convert and she did not want to.

I could not see myself converting and not ever celebrating Christian holidays. So while I can work with or be friends all day long with different people, I draw the line at marrying into such.

My JW friends always call me on my birthday. They just don’t actually say the words “Happy Birthday.”

And I always call them and say “I hope YOUR day is happy.”

Disco- lol @ Shut up, you birther. Btw- I like Pepsi better, but I buy Coke for my son. I made the mistake of handing out leftover Halloween candy and was told by one person that she could not accept it because she was a Jehova’s Witness. I feigned ignorance and told her I didn’t realize they couldn’t eat candy.
Robert- thanks. I want to put a face to the person also because I can’t see through sheets.

@ABC – I hate to see young people like you support the GOP/tea party candidate (Romney) as a legitimate candidate for President of the USA. Did you grow-up in a home that practiced hatred and fear? Do you have friends that are different from you (Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, etc.)? Do you live in a neighborhood that is diversified? Does your place of work have a diverse work force? What is wrong with you?

see mrs. atl? birther just doesn’t have any sting to it. if I call you a name I want it to hurt.

robert – great questions. I know they weren’t directed at me but I’ll answer them anyway.

did I live in a home with hatred and fear? fear? definitely. hatred? we weren’t allowed to say the word hate. not saying we didn’t still say it but there were consequences if we got caught. lol.

do I have friends that are different from me? absolutely do. sometimes the more different the better. different can turn you on to new things.

diverse neighborhood? some but could be more. diverse workplace? not hardly.

Single – I just don’t see the point in letting myself catch feelings for someone so different, then looking crazy down the line when I realize I can’t deal with the differences or don’t want to convert like they want me to! I don’t believe in putting myself thru unnessary stress.

But I can be friends with you all day! :)

mrs. sexy c – lie was another one we couldn’t say. that one didn’t get me in as much trouble as hate though. seems like whenever my brother and I got into we got to talking about hating each other. my mom was not having that. eventually figured out that we had a greater chance of not getting a whooping if we said “can’t stand” instead of hate.

disco/kimmie~ I also could not say hate. My mother would go ballistic if my brother or I used it. She also did not care for slang. I went through a phase as a tennager where I was to say “You know” all the time (Give me a break, it was the 80’s…) In any event, when I would tell her something and say “You know, we went to the mall and it was like, you know, packed. So, you know we walked over and waited in linbe for like, you know, 3 hours…” (You get the picture). Well, every time I would say “you know” she would interrupt me and say “No I don’t know. I’m waiting for you to tell me” That broke that habit real quick.

@Disco – A “Birther” is a member of the “tea party” homegrown terrorist group(s). “Birther’s” are people who do not believe that President Obama is a natural born citizen of the United States of America. Donald Trump is the “Poster Child” for this terrorist group. Hopefully “Birther’s” will die a quick death and never be heard from again. No other President in our history has ever had to prove his citizenship and be constantly harrassed by these “Birther” movement lunatics.

I was trying to decide whether I should even read the blog today because of all the political stuff. Now that the election is over, can’t we all just go about our merry little ways? I’m appalled at some of the hatred being spewed (by both sides) on Facebook. It was bad enough the past couple of days…does it need to continue?

Anyway…on topic – it is possible to be in a relationship with someone with different political views as long as you both keep yourselves in check. I don’t think I could date someone who was too the extreme on opposite views. I dated someone who was on the same side as me, but he was much more extreme. He would get heated with me when I agreed with him! Looking back, it was a little funny…

Mr. Nu Nu and I are seeing eye to eye on pretty much everything….I’d say that’s a win win And for those areas where we differ, there’s a vast amount of respect, so in that regard, it ain’t a big deal
awww. now that’s ^ the sweetness!

hey bluz – as bad as all that hatred is it’s just an unpleasant little reminder of the truth. folks love to talk diversity but not all folks live it. folks love to say how America has come a long way and that may be true but there’s still a long way to go. just have to study the hatred and learn from it. just my take though.

disco – I am one who has opted to not share my political beliefs online. It’s really no ones business who I voted for. I won’t be whining nor gloating. It’s hard to see some of the things people are saying and continue to bite my tongue. It’s just sad how some people are reacting. I feel a certain way today and I choose to keep it to myself. It’s just a sad world. And my mama wonders why I choose to not have children…
