The Ex Files: Keep old mementos?

My friend Lewis recently had dinner at his lady friend’s house. He noticed a lot of racy pictures of her that she displayed in her living room. When he inquired about them, she said that her former boyfriend took the pictures and she kept them because they were so beautiful. I am not sure if Lewis was bothered more by the nearly nude images or the fact that the “guy before him” took them.

He asked me if I kept things from past relationships and I actually had to think really hard to remember. I had kept a lot! I also forgot that some of it came from an ex. It’s interesting to see how the things we hold on to from our past relationships become a part of who we are. If it was a gift from an ex, the sentimental value is there but that doesn’t mean we haven’t moved on.

How much “stuff” do you still have from your past relationships? Would you keep racy pictures, sex tapes, jewelry, etc. that would be a constant reminder about them?

Would your exes be surprised at the things you still have from the time you spent together?

Would you want the person you are dating to conceal those sentimental things?

P.S. Did you know that you can make money by selling stuff from your exes? “Never Liked it Anyway” lets you unload stuff from bad relationships. Yes. I am mad that I didn’t think of this too.

ITL – I forgot about purses. I’ve got a dooney bucket bag and a dooney tote that one ex bought me. have had those bags for more than 10 years. don’t carry them much but they still get compliments when I do break them out.

I’m really liking the perspectives from the woman out here. I was contemplating this very subject recently. I like to be generous, I enjoy the looks on my GF’s face when they receive gifts from me. When I see them years later rocking the jewelry I bought them…I always feel great.

Burning bridges or being a DB is a bad way to go through out life. I could never imagine being so petty as to ask for a gift back. What kind of guy does that?

Sorry to hear that about someone you know. I remember when my friend was killed during the missing and murdered fracass, I felt blank and empty. Like a piece of my childhood died with him.

I should really add purses always with the matching wallet as well. I was at Starbucks the other day and an old GF came in for coffee. Low and behold she’s using the purse I bought her in 2005. She was recently married – I wonder if she told him I bought that bag? I could care less but it was great to see her still enjoying the bag and wallet.

@Celisea ~ the young woman who struck and killed Ms. Thomas has ruined her life at the tender age of 22. They interviewed her mother on the news this morning, and all I can say is her mothe appears to be an alcohlolic herself or a druggie. She looks like she’s been rode hard and left dangling on a clothes hanger. Perhaps the daughter has been using the bottle as an escape!!!

So sorry that this hit home for you!

@JustMe ~ let me clarify. My dress wasn’t purchased at a store. I bought it from a gf. Still stunning. Senfd me your info, I’ll send you a pic. Heck, perhaps it could fit you.

@BF ~ then it would mean even more with it not being light enhanced (that’s funny).

@JustMe ~ you know how we sometimes leave our dishes and large knives in the drainer over night? Well, I try to put everything away, especially the big knives. If anyone should break in in the middle of the night, I am not going to have weapons out to make your job easier. If you didn’t come with one (which I know you did), you’ll have to go to the drawer and get it. It won’t be lying out for you. Hell, those few extra minutes of you getting one may help me better hide. Yeah, I watch too many movies (lol).

Slim, no it isn’t, it’s being used as it was intended to be.

Sometimes I feel weird about having a “safe queen” watch. I’ve often wondered would this watch be better having a life on someone’s wrist? Then I realized, it will one day on my son. I quit wearing it because I will not wear a watch anymore that is less than 44mm on the face.

“I wonder if she told him I bought that bag? I could care less but it was great to see her still enjoying the bag and wallet.”

@H S T ~ no need to wonder, more than likely she didn’t. Not many women have even the tiniest convo with their men about purses in their closets. Now, if they went to the store together to purchase one, ummm, maybe, but doubtful.

BF – Well he has neck pain frequently so I guess she was trying to be thoughtful and help give him something to better align his neck at night. He has probably slept on it maybe once. I failed to mention she mailed to him last Valentines and YES we were together then. She was pushing hard to get him back. She even sent unsigned Christmas cards last year but we both know it was her..

Too funny we’re talking about purses because just the other day this guy said he was going to buy me a purse since I’m always complaining about the one I presently carry. One of my customers bought me a Louis V bag from New York, which I told him he didn’t have to do that. I’m not quite certain if it was the real deal, since i’m not big into bags, or if he got it from one of those ‘back of a truck’ type deals lol

Celisea ~ I really want a Coach bag. Saw a beautiful chocolate one at Lenox that I couldn’t afford. I’ve thought about that bag many times. I remember seeing this young woman come in with a man and she picked out a $450 bag and he quietly paid for it. Oh I could say is dang, your cooch must be gold (because she was so young)…

I keep absolutely no mementos of any kind, unless you count the kids from a 20 year marriage — those I’ll keep! Otherwise, no pictures, no gifts, no nothing. I’m not much of pack rat anyway, I regularly get rid of stuff I no longer need or want, either to Good Will, the trash, etc.

Saving stuff like that is something chicks do. Guys typically don’t care about things like that — exceptions to everything though, as always. When I see things like that saved by a chick, I figure it just goes with the turf, and don’t think much of it. Sex tapes, racy pictures, etc.? Well now, things like that shouldn’t be made in the first place, and would be a deal breaker if dating. I recommend getting rid of things like that anyway.

talking of bags puts me in mind of my youngest brother. he’s only 4 years older than my son so our relationship is almost more mother/son than sister/brother. I’ve always done a lot for him. after his high school graduation he wrote me the sweetest thank you note and promised me a Louis bag one day. after his college graduation he sent me a similar note with the same promise. he’s now in grad school and every now and again tells me he’s a little bit closer to fulfilling his promise.
