Social networking and relationships don’t mix

I have lost count on the number of breakup stories I’ve heard involving Facebook, Twitter,  even LinkedIn! I don’t know how long it will take before people realize that social networking and romantic relationships can become problematic.

More people are finding each other on social networking and that is a great thing.  However, when it comes to maintaining a relationship…well, social networking can pretty much become a major source of a relationship drama.

When you are dating someone, do you add them to your friend’s list on your social networking sites?

Do you think it’s a good idea to find the online profiles of people you are interested  in dating?

My friend Greg thinks that it’s the same thing as taking your man or woman to a bar/club. You think it’s a good idea until someone says or does something that crosses the line.  Then you are wondering why you even bothered “taking sand to the beach” in the first place.

We agreed that the way you handle the situation says a lot about your relationship.  What do you think? If you are having arguments about something related to your online activity or social networking,  is it a sign of something deeper?

If your date or mate is using social networking in a way that makes you uncomfortable, how do you handle it?

You are absolutely correct, DreamsM. I’ve learned so much. And, to top things off, I like who I am and how I would never use a person like that. My word is all I have to offer, and my word is a good one!!

Leggs you know who gets on my nerves the worst? Those women in his family. Not the older women because they love him to pieces but those younger ones that are always trying to play on his sympathy with their sad sob stories.

When we move to where are most of them live (VA) they are going to find out there is a new Bytch in town and imma be cutting them off at the door steps, phone line and at the knees. (Celisea , see this is why I try to stay reading the bible. I need help keeping my bytchiness in check, help to stop using words like bytch. LOL)

Raqi Sometimes you have to be like the master who forgave his servant’s debt, but his servant didn’t forgive the debt of a fellow servant. So, the master had the first servant tortured until he could repay his debt. Torture those bytches…it’s biblical. lol

Leggs, what goes best with a southern fried chicken dinner? LOL

A pair brown 4” peep toe pumps with a beige linen belted wrap dress? Or a pair of 3-1/2”strappies with this cute little blue sleeveless number that I bought yesterday with money my boys gave me for Mother’s Day.

Yes I get dressed for dinner at home quite often. LOL

LOL Dreams and Leggs. I don’t like sticking my nose in my hubs business but I don’t like folks taking advantage of him because they know he just likes to help.

But I tell you he is getting to a point where the dams that hold back his anger is about to break. When it happens all imma say is “get ‘em baby”. LOL

As a relationship expert I have definitely seen how social media, especially fb, has influenced emotional infidelity and sexual infidelity. People feel safe talking to a “stranger” on-line (like telling someone on a plane whom you think you will never meet again your whole life story). Also – people can now connect with ex’s. Here are some very practical and do-able ways to insure you do not fall onto that very slippery slope of taking your on-line, innocent enough relationship and crossing the line over into emotional and sexual infidelity.
1. Tell your partner you have become “friends” with an ex
2. Let your partner see, and have access to what you write – hey, if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to hide
3. Avoid sharing confidences and secrets with these ex’s or new friends on-line – this will begin to emotionally pull you away from the intimacy you have in your current relationship and begins the descent down a very slippery slope.

Dr. Tublin, I don’t think there would be any discussion past point #1. How does one become “friends” with an ex? No matter the response, I would not listen.

I’m hesitant to characterize ‘blogs’, especially in the form of a forum such as the ones here at ajc.com, as social media. Social media indicates that there are social relationships of some kind formed as a result. A forum such as this one — not at all unlike those that first appeared on Wildcat BBS in the 80’s — don’t require anything in terms of social relationship. It’s nothing more than posting opinion, feedback and rebuttal. I don’t consider that I’ve formed any relationships here. Frankly, folks here know so little about me that there’s no way anyone could draw a line between my posts here and my person. I’m sure that for some that post here, that’s not the case, but for me it is.
