Dating on the other side of the tracks?

There was a time when you wouldn’t think of dating outside your socioeconomic class.  According to a lot of people, this is still an issue in modern day dating.  There are still mothers that ask their sons, “Who are her people? What do they do?, ” and if he doesn’t respond with an acceptable profession that signifies affluent wealthy family? Well, that is where things get a little tricky.

Whether you are from a modest, working class family or a wealthy, powerful one, when you make a decision to break from tradition, you have to be prepared for the backlash.  A lot of couples realize they are not built for this and others become closer because of it.  Do you think our upbringing and our socioeconomic status is an issue in your dating life?

Have you ever dated someone that seemed to come from a completely different world than you?  Perhaps you are used to down home, unpretentious surroundings (like me!)  and you met someone who spent their childhood in boarding schools and mansions.  Do you think it could work?

When we talked about family disapproving of the person you were dating, I wondered how this situation would play out once things got to be serious.  Once the family has come to accept your mate, how do you think the cultural and social differences would impact your relationship?

Do you think single people still have to contend with “dating from the wrong side of the track” or has society moved beyond that school of thought?

Sorry PR, that mess ain’t cool. Emailing and calling women in the same circle to see which one will bite? Having teenage kids and a divorcee = too old for that mess.

Purple/Leggs – He’s just being his sleazy self. He’s showing you and all the ladies up front what he’s all about. I actually respect him for that. The quality ladies, like you Leggs, don’t have to wonder or waste your time. He’s not your type, but to a different type of woman, he may be just what the doctor ordered.

I just don’t go for men that give off that type of aura. Like he’s licking his chops and drooling after you. Texting has made it easy for dudes to do that when they used to have to say it to your face or at the least on the phone. Whichever way, it always made me uncomfortable. But to each his own – and yeah, some go for it.

kimmie, I agree if you would have gotten that email/call he would have known after the first time that nothing was going to happen. But yet one of the ladies responded that he has been blowing her phone up. Hmmm, if he keeps calling..why hasn’t she made the pint clear?

Purple – You’re right, hopefully no man would go for wife-material like that.

And you are absolutely right about women not being honest with lady friends about such. I’ve had it happen in my circle of friends. It’s because they are embarassed. He’s not the type you show off to the friends and family and are proud to have people know you are with. He’s just somebody to mess around with. And she’s the same to him.

Randy — Again, I think we’re talking about two different classes of wealthy. Now, granted, to me, $89 million would be rich as f__k, but there are a select few — who control the vast majority of wealth in this country — for whom that is chump change — those who have more money than they, their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren — all the way down the line — could ever spend without ever having to work a day in their lives.

Oh, and I meant to say earlier, to further illustrate your point about athletes & wealth… 2010 payroll for the entire Atlanta Braves roster: $84 million. 2010 salary for CEO of Liberty Media (company that owns the Braves): $87 million. There’s rich, and then there’s rich:lol:

Purp is right, dudes don’t care about getting put on blast. That dude is acting off a principle that lots of dudes use: “act now, apologize later”. Basically, push the envelope and see if you get what you want. If you get called on it, just apologize and take a different approach.

kimmie, I have seen that with women as well but somehow the guy comes out as the bad person in it all. His approach sucks but he is who he is, if you lay down with dogs don’t be mad if you come up with fleas. But yet one of those women will bite, get hurt when he moves on to the next group and then paint him to be a scumbucket…when from “go” all he wanted and was about was the booty. LOL Moral to the story is, don’t have an email or cell phone. LOL j/k

Purple – In my example, neither really is a bad person. That is unless someone is cheating on a spouse. I’m not talking about that. I’m saying there is something about dude that makes her not want to be seen in the light of day with him. Nothing to brag about. His looks, his character, his rep, something. And she has hit rock bottom for being hard up enough to mess with him. No, she has no right to come up later about how he’s no good because EVERYBODY knew that, including her!

Neither come up smelling like a rose, but hey, they are grown and it’s a free country.

@ Im swiss…true. The 89 million was in the seventies. Factor in inflation and the number is pretty good. Also knew a pair of accountants (twin brothers) in Knoxville that worked for very low wages for a coal company for years, but were given stock in the company in lieu of salary. Sun oil bought that company out, again in the 70’s, for 240 million. They did well for their hard work.

Not sure how much wealth is still closely held, as you suggest. I probably ought to read all the way down in Forbes and not just the top 50 or so (Gates, Buffett, the Mexican who ran Telefundo de Mexico, or the guys at Google, Apple, Home Depot, and Facebook). I suspect the true answer lies somewhere between our views.

I know right…just plain stupid.

For you that are saying a dude like that cares nothing about being put on blast…it’s obvious by the lack of class he possess or or any upstanding type traits for that matter. Putting him on blast is more of a repellant for him to back off and carry that mess on to the next bunch….not to save or convert him, just want it to be known that I’m not the one… Putting on blast is more so that it’s crystal clear that I’m not rolling like that…not hoping he will shriek down and do better, just to carry that foolishness somewhere else.

But your joke about being mad because I’m worn out was funny.

“Hell y’all know Leggs wasn’t about to fall in that trap.” – Most definitely, Blackfoote. His approach was scummy at best, and the fact that he’s short w/a patch of hair on the top of his head (you know like those plastic dolls that had a wave of plastic hair at the top), is a turnoff.

Naw Dreams, that’s tasteless and disrespectful. And if you think doing something is just a casual move then I can only shake my head. There are plenty of dudes that moved on from relationships without formal “closure” and without getting as grimey as one can get. There’s still a difference.

@ swiss I don’t begrudge wealth. To clarify, I am trying to say that building wealth takes generations sometimes. My total inheritance, unless things change, will have been $123 from my grandmother’s estate…yet I have more than my parents ever did. I had a somewhat higher “launching pad” than they did. My children have a higher “launching pad” than I did, so hopefully they will build more. My grandchildren can hopefully leverage that even more. With the exception of “Royalty”, most wealth started somewhere with poverty and hard work.

Randy — I agree with you, except that economic policy should not be about what is fair, it should be about what is best for the entire economy. And to put it in overly-simplistic terms, having a few people with more money than they could ever spend (whether or not they “earned” it) while the vast majority of people are doing well just to get by is not good for the economy. Whether it’s fair or not, that imbalance needs to be lessened (via tax codes, regulation, whatever) or else we’re on the path to becoming a 3rd world country.

I’ve spent enough time overseas to see what eventually happens when you punish the successful to reward the “needy”. Most of the European community is sinking like a rock right now because of their social reforms. At the end of the day, economic success is directly related to production…not government programs.
