First Dates: Clothes and Conversations

One of my guy friends had a first date with a young lady last weekend. He met her at a religious function so he was a bit taken aback at how she was when they went out. Apparently, she was dressed provocatively, something he thought inappropriate for someone her age (ouch?), especially on a first date.

He went on describe the way she used profanity, made several sexual remarks, and pretty much made him blush. Admittedly, my friend is super conservative and in my opinion high strung. However, the fact that he expected someone he met at a religious function to behave in a certain way, isn’t completely unreasonable. At the same time, are first date impressions reliable?

I do have to wonder, though, if we often meet people and have some preconceived ideas of how they should act or behave. Was the young lady projecting one image, yet behaved in a way that contradicted that? Perhaps, she was. However, should she get ruled out by the first date clothes and conversation?

Do you think we should judge a book by its cover and the first few pages of the book? If you were bothered the way someone behaved on the first date, do you grant a second one?

Do you ever think about the way dress on a first date? Are you careful about what you discuss or talk about?

So is she supposed to dress like Little House on the Prairie just because she goes to church? I don’t think she’s being misleading. Your attire changes based on the occasion. The way you dress for church is often different than how you dress for a date. I think Wise’s friend is the one with the hang-up. He’s projecting his own limited idea of “church girl” onto her. He should do her a favor and cut her loose.

Sounds like the real question here is if the girl is just going to church to self-cleanse her non-church lifestyle/image? I’m just sayin’…

Her age? Unless she’s a child, she’s more than welcome to dress how she wants. And church isn’t quite what it used to be anymore. Your friend is the problem. Have him send her my way. She sounds interesting.

As for your first date questions, I’m a donkey most of the time. I haven’t dated in years – not worth it trying to pretend I’m not.

Good morning, all.

Maybe Wise’s friend is a little “high strung” and what he thought was provacative, the girl thought was sexy. But the real issue for me is not the clothes, it’s the conversation. I know a lot of bloggers will disagree with me, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect someone you meet at church to conduct themselves a certain way (i.e. not cursing like a sailor and finding sexual innuendo in every statement). And I’d imagine she was just as disappointed and probably went home and told her girlfriends he was stuffy and uptight.

If I were either one of them, I’d make this first date the last.

Good morning.

He’s somewhat at fault to think because he met someone at a church function she’s a prude and dresses like a nun. Nothing wrong with him being turned off because of the cussing, but like ITL says, what he thought was provocative may have been sexy in her eyes. However, pretty sure she spoke with him enough before he asked her out to gauge his staunciness, his ultra conservative mindset, etc.

Oh, sexual remarks should not be made on a first date. JMO

Yes, I’m concerned about how I dress on a first date. I dress for myself, the tone of the evening, and venue. Don’t want to wear spike heels to a picnic.

We may not turn “red” in the face, but you can tell when we are blushing. The shyness comes across in the eyes, we hem and haw, you can feel the uncomfortableness. Blushing doesn’t necessarily rests on one’s face turning red!!!

Every time I leave my house, I want to look impeccable. Even if I’m going to the grocery store for milk. That doesn’t mean always wearing expensive clothes, either.

Also, I’ve got one word for ANYONE who uses profanity on a first date: Classless.

Ok now, we all know that the church is chocked full of people living double lives…Plenty of first pew women doing the “Wobble” and adding their own little freak moves at Compound on Saturday night,……The fact that he is claiming to be surprised is …well…… Funny to me……

My closest friend joined a group called “Equally Yoked”…a dating service where Christian singles met and dated other Christian singles who took their religion very seriously. He started dating this lady who had more curves than that highway in California running along the coast. The first evening out she wanted to play some “dirty word” game. The second night out, she goes into the bedroom and comes out with an outfit on that would make dancer at the Gold Club proud. From the first date it was not “if” but “when” and how freaky.

His take was that no matter what the venue, crazies find their way in. Not all, but you will run into some.

At the end of the day, dating is a screening process…we look, evaluate, and decide. For a man though, sometimes the difficult part is when the lady wants to right then, and you are stuck with the dilemma of, “I’m not exactly ready for this, but I don’t want her to think I’m light in the sandals”.

Not sure what the issue is — proper attire for the occasion.
On the church note – have you seen how some of the churched up gospel singing women dress. Ok then.
IMHO, some of the most sexually open down for the get down women I’ve met online had profiles that started with how much they love the Lord etc.
Yes, they need to be as equally stroked as the next woman.

HiYas!

i set my expectations on how one dresses and behaves based more on age than how or where we met. i would just find it tacky for a 40-50 something to overexpose themselves and use explicit language. those habits are best left behind in our 20s.

having said that you should most certainly expect to find some crude, freaky folk at church. as much as any club, really.

@Leggs – for real on BPM and BS, 7 out of 10 start with that refrain. And then with their uptight demand that any fella even saying hello must love the Lord and be ready to escort her to the chosen place of worship and regularly attend services.
Now here’s the kicker — wait for it — moving onto the profile photos which show same said woman stretched out provocatively in various poses in the bedroom, leaning over counters, and pushing up against the walls with the come get me look.
Well the good book does say that you should render the marital due LOL

I know that many on this blog have bad experiences from Internet dating sites, but one of the reasons I like them is that if one waits a bit and communicates a bit by email, BEFORE asking the “what a knockout” out, one can do a little bit of screening. The pictures give the “possible” looks, but if one is paying attention to the emails and a phone call or two, one can cut some of the nutcases out before investing an evening. Not a perfect science, some slip thru and you probably miss some good ones occasionally…but it is all in the screening.

Morning All!

Here are my opinions on topic:

1. It’s amazing how some otherwise intelligent people do not get that a person’s church or work style of dress and persona may be quite different than what they are when dating/hanging out! I remember early after college, I came to work at a bank dressed extremely conservative and professional and my attitude was pleasant but all business. I made a few cool friends and we hit up a few happy hours after work and clubs on the weekend. A few were taken aback when I actually ordered an alcoholic beverage at happy hour! And I came to the club dressed classy but fun & sexy! Duh!!! Same goes with church! Just because you met someone at church, don’t think their clothing and persona are going to stay at church once they leave! Yes, I would expect their general moral makeup to reflect that they are at least listening and learning at church, but beyond that – sounds like dude is probably a stick-in-the-mud!!!

2. Again, dude is probably a dud. While I don’t condone cursing every other word or dressing like a skank, I bet he exaggerated the whole thing. I’m sure he’ll be able to find an Amish woman that will fit the bill!

3. Yeah, if the first date was THAT bad to you, why do you need to plan a 2nd? That’s that tired “give him/her a chance” mess when you know coming out of the gate it’s not going to work. Why waste each other’s time? But you have to go with your gut – if you think a person was just nervous and got off to a rough start but you sense they are still a cool person worth getting to know, by all means, give it another shot!

You know people go to church looking for that “Good Church Girl or Guy”! But sadly you are misinformed about “holy folks”. Exiled – Part of me agrees with you. But I’m taking into account that Wise said he’s “super conservative”. Which means he may have been exaggerating the whole thing. What’s provocative to him might just be cute & figure-flattering to most of us. And unless she’s dropping f-bombs, she might have let h– or da— slip out of nervousness.

I went on a blind date once my friends set up with a super-religious dude. Now I know how to dress and I don’t normally use profanity unless I’m in road-rage & by myself! :) But I did order 1 glass of wine, which to him was a no-no since he didn’t drink and didn’t want a lady who did. Oh well!

BMW – I find most super-holy to be the most judgemental folks you’ll ever meet. And a lot have, as my mom used to say, done everthing they are big enough to do, and that’s all caught up with them. So they gotta make it right with God and suddenly everybody around them is a heathen!

Those that are truly spiritual and walk the walk, do so without having to advertise the fact to everyone. They just are. Their life and how they live it and treat others shows their faith. They don’t have to boast about it or put others down. They are the type one should be seeking if that’s whats important in a mate.

Provocative dress is counter to a Christian ethic, check Timothy 2:9. Deuteronomy states that for a woman to wear men’s clothing or a man to wear women’s clothing is an abomination unto the Lord. Do I personally care what someone wears? Not so much, but the getups a bunch of chicks show up wearing in the corporate workplace causes me some eye rolls. On one hand, cocktail dresses; on the other hand, flip flops and ready for a picnic. Men are often dressed like slobs. It’s a bit appalling, but I’m like, what do I care really? They just make me look better, as far as being appropriately dressed goes.

Vulgar language is what it is. If you don’t like it, then avoid people who use it. If a person professes to be Christian but is vulgar and profane in a constant way, talk to them about it. Chances are, they’d rather not be inconsistent with their beliefs.

Purple – I was raised going to church regularly. We were not super-holy, but it was a part of our lives and a very positive part I might add. We did and do a lot for the surrounding community and the elderly and the children, especially those less fortunate.

I visit other churches from time to time with my friends. I was going thru a rough time in my life once and visited a buddy’s church that was very popular. It was like a meat market! Granted there were some handsome men there, but that was not where my head was at the time. I was so irritated and mad at myself because I knew that church had a rep for being like that. Morning,

I see this is as yet another opportunity to bash church folks. It’s equally judgemental to believe all church folks are hypocrites. It’s self justification to be happy when you see “so called” church folks doing what you do. There is no difference. If they’re doing what you do and go to church and if you’re doing what they do and don’t who’s to say who is better or better off. How about we leave the judging to God. Really though I wonder when folks will get it…..CHURCH IS FOR SINNERS. So if it’s the wh@re, the pimp, the prostitute, the freak, the liar, the robber, the killer, the woman that swears like a sailor that’s all found at church…all I can say is yaaaaah. No better place to be for getting it right. At least they aren’t all of the aforementioned and NOT going to church. It takes a lifetime to walk the walk. In doing how about we learn and understand the hills the valleys the highs the lows and ups and downs, the stumbles yet getting back up. I tell you, most judgemental folks are the ones that don’t go to church and mad at the folks that do.

Blackfoote – If I gotta explain what “being a lady” means then….. All I can say is it’s not some uptight chick with her shirt buttoned to her ears that don’t know how to lean back and have a nice time. You don’t have to go way left and ho it out to prove otherwise either.

Not trying to be difficult but if you asked 10 guys or 10 girls what is a lady and/or a gentleman you’d prolly get 6-7 different answers. I’m sure you’ll hear a few catchphrases and talking points but Nowadays it really is subjective. Does a lady go to happy hour and have a margarita? Does a gentleman send you a text from time to time? I’m sure some of us here on the blog would think not while others don’t see a problem with it. Once again i think its one of those know your lane and stick to it.

Willie D, I agree. I often wonder what happened to men being men and ladies knowing they are ladies. I am really trying not to go deep but I think men being out of place in the “home”, household business, bedroom, workplace, has just caused all sorts of damage. I am not saying this in a male dominate kind of way but I hope you understand.

Willie Dynamite

PR- understood. Then again your idea of what is a man or lady may differ from mine. Doesn’t make either right or wrong except to us. Some ladies may take exception and to them rightly so to yours and mine definition of a Lady. But i do get what you are saying and as a whole the Lady/Gentleman concept has taken a hit over the past few generations.

Sort of on the current topic, my lady friend was telling me she has a guy working for her who tries to be a player, but in doing so, is the most “metro-sexual” guy she has ever met. At the end of the day, I am sure he appeals to some, and is a complete turnoff to others My point is that “one size does not fit all”. There are guys who want the totally uptight female “ladies”, there are those who want their lady to be a piece of jewelry on their arm and look like they just walked out of Glamour Shots…and there are those like me, who like the wholesome, girl next door type. with a witty, even wicked personality, who look equally at home in a black sheath and stilettos, or wearing jeans and walking in a field.

My choice isn’t better than yours, or the uptight dude’s…just personal taste.
To each his own.

ITL — I won’t be at the dome — I’ll be at home with the game on both big screens, burgers & brats on the grill, and booze in both hands.

Man, I tell you, I’m always cautiously optimistic before every season, but this year, I really have no idea how this season will unfold. I wouldn’t be shocked to see us around .500 again but I also wouldn’t be shocked if we ran the table. Our season will go as our defense goes, though. I’m hopeful for some major improvement there, but I’ll have to see it to believe it.

Here’s hoping we spank those little pony azzes like we did the last time they came south! :-D GO DAWGS!

I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much for this year; I’d rather be pleasantly surprised than bitterly disappointed. That said, though, I’ve heard some good things. And, while I would not be shocked at a .500 season, there are some folks predicting that we just might be the team to beat in the SEC east.

Man, that was a great game in 2005. It was hot as blue blazes, but a great game. And, I managed to pick up some beer pong pointers from the tailgaters next to us. :)

The NFL is going to have to wait for the fan base to come back up to par. The lockout did them in for a lot of people, once the season gets rolling the majority will be back. They unfortunately lost some fans for good. On the Falcons I don’t know what to expect this year, they have a hard schedule and if they keep trying to do something they can’t and don’t make adjustments the season can be lost.

See that’s a little bit too daisy duked. Lower the shorts just a hint where it’s alllllmost there but you can’t see the upper back thigh crease. Booty shorts but not quite.

Can’t show that cause Imma lady  Oh and not say anybody that shows the crease ain’t a lady….let me just throw that in there :)

When I was in a Public Speaking course in college, I had a professor who said something that has stayed with me all these years. He said that “a speech is like a mini-skirt. It should be long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to keep your interest”. I suspect that many things, including apparel, would fall in to this category.

Similar subject, and even though I have to admit I like the look for some ladies who have been nice enough to have modeled just for me, thongs look dayum uncomfortable. Not entirely sure what the point is. Now a nice pair of french cut VCs look comfortable AND sexy…but a string up your butt?

RandyT – I’m with you on the thong thing. Wore them years ago. Comfort, comfort, sexy, comfort. I like soft, lacy, soft colored panties. Black (I know I have a gazillion black panties), brown, beige, taupe, peach, pink, etc. I think I have a pair of lime green but not too fond, then they ain’t comfortable. I have white but I NEVER wear white panties. Same with bras…soft colors and no whites.

Celisea, u know I am just talkin, nothin wrong wit showing a lil thigh, but everybody better be dressed age appropriate. Every 5 years, what you consider daisy dukes should drop about a inch

20=lil bit of dark, cuff or shavings on edge
25=lil dark, but an actual cuff on them
30= drop down, no dark, definite cuff
35= tricky, depend on the lady, can possibly stay high, but mid thigh works
40= baby, I know you still got it, but don’t flaunt it
45=see 40
50= hell if still look that good rise em back up an inch
55= see 50
60= pull dayum short down, you 60, matter of fact put some coolocks(sp) on

Leggs

August 24th, 2011

On the subject of boxers & jorts, that reminds me of a story from college. So, I bought a few pairs of ratty jeans from a 2nd hand store (well, the hipsters call it “vintage” — but it’s f#cking 2nd hand) downtown with holes all in them. One of the pairs had a rather large hole in the crotch-al region, but since I work baggy boxers, too, it didn’t really reveal anything. Except that I also had one pair of boxers with a giant hole in the ol’ crotch-al region. I just had to make sure I didn’t wear both those jeans and those boxers at the same time.

So, one day, I’m waiting on the but & it was running especially late this particular day, so I sat down on the sidewalk & waited. After about 5 minutes I looked down & noticed that I had forgotten & worn both the holey jeans & holey boxers, and my junk was in plain view. I looked up & there were about 5 chicks standing around me who all turned their heads away quickly as I looked around.
