Being frugal sexy?

I was listening to the Frank and Wanda radio show on the way to work yesterday. They were talking about dating frugal people and someone said that using a coupon on a date was not sexy. Seriously! Being smart about money is a turn off?

How does using a coupon kill the romance on a date, though? If a guy whipped out a coupon, groupon, or even foursquare check-in discount, do you know how impressed I would be?

It’s like some women have this fantasy of being wooed by wealthy men, and a coupon kind of jolts them back to “practical reality” or something.

Have you ever used a coupon or discount deal on a date? If not, would you be opposed to it?

Would it bother you to date someone who is frugal?

That is a great question. I really like it. I take a coupon with me every time I have a date. I remember my friend taking me out for my birthday. When the check came she gave me a two-for-one coupon and said, “because it was my birthday, I only had to pay for one dinner”. She is the only girl I know who hangs her dental floss up to dry. She is very frugal, when we go to McDonalds she checks under the take out window for dropped change.

Someone who is not appropriately frugal is the type of person who will bankrupt you after marriage.

Good Morning MIA!!!!

We ate @ Harbour Seafood (this place rocks) last week and I happily used my DoubleTake Coupon and I have a groupon to Loca Luna and will purchase any coupon if it truly worth the money. I wouldn’t look sideways @ a man using a coupon at all. I will inquire what company he uses and compare notes. I love good deals and these deal can be used for traveling as well. Saving money is always sexy while having a quality time.

Being cheap though and whining about spending money on dates period is my turn off. Complaining 24/7 how women are just looking for a free meal and so on is unattractive. When dating spending money is apart of the equation and it doesn’t have to be the most expensive either but at some point money will be spent. I’ve never had a problem paying for an outing regardless if I had a coupon or not. And when I go out I always order what I can afford so either way I can handle the bill with my date does or not[……….and that is just common courtesy not to order the most expensive meal. how awkward is that. If the rapport is established and its that type of date then by all means splurge but just a date naw I stay in my lane humbly…….greedy isn’t cute

Good morning,

I don’t see anything wrong with being smart about finances, whether that means using a coupon/groupon/meal deal or whatever on date #1 or date #25,987,656,554. If i’m not paying, who am I to judge them for trying to get a discount. Going out to eat, or for entertainment purposes adds up fast. So for someone to curl their lip up at the sight of ones use of a coupon is simply idiotic to me. Why pay full price if you don’t have to?

If he uses a coupon of any kind, I’ll be watching to see that he tips on the FULL-price amount. If he doesn’t, I’ll sneak some extra cash on the table if I can. Few things turn me off quicker than a man who does not adequately compensate our server.

I heard part of the discussion on Frank & Wanda the other morning. Like most of you, Im okay with a guy using a coupon on a date. Most people nowadays are trying (or should be trying) to be mindful of their spending. Plus if its something I would do for myself (which I would), why be in a pinch if a date does it as well. Like Lady said, I may compare notes!

Lady – “And when I go out I always order what I can afford so either way I can handle the bill with my date does or not”….AMEN! I do the same thing!!

Good morning.

Diva, I heard the conversation and thought of the blog and how we’ve discussed this. I am still comfortable with a guy using a coupon on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd date. I would not take it that he doesn’t want to spend money on me, but rather why not take advantage of the coupon (especially if it’s about to expire). Sure, it could be he may not deem me worthy right then to spend the $$, but it’s not all that important at that moment. He deemed me interesting enough to take me out. Go with the flow, enjoy the company, not the amount of $$ spent.

I use groupon all the time. Lots of times, as I pull in to a restaurant, I’ll check for discounts. Other times, I let those discounts help me choose where to eat. I’ve had more arguments about where to eat and coupons (whatever type) help make the argument end on good sense. I am financially independent, when women see me saving, I think they attribute it to my own savvy fiscal sense – it’s never construed as a negative.

I think it’s important to be a good steward of wealth, bestowed upon us as a blessing from God. Coupons? Sure! I don’t really actively collect them, but if it’s there, it’s there. If it’s a restaurant coupon, the server gets that much larger tip; if it’s a haircut or something, likewise. Is it sexy or not? Kind of a disconnect there. Chicks might respond sexually to stuff like that, but for guys, coupons do not equal big teeotts.

Hello Lady~

I eat out so much that it would irresponsible of me not to use a coupon. I spend at least 50K a year on dining. I have got that to be discounted by at least 25%. I buy gift cards when the restaurant groups have their deals – I usually get $1 for $2.

Row 125, seat 11B, if a girl clowns you for saving money – it’s most likely what you did up to the point to of using a coupon – otherwise she’s a ‘biotch’ and not worth the time.

I should of stated that that 50K a year does include wine, bubbles and dinner cocktails.

However, going out to bars and having drinks is not included on the aforementioned part of my entertainment.

I appreciate a woman who wants me to save some money. it just speaks highly of her character and personality. It lets me know that she understands the value of money and she will most likely stand by my side when things go rough or most likely help manage our finances and make sure we dont go broke.

Row — I agree that most girls will probably clown u if u use a coupon but who cares its my money. if the girl has a problem with it, why dont she tell the waiter she wants to be a fool and pay the full price for the meal. ( Probably the last time she would ever hear from me again)

Nothing wrong with holding on to a dime or two but a dude using coupons in the name of “saving money” won’t exactly impress. But not for the reasons though some may think. So hold you’re “calling BS” until I’m done.

If it’s totally about saving, then I think in terms of not eating out at all or having shoes repaired rather than buying new ones. Especially if they still have a bit of wear left. …just to name a couple of examples. I think of being able to get creative with meals at home, with a nice ambiance in the backdrop. I think of keeping with only getting the things one needs rather than getting things you don’t…on sale or at a discounted price. If saving is your plight or journey, your SO would totally understand but coupons ain’t exactly the path I deem “the route to save.”

So you see, I’m personally not impressed with saving a buck or two by way of groupon or coupons because really if you can do without…all the way, you aren’t REALLY saving?

And frankly Frugal is not a bad word if being frugal you are. If it’s the miser thing going on then umm yeah that’s cheesy. I’m not trying to be the contrarian here but coupons aren’t exactly what I consider the best path to saving up a million.

I wouldn’t be mad though if a dude used, I just wouldn’t see it as him “saving”

Morning All!

What is unattractive is, like Lady said, guys that whine about spending money on a date and are cheap and moan about women wanting a free meal. Dudes want free & easy booty too – don’t hear em whining about that!LOL!! If you can’t afford to date, don’t, pure and simple.

A financially responsible dude is sexy, pure and simple. I’ve seen dudes that barely pull an average salary able to manage their money and stretch a dollar better than some dudes making six figures.

The main thing with this particular topic, I feel, is FINESE! Just because you are frugal it doesn’t mean you make everyone around you uncomfortable and feel deprived or unworthy. Be smooth about it. If a coupon allows you to take your date to Bones for the same price you would pay at Applebees, what’s the issue? If when we walked into the restaurant and the 1st thing you announce to the waitstaff is “hey, I’ve got a coupon, is that okay?” that’s not smooth. The smooth thing to do would be to call ahead when you make reservations and ask about the coupon. Then when the bill comes, you slip it in along with payment and let the waiter know you cleared it earlier when you made the reservation. No need to make a major issue out of it. You would not make an issue of the bill if you didn’t have a coupon, right? I don’t make an issue out of coupons when I use them at any establishment!! Coupons, gift cards, what’s the big deal?

There is a classy way to do anything!!!

Make me a meal at home and sit me down and romance me….in the name of saving. Talk about screaming “hercules hercules” I’m just saying some folks just need a reason to point fingers. I’m not with folks trying to be something they are not. I’m also wary about coupons sometimes too, especially those for fancy places. You really need to read the fine-print and that’s why I say call ahead about it. No need in getting embarassed. But if you couldn’t afford to go to that place and pay the regular prices one in awhile, then I say don’t front and stay in your lane. Date within your means. Then later down the road, if you want to do something nice and splurge, try out the fancy place and if you have a coupon, you can use the money you saved up to go but didn’t have to use on the coupon for something else.

That’s called being smart.

The last 15 minutes of highly sexual content was brought to you by, “Mr. Nastyman”, now back to your regularly scheduled blogging.

So anyways, I have done some eating out with the coupons, I don’t think twice about it. For the restaurant, its marketing, for me its research, a chance to check out a place at a discount to determine if I would be willing to return at the full price.

kimmie

April 10th, 2012

Lady – My mindset is like this – I don’t go to any establishment unless I can pay full price for what I want. I don’t like to window-shop!LOL!! Coupon or not, if I can’t walk up into Bones that night and afford whatever it is I want on the menu, I don’t go. I save up the money until I can walk in with confidence and enjoy myself. The coupon would just be icing on the cake. I don’t like being beholden to a coupon. Rolling in like I’m not used to nice things and nice places. I’m proud like that. No problem with saving money and catching a deal, absolutely, just be smooth about it.

It puts a real damper on things to be around folks complaining about how expensive something is or how much things cost. It ruins the experience. Had some folks to act like that in Vegas around my wedding.
People are in business to make money. They are not standing around giving away nice things, nice meals. You have to pay to play. If you can’t afford something, stay at home. I worked hard and did all the “right things” – go to college, work 2 jobs, etc, so I could enjoy some of the nicer things in life!

Using coupons to offset the price of a pricey restaurant is one of the benefits of having the coupons, whether you can afford to eat there w/o the coupon or not. It’s an added benefit that affords one the opportunity to actually go to that particular establishment. And, using coupons doesn’t necessarily mean a person is saving their funds, just using their funds wisely. I agree with you, Celisea, if you in fact are “saving,” then go the entire distance and actually save. Cook at home, set your own ambiance and not give that 50% or whatever the percentage may be to a restaurant.

Right now I’m cutting back and eating at home because I spend too much eating out. Rather than spend what 17 bucks for subsandwiches last night, I went to Publix and bought what I needed. I had a taste for that. Granted I spent a couple of dollars more but I had for dinner, again for lunch and probably another sandwich tonight :)

Lady – Exactly. Usually there’s always something in it off the top for the merchant. Folks ain’t just liking patrons like that…ut uh And if you’re running left and right all the time in the name of “free” or “cheap”, usually on the back end of that, you’re taking a hit.

At $80.00 bucks a tank, I’m not spending my gas going to Timbuktu just to save $2.00

My sister runs all over towns at the janky grocery stores to save a few cents off when really I head to Publix and do what I gotta. First I save on gas going to what’s close, then quality is number one for me. Next, it’s only a few cents…how much did she drive out driving all over town? The money she would have spent (and more) at Publix. Then Publix ALWAYS ALWAYS have buy one get one free….always

Not to mention samples and good quality service.

That’s just me though and what humbly works for me :) Oh, and I’m not saying behind her back. I tell her the same.

Or, they spend the entire time we are out moaning about how much stuff costs! You knew what the prices were, or at least a range, before you came! If not within your means, stay home! That’s like buying cheap shoes to save a couple of nickles only to end up with corns and bad feet and surgery to get them fixed…lol. Pay the extra and keep your feet in good condition!

Hey Everyone.

I’m sure we’re way off topic, but I’ll say a lil’ something. I see the value in couponing, but it’s time-consuming, and I honestly haven’t been able to invest the time to make it worthwile. I have a cousin who saves $100 to $200 on groceries alone each month, but he has a whole binder full of coupons that he keeps in his car, and he’s always clipping. As far as coupons and restaurants, I don’t see it any differently than coupons I get in the mail for oil changes, vacations, or anything else. If I find it valuable, and I was already planning on spending that money for that thing, then I’ll use the coupon all day. I’d be foolish not to. I’m not trying to impress anyone by doing that either. If my date doesn’t like it, that’s fine. There are dudes out there who will be exactly what she wants and never ever use a coupon, just like there are women who won’t mind if I do. You gotta pitch to those who are buying what you’re selling.

Coupons? I use them if I have them and if it’s something I use regularly or would like to try. I wouldn’t have a problem with a guy using a coupon on a date. I’ll admit I would feel a little weird at first, but I’d rather have a date who used a coupon than one who was a poor tipper.

I thought at Picadilly somebody came and took your tray away and came by with refills… been a long time, though, and I might be confusing them with S&S. As for to-go orders, I always struggle with that. But unless it’s one of the Curbside to go deals where they bring it out to the car, then generally I do not tip on a takeout.

Jake a.ka. Sweet Peeda Jeeda TWB

April 10th, 2012

On to-go orders, I throw a dollar on the tip line since somebody had to prepare it, maybe two if its ready when I walk in, I always ask how long and time they azz, if I can walk in, say my name, and see my box, or it comes out within 2mins…I’ll tip to-go

How come all of a sudden I’m sitting here thinking about a veggie plate from OK Cafe? Man, I can almost taste that squash casserole (or “souffle” as they call it there)

Slim – I there with you…I get it and soooo agree. I just refuse to spend that much for a pair of shoes that’s gonna do what my price range can do. That’s why I said I don’t have a problem going a tenth of the way for a nice pair of pumps but danggit if I can get ‘em for cheaper (but quality), I’m going in on the best deal.

So I go into a sports store that sales it all…the guy hands me a coupon for 25% off but then I get to reading the fine print and it was like, Not to include Nike, Reebox, Basketball wear, atheletic clothing, any sports gear, anything that has anything to do with any sport etc….I’m thinking, so this is a coupon for something with no name that doesn’t probably cost enough to get 25% off!! WTH…anything worth buying in there was excluded with the coupon. LOL

SlimUno…Brusters in Tucker has that little tip jar outside…and when I pay with my debit card, I always shoot a lil extra on for the kids….Plus because I tip, I always get that extra, in my waffle bowl :)

And as for asking dude the question……Don’t….Tell him what you are looking for and allow him to tote the rock from there….

LOLOL..what’s left? I don’t know if anybody here remember’s Sunshine stores but my mama use to get shoes from there. There were so many of us I would be beside myself when we made the trip for a new pair….even though it was the jeepers or graveyard stompers held together by that little rubber/elastic band. I was soooo happy when mama got paid and I got a pair :) Bless her (my mama…and daddy too) heart…love her. She did what she could with eight kids.

Those are the shoes that came to mind. You get 25% off 4.99

@C: I’m with you, honey! I am all about their veggie plate. You can choose 4, and mine rarely change: collards, black-eyed peas, squash souffle, and mac n’ cheese. WOO! Make your tongue slap your brains out. :)

@Slim: I’m the same way with chicken livers. The longer is stays in my mouth, the bigger it seems to get. I’ve tried them several times, but always end up spitting them out, bc I just cannot force it down my throat. UGH!

Slim…Row is right….the question is loaded…he either gonna run, or he gonna run…..if you really like a dude and everything cool between you two, enjoy the coolness….if he is going to get deeper in the relationship, you won’t need to ask him, he’ll let you know that he wants something committed…that doesn’t mean be a fool, but if its been 6mths or so, its just 6mths, that ain’t shid in love time.

ITL – Imma have to get off of this thing, y’all know I’m a crybaby. I get touched when I think about my mama and daddy’s struggles. Sunshine, Kesslers, Giant Food, franks and beans…all of it. Keeping the family together, keeping the kids home, warm food in our tummies and a roof. Might not have been allllll of that but it was all good :)

Pops looking down and mom’s hanging in there. Spent my day with her yesterday treating her to lunch and watching movies.

I proud of being a crybaby and touched easily. Speaking of crying, I do it at movies, watchng documentaries, hearing stories of folks overcoming all of it.

Okay I’m heading somewhere else now. Gotta go…got a date!!

2years, okay, after 2, a lady can ask, but the bigger question is, if he doesn’t say want the lady wants, is she prepared to keep loving him, which is a trap some women put themselves in…if her feelings are dependent on that answer (marriage I suppose), then does she love the dude and relationship in the first place. We do not respond well to ultimatums

@Jake:  You think women should wait 2 years before the “where do you see this going” conversation??? Um, I think we must be defining that convo differently…..

Jake a.ka. Sweet Peeda Jeeda TWB

April 10th, 2012
5:20 pm

ITL, no I don’t think that….Slim noted that this potential convo was after 2years. I just think that its a slippery slope, becuase I was there, at that point, I was not ready to be married, and honestly was just enjoying it being us, but I wasn’t thinking marriage yet….it really all depends on that man’s station in life…can he afford the responsibility of marriage, which is an answer he knows better than anyone. Here is the trick, if he isn’t saying it, he isn’t thinking it…if he isn’t talking in we’s and our’s, he probably is there yet.
