Are love letters extinct?

Do you remember the last time you received a love letter or poem? No? Me either! I recall when my boyfriend poured his heart out in a love letter and wrote poems about me…on paper. He didn’t tweet me, he didn’t send it on Facebook, and he definitely didn’t put it in a text.

How much romance can you inject into 140 characters, using emoticons, or those oh so annoying abbreviations ? The worst part is that a lot of people probably wouldn’t even know how to write a love letter these days, it’s like a lost art!

AJC’s Jill Vejnoska writes about the decline of the love letter in the digital age that will also appear in this week’s Sunday Paper.

My friends, if you do nothing else on Valentine’s day, you should suspend your normal “electronic” wooing habits and write a love letter. Seriously. It could be a throwback move that invokes feelings of nostalgia. You are pretty much guaranteed bonus points for making the effort.

It takes courage to put your emotions in a “four-paged letter” (remember that Aaliyah song?!) and that is why it is so endearing and heartwarming. Ah, the things we do for love, right? Are we too chicken to be that courageous again?

Have you ever put pen to paper in an effort to express your love for someone? Have you ever received a love letter?

Happy Friday!

Love Letters Extinct??

I can only speak for myself and write things all the time. It may not be 4 pages long, it may not even be more than a few lines, but i’m notorious for little little notes, poems, cards or what nots around for my SO. Matter of fact, I’ve even incorporated this very topic in with my ‘gift’ for this coming Hallmark Holiday.

Now if I were to answer the last time I got a love letter of sorts or anything handwritten, i’d say that was TOO DAYUM long ago. My bf in college used to write poetry and stuff just like me and he’d write me poems or letters. To me there is something about getting a letter or something that had the person actually sit down and put thoughtfulness into what they were wanting to convey. Everyone likes to get mail that doesn’t come with a Balance Due and Pay By Date on it. lol

Morning all –

I was all set to say it’s been a while since I got a love letter, but it hasn’t been. My ex was actually good at that sort of thing… he would leave me flowers and letters outside my garage… and as I was backing out in the morning, I would look over my shoulder and see a white envelope or a bouquet of flowers. Such a nice touch!

But before him, the love letters only existed between me and my HS sweetheart. We would right each other letters in class DAILY. I have two binders full of letters I still keep to this day. Everytime I go on a cleaning spree in my closet, I end up stopping to go through old pics, momentoes and his letters. Don’t get much done when I clean the closet.

That is me all the way…so don’t feel bad. I actually tried a few weeks ago and by the time I got done looking at old pics and stuff I had lost my desire to clean the closet. lol

Good Morning! I don’t believe it’s a lost art form. I personally enjoy expressing thoughts about someone through creative writing as that is something an artsy Libra will do!!!

Same sentiments…Slim/Ared~The momentoes will stop you dead in your tracks leaving you with an unaccomplished task for a reminiscing moment!

Good Morning,

I can’t remember the last time I got a love letter………………..maybe college

I definately remember passing notes daily in high school though :)

I have a huge bubble gum bucket full of notes passed on a daily basis in class between my girl friends and I. Those notes have everything from talking about a booger in the English teachers nose to what we were going to wear the next day.

Question: are all ya’ll little HS notes folded up in weird ways to make it as little as possible? lol

Good morning. Love this topic because I am a letter writer. I believe in sending “thank you” cards. I just mailed my mother a letter last week telling her how much I appreciated all her sacrifices rearing ME.

Now, have I received a love letter…NOPE. Have I ever sent on…YES.

Although we know love letters are more sentimental and heartfelt, do you feel that cards can be comparable to a love letter?

Hallmark and other greeting card companies now provide us with an array of expressive cards for those who maybe creatively challenged, who wants to send a card just because, or just don’t have time to pen that poem for a loved one but it expresses what they want to convey to that special someone. They are the cards that obviously say things that tells you that he/she didn’t randomly select it and there was much thought and time put into getting the right one. It lights up a sparkle in your eye!

@Slim~ Ask a teenager…they will refresh you on the art! I recall my 19yo having one of the infamous notes when she was in middle school…It brought back memories :)

Leggs – Not sure if you’re much of a reggae person but that reminds me of this song i fell in love with. It’s by Sizzla, called “Thank You Mama”. The first time I heard it, i was at a wedding in Orlando. The groom had this song playing when he had the dance with his mom. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place.

Thank u mama for the 9 months you carried me through
all the pain an’ sufferin’
No one knows the pressure you bare a just only you ;-)

Not so much on the love letters anymore, but I will stick a handwritten or store-bought card in TheDude’s laptop bag (for him to find when he gets to work) every so often.

(Matter of fact, this is a timely reminder for me to go card shopping.)

And yeah, Leggs, like you, I’m pretty big on writing thank you notes.

The challenge to finding the perfect card is finding one that is the most representative to your situation. A love letter, in my opinion, doesn’t have to be written to the nines and perfect. What is important is the fact that person sat down in an attempt to express what it is they feel.

Be careful with love letters. My high school sweetheart emailed me last week on face book to say that he was cleaning out some old things and came across love letters I wrote to him over 20 years ago. He commented that I should read some of the things I wrote. How embarrassing!!! Who knows what I wrote???

Sexycool – I do stuff like that too. When the SO was going out of town to go hunting, I had snuck and put a card in his bag. Too bad he found it before he even left the house when he went to put his phone charger in there. Cold Busted! lmao

My girlfriend and I left notes for each other depending on who woke up first to leave for work all the time…before we moved into together. Since then I nearly always get up before her so I leave one less often. She did leave before me yesterday (sick day for me) so I woke up to find one for the first time in a while. Very nice surprise!

Morning All!

I absolutely love writing! Last time I wrote a love letter was some time back when I was in a LDR. I actually ran across one I got back in 94 from Cali dude. He was good at stuff like that.

Leggs, my mother was big on thank you notes and she taught us as well. Whenever I send one out, usually to older people, they are extremely impressed. You would have thought I hung the moon!

This couple that attends my church invited me to a 100 Black Men event, as a date for their cousin that was in town, years ago. The event was Friday, I put the thank you note in the mail the next morning. The post office was especially efficient that day because they got it that same day! They came up to me in church the next day and told me they got it! They said they give away tickets to events all the time, but that I was the ONLY one that had ever written them a thank you note!

I think certain personality types are prone to writing love letters just like there is a certain type that prefers receiving them. One ex girlfriend of mine was very high maintenance in the “love letter/needing tangible expressions of love” department. My current girlfriend on the other hand isn’t big on the mushy trinkets, and finds them to be a bit suffocating. She prefers more face time with me.

Also, I think most relationships tend to naturally evolve past the “love letter” writing stage. As long as you keep doing basic maintenance to show how much you care, things will be fine for the most part.

Amred – What amazes me are those that are slim that didn’t know they were pregnant! I could see it better if you were extremely overweight. One lady worked out all the time, but she said she hardly ever got a period so when she didn’t have one for awhile it was no big deal. But she was slim! smh

Morning,

I don’t think love letters are extinct, but I’d venture to say the means of sending thoughts have somewhat advanced. So instead of pen and paper, it’s easier to send a text or ecard or email. My hs bf and I would exchange letters. I haven’t so much since then written any love letters but I will send a “just thinking of you text” or an ecard and insert my own thoughts. Too, I like doing small thoughtful things. Nothing showy or brassy or even expensive but thoughtful. Sometimes, it’s easier for me that way, show how I feel without rather than words.

All these chicks are in denial tho! What they did is simply ignore the symptoms for 7-9 months! It’s soooo frustrating. You’re gonna be tired, emotional, throwing up for 3 quarters of a year but never think to get it checked out til you’re giving birth in your bathroom?

WiseDiva, have I ever told you I appreciate this site. Seriously.
There are so many topics that come across this monitor that has really been a benefit to me. Some gives me insight or an idea on something I should do and some helps me to see what I should stop doing.

I was trying to figure out what I am going to try to do for my husband for Valentine’s Day. Being that I can’t get out to buy something for him nor can we go out for a nice evening I really could not imagine what we could do. My doctor denied my request for me to leave the house for a couple of house so I settled on us not doing anything.

But after reading the entry I have started on a letter that I am going to give him to tell how it’s been having him in my life to the past 10-1/2 years.

I use to leave him little messages on a post-it stuck to the mirror some mornings but life got in the way. I am going to write this letter as it pours out of my heart. No erasing or trying to be “cute” or sexy. Just unfiltered straight from the heart. And this is something I feel texting or emailing would take away from the warmth and personalization of it.

Thanks a mil.

@kimmie ~ my mother told me years ago that my child is the only one of her grandchildren that sends her “thank you” cards. She asked where did I learn to teach her that. I laughed and told her, when you appreciate something someone has done to or for you, you should tell them. It’s that simple! She hugged me. To be honest, that was one of the best hugs I ever received from her. No kidding!!

Raqi – You can do a little small scale In-house scavenger hunt if you’re able to move around a bit. Leave little clues that lead him to the next clue and so on and so forth. Maybe have the love letter be at the last location which would then lead to the final stop. (a cute picnic made of things you already have in the house) It would be funny to see how creative yall can get. A five year old can of vienna sausages, some stale Ritz crackers, a couple slices of molded cheese and two wine glasses of red or purple koolaid. After all those years, I you can never get too old of a sense of humor & being able to laugh with each other. ;-)
