Unhealthy relationships..literally

It’s so funny how you start dating someone and take on some of their habits, quirks, and lifestyle. You begin to share the same behaviors, some good, some not so good. Sometimes you even become influenced by them. It’s like sexy peer pressure.

What happens when you start dating someone and pick up their bad habits? For instance, my friend Brad hated cigarettes. He meets Gina and suddenly he is not only fine with cigarettes, she has him smoking cigars! The things we do when we are blinded by love, right?

Have you ever noticed a bad habit you picked up after dating someone? Why does it seem as if we become so impressionable when the person we are seeing starts to influence our lives?

How do you know if your relationship is unhealthy and how do you handle it if it is?

No I haven’t picked up any bad habits, I tend to lose them when dating. You know it’s unhealthy if the relationship causes any type of stress, best thing to do is look at the situation and if it is really unhealthy leave it.

Good morning….HAPPY FRIDAY!

Picked up smoking cigars after dating a woman who smoked cigarettes and never smoked before -WEAK AND STUPID.

Anyway, I can’t recall picking up any bad habits from a man I’ve dated. Hell, I have enough of my own.

Morning you two lovelies,

Sadly yes. Many many many moons ago…cussing, drinking (well not a bad habit per se) and asking to light his cigarette. That went from lighting to a pull here and there. Thankfully that’s not something I induldged in….even he would say don’t play with cigarettes. But yeah, as soon as I got away from him all the bad habits fell off :)

It is good to be a woman:

1. We got off the Titanic first.
2. We can scare male bosses with mysterious gynecological disorder excuses.
3. Taxis stop for us.
4. We don ‘t look like a frog in a blender when dancing.
5. No fashion faux pas we make could ever rival the Speedo.
6. We don ‘t have to pass gas to amuse ourselves.
7. If we forget to shave, no one has to know.
8. We can congratulate our teammate without ever touching her rear end.
9. We never have to reach down every so often to make sure our privates are still there.
10. We have the ability to dress ourselves.
11. We can talk to the opposite sex without having to picture them naked.
12. If we marry someone 20 years younger, we are aware that we will look like an idiot.
13. We will never regret piercing our ears.
14. There are times when chocolate really can solve all your problems.
15. We can make comments about how silly men are in their presence because they aren’t listening anyway.

Personally I think picking up bad habits from those around your or those you date has to do with maturity level and how well you know yourself. As you get older and more mature, and you have a moral compass and things you prefer not to do (smoking, drinking), you won’t do those things just to “impress” the one you are dating or to have something in common with them. Commonality is when you both come to the table possessing the same thing, not picking it up once you are there.

Celisea

October 21st, 2011

oneofeach4me – I agree. I don’t really associate with folks that are carrying “bad habits.” I agree that maturation will eliminate either “bad habits” per se or keeping company with folks that have bad habits.

Morning All!!

Leggs – Dang, you should have typed that yesterday, then I would have remembered to pack me some chilli for lunch!!!LOL

On topic – While never really a vegetarian, I ate lean meats at a minimum and pizza only on occasion. That has changed since dating and marrying a meat lover. I need to call him the Baconater! The man eats and sleeps meat. And he and the kids have to have pizza at least once a week. Yall know reading me I am a foodie and cook. I grew up with a mother that was a phenomenal cook. We had at least 3 veggies or 2 and a salad at dinner and always had fresh fruit in the house. I am slowing influencing them, but I did put on weight when I started seeing him. I am just now getting back toward what I was before we met but it is hard. I am getting back to my better eating habits. I make them welcome to join me in my healthier lifestyle. But I am having the last laugh because they keep getting colds and such. All last week and part of this week. I have managed to remain healthy thru it all!

Environment plays a huge part. Environment is not limited to geography. If you keep company with someone that practices things less than favorable or that’s simply not “you”, you could very well gravitate to doing. Again, I think growing up and “moving away from” will take care of idiosyncrasies and what nots that particularly don’t belong to you.

In a relationship now where partner complained all I wanted was to make out and have sex, which has effectively killed any passion. We’ve gone from getting it on at least 1 to 2 times a day (sometimes more) to just twice this week. I’m no longer comfortable being passionate/sensual/sexual around my partner. good point, 4me. but let me add some perspective. in our case, s/o’s fave is mexican food and margaritas; mine is italian and wine. when we started dating we introduced each other to some of our faves (as is the norm). it just so happens he was already familiar with italian food and just didn’t care for it. the only thing i knew of mexican food was taco bell, and i knew nothing of mixed drinks.

i got hooked on carnitas, enchiladas, sopapillas, oh my! discovering the best mexican spots in town became one of OUR favorite things to do together. by no means has the man turned me into a pig nor an alcoholic, but I acknowledge that i’ve changed my eating habits and it began to show. so i’ve changed my activity level accordingly. how’s that for maturity?

and as for commonality, we did come to the table possessing the same thing; the means and willingness to explore new places, sample different things and truly enjoy our time, ambiance and conversation.

well, it’s not exactly in line with habits but one thing I expect to get out of relationships (romantic and platonic) is new ideas or experiences. I want people to “turn me on” to something. I hate being the one to always suggest restaurants, activities, books, movies, whatever. If someone can introduce me to something I haven’t experienced and it turns out that I like that something then they have, in that small way, improved my life a little bit. it can be as simple as selecting something on a menu that I’ve never had before or getting me to watch a movie that I never would have selected on my own. I know this is a small thing but it’s big to me.

Oh…and until I dated a dude that was, in reality, overweight, I never had a weight problem.

I fell into a pattern of inactivity, overeating and eating every time a 6′4″ 300 pound man did. It was a cycle that has taken *years* to break and that I still struggle with more than I like to admit.

At first, I excused myself with “I’m not a teenager anymore so I’m not always going to have a teenager’s body.” Oh..if only I had been more aware. I eventually got up to 222 pounds. Once I got serious, I lost 50 pounds in less than a year. These days, I seem to consistently fight with 10 – 15 so-called “vanity pounds.”

It is one of the reasons that I have become an advocate of healthy living. And why I’m always telling younger women “Hold onto it while you’ve got it. The time to develop healthy habits is BEFORE you have a problem.”

(And with that, I’m done soapboxing for the day.)

That is a great question. I really like it. It is really a case of predisposition. You were already [hardwired] to pickup the other persons bad habits. Without really being aware of it, you were attracted to that person for that very reason. There is nothing that can be done, you are destined to keep making the same choices, unless there is behavior modification. That hardly ever works so you are stuck. As the psychiatrist says, psychoanalyze a jerk and what do you have, a psychoanalyzed jerk.

I was somewhat amused at Leggs’ comments towards me in WiseDiva’s last blog the other day–and the volume of her (or his) posts in general. Thanks for the love. You really should get out more.

I notice that WiseDiva throws out the issue and rarely comes back into mix it up. I kinda miss Laney. As to the topic, I’ve observed first-hand confident women become timid because of over-bearing significant others, and men becoming more profound in their use of profanity after being involved with women who start most every sentence with the S word–and in both cases they deny that its unhealthy or that they have a problem.

so far my size/weight has remained consistent so I’m a big off season shopper. it’s like getting two thrills. the thrill of the bargain when you buy it and the thrill when you rediscover it next season. last weekend when I was pulling out my fall sweaters etc. I was pleasantly surprised at some of the stuff I’d stockpiled since last year. the shoes I bought last weekend were summer shoes. I just took them home and shelved them. I’ll likely forget about them before sandal season returns but, like I said, it will be a nice little surprise to re-discover them next year.

@ Blackfoote..I just got this old joke this morning about this very thing..men going shopping with the wife.. its long..but I have diplomatic immunity from blog tickets.

RETIRED/BORED HUSBAND

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Target.

Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women – she loves to browse.

Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Target:

Dear Mrs. Harris,

Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behaviour and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Harris, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras:

1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people’s carts when they weren’t looking.

2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women’s restroom.

4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, ‘Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away’. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money.

5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway

6. August 14: Moved a ‘CAUTION – WET FLOOR’ sign to a carpeted area.

7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he’d invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.

8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, ‘Why can’t you people just leave me alone?’ EMTs were called.

9.. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.

10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.

11. October 3: Darted around the Store suspiciously while loudly humming the ‘ Mission Impossible’ theme.

12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his ‘Madonna look’ by using different sizes of funnels on his chest.

13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, he yelled ‘PICK ME! PICK ME!’

14. October 22: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a
fetal position and screamed ‘OH NO! IT’S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!’

15. Took a box of condoms to the check out clerk and asked where the fitting room was?

And last, but not least:

16. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, and then yelled very loudly, ‘Hey! There’s no toilet paper in here.’One of the clerks passed out.

Kym – I agree Rahm was a political Thug no doubt about it. Obama needs a bad guy to speak on and handle the behind the scenes dirty work. It is getting done but you gotta have a FU man. Bush had Cheney and Rummy.

I’ll believe complete troop withdrawal when I see it. US Troop strength in Iraq has been steadily declining, but buildups in Afghanistan make up for it — and that’s where all the terrorists were/have been/are, they only went into Iraq because we ousted Saddam Hussein, and were there is such significant strength that we attracted them.

Troops aren’t scheduled to be out of Afghanistan until 2014, and I’ll believe that when I see it.

The topic thing actually happened to me — sweetie actually wanted me to gain some weight, what, never eat pizza, no burgers, no ice cream?! 18 months and 50 lbs later, I gained an ailment with my foot and was freakin fat. I’m 40 lbs down from that now, I’ll drop another 5 — and, maybe just 1 slice of pizza, no burger joints period, and no ice cream. The more of that junk you eat, the more of it you crave.

Purp — No, I grew up baptist. Was brainwashed pretty much from birth. I actually got “saved” when I was, like, 8 or so. By the time I was about 11 or 12, I think I had pretty much realized it was all BS.

Because nothing carnal will be going on. Everything will be spirtual. No point in me hoping to get some and it ain’t even happening there. Given the two choices carnal or no, hell just ain’t on my agenda.

“You don’t even know your head from tail at 12. How could you make an irrational decision like that. “

C — I guess from my perspective the irrational decision would have been to willfully suspend logic & critical thinking in favor of blind faith. I don’t know… all I can tell you is by 11 or 12 I had come to the realization that what was being taught was, shall we say, highly implausible. And nothing I’ve seen / heard / experienced since has done anything but reinforce that view.

Celisea

Purp – Yes I know.

Swiss – Everything with God and as it relates to faith will be intangible. If you’re waiting to see something tangible it ain’t happening. But to feel, if you got “saved” you should have felt something that will leave you “believing the rest of your days. Maybe you didn’t get “saved.” Cause if you did, trust me you would know. The spirit cannot be seen but it’s a force that controls you and you can feel it…yes indeed.

Okay bye for real…I’m waiting on someone that’s checking on a package so I’m still sitting here…but really I’m gone…lol

While working in a small three person office I took on the habit of drinking coffee, because everyone in the office drank coffee. No experience w/bad habits during a relationship, however, in my love life breaking up with someone has induced some unhealthy habits. I can remember picking up cigarettes after not smoking for seven years during a painful breakup! Now the relationship is over. I’m happily settled in a new healthy relationship for 3 years and JUST stopped smoking 7 days ago. Go figure, mad/hurt by you and hurt me….how’s that for no logic!
