Should parents pick your mate?

Whenever I hear the words “Let me introduce you to my son”, I already know which direction the conversation will go. I hear it a lot, actually. What can I tell you? Mothers love me. I’m like the Mom Whisperer or something.

For years I have graciously declined the meet my son offers. I figured that well-meaning mothers really don’t know for sure if I am a good match for their sons. Further, how many men would actually look forward to being hooked up by their Mom?

Then I met a guy this weekend who is the son of a woman I have known for years. The fact that he is crazy handsome, successful, and charming as they come sort of changed my notion about Mother Matchmakers.

Maybe our Mothers really do know best and is it terrible to let them do a little matchmaking every know and again? Would you be open to being introduced to a potential match that your parents selected for you?

Have you ever met someone through their parents and things went really great?

On a semi-related note: I have always been fascinated by arranged marriages. A lot of cultures still practice this tradition and I would be curious to find out more information about the divorce rates among arranged marriages.

The divorce rate in arranged marriages is very low. Divorce is generally not an option and the couple work hard to MAKE it work…something totally lacking in our culture. Not totally the decisions of the parents typically that makes it work so well, but the dedication and commitment of the pair to fall in love and stay in love.

good point Randy but the culture embraces the dedication……reminds me of the cultural diversity class I took recently…..your stats is true divorce is low……..

Good morning all,

Um..I’ve never experienced my parents trying to hook me up with anyone & I think I like it that way. As far as other dudes parents, I’ve had some root in my favor that something really popped off with us. Hell, even my exes mother still holds onto hope that her son and I will get back together, and it’s been damn near 3+yrs since we’ve broken up. lol

good morning guys. parents as matchmakers. I don’t suppose anyone here is jewish? it’s been my experience that jewish mothers have it bad. personally, my parents have “good people” syndrome. so and so may have this, this and this wrong with him but basically he’s good people. that wouldn’t work for me. once I did volunteer work and one of the little old ladies that I ran errands for was constantly trying to hook me up with her son. I thought to myself – if your son was about anything you wouldn’t need a non-profit to arrange for a volunteer to get your groceries and prescriptions picked up. your son would be doing it. still, I’m not totally against it. heck, the way I see it, a hook up is a hook up. every now and again they work.

btw – who suggested I read little bee? granted my arm wasn’t twisted but this book was a HUGE let down. very disappointing in my opinion.

@SlimNu – yikes $14 is that the going ticket price in the ATL? I paid $9 to see the new spy movie Tinker Tailor… don’t know what the reviewers were raving about but I fell asleep and walked out after 1hr 15 mins.

C – Out of your whole post, the fact that you had SNACKS is what stood out to me. You must be balling if you buy snacks from the concession stand lol I’m not afraid to bring my own, if you know what I mean. But let me tell you, the beau and I went to the movies Saturday. They had a whole new strategy by making you purchase your tickets at the concession stand, as opposed to buying them when you first walk in. We both sort of laughed about it but thought it was a clever idea.

Just because it works in India..don’t mean it will work here. Most of those other countries and culture treat women no less than they do the family pets or cattle. There is something to be said for freedom of choice be it bad or good..it is still the ability to choose.

sounds like there was a lot of movie watching going on this weekend. I read a book called heat on Saturday. about a Cuban family and baseball. it was pretty good. Sunday I read little bee. it wasn’t so good.

kym – I’ve read many bios re arranged marriages. most are with Chinese or Indian families. there are some great love stories there and some horrendous horror stories as well. guess at the end of the day, their arranged marriages have about the same chance as our selective marriages.

Slim – Not balling….lol That was funny though and you’re right. When I do make a weekend at the movies, it’s at Parkway Pointe and let me tell you, it was packed. The ticket window line was stretched as far as the eye could see, the 4 kiosks (for purchasing tickets) had 4 beastly lines and the concession lines? Worse! EVERY SINGLE LINE was packed. Folks was buying “supper”…lol And I know this is wrong but I was thinking “there are soooo many fat folks in line” No lie, after looking at all the big girls and boys, I scale back and resisted the popcorn with all that butter, to a box of candy and a coke. But yeah, on what you said, a person will spend a grip paying for tickets and “snacks.” For a couple, $22 for tickets and what about $15 – $20 for snacks. I just as well would prefer a nice sit down at a restaurant for that money.

Morning All!

I’m with you, Kym, just because it “seems” to work in other cultures doesn’t mean arranged marriage will work here. I say SEEM, because just because the divorce rate is low doesn’t necessarily mean the marriages are happy. They embrace the entire culture and concepts, so submitting to the arranged marriage means agreeing to all that goes with it, including the fact that you probably will never divorce even if you wanted to. It doesn’t mean that problems don’t exist in the marriage like infidelity or abuse, etc.

On topic – Both of my parents are gone. Thinking back, I would have probably liked whomever my parents introduced me to if they would have been inclined to do so. Especially my mom – we had similiar taste. She would have picked out someone spectacular for me. My dad could have introduced me to one of those up and coming interns he worked with.

Yeah, that would have worked out really well. Sorry we didn’t think about it years ago. Could have probably saved myself alot of grief. Oh well.

“Would you be open to being introduced to a potential match that your parents selected for you?”

This past Christmas I was visiting my Mother who lives in Washington, DC. Since Christmas was on Sunday I went to Church (AME) with my Mother. My Mother sits on the second row in front of the pulpit in a 5,000 seat Church. We got to Church early so my Mother could meet and greet her Church friends. I noticed when I went to sit down with my Mother she had surrounded me with single females who wanted to meet one of her Son’s who is single. My Mother, bless her heart.

Until 90-100 years ago, marriages by choice of the bride and groom and based on love didn’t happen much in this country. It was either an arrangement or circumstantial requirement. Marriage in those days was taken more seriously than today, and of course, women’s rights, while a hot topic, were not a factor in women’s favor.

Movies: War Horse is pretty good. Long, though. Devil Inside is a definite wait-for-netflix. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a maybe — I saw the original Dutch film of that, it was pretty good — but probably will wait for Netflix on that one, too. War Horse was worth seeing in a theater.

Hell, no!
i once was in a situation in which the girl was in a relationship with another guy that turned out to be more serious than I thought. They eventually got married. Everybody in her family (or at least, her mother) seemed to take it as a given that she would marry this guy, although it was a long-distance romance. I have never been able to quite shake off the idea that although it wasn’t strictly speaking, arranged as in the days of old, or as in some Middle Eastern countries, the parents certainly didn’t mind that she married him and not me.

MMeello – I said I was working and I am. I should have never peeked back over but since I did:

Some are saved and some are not. My Sunday School Teacher (we have adult classes) is sooooo fine. I ain’t gon lie. I have had a wicked thought…or two. When I talk about a brother with thick thighs…mmm mmm mmm…ding ding ding…he fits the mold. He is 36 and married. We have a VERY open class with VERY open dialog and sometimes he talks of his stuggles. He’s very comical and very open. Sometimes he’ll say (for the perpetrating brothers in the class), I love women….always have but I’m saved first and married next. He says I see the women and they make sure you see them but the spirit within rebukes or sends me another way. Then he says even if I entertain the thought for a second, I think about my wife and the hurt it would cause her so, I keep right on with my journey. For some reason though he always catches my eye and says, you know you’re my sidekick and I’m looking for you to back me up (if I’m having a quiet Sunday), “what say you (on whatever we’re talking about)?” Sometimes though I’ve had to say “forgive me Lord”…for real. The mind is a wicked thing and will jump in a hot sec.

Now Mmeello, I will say this, my church don’t do the hoochies and the women doing the deacons, so forth and so on. Nope, my church is “saved” for real. It’s either you walk the walk or you move it along. None of that foolishness going on. Spirit abiding, spirit revealing, spirit ruling…not man, God’s Spirit. Not saying no mishaps but there’s a difference in coming from a way of life versus living one way in front of folks and another behind closed doors. When you see churches with drama from here to heaven and never straighten out, something ain’t right but it’s not that the power of God cannot correct.

Okay, that’s probably too much for some but it’s truth. MMeello, you asked…lol Gotta run.

Feenin, scratching and twitching like a Jake.

Of course that came up while he tried in vain to get in my house, but when I’m done…I’m done. I don’t back track.

Why did you decide to stop seeing him?

Slim Nu I stopped seeing him for several reasons but the main one was that I wanted a more meaningful relationship and I wasn’t going to meet who I was supposed to be with if the boy toy was in his place. He was only there for one purpose and we both knew that all the while so I couldn’t understand why he acted like that. He did everything short of laying on the ground and having a tantrum.. We weren’t supposed to catch feelings so I made sure I didn’t…can’t say the same about him but it ain’t my fault.

One more….then I gotta finish…sex from ex IMO is a game. Nope, not happening. I was there in that place once, with my kid’s dad. Truth…only time I’ve ever been there. IMO, I got too much pride to know you’re coming back, yet moving on. Don’t lean on me for that. If I gotta chance the new then so do you. I was in a different place in the head. I thought he was the be all to end all….in bed. Probably the best sex if I REALLY had to line folks up….that’s just physically. All the other crap about him depleted his number by comparison if I’m talking a person as a whole. But physically, heck yeah. He was leaning on that too. I mean I was just as guilty as not wanting to venture out but once I snapped out of it I didn’t do that reverting crap no more and didn’t let anybody in my head (once out) to get back in…not physically. No do overs. Only time Imma revert back is if we’re giving the whole thing another try. That’s likely not gonna happen though…if it was something that got off the ground, went full swing and we didn’t make it. Not trying to sound hard but for some reason, IMO they seem to be benefiting better from reverting.

This could very well be my antiquated way of thinking too. Just what I’ve done and what’s worked for me. Keeps my head clear.

One last one for real…I ain’t got but 2 hours and still got another ton of stuff to finish.

One thing I’ve noticed, little boys can come out not being all that handsome. A fresh cut around 2ish, fresh kicks and he’s good to go. A little girl, if she ain’t “blessed with the good genes” well, all the cute dresses, ribbons and hairbows don’t exactly help that….lol I know that sounds mean but I’m just saying. Ribbons, hairbows, cute hair styles, slicking down the baby hair but ain’t a lot gonna change in other places. Little boys, their “cuteness” often kicks in if you keep a fresh cut and keep him fresh. NY Post is a decent publication. Nothing like Star or Inquirer…can’t beat the sales of The NY Daily News, but right under its rung on the ladder (I think).

They get to come up with their own punishments! WOW, I’ve heard it all. No doubt Jada probably believes she’s letting “Ill Whip My Hair Back and forth” little girl tap into her own creativity in dressing herself. Well, Jada needs to rein it in and tell that girl she needs to hire a stylist because she looks a hot mess. Punky Brewster had that look on lock, never to be duplicated….

No. If you cannot make up your own mind, all your future decisions will bother you.
Parents, friends,if it doesn’t work out and ends badly, if the person speaks to you, guess who will get the blame?

I agree Willow looks a hot mess. And I don’t knock alternative ways to raise kids either, if it works!

I’ve seen the Post in stores here – very tabloidish if you ask me, but there’s a place for that too. Everything has gone tabloid to me, true journalism is really becoming a thing of the past. Then too, Enquirer has been right on a few things – they broke the John Edwards story.

Thanks for spelling Enquirer correctly. I kept looking at the word not knowing what was wrong, but knew something was wrong (lol).

Perhaps the Post has changed from when I lived in NY.

Leggs – A lot of the Post’s headlines are funny. I remember when Trump was going thru his divorce from Ivana. Ivana used to run the Plaza hotel that Trump bought. The Post had this crazy headline GIMME THE PLAZA!!!

It’s about 3 waitresses working at an Italian Restaurant frequented, hell owned, by Mobs. A twist developed I wasn’t expecting, but ok movie.

Did any of you watch HWOA last night? If so, what do you all think about Peter and Cynthia’s marriage?

Slim – I don’t watch it, just read the recaps on this newspaper. From all accounts, why she married his old mean behind I do not know. But maybe things are not what they seem on tv. Maybe it’s actually better than it appears, or it’s way worse.

Well, he just seems so combative…this fool couldn’t even answer what he loved about his wife when asked. He comes back with, the reasons I love you is not why we’re here. I was like DAYUM that’s cold-blooded. He doesn’t seem to have much practice in compromising which is a must in marriage. It’s hard to be successful with a, My way or the highway type attitude

I recorded it but read the recaps here today. Peter is stubborn, thinking he’s teaching Cynthia something, all the while forgetting to be a husband. So what you don’t like “good byes.” That’s a cop out and any woman not calling him on that BS gets what she gets. You can let me know you’re leaving and you’ll meet me back at the house w/o using the words “goodbye.” That’s a major problem with people, they take at face value what a person says as though it’s gospel and dare not challenge….

Leggs – I had missed the very beginning of it when they discussed him ditching her because basically that’s what it was. There really was no valid reason for him not at least saying, Hey babe, I see you have this under control, i’m proud of you but i’m going to slip on out of here. Enjoy yourself and I’ll see you later on tonight. To me, he might have felt some kind of way about her doing her own thing after he’s made several attempts in various business ventures. Do I sense a tinge of jealousy??

Exactly, SlimNu…you can let me know you’re leaving w/o saying goodbye. What a piss poor excuse, but he truly believes it. He’s been using that line soI don’t think Cynthia’s venture is going to fare well either….either Peter will see to that one way or another or Cynthia may have a minor breakdown. A tinge of jealousy…I’m under my desk laughing!!!!
