Right personality for marriage?

I was having brunch with my brunch chicas this weekend when the topic of marriage came up. I jokingly commented that having a husband that lived in the house across the street or next door sounds perfect!

I think a lot of single people who have not been married before have this fear (unhealthy?) of what life would be like living with someone else. Especially when you actually love living alone, in your space, doing secret single person behavior things all alone.

I wonder if it takes a certain type of personality to adapt to marriage and make those adjustments to living with a mate? Maybe some people find it easier than others.

Do you think some people just have the ideal personality to be married?
How can you know if you are that type? How can you tell if you have what it takes to be someone’s spouse?

I get whooped up by them a lot because I change women too often.

 Who are you, and what have you done with my BBB???

That’s twice now the wool has slipped a little and I’ve seen your wolf ears poking out, BF.

Single and Happy – See, that’s where you’re wrong and didn’t read in between the lines…lol I will cook for him. But seeing I’m not shacking or cohabitating, that’s on occasion. To feed myself and kid, I’m not doing a lot of cooking.

I do not like to cook, but will if I have to. I’ve been blessed to have men who like to cook! I called my mom laughing because I realized that I now have 7 boxes of cereal in my house…that’s how you can tell that I’m single! LOL

Cooking dont/wont is a compatibility issue. Most women that don’t will cook when they have a SO. Some women won’t. If that’s the case and you want home cooked meals then you better choose someone that will. I love to cook and Lord knows I didn’t choose my Wife for her cooking. Hahaha

I’m curious. ladies – (and guys too I suppose) – what is your “gotcha” meal? I joke that my chicken and dumplings with cornbread will have you snoring in less than 30 minutes. it’s always funny to watch folks get their grub on and then go to nodding. a time or two a guy has missed the game because he fell asleep. waking up asking me why I didn’t wake him up. lol.

“…at some point a sister will get a pet” – I know this for sure, if I didn’t have a child and lived alone, no pet would keep me company. Never been a pet person. So, in that regard, I won’t be one of the stats for Stanley Q’s thesis on single women and cats!

When I do cook a real meal, it always tastes good. I guess I just don’t like to cook for myself and then I get lucky and find men who want to cook for me!

Morning Gang! Hey Pops, what’s shakin? Ready for dem twins?LOL!!

I do agree there are certain people that seem to take to marriage more easily than others. I think it’s a combo of things. Some meet their soul mate early and marry early, so even if the marriage ends, they have gotten used to the lifestyle. Others, like me, married later. It did take some getting used to, living with another person, which I had not done since leaving my parents home after college. I never had any roommates after college and never shacked with a dude.

What made my transition easier was 2 things – choosing the right man and having a compromising attitude with that man and the situation. In getting to know him I saw that he was someone I could see myself living with without going thru alot of changes. He had great personal hygiene habits and while somewhat of a packrat, kept his home fairly neat considering he had young kids. He’s not clingy so he doesn’t need to be all on top of me all the time. We love to spend time with each other, yet we both have our own interests. Like CC said, which I love, we ENRICH our already full lives.

If my husband had been any other way, clingy and always keeping tabs on me, didn’t have his own interests/hobbies or friends, poor personal hygiene/nasty – we would not be married today, you can take that to the bank.

Pets – never been an animal lover at all. Now THAT was something I had to get used to cause he has 2 cats. They are cute and low maintenance so that helps!LOL!! We have fish too – he takes care of the aquarium and he cleans up the litter box. All good for me!LOL!

Those that feel the need to quote divorce stats all the time as an excuse for not wanting to commit to marriage – bull! What do other folks failures have to do with you?

I was never one that dreamed about weddings. Maybe that has to do with how I was brought up. But I hate to hear people put down women that are excited about their wedding and think that’s all they care about. The wedding is one day. If a woman really is all about the wedding and not the actual marriage, the man should have seen the shallowness when they dated. They both are still to blame for the failure should they divorce.

Disco, I feel you on those hungry a** men, was over one of my friends house and she was cooking dinner for us like she was cooking for an army I asked her who else was coming to dinner, she said all the men she knew could eat, so she assumed I did too (LOL)

My gotcha would be any kind of beef with REAL mash potatoes, nothing out of a box.

Even though I love to cook and can throw down, it’s never “gotten” me a man. I guess dudes don’t care about that as much as they did in the past, at least those I came across. My husband appreciates my cooking, but it would not have been a dealbreaker. I’ve seen dudes claim they want a woman that cooks marry chicks that can’t boil water.

Cosign that 11:05 a.m.

My wife is an excellent cook, but I do the majority of the daily meals.

Even though she can throw down, I did not marry Mrs. PG for her CULINARY skills.

I guess for some people that cooking is a deal breaker.

I was a bachelor for many years and I had to eat. I needed to eat healthy b/c of my job. Therefore, eating out alot was really an option. My grandma taught me how to cook, iron, etc. My mom taught me how to sew. My dad & I worked on automobiles and yardwork and gardening. I had life skills and the people who raised me made sure that I wasn’t dependent on any female. They all wanted me to stand on my own two. That is what parents/elders are supposed to do. They did a great job. I didn’t like it all the time. I remember pouting a time or two because I wanted to hang with my boys and go scoping for Tooties. (I was a huge Kim Fields fan growing up. I wanted a girl like Tootie.)

Yeah, I am old as dirt….so what?!
