Office romance really a bad idea?

I have met at least 3 couples who say that they met at work.  What gives!?  I know that dating co-workers has the potential for all sorts of drama, but does that mean office romance is really a bad idea?

I believe that there are some people who can actually pull it off.  Most of us don’t go into the office planning to fall head over heels in love.   It can happen in a totally organic way and before you know it, you can’t stop thinking of the person.  So what is the best way to handle it?

Would you consider getting involved with a co-worker?  Have you tried it before? Do you have any advice for someone who was embarking on a new romance with someone at work?

What concerns would you have about office romance?  I mean, honestly, what is the worst that could happen!

@Simple Man – note to the gents, and most women ive met have said the same: if you are planning something big or extended, u have tix for Friday nite, but the actual date of anniver, valentines, whatever is the Tuesday b4, thats fine. thats great that you planned something. but dont let the actual day of ____ go by without any recognition. bad juju…doesnt have to be big and extravagant ( well, for some women maybe) but something that acknowledges that day is important and not just any other day….
@Trevor – could have been, but since i leave the house at 7 and i set my stuff up for hm b4 i left, he had all the rest of the day to pull something together and salvage…
@Leggs – lmao, i forgot about that…no more devil its all the blogs fault now

I would be willing to say that there are more office “hook ups” than anyone truly knows about. I am not sure that I am a fan of Office Romance but an office Hook up is always fun!

I have no problem with it and have seen it work well enough. But people need to know if their company prohibits office dating. My company has an explicit policy against it, regardless of departments the individuals work in. If your company does and finds out, one or both can get fired.

Jeff – I’ve worked for companies with that policy also. Unfortunately, it was selectively enforced.

I do not think it is a good idea to date a co-worker. For one reason what if deep feelings develop and you end up splitting? You go to work every day after that seeing each other (maybe one of you are dating again) I think it would be an awkward situation.

Office romances are always off limits. If there are any serious issues whatsoever, one of the parties will be out the door post-haste.

on the topic of office romance, I met my husband at the first job I had after college. I was actually dating someone else at the time, and was teamed up with this guy for a few projects the company was doing. We both connected to each other over a few months and found that there was true chemistry. One thing led to another and we wound up dating. A few weeks later, I was transferred to another site in the city, so we continued our romance, but we really didn’t have to worry too much about it going badly and how it would affect the company and our reltaionship. As his manager, I always treated him the same as I did all of the other employees that worked with me. About a year later, I wound up being offered and accepting another job with another company.

We have been married now for 6 1/2 years and are expecting our first child in November, so it can happen, you just need to make sure that you separate work life from personal life.

@Leggs – i think its time to propose one of those meet/greet things so you can meet him in a public place and the blog can make their decision on this budding romance….

Simply put: Some can “pull it off”, and some even are successful. But the majority of workplace romances cause problems in the workplace. I am a veteran manager over 30 years, and my personal experiences range from once a worker arrived to work naked, to gain the attenion of her ex-boyfriend in the office, to another that drove into her ex-boyfriends truck to prove her love?

I can continue with 2 or 3 examples for every year, but can only recall two successes. Remember, never get your “honey” where you get your “money”.

If she’s your “honey” you should be tasting it for free! Or, she can be role playing be your PRO!
