Social networking and relationships don’t mix

I have lost count on the number of breakup stories I’ve heard involving Facebook, Twitter,  even LinkedIn! I don’t know how long it will take before people realize that social networking and romantic relationships can become problematic.

More people are finding each other on social networking and that is a great thing.  However, when it comes to maintaining a relationship…well, social networking can pretty much become a major source of a relationship drama.

When you are dating someone, do you add them to your friend’s list on your social networking sites?

Do you think it’s a good idea to find the online profiles of people you are interested  in dating?

My friend Greg thinks that it’s the same thing as taking your man or woman to a bar/club. You think it’s a good idea until someone says or does something that crosses the line.  Then you are wondering why you even bothered “taking sand to the beach” in the first place.

We agreed that the way you handle the situation says a lot about your relationship.  What do you think? If you are having arguments about something related to your online activity or social networking,  is it a sign of something deeper?

If your date or mate is using social networking in a way that makes you uncomfortable, how do you handle it?

abc, in a nut shell, loves his wife, thinks all other women are liars, musician who scowls at what is considered music now, pessimist and wants to know the how and why…with proof of everything presented to him.
See I know you. LOL

Yeah, that’s true, but that doesn’t really represent anything pertaining to relationship, does it? That’s just my substantiated opinion. Lots of people share that opinion.

Although, I wouldn’t say ‘naturally born’. Women learn this behavior from a very early age.

Raqi, I wish I knew you because I would ask you some questions just to see if my perceptions were correct. I would just want the answers nothing else. LOL

abc, what about the friendships that have formed and take place in person that exist because of this blog? Is that not social networking?

Raqi, I respect you as a lady and I would not ask you questions of that nature, no they are not perverted but they are nothing I should be asking a married woman about. I will just keep my thoughts smiling :)

I’m not going to go back to your original content because I’m blogging from my Blackberry and it would take FORever to find it.

But…I’m pretty sure you initially stated that you did not participate in any form of social media. I was simply pointing out that blogging can indeed be considered a form of social media.

I wouldn’t say I discount ALL music being made these days. In fact, I’d state (as I was taught in music school) that there’s something good in all music genres, and one must look for it. Thing is, for me, a lot of contemporary forms tend to, ahem, obscure their true goodness, and I have to really search for it!

I’m not a pessimist. I am a pragmatist. I’ll admit though, sometimes I’ll take up an arbitrary or contrary point of view just for the sake of debate. Not a very attractive attribute, I know.

From who? Their mommies or the men in their lives…daddies, brothers, etc. As much as men cheat and LOVE sex and most have to grow out (not really) the desire to act on having/loving/wanting several women, can you honestly say women are better liars? Heck that’s half the proof right there…being born a man. I don’t mean that in a bitter way…just saying

I suppose at least several of view have met in person, Raqi, and for you there’s that aspect… I’d never do that, though. It would kind of kill the merit of my participation in this, for me.

Raqi, they are not bad and not disrespectful, I just don’t think I should ask a married lady that type of stuff. :)

C, I’d say for sure that girls learn that behavior from the women in their lives.

I suppose you could characterize an online forum as social media then, SC. It’s a bit of a disconnect for me, though — this kind of thing is an idea that goes back 25 years.

I guess none of yall remember dial-up modems and Wildcat BBS etc., a world before the Internet? I remember reading a paper on http and html specifications around 1987-88. It sounded awesome, an endless repository of knowledge, linked and interlinked so that any one thought could be followed and researched; then the marketeers showed up.
