Atlanta named most chivalrous city?

Good news everyone! The great folks at Dockers® sent me the following news release about our great city. Check it out!

Last week, in a light-hearted chivalry smack-down between five major cities– Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco – a young woman or mature gentleman was staged in a high traffic pedestrian area in a state of distress, where they clearly struggled with heavy and toppling file boxes. Did anyone stop to help?

Indeed they did…and no one fared better than in Atlanta.

The results:

1) Atlanta proved to be the most chivalrous, with only up to 8 people passing our man or woman in distress before someone stopped.

2) Coming in second was Dockers’ hometown of San Francisco, with up to 17 people passing by before a chivalrous individual stopped to help

3) The third most chivalrous city was Chicago, with 20 passersby before help was offered

4) Fourth most chivalrous was Los Angeles, with 35 passersbys before someone took a moment to help

5) And in 5th place was New York (Manhattan), with up to 40 people passing by our man or woman before someone stopped to lend a hand

So what do you think? Pretty awesome to know that our city ranks so high compared to other cities?

I wonder if singles in each of these cities would agree with the chivalry quotients of their city?

In our city of transplants and natives, would you say that you meet chivalrous people often on the dating scene?

Clearly we have the south advantage. Do you believe that where we grew up and the way we were raised makes a difference?

I’m from NYC so I couldn’t say as far as the “southern hospitality” to Atlanta’s advantage. People seem nicer down here but I wouldn’t go so far to say chivalrous…I don’t know…

We in the South like to call it common courtesy, good manners or “Treat others the way you would like to be treated”! Come on down, y’all!!

“Do you believe that where we grew up and the way we were raised makes a difference?”

Of course, culture plays a big part in EVERYTHING one does, or does not do…..But don’t look for no modern day “Sir Walter Raleigh’s”…

Morning People,

Do you believe that where we grew up and the way we were raised makes a difference? most definitely. there are certain norms of society where ever you go, transplant that from one area to the next, and you become fish out of water…

Good Morning!!!

In our city of transplants and natives, would you say that you meet chivalrous people often on the dating scene? So far I have met guys who have shown chivalry so I expect nothing less!!!! So it’s apparent that chilvary isn’t dead. Generally speaking, whenever the door is opened for me by a stranger I say thank you as it’s not as common as it used to be, and I want a person to know their actions were appreciated so they can continue to do so.

Clearly we have the south advantage. Do you believe that where we grew up and the way we were raised makes a difference?

Although this can be subjective, I feel that if it’s not taught in the home it really doesn’t matter where you’re from as a guy that I dated from NJ had chivalry. It’s possible because his parents had southern roots….IDK I found that people from the south appear to be more friendlier. I am a southerner and was taught to speak to others regardless of whether you know a person or not, and some of my friends who are from the north mentioned it is not common to greet/speak someone in public that you don’t know. So perhaps it could make a difference in where you grew up that determines some of the things you do.

I think it could be environment and how we were raised. I know growing up in the south, the whole ’southern hospitality’ was engrand in us, with the speaking to every person that pass by, helping the eldery cross the streets, knowing your neighbors.

I try to teach it to my daughter, but she says you have to watch out for folks these days…which is true!

I’m a people watcher so when out an about I pay attention to the whole package. Eye candy is eye candy and I indulge. While they smile and make eye contact, I make note of whether or not he opened the door, or kept it open for the person behind him, returned smiles or good mornings of people passing by before he approached me or simply passed my way.

Geographically speaking, my travels are mostly throughout the caribbean and southern cities. I have been to Philly and Chitown and have to say Chicago felt somewhat southern in that BOTH men and women smiled on the street and said hello.

Philly the men just stared but didn’t speak, much like the women. Overall it felt like a cold city.

I think Atlanta is a chivalrous city in general, but I also agree with whoever said it doesn’t have much to do with the city, it starts in the home. Yes, in general, there are cities that seem to be friendlier and some that seem to be more rude than others. As for me, being from Cali, I had never even heard of the art of “mean-mugging” until I moved here 3 years ago. It’s impossible for me to mean mug, be rude or unfriendly, but I am not sure if that is because of the city I am from or just because of my personality. I’m 3rd generation native of California and my family is nice too, so go figure. I would aldo add that sometimes it can be attributed to one’s culture. My dad’s side is PR, so we’re just used to being friendly and generally welcoming, but, like most Latinos, that’s common, generally speaking.

@Mo- that made me remember something. Now, one thing I do NOT do is call anyone ma’am or sir and I HATE when anyone calls me a ma’am. A ma’am to me is like calling someone old and that is not good. LOL. Like, last month I attempted to call my mom a ma’am to see what she would say and she was like “what? I’m old, so don’t call me ma’am”! LOL

Also, I say “what” 24/7. So, if someone calls my name, I’m like “what”? I have been told that this is an absolute no-no here in the South, but oh well. I say what to my parents, everyone. I guess that can been looked at as a regional thing, I don’t know, but I had never heard of that before I moved here. *shrug*

I am the product of a Yankee and a southerner and raised in the west. I didn’t grow up using “sir and ma’am,” but I did learn proper etiquette. Adults were called by Ms or Mr. “lastname” until approval was given to call them something differently. I was taught to speak to folks, say please and thank you, to look folks in the eye, how to use place settings properly, etc.

But with nature, also comes nurture and you also can be influenced by your enviornment. A lot of stuff I’ve learned, doesn’t mean I do to this day. I don’t speak someone just becuase they are there, I’ll pass folks on the street all the time… In L.A. it was typical to do that. When I got to college, a lot of black folks complained how we would pass each other without speaking. I figured they must not be from around here, though everyone pretty much was.

I was walking through the ATL the other morning and one of the moving sidewalks was not working and a lady was struggling trying to carry her suitcase (no wheels) and a gentleman asked if he could help her. She looked so relieved as he picked up the suitcase and I heard him ask her which concourse she was headed to. It was very touching since she was clearly struggling with the suitcase.

ARed — Oh, there are plenty of bigots outside the south. Maybe they just keep it hidden better. A lot of areas — particularly the North & Midwest are either almost all white or very segregated, from what I’ve seen, so the racist attitudes might not be as readily apparent. But trust me, I’ve been around others of my people in these areas when there are no minorities around and some of the most offensive stuff I’ve ever heard (and I grew up in rural GA, mind you) has come out of their mouths.

But if we’re talking present day, I don’t think there’s as big a difference as a lot of people would want you to believe. A lot of non-southerners like to say they’re totally cool with other races — and yet they’re almost never around anything but other white folks. Now 20 years later, I started back speaking and the response is either a verbal response, smile, or still I don’t know you look so it’s a mixed bag like someone posted yesterday.

I just hope that whenever there is a person in need, there will be compassion shown to help another person out.

Due to the change in our culture/society, people are apprehensive about doing anything because of the “what ifs” instead of just doing it…IMO

Why should chivalry matter? Isn’t chivalry just an antiquated ideal? I can see maybe helping the old man, but why help the woman? I mean, isn’t helping her just a slap in the face of equality? I should think any self respecting, contemporary, woman would take this as an insult. She shouldn’t expect outside help any more than any man expects help. This only proves that Atlanta (read:”the deep south”), more than any other large city, really is living in the past.

Some aspects of the past are good things, and manners is one of them. Equality, my foot. It isn’t about equality; and such equality is a fallacy and a myth, anyway. It’s not about equality, it’s about fairness. Equality doesn’t factor into it much.

I’m pleased that Atlanta fared well in the survey. I do think it’s an aspect of being in the South vs. other regions of the country. The South having better manners in general, when compared to the rest of the country, speaks very well of the South.

I think the populations of Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska are something like 3 million each; I’d expect the Dakotas to be considerably less, especially North Dakota. They’re overwhelmingly white, and conservative in the sense of what conservatism used to be. Schools are great, unemployment is low, standard of living is average, and racism is very, very pronounced.

I think that one could reasonably say that in areas where AA population is under 10% (or even under 5%, as in many places in the Midwest and New England) racism is much more severe. Shoot, in Maine it’s Indians that bear the brunt of racism — there aren’t enough black people there to bother discriminating against!

I really don’t think the bigoted attitudes are any more prevalent here, I just think they’re more out in the open here — maybe that makes it worse here, I don’t know. But there are just as many people in other regions who think some of the same sh!t that people here come right out and say.

Women are confusing…they want men to be sweet and sensitive but then get lambasted for being “oversensitive.” Deep down women (especially educated, affluent) do want men to take charge and dominate them. They just don’t want men to go overboard and get abusive or take ALL control from them. Women are more submissive than they want to admit.

Tired of the rude ones

December 21st, 2010
1:05 pm

What these study folks call chivalry I call just plain good manners. And the level of just plain good manners has been plummeting for years.

Here’s a few tips.

Get off your damn phones – its just rude when you are with someone else, standing at a counter ordering, or ignoring a clear moment when you are supposed to be exhibiting just plain good manners (holding a door, driving like a human being, etc).

Women – when someone, man or woman, holds the door for you the polite thing to do is say thank you. And just because you are a woman (or on your damn phone again), doesn’t mean it isn’t RUDE when you just let the door fall on the man. Screw you. That’s the kind of behavior, along with the lack of thank you’s that made us stop being courteous in the first place.

All genders – our litigious, politically-correct, and government-terror-induced society now means that I might not approach you to help you for fear of being charged with assault, actually being assaulted in return, sprayed with mace, etc. Civil society will require a re-emphasis on the civil portion, and a de-emphasis on the government portion and that trend is moving in the opposite direction fast.

All genders – I don’t care who you are or what your good intentions are, approaching me or anyone at night when its dark in a rapid or in any way questionable manner is just no longer wise. Please, if you want to render assistance, be galant, or otherwise chilvarous, please do so in a manner that makes everyone feel comfortable.

There is no reason for any of us to behave the way everyone on television or in politics behaves. We should set a higher standard.

Good job Atlanta, maybe your momma did raise you right.

Chivalry very antiquated term don’t think it fits. Most courteous city I would believe.
Where chivalry is defined as the sum of the ideal qualifications of a knight, including courtesy, generosity, valor, and dexterity in arms…
courtesy: excellence of manners or social conduct; polite behavior. Although it seems to be dying out. Most Atlantan’s are not true southerners and have not been raised in the southern traditions so the do unto others but most people here to try to be courteous to one another.
generosity: readiness or liberality in giving. freedom from meanness or smallness of mind or character. Some of the most closed minded people I have met have been here in Atlanta. Unless it is something that fits their agenda, hang up generosity it’s non-existent.
valor: boldness or determination in facing great danger, esp. in battle. Unless you are talking rush hour on the freeways where there is plenty of boldness and determination and courtesy went out the window there.
dexterity in arms: not sure that I would call it dexterity but idiots packin’ heat… just what the public needs just look at the media to know that!

When it comes to relationships, I don’t have the patience
Now it’s too late, we got a little life together

But in the physical it’s like I’ma be trife forever
A different girl every night forever; told you to leave
but you’re stubborn and you love him and,
no matter what despite all the fu.c in and the cheatin,
you still won’t leave him, now you’re grievin
And I feel bad, believe me
But I’m young and I ain’t ready, and this ain’t easy
Wasn’t fair to tell you to wait, so I told you to skate
You chose not to, now look at the s. hit we gotta go through
Don’t wanna fight, don’t wanna fuss, you the mother of my baby
