Dating dilemma: Nobody likes your mate

My new beau (I know, I’m shocked too) has invited me to attend a wedding that will have loads of his relatives. I’m not all that worried because I’m something like a Mom Whisperer. Mothers love me with their sons, what can I say? It’s a blessing and a curse.

I thought about the men (uhh the one guy) that my parents met and how awful I felt when things didn’t go that well. Dad thought he looked like an inmate because he had a scar on his face. My Father, the comedian still jokingly asks me “What ever happened to Scarface?

I digress. The point is, it can be problematic when your new relationship is tested by disapproval of family or friends. If you are from a close knit family, you are forced to become a mediator. You feel stuck in the middle and you never want to choose between the two. The question is, should you have to?

What happens when nobody likes your mate? How do you handle it when everyone around you has negative things to say about your relationship?

Should you take heed and pay attention? Do you think what they say is true, “Love is blind” and you have to listen to the opinions of others?

Have you ever dated someone that caused a serious challenge in your other relationships?

I understand the snobbish side of Robert, however, you should remove your hat when walking into someone’s house.

sassy – my son broke out his corduroy jacket with leather patches when we went home to visit once. my brother and cousins were clowning him big time. he was in high school at the time but that was how he liked to dress. my family accused me of turning him into a “carlton”. lol. of course, those particular cousins think they are dressed up when their sneakers match their jersey so you know their opinions don’t mean jack.

gentleman thing or not it’s apparent robert had already judged dude. I don’t think removing the hat wouldn’t have made much difference.

Cosign..I understand that men should remove their hats upon entering any home that’s not theirs but it sounded as though he got profiled for his attire…

I agree it probably wouldn’t have made a difference…his first strike was 15 years older than his daughter. Of course it’s downhill from there.

Maybe its a pecking order thing. Robert can ask dude to leave but at the end of the night cue the music Boom chicka wow wow. Even older dudes have to know there place. It may not have been a sign of disrespect, maybe dude just forgot to take off his hat. You go all Winston Churchill on the dude and then he goes John holmes on your baby girl.then you come on here talking bout capa and bamas. Maybe lil mama don’t wantr tea and cucumber sandwiches. Maybe she wants 8 tracks and 6 packs. IJS

and somehow all of this is dude’s fault. lol. just earlier we were talking about the daughter’s role in these shenanigans. sounds like the daughter tossed dude under the bus. seems like if she was really into him she would have had one of those “let me tell you about my daddy” talks. she may have been using dude to get at daddy for something else. just me and my “conspiracy theories”.

Yeah, of course he had on the “thug” uniform! LOL!!!

Robert – do you think your daughter was trying to get a rise out of you? I mean think about it. You’ve come on here several times talking about your disdain for sneaks, jeans & baseball caps. Surely your daughter knows your stance on this. The fact that she would bring dude to the house dressed like that & he’s much older to boot lets me think she’s trying to be a rebel.

I mean, I spoke earlier of my family & how they rolled I brought dates around. No, they did not like all of them, but it was never because they were not presentable. I never would have darkened my parents door with some thugged out dude, real or wannabe! I’m not crazy!LOL!!

Yeah disco…she should’ve given him the daddy disclaimer. I do it when I take a man to meet my mom…I’m like, “Look once you meet my mom you’ll see where I get it from”, and all goes well. She’s cool but if you get out of your lane she’s got that “act right” to help straighten you out..

Robert’s daughter is an adult and she needs to date the person she’s happy with. Most times it’s not going to be what you would prefer but if she’s an adult and old enough to make her own decisions as well as deal with her own consequences, sometimes you gotta let ‘em ride it out. He could very well see something she couldn’t or can’t still and even so it’s her life and her decisions to make. He’s not going to able to police her selection in mates nor beat folks up because he’s not pleased. Again she’s the one to decide AND LIVE WITH IT. He can advise and be there but he shouldn’t interfer. Usually being like that tend to make things go further left anyway.

As long as it’s not blatant disrespect and abuse then he should let it be and talk to her about it later. But greasing up and about to brawl won’t do anything but make things worse.
