What’s the worst that can happen?

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to throw caution to the wind and just do whatever you wanted to do? No risk/benefit analysis, just following an impulse and do what feels good. Maybe it could lead to a new experience or a new romance!

I’m cautious with most things and I certainly have not been accused of being impulsive about dating. Maybe it’s time to switch things up, though. What’s the worst that can happen if you let your impulses dictate what you do? Would that be a brilliant idea or a slightly insane thing to try?

Sigman Freud theorized that the human personality is driven by the Id, ego, and the superego. The Id is the “irrational” part of our personality. If this is true, then my Id is all dormant! Rarely do I get irrational about dating, but maybe it’s time I did.

What’s the most impulsive thing you have ever done? How did it turn out?

Do you think our overly cautiousness sometimes cuts us off from experiencing something (or someone) important that we should really experience?

Foots — Ahhhh…. Yeah, Cancun has a way of unfurling one’s freak flag. Matter of fact, it was a trip to Cancun that sealed the deal (in my mind) that then Swiss Miss needed to become Mrs. Swiss… Lil’ mama rocked my world (in several public places, to boot) on that trip… So much so that I though to myself, “Mmmm hmmmm…. She’s the one…”

Foots – Fantastic story! When I think of some of the crazy chances I took when I was younger, I feel fortunate to be still among the living!!

But see, just you deciding to take the trip alone would be a major stretch for alot of people! That right there would be a big risk, even if it was just a drive down to Daytona Beach.

I was telling one of my more timid friends one day about how I went to UGA and loved it but I really wanted to go to UCLA. My dad was not paying those out-of-state fees though, and I had 2 brothers close behind starting college soon, so UGA it was. She told me once she didn’t believe I would have gone if my dad would have let me because it was so far away. I told her not to put off her fears on me because I would have had absolutely no problem not being close to home and off on a new adventure!

@Foots ~ your story of going back to the house makes me remember the time I was at V’s on P’tree (I know, I know showing my age) and my girls and I met some guys…we partied like rock stars then followed them back to their room at The Omni. I soon realized they were trying to sequester us in different parts of the suite. We knew this could get ugly. We tried our best to position ourselves close to one another and close to the door. Well, the evening wore on with us really staying close to that door. Each time the guy would try to shift any of us around with a hug or anything one would laugh like a nut and break the hug. We sensed their frustration with us and started to bid our farewells. Only one made it to the door. ME! I swung it opened, grabbed the friend close to me and she grabbed the other. We threw our shoes at them and ran to the elevator. They didn’t follow us. We were screaming at ourselves for being so STUPID. Thankfully we got out w/o being raped!

Yes there is comfort and security with the familiar. But variety is also the spice of life!!!

Ditto Kimmie</strong. I've decided to get out more and just live life. I realized recently that I had been holding onto things that God knew I didn’t need…so He removed them from my life. It didn’t happen the way I wanted it to but it’s done nonetheless. Now I’m just open and ready for ALL of the NEW things I have yet to see/experience.

Oh I do recall a risky decision…after work one night a dude was riding next to me on 20E…he kept smiling and waving at me to pull over so I actually ended up pulling off at Candler Road to Dunkin Doughnut to talk to him. He could’ve been a killah, I know. He also happened to be at least 10yrs older than I was at the time. I would never do that nowawdays.

I mean I done did the freaky sneaky but IMO it don’t really count or does it? I lived with someone so it was sort of a given. When I think of throwing caution to the wind, I think of pure reactions…reacting with no platform underneath…do or die…no way to know the outcome…chance. Too dramatic?

Slim, I remember when I used to bartend at Club Fuel; Thursday nights used to be one of our busiest nights….and I’d have to be at work the next morning…so instead of teasing myself and trynna get some sleep, I’d go over to Metropolitan and hit up the Crystal Palace….aross the street was a trailer park which was also the ho stroll…..somma the best Georgia dome one could ask for, and only for a dub!!!!

(Had a hair emergency this morning – Sitting under the dryer at the salon, blogging from my Blackberry.)

Most of my risky behavior involves going places with folk I didn’t know and going THERE with folk I should have gotten to know better.

These days, my most frequent risk is coloring my own hair after three apple martinis.

I don’t necessarily shy away from risks, but I have come to realize that my life is more peaceful, more productive and happier when I put systems into place and follow routines. Unfortunately, systems and routines do not allow for a lot of spontaneity.

Brat — Yeah, she’ll be that crazy.

I was just thinking….perception is a funny thing. I had always thought that I was the non-risk taking, buttoned-up, responsible girl because everybody saw me that way and yes, I am that way. But it dawned on me a few years ago that I was completely shot out AS WELL AS non-risk taking, buttoned-up, and responsible. Looking back on some of the stupid stuff I did in high school, I’ve already been that way. Everytime I do something I think it out of my “everything has to be planned” character, I have to realize that if it really was completely out of my character, I wouldn’t have done it in the first place. So I’m on the “I’m every woman” kick now.

Ok..lurker biting 2can’s request…one from my “risky” list….shortly after my divorce, I met a guy online and after talking for about 2 weeks, I drove 3 hrs to meet him in Alabama–from Douglasville –he was from Dothan. We ate dinner, went dancing and karoaking, and had a great time. Made it to the hotel, opened the door, sat on the bed…and I started crying like a baby. He left and never called me back and deleted me from his contact list on Match.com. I drove all the way back grateful that I did not go there because I was lonely.
