Smart Phones Killed Dating?

I read a pretty compelling argument on a blog recently that said smart phones killed dating. Wait, is dating dead!? I can agree that smart phones have given dating a nasty virus. To some, they may have even put dating in the ICU. I think it is self-inflicted and it can be corrected, though!

With technology, social networking, social media, how can we harness all that cool tech stuff to actually enhance our dating experiences? What are clearly defined challenges that smart phones and technology bring? What are ways we can creatively handle those challenges?

In your own experiences, would you say that your smart phone has added to your game? Taken away from it? No change at all?

Happy Monday everyone!

If you have to stay on your phone during the date, you should of sat home. Its rude plain and simple. I witnessed a couple – she was texting the whole time he sat there with his arms crossed. Why bother going out with someone if you stay on your phone, if someone else is more appealing to you go out with them, don’t have the other person sit there like a lump you can care less about.
I do think people use their phones for added game. Oh i am checking my email, the excuse goes — looks more like you are texting waiting for a response then texting again. I don’t have to deal with you, i think men and women forget this point. There are plenty of people out there, i don’t have to give you my time to watch you and your phone.

I am so lost on this one, what does any kind of phone have to do with dating?

Lee, texting, talking or anything else other than paying attention, during a date is just rude!

No texting destroyed dating, because now when people go on dates they have nothing to talk about. Its destroying the english language as well.

If anything is ‘destroying dating’ it’s people conflating dating with hooking up.

@DK – texting isn’t ruining the English language; I blame parents and ignorance for that. Parents should teach their kids that words used in text conversation is not appropriate for use in any other setting; and ignorant people should know better, but then if they did, they wouldn’t be ignorant – so there’s that.

Good morning gang,

Re books: The beau was trying to get me a Kindle since I like to read. However, I refused because I love having that book to hold, the way it smells, and not looking into another computer-like screen all day. Eyes need a damn rest!

Re cell phones

I will say that often times I see folks using their cells phones as crutches to get through socially awkward moments…or just as social crutches period. Take this blog for instance; It’s easy to be whoever you want to be, say what you want to say and play up a virtual reality. But if we were to take away the computer screens, it could be really WEIRD in person. People are getting away from in your face interaction or even voice to voice interaction i.e picking up a damn phone and talking as opposed to texting, instant messaging, emailing. I’m guilty of it to a certain degree…

Good Morning, bloggies! Hope everyone’s weekend was fabulous!

On Topic~ If dating is dead, we are the one’s who killed it. It started in little ways and has progressed to the instant gratification, freeze dried mess that it is now. Soooo glad I am married!

re books~ I love to hold a book in my hands, but I love my Kindle too. I can be anywhere and if I finish a book, I just download another and start over again. Also, the iPad weighs a lot less than “Of Mice & Men” IJS…

Morning blog. Drive by commenting…again. First things first @Comon, YES! Yes I did. :-) I reiterate my disgust for that whiny #$% C_ _ _ _ Collingsworth.

On topic: I’m in agreement with the confusion surrounding the reference to the smartphone. Huh? My interpretative senses are tingling and telling me Diva meant technology as a whole. To wit, I say it depends.

Perhaps it has made the process easier and more streamlined, or a bit more impersonal. Depends on the end-users goal I suppose.

Comon — It was, indeed, a good sports weekend. The only bad thing about it is that ND won, so we have to keep hearing about them.

Oh, and one more for your winners list: Moi. :D Your boy had a convincing win at line 1 to help lead my ALTA team on to the city finals on Saturday. The team we played in the semi’s were bragging before the match that their line 1’s hadn’t lost in over 2 seasons. But then, they hadn’t played us. :D

Morning All!
I have been guilty of using my phone, whether to answer a call or text, while in a social situation. I have gotten much better about it. However, I can’t say that smart phones killed dating any more than I can say that FaceBook ruins relationships. If dating and relationships are ruined, it’s people and what they do with those things that ruin dating and relationships.

And, I agree, just because a text came through or a phone call, you don’t have to answer it. Let it go to voice mail. If you have children and they’re not calling, answer it later.

Single- I saw that on the news this morning. Sad. I wonder whether there will be a lawsuit because the zoo did not have a top over the den. What do you think Common?
Btw- I am not saying there should be one, I am just pointing out that society is so litigious that we sue for our own negligent actions, which leads companies to try to protect us from ourselves. (thinking back to the tag on my hair dryer which sayd not to use while sleeping because some nut apparently tried it).

Dating isn’t dead, and smart phones aren’t causing its demise. If you reason that technology kills dating, then dating has been dying ever since it began. Maybe dating as YOU know and ejnoy it is changing, but that’s generally among a younger generation of daters that you aren’t interested in anyway.

Hey everyone. DK What’s good man? Long time.

“In your own experiences, would you say that your smart phone has added to your game?”

We live in a society that places a premium on electronic communication “gadgets” (phones, pad, tablets, pc, etc.). I prefer to date women who use their “gadgets” appropiately. I see too many relationships break-up over using communication “gadgets” inappropiately. If you are constantly sending/receiving text messages or talking on the phone you are not the woman for me. I hate follower’s but I love leaders. Never date follower’s.

I hate to see grown Men acting like women always playing with their “gadgets” . You can always tell a Man who was raised by his Mama and grew-up with no Real Man in the house. He exhibits female tendacies such as constantly sending/receiving text messages just like a woman. No wonder ATL has so many gay and dow-low Men. Sorry ass “Bama’s”. Grow some “Balls” and be a Man. Stop sending/receiving text messages just like a woman..

Morning All!!

Dreams, I agree with your post.

Single – I agree, I’ve never understood why some people feel they HAVE to answer every call. One of my good friends is like that, and this was before cell phones were so prevalent. I would be over to her house, other friends might be there and if that phone rang, she felt she HAD to answer it! And didn’t understand why I didn’t jump every time the phone rang in my house! I told her that’s what I had voicemail for. Plus, I am free to do whatever I want with my phone in my house. There is no law that says I have to answer it, I told her I could decide I didn’t even want to have a phone if I wanted! She looked at me like I had 3 eyeballs!! She would answer that phone and stay on it like a teenager, forgetting whomever was around!

When bluetooths came out, she stayed wired to hers! She went to a party once, hoping to meet someone nice. One guy asked her about the bluetooth on her ear, but that was it. She left the party disappointed. I told her walking around glued to her “phone” made her unapproachable and that she should have just stayed home. I think it finally dawned on her how juvenile and rude she was being.

MsAtl~ Funny you should say that, because when I saw the story this morning, that was my first thought. Although, there are factors that will play into that such as: Were there signs posted saying not to sit on top of the enclosure glass? Have there been issues in the past with people losing things, dropping things into this enclosure? (In other words, would a reasonable person believe that the zoo SHOULD have known there was a danger of someone or something falling into the pit.) It is a sad story though.

Leggs~ Thank you for the thank you note for our first “date”. I had a good time too. And yes, I hope we can get together again soon. Thanks so much, again and I will report back with all the pertinent details.

I was a successful playah until my oxy addiction and new smart phone made me sloppy. With the old cell phone, I could just type and send the same “Hey Baby, Miss you lots, back in town soon, can’t wait for your kisses” stuff to all my different bidches. But somehow my smart phone put it through to the facebook, and it became a three-way conversation with two of them (while I was on vacation with a third). One was in the middle of doing my taxes for free too. Chick is good with numbers but believed any BS I fed her. It was the other little c-word that busted me out with her sarcasm. I should get off the drugs, I know, but they’re the only way I can stand myself anymore. Had to un-friend all my tail on FB and leave town for fresh meat. Dudes: always take the time to type a separate message to each one. I know they’re not really worth the trouble, but you don’t want to mess up your freebies.

These social networks, phones and such has made us lazy. We have gone digital. We dont have to take you out (technically), a few slick inboxes a phone convo to get most stuff out the way and then the date to see if ya’ll ok to take off.

Robert~ Have to cosign on Dan’s 11:55. IDK how texting is “unmanly”. Especially, if you, like me and I would assume MsAtl, are often in places where you can’t take phone calls. Judges tend to frown on that. Also, I am sure MsA can back me up here as well, there are a lot of very masculine judges that communicate by text while in court all of the time.

MsAtl/Comon ~ there may not have been a lot of signs saying not to stand on ledge, but common sense has to come into play. What they did have was a net below to catch debris that attendees may drop and another net under that one. However, the child bounced off the first net into their cage. Don’t know now wide the net was or how study it was, but it wasn’t sturdy enough to catch a child. So sad and foolish on the mother’s part!

Common- Yes to back-up; I do not believe texting is feminine. Also, I have seens phones get taken up in court. Not to mention, in depos or mediation, I cannot take a call but my secretary will message me if she needs to. Now, I have to say that when the male deputy’s phone rang in court and his ringtone was Mariah Carey, I raised an eyebrow, lol.
Leggs- Oh, definitely common sense is needed, but is not used often enough.

@Dan & Comon – I If was your “Daddy” and you asked me that question – why is texting unmanly?
I would look you right in your eyes like a loving Father would do and tell you the truth. Son(s) pick-up the phone and call her. Real Men do not act like women. Handle your business…Grow-up

Comon ¢

November 5th, 2012

Leggs~ So that answers that question (at least partially). If there was a net below the enclosure, they knew that things could fall down into the area. So, depending on whether or not there was signage in place, she may have a case. I know it seems like common sense would be a factor, but unfortunately it’s not. Remember the woman who burned herself with the McDonald’s coffee and then sued Mickey D’s because she didn’t realize that hot coffee between your legs in a moving vehicle is not a good idea? Yeah, like i said earlier, common sense isn’t nearly as common as people make it out to be.
