Dating dilemma: Age gap

When you date much older or much younger people, you have probably had to navigate the age gap. Whenever it becomes painfully obvious that you two are from totally different generations, or have polar opposite outlooks on life. How do you hand the difference in age?

A lot of it has to do with maturity and communication. You find a way to work out the differences by acknowledging them first. It’s not helpful to overlook the pink elephant in the room.

A friend of mine is dating someone a lot younger than he is. Still, he is somewhat surprised how she handles certain situations. I feel as if he should understand that it comes with the territory of dating younger. I encourage him to cut her some slack and remind him how he was clueless at her age too.

Do you ever wonder if dating someone who is much older or much younger is worth all the adjustments that you have to make?

They way I see it, every relationship will have it’s own unique set of challenges. If dealing with the difference in age is the toughest part of the relationship, then that’s not all that bad. Then again, I haven’t dated (many?) 20 year olds in a while either.

What age ranges do you think are most compatible to you? Do you think age matters at all?

How young would you date? How old?

I’m 50 and my on again off again girlfriend is 28, and lives in another country, so we have not only the age gap, but the cultural difference. The way I handle the age gap is the same way I would if we were the same age, we talk about things. You have to remember they are not your child so don’t treat them like one! I have a friend who’s in the same situation, but to hear him talk to his wife, you would think he was talking to one of his children. It doesn’t matter if there is an age difference are not, you are going to have to make adjustments in a relationship.

I’ve never chased hardbodies, nor have I “dated” women much older women (well, “dated” wouldn’t be the proper term for an involvement I may or may not have had).

My only comment is that when I got back in to the dating pool in my 40’s, the number of available, beautiful, intelligent, and just plain wonderful women in that age group were astounding because so many guys getting a divorce wanted to chase the younger women. Hey, it works for me, knock youself out dudes, I’m delighted to entertain your throwaways, while you chase the hardbodies. Call me weird, but I actually enjoy intelligent conversation with an educated woman before and after the…

I see having an age gap between boy and girl is more to do with geographic area. The south when I drive down there around the back roads I see a middle age man with old jeans, raggedy shirt, unshaved come into the diner with a purty girl straight out of one of those old classic tales about the rural areas.
It has a lot to do with the long hot summer and steamy nights.
I read a little while ago that the widow of a confederate soldier just passed away. Now, you know, there had to be quite an age difference.
It really is a southern thing. You just have to like those plain unassuming plain spoken folks.

I’ve dated women 10 years younger, I don’t think I’d like younger than that. Partners are best suited if they experience life together from pretty much the same perspective. I’ve dated women 8 years older, the age difference wasn’t noticeable.

Morning,

Dating and age differences is the topic I see. I have to be honest, most of the men I’ve dated has been about 3 – 5 years…..YOUNGER! Sorry but it’s true. That’s the group that approaches and for where I am in life, it’s all good. I’ve found the experience, perspectives, outlook are all pretty much mirrored and not far removed. I’ve had a couple of men 10 years my junior that were interested. In all honesty I cannot do that big of an age gap. Nothing wrong with the men but for that big of a gap perspectives and outlook differs vastly and outweighs…for me…the ability to mesh. For where I am now, I’m not impressed with that age group because a bunch of big words, the school you attended or just how logical you are and the effort behind your moves and steps in life ain’t my thing. I’m past that now. Don’t get me wrong smarts, intellect, insight are always needed but there’s a certain stretch on this highway where they’ve all become automatic and second nature. Nothing intentional for me about the steps and strides of life at this point. It’s sort of like being well on your way whereas for someone younger you’re just started out and there’s a level of caution and intention in setting the path in the right direction….I’M PAST THAT POINT….is where I’m going. So in essence, my age a couple of years younger or older. I’m not going to veer to far beyond my age in either direction.

I’ve always been attracted to older men. I cannot stand men my age or younger. I’ve always had older friends also and many people tell me I have an old soul. My recent ex was 13 years older than me and my ex before that was 21 years older than me. I’m now 32 and don’t want to date anyone too much older…I’m thinking about 40 is my limit now! :-)

The only age gap issues we had were when they would talk about things that were before my time. LOL! Other than that, it wasn’t that much of an issue.

Morning All!!

I’ve only dated guys around my age, about 4 years younger/older is my limit. I dated one 10 years older and could not take it. Like Leggs said, everything about him was old and he was only late 40s at the time. Whatever age I am, I have a young spirit but at times an old soul, if that makes sense. Either way, I like being with someone with the same perspective/life experiences. When I was in high school/college, alot of my friends liked older dudes. I didn’t. I figured a mature dude wanted “mature” things and I was happy being a kid! I recognized I was not ready for a “mature” relationship.

Celisea....still digging William Levy, my "crossover"

11:13 am

I do need to back up a bit, when I was 28 I dated a dude 38. I’ve talked about him on here too, a great guy but set in his ways. He was so dang grouchy all the time. I COULD NOT deal with that. We weren’t ever exclusive or a couple because of that. We dated a lot off and on and I NEVER had anything intimate with him because of that and because I knew I wasn’t the only one. He said I needed to “show” I was serious by taking that step and I said in order to take that step, he needed to show me something I didn’t already know. And that’s where it stood. This was the dude that lead with his wallet and became somewhat of a stalker after realizing he was out a lot of money.

Leggs

Randyt ~ I doubt you are immature. Like Celisea stated, I’m not interested in a “boy toy” just to get by. Main reason why your friend didn’t stand a chance. Some just wants the experience of an older woman and then move onto another. I’m not looking for sex…hell, that’s easy to get, a dime a dozen.

Like Gwen Guthrie said “nothing going on but the rent…no finance, no romance” meaning, no relationship no sex just for the hell of having sex. The body can do without (lolol). Hell, even that made me laugh.

kimmie – I like the settled-ness (did I make up a word) that comes with the old dude (if you get one that stays in his lane and not one out there trying to front like he’s still got it). the financial perks. in my experience, the old ones are quicker to come up off the money. those young boys still acting like they don’t have to pay for anything. old guys are quicker on the “do you need, do you want, what can I do for you”. it may sound gold digger-ish (did I make up another word) but it is what it is. some of my friends that clowned me about my old dude were in awe when he presented me with a credit card for personal use.

@ leggs…I tend to be playful and avoid being serious…in fact (and this drives some women crazy) ,when things or conversations start getting too deep, I will make a joke just to lighten things up. What I have noticed (especially working with engineers) is that you are as old or as young as you project by your demeanor. Some people for some reason seem old no matter what their age…some seem younger just because they act younger. Some people seem full of life, some seem devoid of life. I never understood that.

I can choose to be young, I can choose to be old. Short of the tombstone, it is mostly my (or your) choice.

As I have said before, one of the things I do well is the help with the cooking, slow dancing with a glass of wine in the kitchen as dinner simmers…and yes, for the record a lot of memorable events have occurred right there in the kitchen floor, table, etc. because my azz wasn’t parked on the couch snoozing or playing PS3.

I’ve always been more comfortable with someone I could grow with and was raised the way I was – he’s the gentleman, I’m the lady. Not so settled that they are “tired” before their time and have some spunk. Like looking for a needle in a haystack, I know, but I got what I wanted! Off topic: There’s a lady that transitioned to our group a few months back and really I’ve not had a good start with her. I don’t know the group she came from but obviously she was spoiled. I had to school her on how things work here. You do your own work around here. Well, because I’ve had to “set her straight” a ocuple of times, she ain’t feeling me. Cool, cause I’m not feeling her either. Anyway, she’s the chairperson for some culteral event their having in the building today and came by all nice (any other time she’s a stank heffa) and asked me to attend. All I have for her is bite me. There’s more than one way to skin a cat. I don’t play those kind of games. You want to be a heffa, then let the games begin. I don’t get into exchange of words with folks because most times you’re gonna trip your own self doing that. Calm, cool, unrattled and collected is my policy and motto in the workplace. I can show you better than I can tell you. When you “need” something, don’t look for Celisea cause she don’t patronize folks that’s got a problem with her. The event today is all sorts of food from her culture…she’s from another country. All I can say is I’m taking my debit card to the cafe and buying my lunch. Don’t look for me at your event. And it ain’t just me. Another one of my teammates reported her to my manager so she called and asked me about my experience with her. She’s lazy and thinks because of the money she’s making we’re enslaved to her….I DON’T THINK SO. Not me anyway.

I have always been attracted to men that were a little older than me, since i found most to be more mature, settled and their thinking leveled with mine. My soul is old, spirit is humbled and I’m well rounded so I want the same in return. I personally say if you got and old soul, young spirit, and fit body then I can work with that. Now with that said I can’t do the viagra popping, or wheelchair bound that just too for me, neither am I down for teaching some new-new how to hit the bullseye! No for the foolishness that can tip the scale both ways when it comes to age it’s not a primary factor. Too many other things to consider than age alone anyway.

“Do you think age matters at all?”

Yes, age does matter. All my blog buddies know how I feel. I hate to see a older man “Sugar Daddy” (40-50) dating a younger woman (20-30). I hate to see a older woman “Cougar” (40-50) dating a younger man (20-30). “Older Women” will give you the worms my Daddy would always tell me when I was growing up. lol

C – re workplace issues. I swear just this morning I was wondering if I could get away with whooping a co-worker’s A on the weekend. I don’t work weekends. It would be straight off company time and property. I wonder….

I remember as early as elementary school knowing that if you left school and crossed the street you couldn’t get in trouble for fighting. btw – when I say in trouble, I mean with the school. in my family a kid almost never got in trouble for fighting. fighting was strictly encouraged. heck, I got one whooping for not fighting when I was in the second grade. after that I made sure to fight.

leggs again – re your loophole – child it’s so so so funny that you said that. thankfully I don’t live where I have family. lol. don’t think I haven’t had family members volunteer to drive down and take care of some things for me. I had an issue with a male neighbor where I went off and finally cursed him out. I then went home for the family reunion and told the tale. i had a gang of cousins ready to drive down and handle that.

There are women nearly 60 that will put 20, 30, and 40 year olds in their place. Example (Dr. Ro)Rovenia Brock Phd. is 56 and look like she’s 32. Don’t take my word google her. @Brownsugarvixen – “I have always been attracted to men that were a little older than me, since i found most to be more mature, settled and their thinking leveled with mine. My soul is old, spirit is humbled and I’m well rounded so I want the same in return.”

As a mature older man my lifestyle would ruin you. Too much of a good thing is not good for you. Any young man who might like you and want to marry you never will because he won’t be able to meet your expectations (passion, desire, money, freedom of choice, etc.). My advice is to not take things for granted. Wait for Mr. Right and not settle for Mr. Old Man. Life is to short to make serious mistakes that can detroy you forever. No man wants a woman who thought she was all grown-up by dating older men. What did you learn?

Most people don’t get or understand “beauty.” It’s not some image of a pin-up or the mirror of some chick on a magazine. What’s put into those type women, the typical beauties? What I find and just IMO are the get up and go, those that age gracefully, those with little to no maintenance. Heck we all can be beautiful for the right price. I giggle at the folks that think beauty is on the cover of a magazine, Hawaiian Tropic gals. When you can go/do without make-up, ain’t gotta kill yourself, starve yourself to death, ain’t gotta buy add-ons and implant stuff. Having the confidence to go as you are and go okay in that department….that’s what I find beautiful. And really if it not resonating from within, then likely it won’t in the outer appearance.

Even now, when she’s in the hospital, it’s hard getting folks to talk to us about her because no one believes her condition is what it is. Well, after she’s repeated herself a gazillion times they figure it out but initially they have a problem in tell us (me and sibs) what’s needed and what we need to do because they think my mom (looks/speech) is 100%. @Robert — I don’t soley date older men to feel like a big girl, it’s just a preference based on my experience of dating men in my age bracket during my youth. My expectations may be a tad bit old fashioned but not unrealistic. I don’t wear the superficial mantra that boast Ms. Independent, or Ms. High Standards with unrealistic expectations. Matter of fact im anything but such. Passion, desire, money etc… never really fell short in those areas in the relationships that I have had. I’ve learned that people change, grow and find themselves and sometimes it leads to one or both parties departing ways for those reasons. As for Mr. Right our paths just haven’t crossed yet so the jury is still out on that one.

Everything in moderation. I know folks get sick of that, but it’s true. You still can enjoy good food and your favorite vices, in moderation. My body rejects junk after awhile if I eat too much of it, so it makes it easy for me. But every now and then, fries or a good juicy steak are called for! I absolutely love fruit and salads, so that makes it easy. I’ve been around alot of sickness and I know no matter how careful, I still may come down with something bad, but if I do, I can at least have a fighting chance to survive and lessen the suffering.

Plus, I just feel so good and light when I’m in good shape!

I don’t care about the price, I love some MAC and other high end cosmetics. I don’t even use alot of it, I just love the packaging and the glamour of it all! I can only use MAC or Clinique lipstick and powders. Anything with fragrance in it on my face will break me out. I can get by with cheaper eye products though. Won’t ever use false eyelashes though, can’t get with the glue on my eyes!

I needed something to make me feel “grown” at the time. here’s my commercial pitch… over the years none of the drug store stuff tickled my fancy but when I finally bought the mac something clicked. plus having the natural hair and the plain face might be a little much. Really, I don’t see anything wrong with paying a bit much for that one thing you do special for yourself…be it make-up, shoes, eating out…as long as it’s not with EVERYTHING. That’s wasting money. My weakness is shoes. Make-up? Not so much. I left Mac and have a nice brown CG…lol 4.99 and I like it :) I didn’t like any of the Mac colors. I was in there a loooong time with buddy. @Celisea ~ shoes are my weakness too. All the shelves in my closet fell down forcing me to clean out my closet. I gave a good 40+ pair of shoes to the local church’s shoe drive. Good shoes in good condition, but I knew I wouldn’t be wearing them anymore. Heck a few I even forgot I had. Still have over 60+ in my tub, my bathroom, my room. Purged some of my clothes as well. But, my closet is now neat and clean!

I know the check in my salon is probably curious why I’m always starring at her…lol Okay I’m a bit fixated. She’s sort of “thick” but she can pull it off. Tight jeans, see-thru shirts (everytime I’m there I can see it all), very very very short cut and lashes from her work station to the wall. I don’t think she’s the cutest thing in there nor the thinnest but for some reason she pulls it off. She’s a bit hoochie but I her style over some of the others. She’s is NOT ashamed or afraid to go for it. She pushes the envelope in every way. Maybe that’s why she can pull it off.

There are a lot of scary folk on POF because it’s free. That’s what made me go and pay for a subscription. Still jerks there too, but POF is swarming with them. There is 10 years age difference and me and my spouse. We met when I was 20 and he 30 yrs. I’m happy to say we have been married for 28 yrs. Two things I can share that helped our relationship was my maturity and our love for Jesus Christ. It hasn’t been easy but, its worked for us and im still happily married and in love with him more now than before.
