Dating: Play or get played
There are a lot of cynics on the dating scene. Heck, I admit that I was mayor of Bitterville a couple of times. It’s hard not to become at least a little protective of our egos, hearts, and emotions.
I met a really great guy the other day at the recycling center at DeKalb’s Farmer’s Market. We had the most random chat about Atlanta and dating. He was of the mindset that you have to play the dating game – at least a little. If not, you could find yourself being used and abused, even when your intentions are good.
It sounded a little cynical to me, so I asked him when did this attitude about women and relationships come about. He launched into a really awful account of his last girlfriend who played really dirty dating games with him. Of course he is gun shy!
Do you think that a lot of single people think this way? Are we slow to trust the intentions of others? Do we question their motives too much?
If we are all thinking that we have to play or get played, then who is winning?!

I don’t know a lot of cynical people although I understand being cautious. Going into a relationship with the attitude how can I win/gain financially or material assets means nobody wins. As my boo and I were commuting this morning and conversing about many things I thanked him for not coming with games and the amount of time he invest in our relationship. After being single for a while playing games and being played it feels wonderful to be with someone sharing the same goals for an exclusive relationship. The dating game can make one bitter with the knock outs and blows but I truly believe there is someone for everyone and with time those bitter feelings will fade. Throughout the highs and lows of being single I truly remained hopeful even on my darkest days and trust I had many.

And I mean ‘unconditional’ to mean unchanging….loving me for the person I am: Good, bad, ugly and ‘work in progress’. Not just caring during the good while on top, but also when i’m not that usually bubbly funny chick…need it when I’m hurting, when I’m wrong, when I have my ugly cry going on…Love that has my back. Hope that sheds some light for you. (oh and I don’t have any rugrats yet)

“Games” is code of lack of honesty.
Either the person isn’t being honest with you – or themselves.
Now, ‘DAN’ didn’t just come from nowhere, I played my share of ‘games’ during my time in the skreets, but eventually, (for me) it wore thin.
Even the last….few….women I dated prior to getting married (this includes my wife) there were explicit conversations about what my goals and expectations were. Did these conversations happen right away? No. But once I sorted out how I felt about those ladies, the conversations had to be had.
*Note: by sorted out Dan means deciding how she dealt with me, the world, and those ‘quiet moments’.

I agree with Mmeello’s post.
While we want it to be all nice and pretty in the land of love, it hardly ever is. You better be cautious. I lack the ability to take folks at face value (I know…not good). I just don’t believe folks until it’s proven. Sort of opposite of trusting until you give me a reason not to. I am learning though, play nice and go along. If you start trying to decode something that’s NOT there, that’s detrimental and if you try and decode stuff that’s is there, you’ll only cause folks to hide deeper. But really, in love should all of these nasty elements be present? No. That’s why it’s called a game….to most.
Real love don’t have those nasty elements present.

So, “game them before they game you” is dude’s motto? That’s wack. If you’re out for something real, at some point you have to expose yourself. The risk of exposing yourself is that you’re subject to getting played. No risk, no reward. Now, I don’t knock anyone for being cautious. Our approach to the new situation is often determined by our experiences with past ones. That makes some more cautious than others. That’s your journey, and you have to move at your pace. Just find someone who has the same pace.

@Leggs: Most of them I knew…at least on some level. But like Steven Covey said, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” I thought if I understood the motivation behind the behavior better, I could transform my anger and frustration into compassion. Because really, bullying is pathetic and the people who exhibit bullying behavior are to be pitied.

ITL – in general I’d have to answer respect but I also recognize that fear most definitely has its place. sometimes folks will ignore respect for a little while figuring they can make it up to you later. fear seems to have a stronger hold on some folks.

in defense of fear over respect. I have to admit that I did wrong countless times where respect wasn’t enough to keep me from doing wrong. I also admit that I resisted wrong plenty of times more out of fear of consequences and repercussions than respect. like I said, if you have a momentary lapse with respect you can make it up later. lol

what kind of animal? definitely nothing warm and cuddly. wouldn’t go so far as to pick something cold and reptilian either. happy medium. panther (first thought was cougar but I’m not going out like that). Ex~ I am but I have not been in court this week. In the field of law that I’m in, most cases don’t actually go to trial. They end up being negotiated pleas. So there isn’t really a win/loss category for me. DUI/drug law is more like playing chess than actually litigating. I can do it if I have to but most of the time it is not required. And I’m a lot of things, but sloppy is never one. Glad you’re concerned for my career and safety!

this afternoon (which is a good ting since I’m exhausted!) Contrary to popular belief, the majority of my clients are not alcoholics. Those are just the ones that are fun to talk about as case studies. Mostly it’s moms and college kids who are absolutely mortified that the find themselves in this predicament. If you have one drink in GA and you get stopped for “probable cause” you are DUI. I actually defended a neighbor about 2 years ago who is not really a drinker at all. She went out to dinner and had 2 beers and was less than 3 miles from home. She got pulled over for a burnt out tail light. Officer smeller alcohol on her breath and gave her the breathalyzer. She blew a .09. DUI, here she comes.

These so called terms find ways to almost divide indirectly when they are really used as a sensitivity meaning. The American Athlete who held up a Mexican Flag when he won a medal wasn’t being called a Mexican/American, but that to me was unjust as he felt to be representing Mexico with USA on his jersey

ATL~ It would depend on how the term was used. If you are describing his nationality, that’s one thing. But if you are talking about how Gabby Douglas is the first African American woman to win the Women’s Individual All Around competition, then it is the correct term.

Lets look at History, it wasn’t kind to Africans no doubt. Slavery sucks … but what about the Japanese that were detained for years out West or the Irish for terrible treatment during the industrial revolution, or the Indians that were ran off their land? American History has some terrible moments, no doubt, but when does that ever transgress? Is it fair to say that the generation today is not the same as the generation in the past?

I’m not racial in the least bit and maybe its my upbringing or whatever, but to me always being focused in the past doesn’t allow the next generation to move forward cohesively. Should always remember what happened and acknowlege the injustices to make sure that never happens again and educate to be a more complete society. The Germans had to move on from Nazi way, there comes a point where people must look forward to a better future for themselves or their people cause living in history will only set the distinction between people, in my opinion

Comon can I jump in, something that upset me during the Olympics was Dominique Dawes describing her gymnastic team and the mufti-cultural , She said “we had a African american, an Asian american, a Romanian american and some Americans, that just didn’t go over that well with me. ATL~ Again, as I said, finding out that you are of European descent clarifys what we consider antagonistic for me. Aain, I think it is a cultural difference. I have spent my fair share of time overseas and the methods and tones of communication are very different from Americans.

I just happen to see the link to this blog and want to add I am appalled at the comments of this ATL Guy person. America is in the toilet when forums such as this exists. Places like this are great for discussions, but also create opportunities for seedy individuals to hide and express prejudices. In many cases, these same individuals lack the bravery to speak openly among ethnic peers. In many cases, they enjoy the nectar and splendor of our daughters, our women. If there’s a harbored race issue in one aspect, shouldn’t there be a prejudices in every aspect? I can assure you not. This ATL Guy person is clearly the hiding coward many of us know exists. As men, it is our duty to protect the human race from such idiosyncrasies, stamping out until removed.
