Atlanta named most chivalrous city?

Good news everyone! The great folks at Dockers® sent me the following news release about our great city. Check it out!

Last week, in a light-hearted chivalry smack-down between five major cities– Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco – a young woman or mature gentleman was staged in a high traffic pedestrian area in a state of distress, where they clearly struggled with heavy and toppling file boxes. Did anyone stop to help?

Indeed they did…and no one fared better than in Atlanta.

The results:

1) Atlanta proved to be the most chivalrous, with only up to 8 people passing our man or woman in distress before someone stopped.

2) Coming in second was Dockers’ hometown of San Francisco, with up to 17 people passing by before a chivalrous individual stopped to help

3) The third most chivalrous city was Chicago, with 20 passersby before help was offered

4) Fourth most chivalrous was Los Angeles, with 35 passersbys before someone took a moment to help

5) And in 5th place was New York (Manhattan), with up to 40 people passing by our man or woman before someone stopped to lend a hand

So what do you think? Pretty awesome to know that our city ranks so high compared to other cities?

I wonder if singles in each of these cities would agree with the chivalry quotients of their city?

In our city of transplants and natives, would you say that you meet chivalrous people often on the dating scene?

Clearly we have the south advantage. Do you believe that where we grew up and the way we were raised makes a difference?

I so wish more of our children were trained.

Celisea, sadly most of them are the offspring of parents who have no manners. They set the example(s) in the grocery stores (Wally-Worlds, etc.) when they squeeze by you without saying excuse me, or dang near run you over with their carts, all thw while having junior in tow following suit. :-(

“No one is saying it ONLY exists in the south.”

No, but you are saying it’s worse here and that’s where some of us would beg to differ. ;-)

And yes, we probably are a little defensive about it here just because the south gets stereotyped all the time. And the truth is, in the present day, it’s really not much different than a lot of other areas in this country. That’s all…

But of course, I’m biased — I make no bones about that.

Delight – so many continue to be shocked that “in this day and age” outrageous stories of hatred and bigotry continue to make the news because of this false sense of security and progressive tolerance perpetrated by the hidden racism

Within corporate America it’s not front page news but I agree with you on how so many seem oblivious to the face that racism remains and persists. I’m just dang shocked at so many blacks here that will look at you as if you’ve grown 2 heads at the mention or indication of racism. In many cases it’s quietly overt (if I can use) and QUITE apparent but if you’re looking for the promise land…the wrong way…you’ll miss the queue every time. I don’t try to school or help folks along (up here) in that area because you can do more of a disservice to yourself rather than open the eyes of so many blind ones. But yeah, racism ain’t never died.

Doesn’t make me wrong tho.

But then again, perhaps it is. You’ve never really lived outside of the south…have you? I have.

It irks me to no end when children aren’t trained….of course it’s not their fault. I’ll stop one in a minute though, passing or stepping over me and say “say excuse me please”….yep, I have no quams about passing it along. This dude hit my car with his car door and looked at me and kept walking. OF COURSE, us both heading in the bank I said, “ummm you hit my car door” and he just looked and I repeated it and he finally said excuse me but ummm, YOU hit my dang car the door, aside from looking for a scratch, you could at the least apologize.
Gheesh!

Good point, I have not. I do travel extensively, but I’ve never lived outside the south, this is true.

On the other hand, you’ve never been sitting in a bar in the north or midwest where there is not one single non-white person in the entire place & heard what is said then by some of these tolerant white folks, have you? I have. ;-)

I think Ared is right….well I agree with her on this.

No wonder u see down here, them white folks keep moving to the northern areas to avoid black folk. It’s pretty obvious that they font want blackness nor pinkness near them.

They may not like black that much up north but at least in public, they are more tolerant.

The southern congressmen and senators don’t hide it either,as far as their legislative record shows. It’s quite apparent because they represent their constituents well.

Now,what people discuss on their dinner tables with their kids, in the privacy of their homes, that’s a different matter!

Some of y’all black people are equally bigoted but that’s another matter.

Racism: a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

Bigotry: stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one’s own.

I would expect that racist white people in a segregated environment would speak of other races the same way that racist black people speak of white people in such an environment. It’s never pretty. It’s different from the actual experience of discrimination; racism and discrimination aren’t the same thing, of course. Discrimination can result from racism, but racism doesn’t necessarily need to be present for it to occur. People discriminate for about any reason under the sun.

ARed — That wasn’t my point at all… All I’m saying is that a lot of folks in these so-called tolerant areas will say sh!t when only other whites are around that they probably wouldn’t otherwise — whether folks will come right out in your face with it like they do in the south or not, the same attitudes can be found all over. Maybe it’s better to be a closet racist than an in-your-face racist? But that’s the biggest difference, from what I’ve seen.

I really don’t think the bigoted attitudes are any more prevalent here, I just think they’re more out in the open here — maybe that makes it worse here, I don’t know. Women are confusing…they want men to be sweet and sensitive but then get lambasted for being “oversensitive.” Deep down women (especially educated, affluent) do want men to take charge and dominate them. They just don’t want men to go overboard and get abusive or take ALL control from them. Women are more submissive than they want to admit.
