The Ex Files: Keep old mementos?

My friend Lewis recently had dinner at his lady friend’s house. He noticed a lot of racy pictures of her that she displayed in her living room. When he inquired about them, she said that her former boyfriend took the pictures and she kept them because they were so beautiful. I am not sure if Lewis was bothered more by the nearly nude images or the fact that the “guy before him” took them.

He asked me if I kept things from past relationships and I actually had to think really hard to remember. I had kept a lot! I also forgot that some of it came from an ex. It’s interesting to see how the things we hold on to from our past relationships become a part of who we are. If it was a gift from an ex, the sentimental value is there but that doesn’t mean we haven’t moved on.

How much “stuff” do you still have from your past relationships? Would you keep racy pictures, sex tapes, jewelry, etc. that would be a constant reminder about them?

Would your exes be surprised at the things you still have from the time you spent together?

Would you want the person you are dating to conceal those sentimental things?

P.S. Did you know that you can make money by selling stuff from your exes? “Never Liked it Anyway” lets you unload stuff from bad relationships. Yes. I am mad that I didn’t think of this too.

leggs – the guy who bought me the dooney bucket bag was caught off guard. I don’t recall how much it cost but I do remember that I moseyed up to him in the store and asked if he’d buy me a purse. he was all “I’m the man, big spender, get what you want”. imagine his surprise at the cash register. he told me in the car that when I asked for a purse he figured it only cost $30 or $40. I laughed. (sucker….)

Disco, that is a really cool story – I’m smiling – reciprocation and remembrance is always nice.

My mommie bought me both an LV (very small of course) and a Gucci my 12th grade year. I bought another one, LV, a few years later and another Gucci…but that’s about it. I’ve never bought a Coach. I like them, just never moved to get one.

That’s cute disco. I realize it may be a running joke, but I bet you $100 you’ll get that bag one day.

Too funny, Celisea has kicked me to the outlet mall and away from HST. I am cracking up.

Lady, I too prefer the classic Coach bag with the little c. Coach really was a leather maker in the beginning more than today’s fabric with stitching. I do like how they’ve gone back to their roots with the solid leather bags.

Awww, disco. That’s a nice story. :)

I only carry the classic leather coach bags; I just don’t care for the trendy printed stuff they do now. Besides, their leather is so soft and has such a great hand.

I always feel a bit funny if a guy buys me something that’s super expensive. I don’t know why that is…I even felt funny when the beau treated me for my birthday last year for this tattoo I wanted. So tying in with the topic, since the beau paid for my tat, I suppose that’s one gift that I will take with me in any future relationships if this one doesn’t pan out.

Speaking of which, how do you all feel about dating someone that has a tat of an ex’s name on their body????

leggs – I won’t call it a running joke but I will admit it was cute when it first started more than 15 years ago. my brother is hardworking and industrious. he sets goals and busts his butt to achieve them. I’m confident he’ll come through one day so I can’t take you up on that bet.

there’s a sunshine yellow dooney in tj maxx right now. I’ve been eyeballing it for a couple of weeks. I want it – especially with the spring season looming – but they have the nerve to be charging “department store prices” and I refuse to pay that much in tj maxx. still, that bag is screaming my name.

Only good to bet on that which you know you will win (unlike freaking Cash 4).

Sooo HST what’s up with you being a designer dude? I mean I like a crisp clean cut (fine) dude but you see REALLY in tune. Almost more than some of us ladies. I like nice stuff for real but I dunno, I’m not as in tune as much now. I won’t skimp on good shoes….no way but I don’t get the same thrill that I use to.

celisea/lady – I think a lot of my friends feel the same way about dooney. that might be part of the reason why I’m drawn to them. I’ve always been a bit contrary and plus I like to not have what everyone else has. I can appreciate coach but you can walk in a room and see three or four women carrying the same coach bag. I’m not even in the league of the big dogs like birkin, hermes. I also couldn’t ever splurge on a designer scarf. I have natural hair and most scarves end up tied around my head.

I’ve never dated anyone who had someone’s name tattooed on them. one of my friends’ 19 year old daughter recently got a tat with her boyfriend’s initials. my friend was fit to be tied. we spent the afternoon thinking of alternative phrases that the initials could stand for.

disco – a cousin of mine had a guy’s initials tattooed on her. When it didn’t work out, she said the MM now stood for Money Maker. I don’t think that was any better, especially since it was tatted on her upper butt cheek

LOL@Celisea: That was me (Not Celisea)!! I had to get a plug in for you… :)

@Slim: I wouldn’t want that. I did consider it once, but I’m glad it never got past that stage. I have one tat that has very special meaning to me, and is likely the only one I will ever have. When Ex 2 talked about getting my name, I told him if he ever did, I wanted it on his side (think: The “you’re my rib, girl” scene from Baby Boy – that gets me every time).

Slim1 some folks with tats have gone mad from what I’ve seen. I saw a lady with them around her neck, on her jaw and face. I wasn’t being judgemental because I don’t have to deal with her but I wondered who would. Natives from the South Pacific (Polynesians) I understand, that is a way of life to have them on their face.
