Do men feel pressure to marry?

I don’t know what its like to be single and male, but I can tell you being single and female definitely comes with pressure. The older you get *cough* the more people look at you and start to comment on why you aren’t married, how to fix it, and telling you that you have something left to do in life.

I have never heard of any of my guy friends talk of the same kinds of pressure to be someone’s husband, though. Some of them comment about feeling the need or pressure to have kids, but not necessarily with a wife. Do men feel pressure from family, friends, or even society to get married?

Do you think that there are actual marriages that are a result of “pressure” from everyone else to be married? How do you think that impacts the health of the marriage?

Would you consider dating and marrying someone simply because you feel you should be dating and marrying?

Happy Monday!

Yes people do tell you that you should get married, especially when they find out you’ve never been married. But the key to answering that question and not feeling pressure is to ask yourself, are you living your life for you, or others?

I don’t operate under pressure or live worrying about what others think,. Unless they’re going to step in my shoes, living my life for me then no, they won’t have a say. Live your own life and to the fullest.

20 years after a divorce it’s safe to assume I’ve felt no pressure to re-marry. I’ll never say never but if I don’t I’ll live and let die.

I’m sure shot gun weddings still exist in the hills of the Apalachian mountains and else where here in the states. Royals around the world are notorious for setting up marriages for blue blood. Egyptians were consistantly under pressure to marry their brother or sister to maintain divine true blood. It’s not as bad as we think we have a different cultural understanding.

Yes All people, men and women, feel pressure especially when they have never been married.

Getting married is the natural inclination for most normal people. And by normal I mean hetero!

You always look at a man in a kinda way if he has Never been married and in his late 40s.
And most women want to get married, they just can’t find suitable partners or they haven’t mastered.
the art of closing the deal.

Most women can’t cook which is a wholenuther issue here. They just wanna be married but don’t understand that getting married means taking care of hubby. The way to a man is through the stomach! I said ‘through’ the stomach coz that leads to other things. Follow me?

A woman who masters whatimtalkingbout will Never have a ‘Diva condition’. Will never face the pressure.

Diva condition= getting old and living alone, lonely ,never been proposed to.

Jane Austen said it neatly in Pride and Prejudice: “IT is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Women have been manipulating single men for generations in order to get them married and off the market. The pressure on men to marry is there, and it is not subtle nor kind.

From the male side, especially in the south, there is also that subtle pressure to have sons and keep the family name going for another generation. A family with all girls but only one boy is especially prone on having that one son marry quickly and have sons himself, so the family name will continue.

And recently, in talking to my younger male relatives, there is more of this “find a rich girl” pressure. Since so many women are out there with professions and good incomes, it will certainly help the family to find one. In the past, we looked for women with a father and large land holdings. Now we look for girls with either a profession or a trust fund. No woman with a million dollars is homely or undesirable.

It used to be that men could remain single past thirty. Now you are either looked upon as being gay, or possibly a pedaphile. If you are either one, the pressure is on for those men to get married quickly so other people whon’t discover the truth.

Finally, the worst pressure is on an only child (of either sex) with a single mother is to marry while young and settle down. Preferably close by to Mom.

No. I don’t fall into “Human Doctrine’s,” I could care less what “society” calls normal, and I do exactly what I want with my life.

FTR, I’ve been with the same woman for 12 years, and we’re happily unmarried. We don’t cheat, lie, or hurt each other – most of my married friends want a relationship like mine. It’s not that marriage can’t be done ‘right’ – that ‘right’ is very subjective – I just so rarely see a traditional happy marriage.

Slim~ Agreed! I was in withdrawal yesterday! LOL!

On topic~ I think that the pressure for people to get married is increased if they are in a relationship. Also, if you have never been married people will constantly ask when you’re going to “settle down”. Settle down= get married and conform to societal norms.

If you have been dating someone for over a year, people will constantly ask when you’re going to “make it legal”. So, yeah, I think that there is pressure to marry at certain points.

Good Morning!

In every arena of my life, I don’t subscribe nor cave to what others think. I’ve been proposed to but the timing wasn’t right. I could have married my kid’s dad but he didn’t have his “stuff” together. Why would I go from the frying pan to the fire (on him) “cause it was the thing to do?” I think being snubbed and pressued to get married often comes from married folks. Well we all know the majority of marriages ain’t exactly thriving. So yeah, I’ll pass on their opinions…lol

What appealed to me as a young girl is so far removed from the reality of people, how they are, how life flows. Yes marriage is appealing when there are ideal, stand-up, suitable mates. When traditional values are upheld. But just jumping in with any ole somebody just because folks think and I should and folks feel I lack without being married is ludicrous.

LeeH1, I am surprised idealism is so prevalent with you. I’ll admit I have some idealism about a woman, and one of them is income from college, but really, she just needs to be able to support herself.

Big Al, I hear ya. When those are the real stats – who’d want to sign up for marriage. Eventually, I think marriage will be an antiquated way of approaching life in the next decade. So many ideals being blown out of “society’s” norm that tradition will soon be subjective like religion.

God instituted marriage and I find no fault with that. I believe (and I’m no expert), things go wrong because people become selfish. I can’t see how somethng established by God, if done right, can go wrong.

So HST you feeling that pressure yet since you finally came up for air (LOL) Big Al forgot one stat, while 50% of marriages may end in death, 100% of lives end in death, instead of worrying about the thoughts and labels that others put on you enjoy your life by doing what’s best for you. If you don’t want children, don’t have them, if you don’t ever want to get married then don’t do it.

1) Boys don’t usually spend our lives dreaming of weddings and such. We are taught to play more ball, war, and such than worrying about getting married. We think of getting the honeypot around the teen years, but not much about getting hitched. Then, in real life, girlie want him to tag her like cattle as his woman. If he hasn’t given it much thought, it can more of as pressure.

2) I saw the game (actually there), I learned what makes a football game very long….replacement refs that don’t know what they are seeing or don’t know the rules. They could no control the game during that long first half.

3. As for Turner, I don’t know the exact charge…I’ve heard DUI and I heard suspicion of DUI because he refused to take the breathalyzer. I haven’t seen any breathalyzer test results anywhere. So, I am truly not sure what he was booked in for other than speeding. Falcons are playing his old team this week (San Diego)

I can only speak for myself. I feel “pressure” because I do not want to be “alone” in my golden years. For example I envey my friends who are married and have grandchildren to enjoy. I would give anything in the world to be so lucky. Even though I have grown children I miss the quality family time during the holiday’s, birthday’s and other special occassions. Would you consider dating and marrying someone simply because you feel you should be dating and marrying? Nope. I feel I deserve to love again and with that comes respect for a healthy relationship between two folks who aspire the same goals together moving forward. IF, it is not merging accordingly I will NOT save face and stay simply to be in a relationship and marry. I know the end results of that I lived it briefly. At any rate, if the relationship is flowing lovingly, respectfully, and on one accord why not explore and if it blossoms into matrimony hooray too! I will never know a loving partnership. Loving your kids is very differently from loving that one person that compliments your style.

On a personal note, I did not feel any pressure ever. I broke off relationship with a good woman before I met Mrs. PG. The woman was good, I was good, but we weren’t good together, IMO. Ultimately, I broke up with her and let her go . I felt it was better than hoping that either she or I changed in that area that bothered me. About 4 months later, I met Mrs. PG during a speed dating event.

Before that particular woman, I was on a self made challenge of having sex on 6 of the 7 continents with women of the continent. Bachelor with money and free time (especially in the spring) . I got 5 of 7 continents. Never expected Antarctica, but I didn’t get Australia either. That is not a goal that is good for settling down and marriage. That South American stuff was so all that. I stopped the search after it. It wasn’t going to topped in Australia.

I can attest that you spend more time and energy chasing after a check (i.e. childsupport) than if you just did the dang thing yourself. Not saying men should not pay or get off scott free having babies, but not providing for. You can make bigger strides and move a little higher if you drop the dead weight. The worst thing in the world is “making” someone do something they absolutely despise doing.

For those women getting babies as a means to funds, that’s a never ending cycle of going nowhere, unless they wake up and wise up. That is just the craziest thing but it happens.

Single and Happy – I agree….somewhat. I made due diligence for taking the kid’s dad to court. Sometimes he paid, sometimes he made excuses. With the man hours, and aggravation of the system and how it works seemingly against the CP, after a while, I said forget it. I never felt like he wasn’t responsible nor did I feel like he shouldn’t be “made” to pay, but taking a chunk out of my life was not worth the time and effort IMO. I did it during my struggling years. When I started advancing and doing better, I found things came together much better for me and child. I resolved to allowing what was coming back on him for not doing, could do a much better job in whipping his behind than I could keeping him and myself tied up in court. So, I said “f a g e t a b o u t h i m”, and haven’t looked back since. Ask me how life turned out for him?

Good day.

“Do you think that there are actual marriages that are a result of “pressure” from everyone else to be married? How do you think that impacts the health of the marriage?”

I think it’s a mixed bag. I think there are some genuine marriages where people are a perfect fit. I also believe that sometimes there are people that feel left out by their friends who are married so they succumb to the pressure of getting close and hitched with anyone rather than waiting for the right one.

I would not consider dating or marrying someone simply because I feel like I should be dating and marrying. I took the summer off from dating and it was one of the best things I could have done. I think that would be a waste of time and lead to the accumulation of baggage on both sides. Wait for your time and embrace where you are right now!

Yes, Speed dating. I didn’t have a date with Mrs. PG. We met after the event while watching the 1998 NBA finals at the bar where the event was held. We watched Jordan shoot over Russell thinking that Jordan 1) pushed off and 2) had completed his second three-peat. She liked Sports and stuff and we hit off. PG~ It depends on the officer whether or not the case will be easier for his attorney. When you get stopped (arrested) for DUI you have to have an ALH (Administrative License Hearing) to determine if (and what type) your license will be suspended pending the adjudication of your charges. IF the officer shows up for that hearing (and it is a big IF) then he will end up making the deal with the devil; He will plead guilty to the DUI in order to keep his license. (That is an over simplification, but you get the gist) If the officer does not show for the hearing, he will get off because there is no evidence to support the DUI. (Again, oversimplification, but you catch it)

Sassy – I agree there. Hopefully that’s the wake-up call she needed. I believe it will help her have a better outlook on her behavior overall, not just the issue with Ocho. It is unfortunate that this sort of drama has to play but I agree too, money of the bottom line.

I was looking at Oprah’s Twitter page and it seems she was have a convo with Iyanla Vanzant and her special with Evelyn? I couldn’t find anything else on it. I would love to see that interview. They made mentioned of her having the “tough talk” with Evelyn. If what I gathered was true, that’s progress.

Speaking on Iyanla..I wonder what she can do for Evelyn…from what I understand both she and her mom were on the show. Still, had she not gotten head butted she’d still be the loud, crass bully she likes to be. Now she’s the victim and she’s playing that to the hilt. The exact sentence was “Little Cents is a b!@tch Azz ninja.” and “He can’t play basketball with us because he is naturally a better player because he’s black”.

Comon while I don’t like the N word in any form, I don’t care who it comes from, those kids are only repeating what they heard some other person, (probably a black person) say, they may not be fully aware that they are not supposed to say it. I know how I handled it when I was 7, I called him a cracker and almost got to fighting if it wasn’t for the teacher sending me home. but these days since it’s “supposedly” okay unless another race uses it I really would have to look at the context (if that’s the right word) of how it was said.

My response, since you have a plan in mind, would be to address the first statement with a lil one by expressing the importance of knowing to which names to answer. (What people call you does not mean as much as what you answer to) and have a talk to the AD/Coach most places it is the same person anyways. He can address it with the whole team in a way that he can, even if the kids hear that language at home.” It it likely that it will get back to parents who taught this language that you know that the language is out there and you aren’t afraid to address.

As to the naturally better because he black, let lil kids know that they cannot just get by with what they have be naturally blessed. They must still work towards improvement>

Yes and I think it should involve a parent(both sets)/teacher/principle conference along with reasons as to why they felt it was acceptable to call him that and reasons as to why it’s NOT okay. Then maybe some sort of discipline such that is’t discouraged from happening again.

Well, the reason that it did not end with that call of me having to go to the school because my boy was fighting was because I have been preparing him for this moment for about 5 years. I am well aware of where we live and with him always being one of a handful, I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. I have always told him that you can’t change someone’s opinion by fighting any more than you can change someone’s religious beliefs by fighting.

So, over the weekend we watched the Herschel Walker story on YouTube (It originally aired on ESPN and if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it!) And I have a meeting to talk with the Headmaster and the AD on Thursday. Not sure what I am going to say yet, but I am sure it will come to me before I get to the meeting.

Hubs was of the opinion that we should give him a one time only free pass to whoop the boys azzes (I did tell y’all my hubby is from the SWAT originally, right?) But I told him that I don’t think that would help the situation. As far as calling the other parents in, I am pretty sure that is where these boys probably heard the word originally. And, no, I don’t think it was a “My bad, I didn’t know it was inflammatory”. I think that they intended to bait him into a fight.

I would say ten years ago I would have been HOT about the whole thing. My first thought now is what are they hearing at home and from folks (i.e. family members) they’re interacting with?

When we first moved to a predominately white neighborhood when I was about 7, I was called the N word a few years after moving there. By that time I was driving. I brought my car to a screeching stop (mom in passenger seat). I jumped out of the car and asked who said it as there were about 4 kids and a toddler standing there. Naturally they all said the baby said it. My mama explained to me then that what they hear from the adults raising them and their environment is what they put out and project.

That it’s children of all races/color will indeed have a safe haven for learning and growning and interacting. Show a united front (you and hubs, your kid and the school). Hubs was of the opinion that we should give him a one time only free pass to whoop the boys azzes

I heard that mess. I thought that he may win this thing until I heard a speech that he made back during the summer at Papa John’s (the pizza guy) house in Indiana. He told people that kids shouldn’t get a loan to attend college. They should borrow money from their parents. I said at that point that he is too out of touching with the condition of the people in the USA. or simply he only wants rich kids to get a college education.

Actually, it made me purchase Papa John’s pizza. I turned to the Monster Slices of Cameli’s pizza on Ponce, instead.

The one azz kicking proposal does have some grounds.

I had an experience where is kick a dude tail when I was in the 3rd grade and the dude was in the 6th grade. He jumped me when I got of the school bus. I grabbed some dirt and thew it in his eyes. The it was the Poppa G show. I damage his face so bad that his nose has remained crooked even when I last saw him. Word definitely got around that I kicked that tail. I never had an off football field fight again.

Oh, the reason for the fight: He wanted to show me my place by telling me to sit in the back of the schoolbus. It was 1983 and Clayton County was integrated.

Sassy~ The sneaking up and fighting them off campus problem is that we never see these kids outside of school. I don’t associate with their parents and he has friends from the neighborhood that he went to public school with that he hangs out with when he is home.

It should be duly noted that these kids are benchwarmers. My father think that it is just plain outright jealousy that he is better than they are and therefore, they need an excuse WHY he is better than them so they go to race. And you are right, Sassy, that is probably something they heard at home.

If I put him in a predominately black school then he will be “Uncle Tom” or “Oreo” or “You talk like you’re white” (Which is my pet peeve, coincidentally) and any other school I choose that is predominately white will most likely have the same issues. TBH, there are no racially balanced (at least moreso than we have now) schools that are even close to our area. We live in the East Cobb/Roswell area. (Hint hint. We have been waging a “war on poverty” for years, yet the more money we spend, the higher the number of people that are living in poverty. If you are a business owner, why should you pay more because you make more? Now we live in a country that wants to punish people for being successful? The more you make the more they take (unless you’re in the 1%). And while all the dems are bItching about the tax breaks for the ultra wealthy, none of them are paying in extra (based on what they think should be fair) Obama paid 13% last year. We pay less in tax than the 1950s. I think the problem started with Ronald Reagan. Trickled down doesn’t work. Although I like it myself, our system feeds off greed. Capitalism means that you have to have something of value to put up to move forward. Greed is one of the deadly sins. Sloth would probable equate to socialism. Communism equate to a deadly sin, too.

I don’t care for either party. They play the american people for the same money (Lobby money). There should be term limits for everyone. I am nearing 40 and this congressional term was the first without a Kennedy in office during my lifetime. Citizens United ruling is gonna make it worse.

Agreed. However, I don’t understand who it is greedy of me to want to keep what I have worked for and not greedy of them to want to take what I have worked for and “re-distribute” it to someone wo has not made te same sacrifices that I have made.

I agree with term limits for all offices. Growing up, we had the same sheriff from the time I was a kid until the time I moved away. It was like he owned the place.

Poppa, I’d vote for you. At this point, I would vote for anyone with a little common sense. (no pun intended) And that is sorely lacking in BOTH parties. For me, this election has come down to who will do the LEAST amount of damage for the next 4 years. Then maybe we can scrap this whole thing and start over.

Mrs Sexy~ While you’re joking, skeletons in the closet are the reason that most of the people who would do an excellent job WON’T run.

No, Darth Visor is too old. I will remember that he is at his heart at Gator. He was a Gator player and a Gator Coach. The only plus for me would be that no one would want to kill me and make him president. Then again, he may call China the UGA of the world.

I was born and raise in Georgia. I have no real hate for UGA. They offered me a free education. I always respect them and Auburn. The creamcicles on the other hand and the Great Pumpkin otherwised known as Phillip Fulmer are people that I like to see lose. You can’t spell Citrus without UT.
