Dating in the Facebook nation

I watch my teenage nieces and their dramatic Facebook status updates and can’t help but feel relieved.  I am so thankful that I never had Facebook in my teen years.  I should send Zuckerman a thank you card.

You wonder how much of ourselves start to take shape online.  We share on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and many other slightly narcissistic social media outlets.  Do you think people who want to date us could read or observe something and get turned off?

In a recent Forbes article, Are You Revealing Too Much On Facebook, the author makes a pretty interesting point.  Your “profile” can be raised or lowered in the eyes of a potential.  Since it isn’t a typical dating website, Facebook becomes a way people discover your personality.  This isn’t necessarily a good thing for everyone.

I can admit that I lost my excitement over a guy after watching a little of his social media existence.  Is it fair? Probably not.  At the same time, I couldn’t totally ignore how he “looked” on Facebook and Twitter.  It’s not your Mama’s dating scene, people.  If compatibility clues are there to reveal things to you, does it matter if they are e-clues?

What do you think? Is this a totally new way we are unfairly judging each other? Is it smart to look at all sides of a person?  IRL vs e-life, what’s the best way to determine if the person is a good catch?

Hola!

Wassup blue and Simple Man!

On topic: I been said folks put too much info on FB. In fact detectives are not working as hard, because FB is solving crimes for them. Also I hate all of that tagging people on FB. Another thing, what is up with 696 friends on FB, do you really think you have that many friends? I feel unless you are using it for advertising and marketing chill with all the friends, and hush with all the updates.

i think its definitely possible to turn folks off with you FB. and best believe folks are looking at it, in this age of Google-ing dates, FB is the next thing used to check up on a person. when you seem like an articulate person in public but your FB is full of updates written in ebonics and your friends seem, lets be kind and say maturity stunted, then yeah thats a turn off.
just seems to simple to end up with someone all in my business. dont need 142 people jumping on me with the “what happened” questions as soon as they see my relationship status change.

@Dirty D – hey Lady, I feel ya, cant wait to the weekend. kinda sad tho, be a monday moring already thinking about the weekend…hey, whats the moniker mean?
@Simple Man – oh, we did a Salsa class a few months ago, loved it! but was a tad sore the next day, i’ll admit. but Latin dancing seems to be the only thing i have any rhythm for! (now i wanna go dancing…)

Good morning All…needed one more weekend day.

FB or any other social networking site isn’t an unfair way to ‘judge’ or make assessments about a person because it’s the way they are representing themselves. I could see if someone else created a page for you and was resposible for what was put out there, which in most situations, isn’t the case. If I met a dude out somewhere and he added me as a friend on fb, I will take a look at his page. If he has nothing but pics of him shirtless, in over the top sexy-like pics or whatever, then i’m really not going to put that much effort into trying to get to know him after that. In the same token, I know folks are going to make their own assessments about me after seeing my page. Even with all that said, I still choose to take into consideration how they are in person…so you really have to take into account all sides of them to get a better view of who you’re dealing with.

Good morning everyone!

“Do you think people who want to date us could read or observe something and get turned off?” Of course. Personally, I think it’s crazy to constantly update your status, ongoings on FB. Relationships should be private and not privy to all your friends who can share and gossip with others who haven’t even tagged YOU as a friend. What a recipe for disaster!

Shout Out to Simple Man and his Salsa dance lesson..glad you had a blast.

I have a FB page where I keep in touch with people I know. I put a status up possibly two or three times a week if I choose to do so. Some do it daily but its their choice and its cool with me.

Glad to see everyone has a chill weekend.

Morning all – Hope you all had an enjoyable weekend.

If I meet a romantic interest in real life, we don’t become Facebook friends. We should be able to get to know one another without reading it online. With the recent ex, we probably didn’t become FB friends until we had been dating 4 months or so. I was happy to see that his page was reflective of the guy he was. There were a couple of thirsty broads doing too much, but nothing alarming.

Morning, y’all….

Here are the operative words in your post Diva, “narcissistic social media outlets.” You can be whatever you wanna be when you’re invisible! Like Dirty D posted, ain’t nobody got no damn 6-700 folks they deal with everyday, so more than likely they ain’t up on your daily life – therefore, you can tell ‘em, and be whatever you want…is a lot of the stuff TMI? of course! ’specially when it don’t add up to who, and what you really are….

Good Morning All,

Most of my FB friends are classmates from high school, people I volunteer with, friends I have met online and of course family. So since my aunties and uncles are on FB I have to refrain from going to out there in my post..and I have been guility of doing the awards show update in my FB status(Sorry folks I know that is annoying as heck) Most of what I share is stuff about parenting, quotes, updates on weekend activities, politics and of course smack talk for football. So if anyone reads my page..knows I love my kid, find inspiration in songs at times, care enough to let the world know I love my family and friends cause I am spending time with them, I am pretty informed on politics..and that my heart bleeds Black and Gold baby.

Socail sites like Facebook are going to be the death of real life dating…Looking at a FB page is only slightly better than being on say match.com in that you never get to see things in their proper context. It is a distorted veiw of people..

@blue yea I feel the same way here I am counting down for the weekend…I guess I am in a chill mode. Work is slow thus far today so hopefully I can get some things done, which would be a plus.

@2CPTG the funny thing is those folks with 600-700 friends post stuff for their 5-10 associates/friends and now their co-workers, HS associates, neigbors, auntie-cousin-brother-sister-stepdaddy on their mama side is in their business. smdh, not to mention most employers are googling and a lot of attorneys and law enforcement are googling.

On topic: I’ve seen some of my HS classmates start more ish than they did in school with FB. If two folks talk too much on FB they are together, if someone “likes” your status too many times they like you…I went through and deleted all five of those fools for the hell of it because they were simple.

i update my FB every few weeks, i use it mostly to keep up with Fam. but with all my Fam on there, including my parents and grands, gotta be careful wat i put out there and need to only approve friends who will do the same. gotta be careful what gets out there. hate it when folks do the 30 posts a day, not for anything significant “got a new bracelet…dam its hot…my dog licked my toe” who the he!! cares. and the 800 friends, you prob dont know who most of them are..

@DD – as far starting more ish on FB than when in school, expereinced that first hand, lost one of my oldest friends this way. over a simple statement too…she started on her wall about how FB ruins relationships, and i said its not relationships its what you choose to put out there to the public. all he!! broke loose from there, lol

Do you not think that to actually call your parents and grandparents on the phone would be a better way to communicate with them? Giving of your time to do so demonstrates that you care about them that much more. Relying on Facebook to communicate with people is like sending a form letter out at Christmas, times 1,000,000. No?

Good morning all!

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend. Mine started at 2 on Friday, when I left work, and was non-stop.

I just recently created a bare-bones FB account and I went kicking and screaming. A boutique I like in on it and invited me to be a friend, as well as 3 good friends of mine and my SO. I’ve only gone on it once. I just can’t get into it. I have no desire to look up those folk from high school that I didn’t like and didn’t like me. Reconnecting with a few college buddies might be fun, but they have a UGA AA alum website, and I keep up with quite a few of them, so really don’t need FB for that. Don’t have time for Twitter. This blog, a few news and magazine blogs and a few friend’s blogs are about all I can handle, e-wise.

Also, one of my HS associated husband’s ex made up a fake FB page and sent her a friend request, she accepted and the lady played it low key for a while, and the next thing you knew she wrote all kinds of ish on her wall, “Your man is behind on CS, you are bytch, your kids ugly, your man still wants me, your man was over here yesterday etc.” Now that was too much…i do not accept a request unless I “truly” know the person no friends or friends and all of that foolishness.

FB, is good when used the proper way, just like Advil you would not take the whole bottle, but if used with care it will help you. There is nothing wrong with picking up the phone and calling a mom or a grandma. However, I can send a private message via my FB account to my cousins in different states…the same as email and a letter. I think it is cool to keep up with folks in other places, and it is nice to get a message from time to time where someone is thanking me. Personally I cherish the notes from former students that are sent via FB, and I love it when someone that I have been thinking about for years send me a note. FB is cool, what makes it uncool is when it is abused.

Not to mention it is cheaper than making international calls and buying stamps. It serves as a nice way to keep in touch between the traditional methods.

I would submit that use of Facebook does not indicate that one is ‘tech savvy’. I think that the term ‘computer literacy’ fell out of the lexicon with mass adoption of the Internet, as early as 1995 or 1996, upon which the only things people really do with them are email and surfing. It doesn’t take much mojo to handle that. Computers and the Internet are like toasters: anybody can do it — grandma, Dad, a kindergartner.

Leggs – Same here! Plus, I sit enough here at work and in my daily commute. I am up moving when I am at home! Otherwise, my butt would spread so I would have to back thru the door!LOL!!

As for being judged by your FB page, I can’t really speak on it because it’s not really a part of my world, but I don’t look down on others because they use a particular medium. But like anything else, you have to watch what represents YOU. So if your FB is not representative of the person you are, who do you have to blame? My older relatives are not tech savvy. I am becoming moreso, but still am a bit old-school. I reach out and touch the people I deal with, thru phone, letters and/or visits. It works for us.

I would be more concerned about a current and potential employer judging me by FB if I were into that sort of thing. No way I would lose out on a potential opportunity because of some website mess!

I have heard a few people say that what they do online is not real and that what happens online does not matter in their real lives and people should not take it seriously… But the reality is that its all one world, what we say online as a real impact on our real lives, jobs, relationships, families, etc.

No longer can you have a wall up in your mind to separate whaat happens online from the real world… Look at the hit list last week in South America… someone posted on FaceBook a list of people they wanted killed, and within two weeks I think 3 people on the list were murdered, and two others were seriously attacked, but got away.

I would actually call into question the Facebook claim of number of users. I’d say that they can claim that many accounts, but how many people have more than one account? How many people have abandoned their accounts? How many accounts are actually a front for a business or commercial concern? I would speculate that the actual number of users could be 1/4 as many, maybe even 1/5.

Melo,

You are right if used correctly you can keep in touch with all your fam and plan events with them. I think one with a very small population of people in their lives would not benefit from FB, hence no one would want to find them, and they roll with an ultra small circle. However my maternal grandma (pa) had nine kids so my family is huge…my daddy side is big as well. I would have to quit my job to send out friendly letters to visit all of those folks.

As for whether you want to use terms like “tech savvy” or “computer literate” to describe older relatives or those that don’t use FB and other internet mediums, it really doesn’t matter. My grandmother is almost 90 years old and I have some other older relatives. They don’t have computers and don’t have the desire, so they don’t access the internet. And at their ages, they’ve earned the right not to do any da– thing they don’t want to do. It’s not imperative that they have computer access, like it is for everyone else. When my grandmother wants or needs to communicate online, my cousins bring over their laptops, but that’s not often. She is educated and can read and write quite well, and I’m if computers and the internet had been readily available in her younger days, she would have been as up on it all as the rest of us. It’s just not a big necessity in her world. I enjoy talking to her on the phone, visiting her and getting her cards & letters in the mail.

Real men don’t tweet or facebook. LOL

Remember when it cost to make a long distance call or mail a letter, with all of this new technology it takes no effort to communicate. I think that is why there is a lack of emotion, think about it. When you called someone in the 80/90’s you made sure what you had to say was important because you had to pay for that long distance call and when you took the time to write a letter you actually put more thought into it, there was no deleting or pulling back the letter once it was signed and sealed it was delivered.

20 years ago relatively few had personal computers, and there was no Internet. Nobody needed it then; nobody really needs it now.

Other than fun and supposed convenience, what does your computer do for you? There aren’t many more classes of applications now than there were in 1990: word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphics, and email were all around in 1990. Other than WP, DB and SS, not much else was widely used.

The same technology that revolutionized the publishing industry is all but putting it out of business now, with browser-based content replacing hard copy. However, there’s nothing (of actual value) that you can read online that hasn’t always been available through newspapers, magazines and books.

Online shopping has created a retail environment where hardly anyone knows anything about what they’re selling. Recent adventures with HD digital camcorders has been a poignant example of that for me: the cameras are great, but the software that comes with them sucks, and you’ll spend more on decent software than you do on the camera. Somebody tell me why I want to spend over $2000 on a dayum video camera?! I was better off with the old-style analog video camera of 20 years ago.

What does all the technology of the so-called “Information Age” actually do for you, that’s of actual value?

Dude was living a 2nd life that I knew nothing about. At home he was everything that I could have imagined, on the social sites he was the ladies man. Every woman had access to him, no matter if he was here or out of town. He enjoyed being single and pretending to be this guy on the social sites. Maybe that’s who he really was? I had to realize that I didn’t know who he was. I blamed myself for not knowing. It was a job well done until he was caught.

Wise: I’m sure someone else has pointed this out but since I ain’t going to read the commits I’ll stated it again. “We share on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and many other slightly “NARCISSISTIC” social media outlets.” – This says it all to me and these types of “social media” have contributed to this country reaching the pathological state of LYING and clinical DELUSION all for the sake of “self esteem”.

Ared: ” also hate the ones with no profile pics. FACEbook. LOL” – If you are my friend then you should know what I look like. Yeah I don’t have a pic up either.

if you’re a vet in the technology arena that you say, then you know, “there was no Internet,” ain’t true…..do you recall “Prodigy,” or, the original Netscape? But that’s neither here nor there….the information age has made the world smaller; you have a wealth of information at your fingertips; and if you can’t see the value in that, then something’s wrong with you….

“What does all the technology of the so-called “Information Age” actually do for you, that’s of actual value?” – Allows me to be in several places at one and get paid. I don’t have travel as much and I can live in any city, state or country I choose. So the “Information Age” is perfect for me.

Prodigy, CompuServe, all the wildcat boards, sure… use of them was fairly minimal though, compared to Internet use.

I would submit that the availability of information looked up through google/bing/yahoo/mooter etc. etc. has created a society where nobody really knows anything — they just know how to go look up an esoteric detail. Hence, no such thing as experts. That’s a bit of an exaggeration for what’s currently the case, but that’s where it leads.

2CP – I agree, whether you like it or not, it is all here to stay – not going back. You either get with it or get left behind. I remember when all we had were encyclopedias to do homework with. Now when I help kids with homework, we can look up tons of info on the web. And it is just wonderful not having to run all over town when you are looking for something in particular to purchase. And imagine job-hunting without the web? So many jobs you would not know existed are available at your fingertips to apply for. Even though I’m not into FB or Twitter, I can’t imagine the almost complete shutoff from the world that lack of access to the web would bring in my life.

I would submit that once upon a time, people simply knew things because they were experts in the field. I’m constantly faced with technologists that don’t really know what they’re doing. They can google things all day long though — and personally, I find that the Internet is very useful for finding out information about technology, too. Real experts are becoming fewer and fewer, though.

Wikipedia might be pretty handy, but the content therein is a bit suspect. Bible study is enhanced through sites like biblegateway.com. I can get a replacement manual for my gas powered edger just by looking it up. It’s hard for me to characterize these things as justification and rationale for the monster that the Internet has become, though.

Frankly, the Internet was better in 1996 than it is now. The marketeers have crippled a good thing, and the net result is loss of all personal privacy — Facebook is a prime example of that, and yet for many, it’s their primary use for their computer and the Internet.

Loss of personal privacy thru facebook is not anybody’s problem but u,the person who puts the stuff on there.
Thats where personal responsibility comes in.
Wikipedia might be pretty handy, but the content therein is a bit suspect is it not updated by users?? so u have to know and understand what u are getting be4 hand. Same with any other sight like google..u sift the data coz because its from the net dont mean its 100% aunthentic and accurate.

Might this be a case of google misleading you into thinking you know anything about that? Not to be insulting or offensive; only to illustrate the point.

As of WW 2, operations that required anything more than simple adding and subtracting required a room-sized contraption that resembled a computer in name only. It was the early 60’s before anything resembling a modern calculator existed, and those would add, subtract, multiply and divide. The stuff Einstein was concerned with exceeded that such that a BB resembles the Sun in size. He died in 1955, up to a decade before even that existed. Mercury spacecraft flew without computers, and the engineers that designed and built them used slide-rule technology, not computers and calculators.

I will give my two cents on technology since I work in the field and I like to observe what goes on in the tech field.

Technology in general has made life for some a lot easier and accessible. Business can be done from someone’s laptop in the park. I work on a project for the state of Alaska. Most of my team members live in Texas, Minnesota, and some other states around the country. IMO, in the near future, you can get office space in America for pennies on the dollar because most if not all companies will have their employees telecommute five days a week.

ABC’s opinion about Facebook and Twitter are no different than what people said about Myspace when it was the hot thing. These sites can and do make people less transparent. As we blog today, someone is working the next best thing on a Commodore 64 in their parent’s garage.

As a society and culture, we are evolving each and every day and technology aids in that. I believe that having this technology is great but I cannot and should not replace basic human interaction.

For Real, I can’t think of military secrets leaked during Vietnam that compare to the recent WikiLeaks brouhaha. Vietnam was, to my mind, the first time that Americans saw images of war as it was going on, with journalists on the front lines reporting it nearly live, and in relatively uncensored fashion — relative to censorship during Korea and WW II — but I can’t think of military secrets being leaked, off the top of my head. I guess I could google it! :-)

Without having read other’s opinions, I HATE FB. I have a shell of a profile because someone mentioned a video posted and saw me in it. Said attempted to forward the link but was unable….so I went in to see the video and yep I was about 18…it was me and a few folks at a gathering doing nothing….so I didn’t get the point of it being posted. I think the whole concept (if you can call it that) is pointless and silly. I have a cousin in DC that sent me a text asking if I was out there. I mean what else to do with it after you’ve read if they’re single or not, the genre of music they like, how many kids they have, etc.?
What then? I don’t see the point of it all. Professional networking sites such as Linkedin, I can dig. I’ve been contacted by recruiters and able to network. FB? 600 700 plus friends you say? Not really and again what’s the point of it all? I’m pretty much turned off by anybody with a buttload of friends hanging on. Not only that, it’s a means to lie, lie and lie. My nephew posted “Owner and CEO”…of what? Does he even have a job? One of my sisters, grown as ever, engaging with her daughter about NOTHING. Dumb idol conversation and a bunch of high fiving (i.e. thumbsup). “I’m bout to cook” or “I’m bout to serve my man” huh? I’m not understanding. Then again, I’m slow. @Melo as for weddings, events at work, and when you are a guest at someone’s function bringing your own to go dish is a NO NO. However, since I am single and it is just me I welcome folks to bring a to-go dish if I am having something at my house, otherwise Waste Management will get the seconds.

As for BM being sterotyped I agree it is myth, not all BM are out there looking for an O. Just like not all black people can dance. Personally I am sick of the sterotypes, but hey what can I say.

blue….Here is my favorite Tiger Woods Joke….

It is near the Christmas break of the school year. The students have turned in all their work and there is really nothing more to do. All the children are restless and the teacher decides to have an early dismissal. Teacher: “Whoever answers the questions I ask, first and correctly, can leave early today.”
Little Johnny says to himself “Good, I want to get outta here. I’m smart and will answer the question.”
Teacher: “Who said ‘Four Score and Seven Years Ago’?” Before Johnny can open his mouth, Susie says, “Abraham Lincoln.”
Teacher: “That’s right Susie, you can go home.” Johnny is mad that Susie answered the question first.
Teacher: “Who said ‘I Have a Dream’?”
Before Johnny can open his mouth, Mary says, “Martin Luther King.”
Teacher: “That’s right Mary, you can go.” Johnny is even madder than before.
Teacher: “Who said ‘Ask not what your country can do for you’?”
Before Johnny can open his mouth, Nancy says, “John F. Kennedy.”
Teacher: “That’s right Nancy, you may also leave.”
Johnny is boiling mad that he has not been able to answer to any of the questions.
When the teacher turns her back Johnny says, “I wish these bitches would keep their mouths shut!”
The teacher turns around: “NOW WHO SAID THAT?”
Johnny: “TIGER WOODS. CAN I GO NOW?

Not about FB, but there was an article last week that states AA use cell phones twice the rate of whites and AA females use more than AA males. AA also text more. A similiar article was in Essence a few months ago but my wife doesn’t believe either. Neither article gave the reasons why but I have felt this way for awhile. I thought it was because I circulate in a predominately AA environment therefore I saw more usage. I’m sure the people who do these type studies have a much deeper reason.

@blue? it shld not take but just about 3 seconds to put it in once she is open legged and u have pivoited ur strongest kneee on the bed and ur tool box is out, primed and ready to rumble..to get him inside.

i must admit tho,it has been more than 20 yrs since i hit a fat woman but its also easy to take a good 5 minutes or so,just looking for the hole..esp if u hitting from the dog style…if u not didligent in making sure u inside..u run the risk of nutting on mere thigh flesh  confusing it for the warm hole.

i remeber this one time, big girl went doggie and aske me to hit..i cldnt find the hole..meanwhile shes asking me,”what u waiting for?” and im telling her,”i cant find it”…biug girl says,”what u mean u cant find it?”" we were both upset…..she was upset coz u know how they do..they flip it and assume u calling them fat..making them mad….

Cruise ships can sink, but it’s been a few years since one did, I think — there was a quite large and modern Greek cruise ship that sank off Santorini in 2006 or 2007, right next to shore, after hitting some rocks. A smaller ship on an Antarctic cruise had to be abandoned earlier this year due to — guess what!! — hitting an iceberg!

More likely to get deathly ill from virus, or fall overboard — I think it’s something like 20 people per year simply disappear without a trace from cruise ships.

The ships are beautiful. While afloat. Titanic seems to continue to attract a lot of attention from the bottom of the North Sea, though.

It was a goldenlab and he just was licking her snatch, no condiments on her at all, he was just slopping it up. We were getting high and some were getting thier high from other drugs besides weed. She wasn’t moaning or acting like she was about to climax, but it was gross to me. Hey boyfriend wsa there and was proud of the whole thing. So do you ask a woman if she has let a dog eat her on the first date or not? LOL

Personally, I don’t get the whole “I gotta take my dog everywhere” mentality. I have a Lab/German Shephard mix. We love him to death, but still, we don’t have an overwhelming desire to take him each and every place we go. For starters, he is just too d**m big to throw in the car at all times with my wife and daughter (27 inches high, 86 lbs). He’s very well behaved, but still, leaving him at home does not kill him.

I read an article about how a lot of restaurants are starting to add areas where people can dine while their pets are with them. I will pass on such a place.

@czBrat I hope you are right about it being an urban myth…I heard long time ago a spinster/cat-lady maid caught her being licked by the dog. I never believe that one, because I always felt if it was true the maid would have been too scared to tell it especially in the deep south.

And for any of you who want to see it for yourselves there are plenty of videos out there with women getting licked by dogs, effed by horses (I sent melo that link. LOL) But the nasty thing I ever saw was by accident. A guy was having sex with his rott. I saw the title and did not believe it, once I saw what was going on I threw up, literally.

And, I’m not concerned about negativity. Just felt like pointing it out to you in case you forgot how elitist you sound. Believe you me, I’m not the only one. I just spoke on you always talking about you know so much more than the next Joe Blow on any given topic. Fine! I disagree. Let’s continue to ignore each other. @cz – to get away from the icky dog stories :

News of the Weird:
Though most victims seemed baffled or distressed by the behavior of Sherwin Shayegan, 27, another thought him “completely harmless.” From time to time (allegedly dating to at least 2006), Shayegan befriends high-school male athletes, questions them as a reporter would, and finally, jumps on their backs and demands “piggyback” rides. No other overtures are made, and the principal complaint about Shayegan, after the shock wears off, seems to be his obnoxiousness.
