Christmas gifts gone wrong

If you have met someone new and have contemplated buying a present for Christmas, I urge you to be mindful of what you choose. In some cases, it may even be better to not buy anything at all.

If you have known each other for a short time, a really nice date or special outing may be the way to go. I know some classy people decide to dump their potential relationships to avoid the gift exchange, but it doesn’t have to happen that way!

I have seen gift exchanges derail a new romance simply because the person didn’t know enough about their date. You can misjudge their humor or personal taste and come off looking like a jerk.

Guys, don’t give someone you just started dating lingerie. It’s just lose-lose and way too risky, it’s hard to live down a bad gift purchase like that!

What is the best and worst Christmas exchange you have had?

I can recall this one guy that gave me what I thought was drug paraphernalia but it turned out to be an odd shaped crystal piece. It’s always good when the person can tell what the gift is right away!

Whatever you receive, good or bad, remember to be gracious and say thank you! Even if you have the urge to hurl the empty box at their head. Don’t do it!

That’s all! It says much…..I was just discussing with someone I am so over buying gifts for a mate……yesteryears! LOL Keep it light and simple is my theme……Over the years I come to appreciate the small priceless acts of kindness that money can’t buy! Peace of mind between two indiviudals who are completely satisfied with each other is a gift within it self…..I was stumbling recently with buy a gift for someone and just stopped and didn’t get anything….Doing to much indeed…It wasn’t neccessary at all….I am glad I listened to my inner voice just to chill and enjoy the gift of happiness….. :)

mernin’!

When it comes to buying Christmas gifts for someone that you just started dating….use caution.

The last thing you need is to go all out on a gift and have the relationship end a few months later.

Fortunately for me, I have either been with someone for a while before the holidays started or not in a relationshiop at all so I didn’t have to worry about the buying gift remorse.

It’s always fun shopping for someone that you have known for awile.
You already know their likes and dislikes so to see the look of joy on their faces when you have bought a gift that you know is spot on gives you an automatic atta girl (or atta boy if you are a dude)

Must admit my best gift exchange was of course from the marriage/committed relationship….this dating game to me just doesn’t call for deep pocket gifts……seriously I am thankful I am beyond looking for a gift or trying to give a gift to impress…Don’t get me wrong with time and a deep connection gifts are wonderful its just not priority with me at all….I am not looking for them and I am not buying them…..lol

I am happy to say that all of my exes had great taste when it came to giving me gifts.
I guess it makes it up for their lack of great boyfriend skills

The most memorable was a ring (1st) and furniture (2nd). The furniture though a big gift was more out of necessity rather than personal from my daughter’s father. It didn’t really feel personal….even so I appreciated

I remember one year, an ex wanted to take me to a new years eve party at some hotel in NY.
I was a broke college student so didn’t really have money for a dress.
He didn’t want me to spend money on a dress do he tried to downplay the dress code.
Some how or another I was able to buy a dress and without my asking, my mother got me the perfect shoes to match for Christmas.

My mom rarely gets me shoes (I have big arse dinosaur feet) but when she does buy them for me, she’s always spot on!!!

I’m sort of like Wise…if it’s new let’s do breakfast and maybe a nice card or something keeping it really simple….until we’re familiar enoughand have learned enough about one another to make great gift choices.

Good morning. Making salmon croquettes, scrambled eggs, toast and providing ruby red grapefruit juice for everyone.

When in a new relationship, I see no reason to go “all out” with the gift exchanges. Keep it light, keep it simple and get to know each other. Keep your $ in your pocket.

@topic: never received anything cooky from an ex. I am a gift card junkie, so unless I’ve picked up on the mention of a “wish-list” item while just out and about with sweetie, a gift card it is.

I think if a relationship is fresh you can do things like

1) give them a holiday cookie that you either made or is you lack cooking skills: bought
2) nothing wrong with a card
3) a holiday ornament (don’t go all out though)
4) a special dinner (followed by a special dessert  )

you know what: now that I think of it….. Scratch off tickets are not a bad gift to give for someone that you just embarked a new relationship with.

I mean…there is the anticipation of having a winning ticket, and let’s just say you do win big (something in the six digits big) you have your new beau to thank (hopefully you will share the winnings)

Hello Lady. All is well over here.

@Celisea ~ I’m on vacation too. Sitting here watching “The Town.” Pretty good movie.

Anybody have any ideas on how I can keep my dang cat from jumping in my tree and knocking all my ornaments off. I’m about to throw him out the window or flush him down the toilet!!!

Morning lovelies –

Gift giving…hate hate hate it. I don’t even really like getting them either. Too much can go wrong. You spent to much, not enough, you like it, you hate it and at the end of the day, it’s still just a material thing.

Best gift – A bracelet from Tiffany
Worst gift – Well, it turns out it was a candlestick holder, but it was big and bulky with like some tough alligator looking skin and was so heavy it could have been used as a blunt object. In addition, he left the clearance rack tag on from Pier One. I have a picture of it somewhere…

Good Morning All!!

Best gift…flowers and dinner

Worse gift…A St Patrick’s colored garbadine 2pc suit with gold embellishment(reminded me of something a church lady with a matching hat would wear) and jogging suit that was bought from a street vendor..ughhhhhhhhhh

Can we just say the fashion police would’ve taken me straight to jail without a thought of writing a citation if I wore this stuff!!!!!

I know, I know it’s the thought that counts, however they were hideous to say the least and way too big for me. It was obvious not much thought was put into it due to no questions asked about my size, favorite color or my style…LOL

LOL @ Blue.

Here’s how to avoid that ackwardness during the holidays:

Get involved with someone new during the beginning of the new year thru the Start of summer and try to stay in that relationship (only if things are going well) thru the end of the year onto next…
Therefore by the time the holidays have hit you have been together by 7 months (at the shortest)
The ackwardness is over and it’s okay to do the gift exchange.

If you happen to find yourself involved with someone new by the beginning or end of fall, best to keep it casual and don’t have it be serious until after the holidays….

random thought: if you are not shy about sleeping with someone then you shouldn’t be sly about doing the holiday gift exchange with that someone.
Just a thought….

I’m gonna be all alone this Xmas, and I’m gonna enjoy the solitude…As a single man in his 40s living in Atlanta, one would think I would have all sorts of dates and g-frieds to “gift,” but I have not met anyone that has really inspired me. Seems that a lot of women around here are very materialist, not in the philisophical sense, but in the sense that they are very into “things” like cars, clothes, shoes, etc. It seems that they “want” lots of everything, including six-pack abs on their boyfriends etc. Even if I had a g-friend I might just say “Hey, lets just relax and go for a walk in the woods this year.” And as an athesit, I feel kinda obligated to reject Christmas anyway. The frantic consumerism makes me sick to my stomach. Either way you look at it (Christmas as religious myth) (Christmas as secualr purchase-fest)I don’t care for it. And since I’m kind of a black sheep in my family, it’s the truly single life for me, and I like it.

@ARed ~ perhaps you should have used that blunt object on him. I kid, I kid….

@blue ~ did you have a great time? Did you keep track of your teddy bear?

One of my best gifts came from my child. She gave me an alabaster turtle figurine. Something about that turtle makes me feel good when I hold it in the palm of my hand. I think it has healing powers. I find myself sometimes meditating with it in my hand.

meh

I’ve given gifts with no thought to receipt of anything in return,

I’ve gotten gifts with no thought to giving anything in return,

And either way, I believe it’s the thought that counts.

Worst gift: a camoflauge t-shirt with a Nike emblem. I put on the worst fake smile of my life.
