I read somewhere that women should consider sending a thank you gift after a first date. I’ve never done this personally, but I imagine that is a surefire way to make a great impression. Maybe more women should think outside the box when it comes to dating?
Guys, what would you do if someone gave you a thank you gift because she really enjoyed the date you planned for her?
Ladies, have you ever felt compelled to send a note or thank you gift after a really fantastic date? Would you feel uncomfortable reciprocating a man’s effort that soon after your dating relationship began?
We all can get in dating ruts from time to time! What are some unique ways to think outside the box when it comes to dating?
Happy Friday!

MsAtl – Part of me wants to give him a half pass because of his age, but he also knows better. I think he’s an intelligent man. He’s playing it off like it was a joke, but that’s not a funny one. He has yet to apologize for it. Even the major of Forsyth said he was shocked and if that had been said about black people, he would have walked out. Really…I think he should have walked out anyways.
I think the biggest thing that bothers me is that I don’t even see the story on the front of AJC website and if it has been a white person saying that about black people, it would be ALL OVER and he would be forced to apologize and would never live it down…no matter what his age is…

What up…Hey Bluz, is that a jedi mind trick you are playing on us….Remember, we are talking about a man who has seen the worst of your ancestry…he founded the SCLC…when white people were lettting dogs loose on Black people, he was there…when white folks were cutting on fire hydrant hoses and spraying it directly at Black folks, he was there, when somebody took a shotgun and killed MLK he was there….he made the statement in a tongue and cheek fashion in a mixed crowd, a joke sweetie, but if he really meant it….he kinda earned a right to say it don’t you think?

Aaah, I’m not sure about that Bluz. I recall that when Judge Arrington asked the White people to leave the courtroom so that he could speak privately with Black defendants, it was ALL over the news- CNN, everything! He was even called to give the same speech to the media and everyone else, that he had given behind closed doors that day. I agree with you that the “joke” was in bad taste. I’ve heard worse. I am not excusing his behavior because he does know better.

Jake – it’s one thing to say that’s how he used to think, but to say that he’s back to that? Not cool.
Also…don’t assume MY ancestors did anything. My ancestors are from Europe and Mexico. Also, MY Cherokee ancestors had their land stolen long before slavery…

Bluz — I started to respond, but I think Jake pretty much covered it.
I would just add this. Is there a double standard over who can say what about whom and public/media reaction to it? Yes. But there are much worse double standards that we come out on the better end of. Like the double standard over disproportionate incarceration rates, unemployment rates, sentencing for drugs like crack vs. cocaine (even though they’re the same drug, just with different clientele), disproportionate selection of minority neighborhoods for environmental hazards like landfills, etc. Before you get outraged over who can say what without creating an uproar, think about the bigger picture.

Bluz~ Remember the convo we had about divided sisters? This goes back to it. To put it in a different perspective, recently some friends of mine from high school were having a very heated discussion on FB about the fact that the Walton HS chorus has elected bot to participate in the ASO Christmas pageant this year because they did not want to pick and choose who would get to attend the show from their chorus. My “friends” were outraged that the ASO was discriminating against their kids by saying that their chorus was not “diverse” enough and therefore they wanted them to mesh with another chorus (I believe it was Tri-Cities or Redan). They said that they could not control who chose to move into their neighborhood. And on the surface, that is an excellent argument. However, if you look at the deeper picture, East Cobb has done an excellent job of making sure that their schools stay “lily white” for the most part. In the Wallton School district, there are no apartments. There is no bus service within 5 miles of the area. Etc. Etc. Etc. Therefore, like I told my friends, you can bob and weave all you like, but the reality is that you take the privileges when they benefit you but the first thing you want to holler is “racism!” when it doesn’t.
I say all that to say, white are the only people I know who “classify” their whiteness. European=white. And, I am sure, that if I looked at you I would never know you are Mexican or Indian or Scottish or Irish or whatever else. Blackness is not like that. From the moment I walk into a room, people know I am black. And just as quickly, they know that you are white.
So, is there a certain privilege that comes along with having endured the history that blacks have? Sure. We get to make off the cuff remarks like Lowery made and it’s not front page news. But the systematic privileges that you receive from being white far outweigh any slight of words that Rev. Lowery may have gotten away with. IJS…
