Dating dilemma: Is their/your job too sexy?

I was bypassing the TV One network and spotted a show called Love Addiction. This particular episode featured Dr. Tartt, who has guest blogged on our MIA blog before, talking to a couple in distress. I am not sure where the addiction came in, but the woman was dating a guy who is paid to rub on dangerously naked women all day.

I started to wonder which jobs, careers brought a slew of potential dangers if you were in a relationship. Obviously a massage therapist has to look at women all day as they moan in pleasure (if he’s doing it right!), is pretty close to most sexiest jobs. What about an OB/GYN? Or a bartender?

Do you think that certain jobs or careers would require a super secure, totally understanding partner, for things to work?

I can not imagine having to constantly explain about “clients” to a significant other. Then again, what is it really like having to deal with your mate, basically flirting and turning on charm for a living?

What do you think? Would it bother you if you were dating someone in an industry that involved hot bodies and flirting? Are you in that kind of career now? Has it caused dating problems for you? If so, how did you handle it?

Exiled – You sound like the beau in reference to Flight attendants…why do they get such a bad rep?

FYI – I do not consider an OB/GYN to be a sexy type of job. True they get to feel on boobs and cooters all day but there’s way more chicks coming in for problems than there are just coming in for regular check ups. I know a guy that was one for a brief period of time and he told me more than his fair share of horror stories. SUMMIN STANK!

In addition, I don’t necessarily see being a massage therapist as a real sexy job either…everyone that comes in there is not a dime piece with beautifully smooth skin. You’ll get the less attractive types with back acne, boil booties or what have you.

I have never dated anyone that had what you would consider a ’sexy job’ so I don’t have much to add to the topic. However, one of those Love Addiction episode had a guy that was a Club Promoter and of course he did major flirting and was constantly out in the club. I would NOT want to date a guy who was always in a freaking club. My ex wasn’t a club promoter but he was definitely a frequent flyer when it came to going out. Its just not my thing.

I had to learn to adjust to seeing my musician ex flirting while on stage. There were times that it was really tough in the beginning, but I was able to let it go because he was doing that for the performance and tips. As long as he left it on the stage, I was ok. Being a musician isn’t necessarily a “sexy” job, but there are a lot of groupies out there who will sleep with a musician no matter what he/she looks like!!!

@ Disco- had to lol at your clown remark!

My ex spouse had a job that is not considered sexy, but perilous nevertheless. As a therapist, he listened to females complain about their mates and told them what their mate was doing wrong. Quite naturally, some women fantasize about their therapist, believing that he is the perfect man, understands them, etc. I explained to my ex how important it was to have CLEAR boundaries, which would include distinct office hours, no house calls, etc. I consider myself secure and understanding but was labeled a jealous nag for advising him about boundaries more than once.
Long story short- he ignored my concerns, he now has children by one of said patients, and I have securely moved on! It does take a secure and understanding partner to deal with certain jobs, but first and foremost it takes an ethical and responsible professional.

Tell me about it…a stepdad of someone I know, used to sing back in the day and he has like 8+ kids all by different women. Those chicks were trying to put their stamp on any potential success. lol I wonder how many chicks try to throw their panties in a crowd to the Presidents (not just the current but any in the past) I’m wondering though, what the whole attraction is of entertainers, athletes and other politcal men…I suppose just the spotlight? Or maybe it’s because they say women fall in love between their ears first so men in the spotlight of course have to do a lot of bs’ing to maintain their status…entertainers singing & dancing, politcal members making up stuff about what they are going to do blah blah blah

I don’t get the “groupie” mentality…unless maybe it’s an already very successful band. I think the reason I like musicians so much is because music is my passion. I don’t sing or play, but I love the music industry and seeing live music is my favorite thing to do. I think I admire them for their talent and wish I had it. Also, since I love to go to shows, I’m more likely to be around musicians.

It’s a habit I have to break, though! :-)

Bluz – I wouldn’t go so far to say you should break your habit of loving music and most of what comes with it because it’s a passion of yours. However, what you have to do is just be more careful, with eyes wide open and cognizant of who you’re dealing with no matter what their profession is. Take your time… ;-)

It’s not the performing part, but the constant travel (if a musician is actually making a living at it), and incumbent abundant availability and opportunity that puts musicians in a position to get lots of strange. Most guys don’t go for it. They’re preoccupied with missing their families.

Your take on what a musicians life is like is a bit naive, Bluz. But, chances are, you really don’t want to hang with musicians, unless you like bad ones (that don’t work and thus little travel) or unless you don’t mind them being mostly absent.

leggs – since you brought up Lewinsky here’s a quick off topic. I recently finished reading the central park five. y’all remember that? when the teens were arrested/convicted of raping the jogger in central park? anyway, in the book it details that the jogger had semen on her pants that belonged to her boyfriend. no big deal. what’s trifling is that she testified that she had sex with her boyfriend the week prior and put those pants on before running. translation: she sexed, didn’t shower, dressed, jogged, a week goes by and she puts those same unwashed pants back on again.

Morning All!!

Some folks are so insecure they couldn’t deal with their mate working ANYWHERE where they come in contact with other people. A customer service rep or a bank teller would make them antsy!

A doctor is a chick-magnet period, no matter what kind! Don’t have to be a GYN. He could be a podiatrist and look at crusty feet all day! He’s got MD next to his name, so that spells power & money! And unless he’s a sleaze that doesn’t care about getting sued for malpractice, I wouldn’t be concerned about him being a GYN. Not a “glam” job AT ALL!!

As for execs & politicians & such, it’s the power/money that suit attracts. Power & wealth are sexy, no doubt about it.

Jobs like dancers and hair stylists and massage therapist would not concern me in the least. A lot of those men in those jobs bat for the other team anyway. I would never be attracted to any of those types if they were straight anyway. The straight ones, like straight athletes, strike me as being garden tools and dumb. I like intelligence.

Slim – I read an article/book about the 2008 election. Michelle said that the Prez constantly complained about women touching him inappropriately when he would be in crowds shaking hands! They throw themselves at him constantly. He’s a nice-looking man, better looking than most of those past old men that were President, so it comes with the territory. We all know of Clinton & Kennedy’s escapades. They couldn’t turn the groupies down!

Blues Player == out of work, chances are untrained and unable to play in other genres and idioms. I like the blues as much as anyone, but if that’s ALL they can play, they’re pretty marginal players. Unless they’re BB or someone like that, who invented the idiom as it currently exists.

Professional musicians that can make a living at it trained in a conservatory or school of music, and can fit into ANY scenario. Important to note that singers are not musicians – I saw a headline yesterday, ‘most powerful musicians’, and was amused that it listed pop stars by income and twitter followers: Jusin Bieber, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Katy Perry. Not a musician in the group.

Agree on Prince. Composer, producer, guitar player, important influence on pop music all through the 80’s. Kind of funny looking though — old Boy George quote about how Prince “looks like a dwarf rolled in a vat of pubic hair” is the best contribution to pop lexicon that George ever had!

GOOD Thursday Morning MIA!!! :-)

I haven’t had any issues with a job that former bf’s have had. Now I work in a male dominated field (Military Maintenance) & some guys have had issues with me constantly getting approached. A secure person is secure, and an insecure person is the same.

No matter what field your SO works in, how they dress when they go to the store, or even how they carry themselves – an insecure person is going to have problems regardless.

my avoidance of some professions isn’t so much because of the “sex appeal” of the job so much as I just don’t “respect” the work. granted I respect the work that people do in general and appreciate that they work but I won’t front. I don’t want to be that chick introducing my man talking about he’s the guy that inserts the little dials on the bottom of deodorant containers.

Slim – jeans? Maybe. Workout gear? Not so much. Work out gear that you know you wore right after doing the do? She knew she needed to wash. (or were you even talking about the jogger?)

disco – I was speaking in general but you’re right with regards to workout gear. Those definitely need to be washed after working out in them.

As far as the topic goes, the place I work is pretty much male dominated and I get approached, propositioned, and also on the receiving end of inappropriate comments. Yesterday I was actually surprised by the nice comments and/or compliments from some of the guys…I thought I was going to make it through Wednesday unscathed until some dude comes with his off key comments about how I looked in my jeans when he saw me walking in the parking lot the previous day. Can you say CREEPER.

fyi: I work with mainly car dealers and I would not want to date one. They aren’t considered to hold a ’sexy position’ but I just don’t find too many to be trustworthy
