Dating on the other side of the tracks?

There was a time when you wouldn’t think of dating outside your socioeconomic class.  According to a lot of people, this is still an issue in modern day dating.  There are still mothers that ask their sons, “Who are her people? What do they do?, ” and if he doesn’t respond with an acceptable profession that signifies affluent wealthy family? Well, that is where things get a little tricky.

Whether you are from a modest, working class family or a wealthy, powerful one, when you make a decision to break from tradition, you have to be prepared for the backlash.  A lot of couples realize they are not built for this and others become closer because of it.  Do you think our upbringing and our socioeconomic status is an issue in your dating life?

Have you ever dated someone that seemed to come from a completely different world than you?  Perhaps you are used to down home, unpretentious surroundings (like me!)  and you met someone who spent their childhood in boarding schools and mansions.  Do you think it could work?

When we talked about family disapproving of the person you were dating, I wondered how this situation would play out once things got to be serious.  Once the family has come to accept your mate, how do you think the cultural and social differences would impact your relationship?

Do you think single people still have to contend with “dating from the wrong side of the track” or has society moved beyond that school of thought?

Men stick to what works and some woman ruined for some others.

Purple – I disagree. Men do what works as the situation calls. The approach to someone they respect is very different from the ones they don’t. A true man of character treats ALL with respect and doesn’t just do what he think he can get away with, but that’s another subject. And every tub sits on it’s own bottom – those women that fell for the okie doke ruined things FOR THEMSELVES!

honestly Swiss, I agree that corporate ‘officers, CEOs etc.) salaries have gotten obscene. I don’t think that is fair to the shareholders or the public who are absorbing this. I also agree that bailing out corporations (and states, and frankly darn near anyone) is BS. But for corporate taxes, I would comment though that sometimes corporations get an unfair shot from the Michael Moore’s of this world because of the one question they never seem to ask…”who is Exxon” (for example) is ‘he’ some evil rich ba$tard that screws everyone”? Frankly ‘he’ is most of us who have a 401K, he is the shareholders who want to profit in some way from the risk taken with their investments, ‘he’ is a ‘union’ of investors that includes most people.

Just one caveat…when your politicians talk about taxing those obscene profits of these evil large corporations, who is really getting taxed? I’ll give you a hint, expenses get passed through, and tax is an expense just like any other expense. It is that poor working stiff that is getting nailed at the gas pump…not big bad Exxon. (and for the record, I am no fan of Exxon…just using them as an example). Don’t believe all you hear on MSNBC (or Fox)…they have an agenda.

I’ll say this,

Anybody that uses the phrase “free market” without using the “invisible hand” hasn’t read Smith and that person is merely parroting a phrase they’ve heard from someone else

kimmie, as a man I am saying men do what works to get their desired results and if it worked before they will stick to it. If his result was a one night slump and bump he will do what worked to get it the first time. I am saying some woman messed it up for others to mean that some woman fell for the slum and bump spill now said guys is trying it on other women until he finds one that it will work on again.

Randy — I agree with you there… when I’m referring to tax rates, I’m specifically referring to the individual tax rate — and the inability to raise the top rate by 3% (GASP! Socialism!), also known as the same rate as we had pre-W. For corporate tax rates, I’m fine with offering incentives for those that actually create jobs here as opposed to India, etc.

Neal You’re right about one thing, corporations are all about profit. But capitalism doesn’t mean the complete lack of regulation. The corporate motivation is purely profit. That’s it. If it will increase the bottom line, they’ll do it (if allowed), no matter who or how many they have to f__k to do so. That’s why there has to be a good balance between free enterprise & reasonable regulation.

And, my stance is if you’re grimy like that then approach likewise grimy women. And, if you didn’t know if I’m grimy or not why take the chance in me finding out you are only to definitely not give you the time of day. Step respectfully at all times. Last comment, then back to dating, only to answer CBA.

Wages are usually lower or equal, but the people keep much less of what they make because most of what is paid as income goes back to social programs.
People have smaller, older ‘row houses’ that sometimes stay in families for generations, new housing is seldom noted and very expensive.

They have medical programs that pay for all services but that is somewhat different over there from the granite and ornate offices filled with millions of dollars of medical equipment we are used to. There are occasionally treatments that are withheld because someone in government deems it “experimental” and not “in the budget”. Most is “triage”, you wait in line (not in the offices although that too…I mean it is often a long wait until services are “approved”, and you are behind anyone who is perceieved to have a more urgent need, meaning you can wait from months to years for “non life-threatening” services or operations.

Doctors are somewhat limited because their earnings potential is contained so it is not as exciting a profession as here.
Dentists have mostly opted for ‘private practice’ because the national program pays so poorly, so one can wait a year and a half for basic dental services often (one of the reasons other than genetic for a lot of poor teeth there).

Is there an advantage to national healthcare…no question. One can argue that their ‘preventive medicine’ might be better because there are no financial barriers. The problem is that it isn’t the healthcare we know. It is, instead, long waits, probably less diagnostic services, more “pedestrian” care… A trade off, certainly, but would be a rude awakening for those of us who have good insurance.
