Sure about what you want?

Earlier this week, we talked about overlooking a certain type in dating. I started to think that part of the reason we overlook people is that we aren’t truly clear on what we want. We get this image in our heads of who we think we want in theory, but when that person shows up, would we feel the same way?

Bloomburg Businessweek sent me an article about the science behind Match.com. Actually, it’s the math behind it, specifically, algorithims: “Match.com tweaks its algorithms based on whom a user e-mails or checks out” So, you can see where this is headed right?

My favorite part of the article? To wit: “When people first sign up on Match.com they fill out a questionnaire. That’s where Thombre’s biggest challenge arises: Bad data. Users exaggerate their IQs and lowball their waistlines. They frequently discard their stated preferences. Match.com has found that 49 percent of men who insist on a woman who wants children actually chase prospective mates who don’t particularly care. “They will say, ‘I’m only interested in guys between the ages of 18 and 30,’” Thombre sighs. “The next thing you know they are e-mailing a 38-year-old.”

Oh and the best line ever: Behavior often conflicts with stated desires.

What are your thoughts? Do you ever notice how behavior conflicts with stated desires when it comes to who we are drawn to vs. who we say we want?

How sure are you when it comes to who and what you really want in a mate? Does your behavior “match”?

Happy Friday!

How about this for a matching criteria?

“Do you actually intend to reply to emails and not play games?”

I bet the answer to that for most women (if it were answered honestly) would be “No.”

I think you need to check your third paragraph there. You’re talking about 49 percent of men, and then all of a sudden you’re talking about “interested in guys”

@Reggie, you need to fill the preliminary cutoff before that, dearie. If not, you can go back to the boring, stiff women on this blog, diiscussing theor “respect” issues, checking whether or not you want to get married and their psycho-babble about deeper relationships and analytical diatribes. As for me, I’ll be dancing my a$$ off and checking out the fine, fine man at the bar before taking him home with me and making him forget about every single woman he’s ever been with or will get with afterwards. I’m in it to win it!

If you feel the stiff women here only have psycho-babble references to deeper relationships and crazy analytical diatribes, why do you keep reading, let alone commenting? @Leggs, Because it’s actually quite humorous reading all of the “other worldly” comments and how emotional and mentally traumatic situations are winding through the minds of some of the posters. Some keep it real, simplistic and the way it really is. The others lament those that do amd try to turn 1 +1 = 2 into some law of physics and relativity. No, I don’t stay on here for long. It just gives me a chuckle and starts my day off into thinking I’ve actually got a grip on things pretty well when I see what depths some of you will hash, rehash, misdirect and just creat things that really aren’t there. If they ARE there, then that’s a whole different personality problem all together. Have a great weekend, anyway, and make life a GREAT one because it can be if you let it.

Good day mates! Happy Friday, especially to the “stiff” women of the blog!!LOL!!

On topic – I think we all probably know the basics of what we want. The other stuff, we may not recognize until we see it. And sometimes, time and maturity cause us to seek things different from when we were younger. I think one has to be flexible though. Don’t be so rigid in what you say you want, leave it open for pleasant surprises. In fact, people are always criticizing those who have not narrowed down exactly what they want. They are just haters, they’ve put themselves in a box they are too scared to get out of!

I don’t think he really gives one rat’s azz about being president. Matter of fact, whether intentional or not, his stirring up the racist wack-jobs in the GOP base does nothing but help Obama in the general election. I could definitely relate to the article from the perspective of Thombre since professionally we do pretty much the same thing. They’re optimizing successful matches using mathematical modeling. Similar techniques are used to determine credit score, whether or not you get junk mail, whether milk should go next to cheese in the grocery store, what offers your cell phone company will give you (if any) when you threaten to leave. It’s pretty cool stuff actually.

To the point of the article, they model behavior instead of preferrences for the same reason that BestBuy doesn’t really use your application information to determine if you’re eligible for a BestBuy card…because they know everyone lies about their income on the application.

Come on, abc, I know you’re smarter than that. It didn’t take him 2 years to release his birth certificate. He released it — the legally valid short form, the one that is released as a matter of procedure by the state of Hawai’i for everyone requesting a birth certificate — back in 2008 during the campaign. It’s only a bunch of racist f__ks for whom that wasn’t good enough. John McCain was born on a military installation in the Panama Canal Zone — not on US soil — so where were the “birthers” on that one?

Gitmo is open, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is still in place, we’re still in Afghanistan, on and on — these were Obama campaign planks, and Republican opposition isn’t the reason why they’re not accomplished. The Health Bill is the major opposition Obama has faced, and it’s a bloated, misunderstood, not well thought-out piece of legislation that will be, and should be, repealed. Requiring people to purchase insurance is equivalent to a health tax, and if you’ve read any of Cynthia Tucker’s columns lately, the death panel stuff is turning into mainstream liberal thought.

If Obama had cared to quell the birther controversy, all he had to do was produce an appropriate birth certificate as conclusive proof. How can that really be that hard to do? Citizens were asking for it, and he refused (or was unable to do so? really?) for 2 years, until a reality show star and real estate mogul with very odd hair made a big stink in the press about it. In a circus atmosphere like that, the clowns obscure the elephants.

Regarding health care, it has always been true that if you can afford it, you’ll get the best available in the world, and if you can’t, you get old, sick and die. That’s life. There isn’t a cure for that. The effort being put forth in that area is wasted effort. Instead, we should be getting out of wars, which would have the biggest possible impact on spending.

I suppose I’m an isolationist. I figure messing around with sovereign nations, no matter how despotic their leadership, shouldn’t be such a major activity of American government. Libya, Egypt, Afghanistan, Iraq… none of our business. We didn’t go in there to fight terrorism — the terrorists didn’t arrive in Iraq until our armies showed up.

That last part as actually only true in the US, or in 3rd-world countries. Every other modern, industrialized nation has some form of national health care.

And, don’t kid yourself. It’s not like we don’t already have subsidized care for the uninsured. It’s just that currently, all we subsidize is life or death emergency care — the least effective and most expensive kind of care. Maybe if we just forked over some $$ for preventative care up front, we might avoid greater costs later and see better results.

Preventative care can’t be mandated. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. You can lead a person to the tub, but you can’t make them take a bath. You can’t change diets, nor any personal habits, by government mandate.

The certificate previously submitted was created by request, not a notarized copy of an original. Are you going to tell me anyone can’t get a notarized copy of their own birth certificate if they feel like doing it? Especially the President of the United States? It’s not a matter of proof of where he was born, to me. It’s a matter of refusing to answer questions raised by the citizenry. I figure that’s just as bogus as people insisting he was born on Mars.

Dreams — And my favorite part about this whole, stupid, “birther” BS is that the question of where he was born is quite possibly moot, anyway.

The constitution does not say that one must be born within the borders of the US to be eligible for the office of president. It says one must be a “natural born” citizen, but never explicitly defines exactly what that means. There have been a number of legal opinions over the years, but the issue has never been settled definitively.

If you take it to strictly mean that you must have been born in the US, then any child of military parents born overseas would be ineligible — which seems a bit silly, really.

If you take the more reasonable meaning of having been a citizen at the time of birth, then it wouldn’t matter if Obama had been born on the moon. He was born to a US citizen mother, therefore he was “born” a US citizen himself.

Except that it wasn’t the “citizenry” who wanted “better proof” — it was a small segment of wing-nuts who will never be satisfied by any amount “proof” he may offer. July 2009: Brendan Nylan poll says 53% of the South and 58% of all Republicans have doubts or flat-out don’t believe Obama about his birthplace;
A poll of southerners and a poll of Republicans is CLEARLY a biased sample and not representative of the “citizenry” as a whole. Such a sample would certainly fail a simple t-test. Not statistically valid.

July 2009: AOL poll shows that 81% think Obama should cough up a real birth certificate in an AOL poll;
81% of whom? Additionally, a poll asking if a person thinks the president should produce his birth certificate is different than asking if a person believes that the president was born in the US. There a many people who believed the president was born in the US who also wanted him to produce his birth certificate, for no other reason than to put a sock in the mouths of nay-sayers.

August 2010, CNN poll says 25% doubt Obama’s birthplace.
Again, 25% of whom? So, we have 53% of southerners, 58% of republicans, 81% of an unspecified demographic responding to an ambiguous question, and 25% of another unspecified population. Certainly all of these different metrics cannot be addressing the question of his birthplace. If they are, then the statistical variability ranges from 25% to 81%, hardly believeable! That’s like saying the height of a suspected criminal is between 5′1″ and 6′7″; weight between 140lbs and 320lbs; hair grey, brown, blond, or redhead; wearing a blue or white or black or green or pink trenchcoat, or maybe a sweater.

You can’t be reasoned out of something you weren’t reasoned into.

Well, Obama’s election margin was something like 52-53% for, 47-48% not for him; I’d actually figure that to have slid against him since he took office. As far as his birthplace, who knows? The things illustrates to me that a lot of people will believe what they want to believe, in spite of whatever.

I believe I’ll pick up some Newcastle on the way home.
