The height requirement
Everyone has those little dating preferences when it comes to looks and appearances. We think that what we are attracted to is a personal choice but I often wonder how much is influenced by other things?
Obviously, the idea of beauty and what constitutes attractiveness gets fed to us in many ways. I don’t know if we are always cognizant of how often this happens. This is especially true when it comes to having a height requirement.
Do you think that something like height can really make a difference in being happy with someone? I know of many women who actually believe that they could not make things work with a man who is as tall or shorter than them. It seems, I don’t know, naive?
Of course we all have those physical features we know we don’t want, but do you think that kind of thing matters ultimately?
Height, weight, hair, teeth, are seemingly small things but some of us base dating decisions on them. Is this a maturity thing? Do we ever outgrow the shallow things or do some of us stick to them?

“Of course we all have those physical features we know we don’t want, but do you think that kind of thing matters ultimately?” They only really matter in the beginning, the thing about it, unless you’re put in a setting where you would get to know that person, you probably won’t get to know any of the other great things about them.
And since I’m vertically challenged I’ve heard the height excuse plenty of times, but had it turn into an “I can deal with it” situation after getting to know me and my other qualities. But by then it’s usually too late.

It’s all about what pleases the eye! I would not eat food that does look good in my eyes,I don’t care what ‘good’ nutrients the food might contain.
Bless those who are not vane,like myself,who will see an ‘ugly sighting’ and think about the ‘gold’ inside of that. They have the ‘what would Jesus do’ thing in them.

Ok height matters to women and I’m grateful I meet that criteria and I understand it’s a woman’s preference. Character trumps height and I know guys lacking it and hate everybody for their short comings. Then you have the guy who embraces what he is and is comfortable with himself. Lady’s to me you’re better off with the latter.

good morning. if I were a woman who was 5’10” tall I wouldn’t trip over dating a guy the same height as me. I’m not. I’m short. to date a man the same height as me would almost leave me to dating 5th graders. I also recognize that no one characteristic truly stands alone. for me short and nice looking might beat out tall and ugly. short and muscular would beat out tall and out of shape. I’m not even going into personality traits. we all have shortcomings (no pun intended). lol.

ex – that comment re tall folks having “assumed” authority put me in mind of the phrase “yellow-wasted”. are you familiar with it? that theory that light skin is good in itself but it’s even better if you have good hair, thin features and not brown eyes to go with it? I say that to say that I’ve also had occasion to comment on someone being tall-wasted or fine-wasted or smart-wasted or whatever. just because you have the feature, trait or characteristic doesn’t mean you are willing/able to take the most advantage of it. sometimes the good features/traits are wasted on the wrong individual.

I see we’re off and rolling this morning.
Height: My preference is tall. But, I can work with someone “not so tall” as long as he’s pretty decent. I’m short, so I tend to not want to date short men. I don’t necessarily have to go over 6′0″, somewhere around 5′8″ (my fingers struggled to type that…lol) and up I guess is okay.

Good Morning!
Height is important to me simply because I don’t want to be looking down on my significant other constantly. I think that there is something about looking up to a man that makes me feel more secure with him. Just personal preference.
However, if the rest of the personality traits were there, I think I could get past short. IJS. Tall and trifling or short and got it together? Yeah, height would go out of the window.

G’morning, I can honestly say, I’m not one who is into height, From my experince, tall men can be over compensating, overanalyzing and rigid! Entitled much…..I’m short, 5′4 and to date someone shorter, well he would be a midget. My short, is a man who is along the lines of 5′4 to 5′8. Anything taller than 5′8 is tall to me. And I don’t do the crick in my neck kissing him or tippy toes to put my arms around his neck. I like the eye to eye contact while standing up. We like what/who we like and for some there’s just no compromising. Only down size I had dating a short guy was not being able to wear my heels. The cute lil black dress does not look good with flats.

Lol, Disco- I agree with you on the fifth grader thing, I am vertically challenged too. Never heard the term “yellow-wasted,” but that theory always made me want to lecture someone about ignorance. I don’t have a height requirement, but I do require manners, decency, etc.

mrs. atl – my grandmama and ‘nem (lol) used to say “yellow gone to waste”. at some point in time we changed it to “yellow wasted”.
CC – if dude had everything going for him and the only downside I could see was that he was short, I would be a fool to pass it up. I’m grown and understand that you can’t have everything. if the only true compromise was a height requirement I’d be way ahead of the game.

CC – speaking of fashion, I’ve always bought average/regular pants instead of petites since I’m the tall end of petite and I wear heels all the time. ordered some stuff last week and I swear the pants just seemed super long. I pondered briefly if I was shrinking or if the store is changing their sizing system. I’m going to chalk it up to having received a reject pair of pants. lol.

My guy is short, and I don’t look at his idiosyncrasies as a result of him being short. Look we short people are always going to be made fun of or passed by for numerous of things. And we’re almost always labeled as having an attitude because of our height. I’ve learned to laugh it off but it does hurt sometimes esp when there’s malic behind it. Short people do have a reason to live!

CC – generally I try almost everything on. I only online shop at NYCO because of the great discounts and the fact that I’ve worn their stuff for so long that I was (until now – lol) totally comfortable with their sizes.
button – the short thing, in my opinion, is another double standard. men are judged much more harshly for being short than women are. for women, being short is almost “cute”. almost like pudgy or chunky on a child is cute. not so cute on a grown up. it is what it is.

Height is important but is not a deal breaker. I am 5′9′ without shoes…add stilettos then I stand at 6′0′ so my obvious preference is for men who are taller than I am. However, I can deal with some who is slightly shorter than I am as long as he is comfortable with my height and my preference to wear high heels. The issue goes both ways. His character and love (for me) is more important than his height.

O/T: Okay, here goes. Yall recall me telling you about my sisters hurried marriage to the guy she hardly knew…well, it has been revealed that he is actually still married to his ‘ex’ wife. He’s claiming that he thought she divorced him. He has been trying to controll and monitor everything my sister does the last two months they’ve been married. He also told her that if she did not change my niece’s last name to his, he would have nothing to do with her. He’s deleted people out of her phone (male family members) he calls her all day everyday, is constantly accusing her of cheating, etc. So I suppose my sister has succumbed to the pressure of trying to keep it all under wraps. Her stress is beginning to show in the loss of weight. Was 135, now down to 115…

disco/Cel – No, she is definitely ready to let this go. Apparently, she’s been holding all of this stuff in as to not look bad or hear all the I told ya so’s. My mom had told me yesterday some things so I was going to call her this morning. However, due to the fact that Mr. Crazy is always checking her phone, I didn’t want to cause any drama for her. She actually reached out to me this morning to give me a heads up. I didn’t judge her, I just told her no matter what, I am here for her and keep me posted. So i’m sure a lot is going to go down within the next few days. I guess she was just trying to appease him all this time as to not rock the boat but she basically said she is not okay and to try not to say too much via her phone.
SH – Dude had not been working until this week which I guess gave my sister time to breathe and have a chance to talk to my mom. Before he was working, he’d take her to work, drive back to spend her lunch hour with her, then come back to pick her up…wanted to ensure she wasn’t spending time with anyone else.

S/H – I’ve cruised alone and have to admit I enjoy it. there’s something to be said for not having to share those cramped quarters and being able to do what you want without having to consult someone else (on ship and off). I met a lot of folks and most were open to letting me eat with them or kick it with them. the catch is those daggone supplements.

On topic – I’m barely reaching 5′5″, but when I was dating I seemed to be a short magnet! I tried to give them a chance, but (sorry Albert) the Napoleon complex would rear it’s ugly head eventually! I just cannot deal with a man that is not confident or comfortable in their own skin. I would try to be open minded, but they themselves would sabotage things. Hubs is 5′10″ and built nice, so that’s all good!

Good afternoon all! I had to comment on this topic. Yes, height does matter! I’m 6′2″ with no shoes on, so I don’t want to look over the top of anyone’s head. My husband was 6′ tall. I hardly ever wore heels because I didn’t want to tower over him. Of course, character traits (honestly, kindness, etc.) are ultimately more important than physical traits, but I just can’t bring myself to date a short man.

Wow…on a call with my mgr and team. She just said, our team narrowly escaped layoffs. I’m glad (sort of and in this regard), the added another portfolio. Busy means work. Single – What are the shorties compensating for? In my experience it ran the gamut, and I never understood it. None I dealt with had “endowment” issues, but just lacked confidence in themselves and were not comfortable in their skin. I was with them because I liked them, but it was never enough for them. They had the problem, not me, cause I looked beyond the height to try to get to know the person inside. Some folks get in their own way.

Single – I have seen countless tall, model-like women with short dudes and they seem happy as all get out! In fact, those dudes seem to go for chicks almost double their height and everyone is cool with it. Kimmie the one time I’ve been accused of having the complex was by an ex, whom I meet online. We were having a conversation one day and she said if we had meet under different circumstances she wouldn’t have dated me. She was cool as hell, attractive, elegant, smart, well spoken and helped me to get up to speed when I first came on board. The last time a female showed me DISisinterest I was in this hood azz spot called “the cave”. Its an after hours joint one of the young bruz dragged me too. He’s on mollies, vibin, I’m just standing round looking. I approached some young trashcan azz, foot draggers and joined their converstation and asked if they needed some drinks. I was bored. They looked at me and one of them said could you leave us alone. Even though they were hood rats. It still shook me a lil bit. It had been so long since I got dissed. I told my dog about it, he laughed and said, man they don;t know any better.
