Is living together like marriage?

One of my friends recently broke up with her long term boyfriend. They had been living together for years and she is having a hard time with the break up.

She said that they had merged their lives so much, it feels like she is going through a divorce. From finances to owning a pet together, untangling their lives is pretty painful.

While I won’t take away from her pain, I wondered if leaving a live-in situation could be compared to a marriage. Is living together that much like a marriage?

Does it have the same pros and cons? When a couple is “playing house” are they enjoying the benefits of marriage without the big commitment?

Oh, and tossing a $100 bill in the air definitely doesn’t fit the category of “making it rain!”

I don’t think I would have done the $100 scramble. More out of skepticism than anything else. Probably would have given him two cents worth for doing so…but I understand, it was all in fun.

@SC ~ there was no scramble. We were all bunched together. All I had to do was raise up out my seat a little and catch it!

If marriage didn’t mean anything why is our “gay” population making such a big deal about it?
I’ve been married 24 years. In any long term relationship one will have ups and downs. If you have the “piece of paper” I think when you hit the tough times it helps you to stop and think before you throw in the towel. I’ve been around for a while and it seems to me that when we lost our “traditional values” we brought on a whole lot of problems. So many children being raised by single parents is not a good thing I don’t care what kind of spin you put on it.

Am I the only person that thought that parts of the interview seemed staged? Like maybe he agreed to talk about anything except EL? Because the reactions they had when the question was asked seemed a bit much.

Also…how did they get such good footage of the studio and his music and all that if there was not some sort of cooperation?

After a ten year living arrangement ended, I learned the difference. I needed the constant support and contact a divorced woman receives at the end of her marriage. I needed the time to process and untangle the many threads a woman works through during the separation and divorce process. A former husband exists – a former roommate does not. He counts for nothing to the world and you are expected to “get over it.” He did exist. He has a name. This was an unrecognized, unsupported divorce. I wouldn’t do it again.

Off topic – now, this is truly messed up.

Trying to get sober might have killed Amy Winehouse.

The beehived diva, infamous for her drug and booze intake, went cold turkey on her heavy drinking in the month before her death on Saturday – and family members think her decision was fatal.

“Abstinence gave her body such a fright, they thought it was eventually the cause of her death,” a family friend told British newspaper The Sun.
Her father, Mitch, believed “the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take,” the friend said.

Doctors had advised the 27-year-old “Rehab” singer to cut back gradually on her boozing, according to The Sun.

DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!

Slim – I believe that they had to stage it that way and not call it the interview/PR campaign that it actually is to get around terms of the settlement that does not allow him to talk.

To this day, I still remember the man always at the bus stop. I was in my mid 20’s at the time, but over time we got to talking while waiting on the bus. He looked so lonely. Came to find out he just moved into the apartment complex after a bad divorce. I don’t know the stats on which sex has a harder time with divorce, but that man looked liked he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. He looked lost and bewildered. I’ll never forget him.

Dorae- Marriage does mean something. However, it is necessary to seperate the subjective religious marriage from the legal marriage concept.

The legal marriage concept has a specific and wide array of enumerated rights and priviledges that go along with it. While the relationship portion is open to interpretation. The legal institution has very definitive implications and meaning.

We might disagree on what makes a house a home. However, there are specific legal implications to OWNING that home versus not owning it. I think the comparison is valid.

Just as there are legal and financial reasons TO get married, there are legal and financial reasons NOT to get married. Just look at the older people who are getting divorced to qualify for aid programs.

When it comes to the spiritual aspect, I can only think of reasons to support geting married and none to support not doing so.

SexyCool

And maybe I should have said the “religious” aspect. Because we all know that religion and spirituality are two different things.

Lilith isn’t Biblical, just mythology. Supposedly made from the earth as was Adam, she refused to be subservient and split and mated with Angel Samael. Also/alternatively, a demon, water spirit, night spirit, occult figure, etc. Folks have tried to tie her to Epic of Gilgamesh, but that’s been refuted and people tend to not accept even that anymore.
