Right personality for marriage?

I was having brunch with my brunch chicas this weekend when the topic of marriage came up. I jokingly commented that having a husband that lived in the house across the street or next door sounds perfect!

I think a lot of single people who have not been married before have this fear (unhealthy?) of what life would be like living with someone else. Especially when you actually love living alone, in your space, doing secret single person behavior things all alone.

I wonder if it takes a certain type of personality to adapt to marriage and make those adjustments to living with a mate? Maybe some people find it easier than others.

Do you think some people just have the ideal personality to be married?
How can you know if you are that type? How can you tell if you have what it takes to be someone’s spouse?

BF~ Negative, ghostrider. That is the one with Sean Astin about the kid that went out for the Notre Dame football team even though he was small for his size. Win one for te Gipper comes from the movie “Knute Rockne, All American” in which Ronald Regan played the lead role and also later used as his slogan in the Presidental campaign.

Willied – I think that’s endearing. Grannies ALWAYS know some thangs. She won’t lead or steer you wrong. A quilt and a cast iron skillet from granny probably carries more value than money.

C – that’s because some of the grandma’s used to be them. lol. that’s not a jab at anyone’s grandma. I know I used to love to spend time with my grandmother’s older sister. growing up she was like a God to us. she was the only person who could “check” grandma and I, for one, loved to witness it. I used to love it when she’d tell my grandma to hush up. I also loved to hear stories of grandma doing something “ungrandma-like”.

My wife and kids tease me about that quilt. They call me linus (like Charlie brown) cause I won’t let anyone touch it. Only time I use it when me and Wifey lay out on a pallet in front of the fireplace.

WillieD – That’s how my mom was/is to my nephews. She didn’t use pissy tailed, her favorite was strumpet. Brother, did she use strumpet. Especially when both nephews grew old enough to wanna dabble a bit in tail….lol

Actually, there were 3 nephews she raised. One is 20 and still lives with her/his mom. Boy is she all up in his koolaid. He’s got a really cute gf and we have to make her “get out of the way” so to speak…sometimes. The little girl is really sweet, nice and “understanding” of granny.

C – my grandmother got in her share of lecturing. she’d always be talking about how “young folks these days just shack up and have babies. they act like marriage is going out of style”. to this day we joke whenever someone gets married that they are “styling”.

disco – I have to say my mom rather than grandma because she passed before I was born. The stories though from my mama and her “young folks” stuff is funny. The “big” stuff from way back when would be (just one), when she removed her “girdle” in the back seat of a boys car and he dropped off at the house….lol That was “fast” for those times. Or when she was sneaking off from Spelman and went to NY and how about ran into pops (hers) while up there.

Yeah, they got stories for days and there are reasons why.

On topic, the purpose of marriage is to be a family, even if you don’t have kids. If you’d rather preserve your time alone, i.e., actually prefer a single lifestyle, then it’s self-evident that you are not marriage material.

Back from lunch and catching up.

@WD: a pallet….man, I used to love to have “spend the night” company and mama would make us a pallet in the living room. :)

LOVE that granny wisdom. When we were talking the other day about sayings out mom/grandmoms use, I thought about my granny’s famous, “If you don’t listen, you have to feel” comment. She’s right, too. I could take her good advice, or let my hard-headed self learn the hard way.

young folks these days just shack up and have babies

Reminds me of a friend’s grandma who referred to it as “stacking up” instead of shacking up. “Baby, I rented the carriage house to that young couple even though they’re not married….they’re just stacking up!” said in a whisper, of course, so as not to offend our delicate southern sensibilities. ;)

Its funny as I look back. My Dad, grandad, uncles were all either true blue pimps or players. My moms was hard knocks with me and my bro probably cause she hated seeing my dad in us. My grandma was practical and loving. Honestly I have all that in me and time to time they all either come out or are just under the surface. As much as I try to change irt my son is prolly more like my Dad. The force is strong in that kid. He’s either gon be Luke or Darth no in between.

“women ain’t good for nothing but two things….the kitchen and the bedroom”

In 2000 during my divorce proceedings from my 1st wife she told the judge – ” he ain’t good for nothing but two things….the kitchen and the bedroom”. My attorney rested my case based on her testimony. The judge who was a female told her to think about what she was doing. A good Man is hard to find.

Willie – Concerning your grandmama seeing to it you knew how to take care of yourself like iron, cook, etc – that was my mother all the way with my brothers! She used to tell them all the time they may not meet anyone that would do things she did to keep up a home so they better know how to take care of themselves. With me it was a given she was going to teach me those things, but she made a special point of it with them. I remember seeing Michael Jordan on 60 Minutes when he was just hitting the scene. They showed him in his apartment vacuuming and asked him why he was doing that. He said he didn’t get any dates in high school and figured he may end up single, so his mom made sure she taught him homemaking skills!
