Tell your mate to lose weight?

Do you know what it’s like to be so caught up in a new romance that you sort of let things fall to the wayside? You get super comfortable being part of a couple and you don’t spend as much time primping, grooming, or uh…exercising.

That’s right a new couple is likely to pack on a few pounds being in love. It is usually something that gets rectified after a couple of weeks, but what happens when weeks turn in to months? Do you tell your partner that they have let themselves go too much?

It is a tough position to be in! You would not want to be the insensitive jerk that dumped someone you really liked over a couple of pounds. I know a lot of people who have a real fear of being in a relationship with someone who let themselves go. Does it mean we are too shallow?

How do you bring up the topic of extra pounds? What can you do if you don’t feel sexually attracted to them because of the weight gain?

Has this situation ever happened to you? What advice can you give for someone facing this relationship dilemma?

A person who will dump you for a few pounds of weight gain, would also dump you over an accident thd caused some dis-figuring scars, or a sudden medical condition that left you impaired. Learn to love the PERSON, not the APPEARANCE.

I disagree with ken…the reason I would be disappointed (not necessarily dump) with my girlfriend/wife letting themselves go (gaining 20+ lbs) wouldn’t be their change in appearance. It would be the change in their behavior (eating/drinking more, eating less healthy, not exercising, etc) that led to their change in appearance. An accident or medical problem is something totally different.

I’m constantly surprised by people who work out in order to attract a mate and then once they find one, they stop doing the thing that attracted their mate in the first place.

we are an obese society… cut the fast food diets.. fries.. carbs etc… yes exercise… walk or jog together.. and eat right.. its healthy.. your fat spouse won’t live long anyway… why does a single women get in shape.. make up.. look hot.. etc.. then let herself go when safely in a relationship ???

That is a great question. I really like it. Gaining a significant amount of weight is showing disrespect for the mate. There is an old axiom, look at her mom and that is what she is going to look like. I have heard[now I do not know how true it is] that women gain weight so as to look unattractive to their husband] and he will lose his interest in her[for sex]. I have seen quite a few that have gone overboard to look unappealing.
You really have to look at the inner person. It could a warm, loving person way down there.

Sometimes women let themselves go and sometimes not. A man expecting a woman to appear before him 20 or 30 years later the same exact way she looked as a young bride shows his level of maturity, hang ups and the need to grow up. All the face lifts, dieting, exercise regimens won’t stop aging. Don’t believe the plethora of commercials that say different. Embrace growing old gracefully. Nothing worse than a woman and more so a man that show an inability to keep moving with time.

I’m sure he’s changed over time as well, he doesn’t see though I’d guess. Funny how men will be the first to point out body flaws all the while looking past their big guts.

Now to answer the Diva’s questions…I am in this situation. I’m 48 and have been married for 13 years. I’ve always been into athletics and being fit. I met my wife through athetics and had many conversations during the dating years about how important being fit was to me for various reasons including being healthy for each other, setting a good example for our kids (she had a kid from a previous marriage), etc. I let her know fitness was going to be an important part of my life forever and that I was looking for a partner that felt the same. When we got married I was 6′ 170 lbs and she was 5′ 7″ 135 lbs.

Since then, she has stopped doing all the things (going to the gym, running) she did that kept her fit. She is over 165 lbs. Meanwhile, I am in the gym 4-5 days a week and still 170 lbs. I still love my wife and don’t have any thought of leaving her. But I am not that sexually attracted to her at this point and I am not wild about the example she is setting for our middle school aged daughter.

I never bring up anything about weight with her. She has brought it up several times over the years and my answer is always the same. It’s not just about the number on the scale. It’s about being fit, being healthy for each other and for setting a good example for our kids. I wish she would get back to that place because it feels really good to feel so healthy as I approach the big 5-0.

Good morning,

Um, I’m one of the slim one’s so I haven’t had to deal with a dude disgusted that i’ve gained weight. If anything, he’d be disgusted that I didn’t carry ENOUGH weight on me. I recently saw of picture of me taken at the end of 2009 and I definitely did have a more round face and a slight increase in weight on me but I had been laid off for 13 months. I’m guessing that was stress, depressed weight that I had which is not good either. As with many women, I do have a mini pooch that the beau talks about all the time but he claims he likes it…yeah whatever. I’m drinking muscle milk so hopefully that’ll help in packing on a few more pounds in conjunction with me working out.

Big girls don’t hate me, I was born this way>/em> ;-)

I forgot a couple of other things…over the years my wife has complained about her back hurting, knees hurting, not sleeping well. Her doctor has reminder her that getting back into exercise can help with all of those things and that her back and knees probably hurt because she is carrying an extra 20+ pounds. My back and knees would hurt too if I strapped a 25-30 pound vest to myself every day.

Well, that’s where your patience have to come into play. If you’re already working out 4 to 5 times a week, it won’t hurt you to put in a little extra attention on getting her back in the groove. We all know that with working out, the hardest part is trying to get out of the gate, mentally convincing yourself that this is actually a good idea. So if you took some extra time to get her out of the running blocks then I’m positive that her complaining my dissipate and actually turn into a positive. Just a thought but only you know your wife and relationship.

There is a difference between loving someone because of the inner beauty, but not being sexually attracted to that same person because they have gained a lot of weight. 10 lbs is not a big deal. But when you go to 15, 20, 30 on up, it becomes a problem. This goes for men and women. You can love someone, but have not sexually attracted to them. Sorry, it’s a fact of life. Those that come up with the old saying “You should love me, no matter how much weight I put on” are only partially right. Yes, I love you. But seeing you without your clothes on isn’t something that arouses me. Don’t be lazy and try to cling to that lazy saying, cause it isn’t true.

SlimUno – you are right on. I’m leaving out many details of things I have tried over the years due to time/space. Every time around New Year’s, we go through another attempt at me trying to work with her to get back into it. But with our and our kid’s busy lives, it’s just impossible to work out together more than once or twice a week. So she is going to need to be able to do it on her own. It really comes down to having that internal motivation to just do it or getting to the point of realizing that not working out (and the results that has) causes more pain than working out does.

al

David – I don’t know about you but it isn’t even just about how she looks. It’s as much about how she feels when I give her a hug. I loved being able to easily wrap my arms around her when I gave her a hug. And I loved how she felt (firm, toned) when I gave her a hug. Now it just feels totally different.

Good Morning,
Hmmm, there is never a good way of telling a woman she is getting a little sloppy. I have deployed the “we” need to start working out babe or I’m getting lazy and need someone to push me. From there create a fun routine for us to do together.
I have found women don’t care when they voice their opinion that you are getting a little sloppy or fat. Lol! They will tell you to your face, tell your brother, leave hints like a gym membership on the kitchen counter. I wish women could handle criticism like men but thats not the world we live in.

I don’t really see anything wrong with being ready to cut someone loose because of weight gain. is it shallow? yep. would I do it? yep. I’m not one that’s nitpicking the pounds so much as how the pounds look on you. if you carry weight well then it’s all good. think about the difference between twenty pounds of brick and twenty pounds of cotton balls. it’s still 20 pounds but those cotton balls take up a lot more space.

Weight gain makes a difference, if a chick’s weight goes up at the same speed as her sex drive it’s even worse. I wouldn’t expect my partner to want to have more sex with me if I gained 30 lbs of fat. Btw gals, sleeping naked is sexy at first, sleeping naked after you gained a lot of weight and are sex crazed, not sexy anymore. If a guy is gonna see ya naked all the time and your booty has gone from nice to fugly, the less we see you naked the better, it actually increases sex drive for some, not all.

size is also relative and people have their preferences. the media would have folks believe that men are into those little skinny/frail/pencil thin chicks but I don’t think that’s the reality. if so, there’s a whole bunch of men settling. I know plenty of thick girls that be getting it in and I know plenty of men that love big hips, big thighs, big butts. I remember hearing the phrase “nothing wants a bone but a dog and even a dog wants some meat”. also, I’m always tickled by “petite” men bragging on their fit 165/170/175 pounds or whatever. to each his own but I need/want a man with some weight backing him up.

What about the men and women who are already fat and they get fatter? Can you tell them to go to the gym? I just got out of a two year relationship and I gained over 70 pounds beause the guy that I was with kept feeding me like I was Hansel and Gretal. Things got out of control. I knew the day when I had a hard time getting up from the toilet that I needed to lose weight. So now I am in the gym trying to work it off. He is still getting bigger and bigger. I kick myself because I cannot belive I was ever with him. I will never date another overweight man again. Fat is not cute….

Morning,

Okaaaaay, where to start?

I, for one am not fat. I am though, that person that could care less what you think…to the point of hammering or belittling. Neither will I allow some man to work me over mentally because I’m not shaped or looking like a teenager 20 or 30 years past puberty. I’m going to take care of myself….for me. I’m not going to hop through hoops because you’re constantly in my ear. If anything, too much of that will get me to hand you a list of “to dos”….. But I LIKE looking descent so I don’t really need that as motivation.

Look at Demi and all the rest of the crackhead looking bunch so hung up and carried away with hanging back in a time that’s past.

Too, if you’re an avid “gym goer”, do you but don’t say I’m lazy because that’s not my thing. You have yours (thing) and I have mind. I’m a separate individual, I don’t have to have the same priorities as you.

wow. good discussion today (again). i’m totally feeling for you, al. you clearly want what’s best for your wife …. for her own health and the health of your marriage. if you can only get one or two workouts in together, then do that. eventually she will get back in the swing of activity and start adding another day or two each week on her own. i’m sorry if this has already been asked/answered but is she comfortable with herself at her new weight?

i hurt my back about a year into this relationship. that put an end to my daily yoga, and it took me about another year of hit and miss activities to really find something else i could do and enjoy. in that time i put on almost 15 lbs. anywho, s/o has never been any less than supportive and physically attracted to me throughout. he’s a real gym rat, so we’ve done a few workouts together and he’s offered up a lot of guidance to help me stay on track.

bottom line … my back is better and my yoga is on again. plus i’ve taken up running. his plan for the coming year is to slowly integrate these activities into his routine so that he can improve his endurance and flexibility right along with his strength training. and it gives us that much more in common. :)

if the sneaker was on the other foot, i’d start some subtle changes (cooking lite, walking together after meals, etc.) just to let him know that it’s important to me that he not get comfortable with letting himself go.

I don’t know what “average” is considered today but I know a 10 isn’t huge. they talk about me like a dog though. in general population, I’m smaller than most of my friends/acquaintances/co-workers/neighbors. To answer your question, she is not comfortable with her weight/size/body composition/enduranace/fitness level at this point. And she sees and has commented how my body has positively changed since I started incorporating weight training into my routine. So she definitely is not oblivious to the relationship between working at staying fit and the results that you get. One more note…I am very capable of gaining weight if I stop working out and stop eating healthy. I sprained my ankle pretty badly 3-4 years ago and had to lay off most strenuous exercise for 2-3 months. During that time, I also got into some bad eating habits and got up to 190lbs. So while I probably do have decent genetics, I also learned the behavior that my parents taught me by all the sports they played and continue to play (parents are 75 and 70 and still play league tennis, take 15 mile bike rides, etc). But as I learned when I was injured, bad habits can overcome good genetics every time.

I have been married 16yrs. You better believe there have been some conversations about weight gain and loss during my marriage. From both of us. I don’t expect him to look like he did 25yrs ago when we met and he does not expect that from me. What I do expect is for him to take care of himself so he is happy with him and vice versa. If a person is not happy with their weight or appearance, it puts a strain on the relationship. He knows when he is not looking his best, just like I do. Also, if you have a problem with your mate’s weight the worst thing to do is berate them or be negative about it. You can’t make a grown person do anything they don’t want to do.

I love all the men on here who are upset when their wives gain weight. She birthed your children and she probably runs her butt off taking care of them, and everything else she keeps up with, which leaves little time for working out. Think about that, and also look in the mirror before you criticize, an overweight man is also not attractive. Be willing to put your money where your mouth is…this goes both ways.

Al, I think the best way to approach her is to start incorporating more excercise into your lives. On the weekends, go for a hike. There are beautiful state parks all over Georgia with tons of trails. Invite your wife to the gym, make it a “couple” thing to go workout and then reward yourselves with dinner out or something. If she doesn’t pick up the hint, you might have to come out and say it, but always couch it in loving, not critical, terms. Oh, and what about cooking? There are tons of healthy versions of basic foods (lasagna, soups, chicken dishes, etc.) on the internet. Maybe offer to cook a few? If you buy groceries, stop buying junk, and say “I’m doing it for me.” A lot of times a person will get on that train with you naturally if you encourage it in a subtle way. I have done it before and it worked. But like I said, if she’s not getting it you might have to be like “honey, I love you and want this to be like it used to be, etc…” You get the picture.

well on the “fat” significant other issue I give men credit. at least they are willing to voice their displeasure. it may not be nice, considerate, sensitive or whatever but they put it out there. women tend to hint around it with all of those suggestive techniques. you’d think by now most women would know that most men don’t do well with hints. if you think your man is fat you better tell him straight out, put it on his screensaver, write it in highlighter and tape it to his steering wheel or something. all that honey let’s take a walk after we finish eating our whole grain pasta stuff will likely go right over his head.

Morning All!

I remember you, Third Wheel. I also remember you talking about your overweight boyfriend. I seem to recall his weight was not the only issue. I am glad you got rid of him. Whatever the reason for your own weight gain, I am glad you are back on the right track and working on losing it. I’m sure since he was overweight, he felt nice and comfortable with you gaining as well. Misery LOVES company!

I am lucky that I have a husband who doesn’t need hints. He takes pride in his appearance, so when he gains a few and his pants start to feel uncomfortable, he works on it. He did not have the best diet when I met him, but I am slowly bringing him and the kids over to my healthier but tasty way of eating. I can be lazy about working out, but I am a little more hyped about it now. I am doing martial arts again and walking and doing the elliptical. I recently bought one of those weighted hula hoops. Great workout!

I don’t fool myself. Even though first and foremost my health is my concern(diabetes is rampant in my family on both sides) I also like to look cute in my clothes. I want to maintain not only how I looked when we met 4 years ago, but get even better.

Staying in shape just makes me feel really good. When I get chunky, I get depressed.

“What advice can you give for someone facing this relationship dilemma?”

Most men after they reach the age of 40 have medical problems (diabetes, high blood presure, etc.) that if not treated properly will affect their weight as well as their sex life. Going to the doctor on a regular basis can prevent obeseity problems caused by a medical condition. Knowledge, good eating habits and daily exercise is the key to understanding men who have problems controlling their weight.

For what it’s worth, and I agree with you 100% Exiled on the fast food, a lot of people eat bad stuff and don’t even realize that it’s not good! Like people who always drink sweet tea, use butter on their bread, have bread with every meal, slather the salad in cheese and dresssing. It blows my mind that people don’t get this stuff. My point it, with a little learning about nutrition you can make better choices without feeling the pain too much.

It seems from tone of most of the posts that it’s a given the woman is the fat one. I see PLENTY of fat men. Plenty. Time and aging affects both genders. When it comes though to availability and duties the scale is tipped. Women carry the weight of the baby, the weight of the housework and child rearing. Unless a man is willing to share the time and load or hire a maid to free a woman’s time, affording her the luxury of hitting the gym everyday then IMO, he’s not afforded a right to complain.

Don’t tell me you’re happy to work out with me when I have to crunch the time in between duties.

I agree Celisea about the men. They are allowed to get away with their complaints by society though because the excuse is that “men are visual”. Well, guess what? Women are too!! But no, we are supposed to accept any slob that decides to give us the time of day and be grateful for it!

Yes, I have dated someone and been totally turned off when they got sloppy, and not just with weight. I am into the total package. Poor hygiene, bad grooming, poor taste in clothing, all of that will turn me off. In fact, I’ve been accepting of a few and more than a few extra pounds when everything else was on point. I take pride in my appearance and do what I need to do to keep myself up, so I expect nothing less in return. You can call it vain and shallow all day, but I’m being 100.

It’s completely unacceptable to just let yourself go and expect me to accept it. That’s completely taking me for granted.

Celisea – Regarding “When it comes though to availability and duties the scale is tipped. Women carry the weight of the baby, the weight of the housework and child rearing”, that is an unfair of a generalization as someone saying it’s always the woman who gains the weight. In our household, we both work in IT and work full time jobs. We cook in 6 days a week and I usually cook 4-5 of those meals. I also do 90% of the homework help with my daughter, coach her sports teams, do the household finances, etc. My wife generally takes care of the laundry and cleaning. So I believe there is a fair distribution of responsibilities.

I believe a big reason why I have enough energy to take care of all that stuff is being fit. It is hard to take care of other people and things if you are not taking care of yourself.

You are correct that you see plenty of fat men. 2/3 of the people in this country are overweight so if you are comparing yourself to the general public, the bar is very low.

@Leggs Hey!! I gained 77lbs in this relationship. I was on the right track when I met him. Then he started getting on my case about spending all my time at the gym and how I should eat more than salads. Plus he is a manager at a pizza chain so he was bringing home food all the time. We would stay in and eat. I tried my best to keep going to the gym but, push came to shove and I gave up. Then two years later I look like I could give birth any day and decided that I cannot continue to live this life like that. So now everyday I get up at 5 in the morning and drive to the gym. I am lucky because my gym is located at my job. I am determined to get this weight off.

As far as still living together it’s heck on earth… I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. We signed a two year lease and we haven’t even made it one year yet. I am throwing my hands up and moving out though. I just don’t care what is going to happen but, a person shouldn’t have to stress about coming home from a long day at work worrying about what drama is going to take place and if the other person is going to start it. Last night I could have sworn that I was going to be on that TV show SNAPPED…. I gotta move.. PRONTO! Thank God I didn’t marry him….

CzBrat – you have good thoughts. We are actually going on a cruise in May and she just mentioned that she has 3 months to get into shape/lose weight for it. The problem with that thinking is what happens when the cruise is over?

It was on a cruise 3 years ago when I realized I had turned a corner on my approach to fitness when it felt totally natural to keep up my normal workout routine on vacation. It is a harder battle when it is not a part of your life as much as brushing your teeth, taking a shower, going to work, etc.

celisea, that’s a tough situation. other than staying active on weekends, doesn’t sound like there’s much you can do about your schedule. it would take tremendous dedication on your part but maybe you can turn your lunch hour into gym time. i used to work at a place where i only got 45 mins for lunch, but there was a free gym on the ground floor. so every day i put in 20 minutes on the eliptical before a quick shower and back to my desk with my homemade lunch. that routine probably woudn’t do much to get one in shape, but it certainly helps contain the damage.

Leggs- You’d be surprised at how many folks just do not get it! They think the word SALAD automatically makes it healthy and it can be 3 times the fat & calories of a lean meat and 3 veggie sides.

Like it kills me to see people get mashed potatoes with gravy and corn and think they are doing something cause both are technically vegetables! You have nothing but starches there to pack on the pounds, not a green vegetable in sight. I’m getting hubs around to see that. The other thing I will say is that I love food but I’m not a huge eater. Never have been. Last night (client dinner), had a salad of which I ate about a third, if that much becuse I wasn’t really hungry. That’s sort of how I eat. Not a wasteful eater just not a big eater. I am a lover of sweets. Doing better there as well. Still have GS cookies that I haven’t finished. It’s been what 3 weeks now?

I’ve never had to tell a lady to lose weight, but if I did it would be tactful. Walking and drinking water works well for me and my health. I’m not into fitness and I’m not fat, I like my size at 265 any smaller I would look like a crack addict. Water is the key, but too much can be toxic to your body.

I’ve been in situations where an overweight woman would complain that she is overweight and ask me what she should do to lose weight, while at the same time eating 2 slices of white bread. If I tell her that she needs to cut down on white bread and eat whole wheat bread instead, she cries and calls me insenstive jerk! But SHE herself asked me how she should lose weight.

Someone explain that to me…

@Leggs yes he has some mental issues but, he doesn’t want to get help for them. I think he is either BiPolar or suffers from depression somewhat. He thinks he is the cat’s meow though. He goes on these dating websites and create fake profiles to get these girls roped in. When we first started dating I think he was 400lbs but he is like 6′1. He is the first overweight person that I have ever dated so I wanted to give him a chance. Plus I met him when I was in high school and he was super hot back then so I figured life had gotten in the way for him because of his divorce so I didn’t want to shoot him down. Now I wish I had…

What’s up, blog peeps?

On topic: Happily for me, Mrs. Swiss is a fitness freak. As for me, I hate the gym as much as anybody, but I do stay active with tennis, jogging, etc. And, even though it bores me to tears, I try to fit in some workouts at home — push-ups, sit-ups, light weights, etc. — in our little exercise room at home. Since Mrs. Swiss hates a lot of my white-boy music, I use that as an opportunity to blast some of the stuff I wouldn’t listen to with her while I’m at it.

Oh, and cooking at home can make a huge difference as well. Restaurant food is terrible for you, for the most part. And actually, we prefer the taste of our own cooking, anyway. Plus it can be fun & it save a ton of money, to boot. As a matter of fact, not to brag or anything, but you won’t find a better grilled salmon anywhere on this planet on on my deck. Just sayin’… :D

and as far as eating out; here’s my fb post today “after a month of no fast food, no takeout and no pizza deliveries, on this, the last day of february, i transferred an extra $150 into my savings account! (and treated myself to a new pair of shoes *cough*) HOORAY FOR DISCIPLINE!!!”

Purple

February 29th, 2012
3:13 pm

cz, the first one she bought me has 3 rows of diamonds and is very wide. Once I left corporate and came back home it was to big for me to be working our farm with so she bought me a band. Initially I bought her a really nice rock etc….but after the baby both the engagement ring and the band would scratch the baby so i bought her a smaller band, hence we each have two. So now depending on what we are doing is how we decide on which ring to wear.

kimmie - the original :)

February 29th, 2012
3:15 pm

Brat – I think that should be taken into consideration if it’s a concern expressed by the fiance’. My husband did not want any diamonds or flash, just a simple band. I know a lot of men don’t want anything too expensive because they have to take it off all the time.

Quality was more of concern with me, and I have modern taste in jewelry, not tradional or conservative. I’d rather have something smaller but well-made, unique and stylish. That is what I have. My hairstylist got married a few months after I did and it was awhile before I saw her ring because she could not wear it doing hair at the shop. It’s a beauty though.

Taste and yes, practicality should rule your decision.

Brat – I do respect individuality in the work place! I do it whenever I can.

Ironically Frank Ski was having a discussion about this this morning with Phaedra from RHOA. He brought up some criticism that Wendy Williams made about Viola Davis wearing her hair natural to the Oscars. Phaedra said we’ve come a long way in corp America though we still have to watch it. As long as it’s neat, do you, she said. But I don’t consider anything in the arts really “corporate” even though that was the Oscars. Creative people are just that, creative, not cookie-cutter. They can push the envelope easier, in fact, it’s expected. Ski, and WW get on my nerves!

I wouldn’t normally give away my secrets like this, but for you, C, I’ll make an exception.

First thing is you want to make sure you start with good fish. Make sure it’s wild, not that farm-raised gobbidge. I prefer the King salmon, personally, although sockeye is good, too. (For you, I would recommend King, as sockeye has a little stronger flavor)

If you’re grilling, you’re going to want the cuts with the skin on one side.

And don’t let it sit around, you’ve got to cook that sucker fast. I try to cook it the same day, if possible, or the very next day at the latest.

Wash the fish off with some limes — just slice up some limes, squeeze most of the juice out to use in the marinade & use the pulp/peel to scrub the fish really well.

Now, for the marinade: Melt some butter and mix in the lime juice from before, plus some lemon juice, garlic and dill. I also like to add in black pepper, basil, parsley and just a few drops of Dale’s seasoning.

Get the grill super hot, brush the non-skin side of the fish with some olive oil & put the fish with the skin side UP on the hot grill for 5 minutes or so (depending on the thickness of the fish) to sear it. Then brush the skin side with olive oil, turn the fish & lower the heat on the grill. Drizzle the marinade generously on the flesh side of the fish & come back every few minutes to add a little more until it’s done.

The skin should come right very easily when it’s done. Mmmmm mmm. Good eating…

disco – I panicked. When I realized my neighbor didn’t return no lie, I almost called her. Then I thought, nah that would be crazy. It was late, I needed to get up and go. Really I don’t use the blow dryer or too much heat at home at all. Only during my hair appointments. I don’t really do a lot of washing though in between unless, like in this case I gotta be somewhere or do something same/next day.

Too much heat is bad.
