Relationships: Do we improve for the next one?

You end one relationship and hopefully take some wisdom into the next one. What can we do avoid the same pitfalls that torpedoed the last relationship?

My friend Ben thinks his last relationship ended mainly because of his hectic new job that involved a lot of traveling. He believes that his new relationship will benefit from the lessons he learned about balancing work and home life.

Do you think you get to correct the wrong moves you made in past
relationships?

How have your dating and relationship experiences contributed to your personal growth?

By Wise Diva, Misadventures in Atlanta

If your current significant other met you years ago do you think you would have been a good match for them?

Monring and Happy Friday!!!

I have literally spent YEARS in and out of relationships, trying to learn from my mistakes and attempting to garner tidbits of wisdom from situations that sometimes make no sense. For me, I apply this to All of my interactions, not just relationships with women….

I sure hope so. If one doesn’t, then nothing was learned. You should learn something from all your relationship. How can you expect different results if you keep doing the same things?

Leggs – No problemo. I’ll be packing for my mini-trip to the countryside of BAMA to see my granny. All of the grandkids decided we should all go down to visit my grandma, throw some food on the grill, eat, drink and be merry. I’m sure she’ll appreciate it since not many of us get down there that often.

If my current situation doesn’t really work out, then i’ll probably just go the Bitter Black Woman route. I’m really going to have to pull from some past experiences to be able to drudge up enough anger to sustain me until my AARP years. Then the natural process of dementia should be enough to set me on a bitter-autopilot type situation where I’m just mad, angry and violent for no apparent reason other than because I can be. ;-)

@chink ~ that’s an important element of growth going into the next relationship. Leave as much baggage at the trash site as you possibly can. Sure, we all have baggage, but if you really look at it, a lot of it can be discarded simply if you want to rid yourself of it. People tend to hold on to their “bitterness” as a crutch to justify whatever stupid antics they’re about to engage in. Let it go and let yourself grow!

How have your dating and relationship experiences contributed to your personal growth?

Those experiences have contributed to my growth and maturity by simply living them and observing the interactions and outcomes. Unfortunately (or maybe not), the clearest view is often the one seen in retrospection. The real growth comes when you can look introspectively, particularly at the failures and missteps and not always assign blame to others and claim victimization when things fall apart.

Morning
I try to avoid making the same mistakes twice. Sometimes it still happens though. The mistake many people make is that they think “learning” from their mistakes simply means choosing better the next time. That’s only a part of it though. Truly learning means assessing your own faults and deficiencies, admitting that you contributed to the failure of the relationship. Once you acknowledge those things, then you can focus on self-improvement, which will inevitably lead to better selection.

Morning All and happy Friday!!

The biggest lesson I learned is how to choose better. Seemed each relationship was better than the last, until I met THE ONE.

I appreciate the experiences, the good and the not-so-great. It was/is all a part of this thing called life. As for making me the woman I am today, I give more credit to others in my life, like my parents and teachers and leaders in my community that I respected. My education, travels and other life experiences. I don’t recall any past dudes I dealt with romantically having that profound enough affect on me. I will say that my husband consistently makes me want to be BETTER. He makes me feel that whatever I dream of doing, he & the kids have my back. He makes me want to not just sit around dreaming, but actually get out there and DO! He said he doesn’t want any regrets and will not be content just sitting on the sidelines!

That’s inspiring!

Morning,

What I learned from my “last relationship” that he wasn’t as forthcoming and standup as portrayed.

What I learned over the years was to grow up, take accountability. That I was to blame sometimes. That I can’t change people. Truly understanding what things are tolerable versus just wanting to have my way. To understand that giving sometimes attributes to understanding “compromise” rather than feeling like I’m giving way to the other person. While I’ve never been one of much patience I had to learn that I’m not perfect either…which allowed much room for my own personal growth. That loving through thick and thin is not a bad thing but rather indicative of how much depth you can possess.

I agree that learning from your past relationship mistakes and making changes is wise and can help in future relationships. But I also believe that each relationship is different and you shouldn’t impose something you changed about yourself on someone if it doesn’t apply. Each relationship should be based on its own merits with perspectives from your life learning and experience. For instance, if you are selfish and learn that its not a good trait in a relationship, that’s great. But if you began dating a new person who turns out to be selfish, and you decide you’re going to be giving and selfless because in your last relationship you were a mess, then you may wind up feeling used in the new relationship. All relationships need a level of balance.

Morning All – (Is it still morning? Long Nights Short days).

My Wife didn’t and wouldn’t even try to date me when we first met. I was in full blown Wolf stage with teeth showing, horns up and heartless. She did however have the hookup with the Wizard and knew how to get my Heart. It wasn’t easy and she’ll be the first to tell you.

What i learned from previous relationships is that there was 1 constant, ME. Nothing good/bad happened unless I allowed it to happen. I took and continue to take 100% full responsibility. What I see in some (read most) people (Women especially because of the emotion syndrome) is they fail to take responsibility for any part of the demise. Its easy to blame to the other person. Afterall aren’t most of us perfect. I hate to bring up Steven Q. but I will say after a certain age and the bitterness sets in the failure to accept some of the blame is a YOU problem. There is a very remote chance that EVERY relationship you’ve been in and failed has been the other persons fault (yeah right). Either YOU are choosing wrong or YOU just aren’t all that YOU think you are.

Keep it simple. I’m not a church-goer (I’m actually Buddhist, but he’s on to something…) but I will quote Andy Stanley:
“Are you the person you’re looking for is looking for?”

For me, in all relationships – not just with my partner, it begins with me. Live with the mindset of the prayer of St. Francis. For it truly is in giving that we receive.

My relationship with myself has been the biggest influence. It has allowed me to take a look at those past relationships in a way that helps me grow.

If your current significant other met you years ago do you think you would have been a good match for them? HELL NO. Hahahaha! He wouldn’t have been a good one for me either. All in God’s time :)

Blackfoote, you are going to need some leather gloves and a hook. Smallest bale is 700lbs the largest is 1800lbs. LOL, a pitchfork wont cut it. We cut the fields go back and toss the hay so it will dry, go back flip it again so it will dry on the other side…than bale it..after that you have the ground crew that lifts them to the trailer then you have the trailer crew who stacks them on the trailer…from there you take it back to the barn and pass it back down to the ground crew who then stacks them in the barn. Good money to be made for the workers baling and for me after the bales are sold!

Blackfoote, good move. Equipment breaks from stress a lot…so a lot of long days and nights coming up. It’s a seasonal work and we have a lot of day laborers that sign on to help. But if they can’t cut it they get fired on the spot, some of them get mad because they don’t get hired….but if the aren’t over 180lbs they won’t be able to hack it. Little skinny guys try and get work though. This is by far one of the hardest jobs. I like to get out of the tractor and work with the ground crew sometimes for a few hours…great workout. I know why my dad always judged my sisters boyfriends by “Doesn’t look like he can bale much hay” LOL

Sexy Cool, we only hiring external employees doing cropping and bale season. People really don’t mess with us up here. That being said we have very few illegal immigrants. There are large Indian reservations and they come out and hold down most of the jobs. Also there are large Somali and Ethiopian contigents too, they are here legally as refugees. I can rarely use them because they are to small and frail to lift.

If you truly have some type of issue or personality trait that’s affecting your relationships, it’s probably not just affecting the romantic ones. By all means, work on it. Other than that, you are just not going to be a match with everyone, and that’s okay.

I had to learn to recognize men I could possibly get along with and not clash with. Stopped trying to make stuff work that clearly was not. Find someone I could accept for who he is and find someone that could do the same for me.

All of the above, I feel, is accepting responsibility. All I can do is work on the one constant – me. A large part of that is choosing well.

I’m trying to post the story about the funeral, but I think the Russian name can’t get past the filter. I’ve broken it up in various pleaces but can’t. I’m going to leave the name off. Just remember it was a woman.

A Russian woman died from a heart attack brought on by the shock of waking up at her own funeral.

Age 49, she was mistakenly declared deceased by doctors, the Daily Mail reported Friday. But she later woke up – in a coffin surrounded by sobbing relatives. She started screaming after realizing she was about to be buried alive.

She was rushed back to the hospital where she was declared dead — this time for real. Her husband was distraught.

“Her eyes fluttered and we immediately rushed her back to the hospital but she only lived for another 12 minutes,” he said. He told The Sun that he would sue the hospital.

“I am very angry and want answers. She wasn’t dead when they said she was and they could have saved her.” A spokesman at the hospital, also said officials were investigating.

As for the lockout….from the notices that I’ve recieved, there is a basic agreement on the split of the money that is agreed.

The holdup seems to be amongst owners. Owners like Jerry Jones want to make provisions that owners like Paul Brown (owner of the Bengals) actually spend money and not just be cheap to pocket the money that they are all supposed to share.

So, since it seems that there is less fighting between the players and owners, it looks like things are going to work out provided that there are no unforeseen problems. The only other issue that the players worry about is the unchecked power of Roger Goddell. So, that may be the only other holdup between the players and owners, but more issue exists amongs that owners themselves.

However, the NBA lockout seems imminent and I’ve heard from a few friends that we may not have a NBA season at all next year. Owners want a cap, and they want to weaken the NBA union.

Those 200 multiple choice questions can steal the small fragment of your brain left after the analytical reasoning section. Stand up slowly from the test…any rushed movements may leave you faint. Nontheless, you will do well!!!

Goddell can be commish as long as the owners want him and as long as he wants the job. Remember how long Pete Rozell had the job. Tagliabue had it around 18 years.

Willie Dyanmite….

I will get back at it later today. I know the law, it is just about practicing. I know that I missed some in that afternoon just due to mental fatigue. I got the grade analysis and I missed more after 3 pm than I did the rest of the test. The test is more about tricks than law.

The questions remind me of the trick I used to do as a kid:

I would hold out my right hand and say “see this hand”, then I would say “I got another one just like it” as I hit them with the left hand. The questions are similar in that they give a bunch a facts that would apply to one law or issue, but the question actually asks you another question.

BTW, the national average on the midterm was 85. I did 123.

Sometimes you just want to pass…you can perfect your skills and enhance your knowledge in the real world.

This is the goal. It is a test on minimal proficiency.

I know that you work in a law office. I am sure that you have run into attorney that made you wonder how did they pass that thing. As a paralegal, I ran into plenty of attorneys that made me think that if they passed, I can too.

Poppa Grande

It is a test on at least 18 different areas of law. The multiple choice test 6 different areas of law. Then we have to know GA’s distinctions. I can honestly say that I will know more law by the end of July than I will probably ever know in my life. Once I get in my area, I will forget about most of the other areas of law.

SexyC,

As with anyjob, the people can make the job good or not. However, I can honestly say that there were not many boring days as a paralegal. People are funny and they can get into some really peculiar situations. I am not just talking criminal situations, either.

One more thing, if you go the paralegal route, be prepare that everything that goes wrong will be your fault (whether it is or not). I got used to attorneys messing up and I had to fix things. Secretaries got it worse than me. Most attorneys are horrible in dealing with staff. They have to keep their cool around clients, but sometimes blow off steam to secretaries and paralegals. Attorneys wait to the last minute to get things filed because clients don’t want to incur cost until the have to do so.

It has been cool popping in. I think that I am actually going to take a nap.

Here is a quote that has kept me going:
“There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When
you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when
circumstance permit. When you’re committed to something,
you accept no excuses, only results.” – Art Turock
