Dating in the Facebook nation

I watch my teenage nieces and their dramatic Facebook status updates and can’t help but feel relieved.  I am so thankful that I never had Facebook in my teen years.  I should send Zuckerman a thank you card.

You wonder how much of ourselves start to take shape online.  We share on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and many other slightly narcissistic social media outlets.  Do you think people who want to date us could read or observe something and get turned off?

In a recent Forbes article, Are You Revealing Too Much On Facebook, the author makes a pretty interesting point.  Your “profile” can be raised or lowered in the eyes of a potential.  Since it isn’t a typical dating website, Facebook becomes a way people discover your personality.  This isn’t necessarily a good thing for everyone.

I can admit that I lost my excitement over a guy after watching a little of his social media existence.  Is it fair? Probably not.  At the same time, I couldn’t totally ignore how he “looked” on Facebook and Twitter.  It’s not your Mama’s dating scene, people.  If compatibility clues are there to reveal things to you, does it matter if they are e-clues?

What do you think? Is this a totally new way we are unfairly judging each other? Is it smart to look at all sides of a person?  IRL vs e-life, what’s the best way to determine if the person is a good catch?

abc: “I don’t see what military secrets pertinent to war in Afghanistan and Watergate have to do with each other.” – Okay how about leaks during the Vietnam War? Was that okay since it was a newspaper instead of the internet?

“Might this be a case of google misleading you into thinking you know anything about that?” Isn’t the use of google or other information sites available to give you answers to your particular questions. Not misleading in thinking you know anything…just able to answer the question at hand or look up information on a particular subject. Same as we did when we owned Funk & Wagnall’s encylopedias, or looked up a word in the dictionary. Google, wipipedia, etc. provides the same information at a keystroke. No longer do we have to worry about paper cuts in turning the pages of a book to get info…(J/K).

I will say that social media has helped police those who are policing us better and hold them to the standard that some were abadoning. Also countless times where people have been in distress or it has provided true on the spot news that was not washed out by the current media. We used to have to rely on indentured reporters point of view but now we can get live reports of what is going on from the indeginious people on site…sometimes quicker than the news can report it.

I will give my two cents on technology since I work in the field and I like to observe what goes on in the tech field.

Technology in general has made life for some a lot easier and accessible. Business can be done from someone’s laptop in the park. I work on a project for the state of Alaska. Most of my team members live in Texas, Minnesota, and some other states around the country. IMO, in the near future, you can get office space in America for pennies on the dollar because most if not all companies will have their employees telecommute five days a week.

ABC’s opinion about Facebook and Twitter are no different than what people said about Myspace when it was the hot thing. These sites can and do make people less transparent. As we blog today, someone is working the next best thing on a Commodore 64 in their parent’s garage.

As a society and culture, we are evolving each and every day and technology aids in that. I believe that having this technology is great but I cannot and should not replace basic human interaction.

Just my thoughts

do u think Tiger’s foibles helped perpetuate the stereotyping of black men in the eyes of some white folks that black athletes are just one bunch of over sexed maniacs/dudes??

@Blog chics?? d u like ur black men the way they are..sexed up good or over sexed is too much for uall?

Melo, those observations are factually inaccurate; I’m not sure where you came up with that stuff.

For Real, I can’t think of military secrets leaked during Vietnam that compare to the recent WikiLeaks brouhaha. Vietnam was, to my mind, the first time that Americans saw images of war as it was going on, with journalists on the front lines reporting it nearly live, and in relatively uncensored fashion — relative to censorship during Korea and WW II — but I can’t think of military secrets being leaked, off the top of my head. I guess I could google it! :-)

Abc sounds like a bit of a technophobe.

As for me, I DJ on the side, so technology has made my side gig very easy, so to speak. Instead of lugging around crates of records or books of CD’s, all my music is stored digitally on my external hard drive. All I have to do is go to my software, type in the name of the song that I’m looking for, and I’m good. Also, if I get a request for a song that I don’t have, I have the luxury of downloading it through Itunes, and I can fulfill that request.

Melo:

folks bring “to go” containers at company functions/friend parties, wedding etc = Ghetto behavior/no hometraining! You wouldn’t see such at more “bougie” folks functions, but anything is possible from folks that don’t know any better or have not been taught, especially if it’s not frowned upon in your circle of associates.

I thing BOTH black men AND women are unfairly stereotyped – by others and by our own people. But it’s not what people call you, it’s what you answer to that is important.

As for Tiger, it just goes to prove that you can run but you can’t hide. He’s never identified with “us” anyway, but to the “rest” of America he was just another…….

Without having read other’s opinions, I HATE FB. I have a shell of a profile because someone mentioned a video posted and saw me in it. Said attempted to forward the link but was unable….so I went in to see the video and yep I was about 18…it was me and a few folks at a gathering doing nothing….so I didn’t get the point of it being posted. I think the whole concept (if you can call it that) is pointless and silly. I have a cousin in DC that sent me a text asking if I was out there. I mean what else to do with it after you’ve read if they’re single or not, the genre of music they like, how many kids they have, etc.?
What then? I don’t see the point of it all. Professional networking sites such as Linkedin, I can dig. I’ve been contacted by recruiters and able to network. FB? 600 700 plus friends you say? Not really and again what’s the point of it all? I’m pretty much turned off by anybody with a buttload of friends hanging on. Not only that, it’s a means to lie, lie and lie. My nephew posted “Owner and CEO”…of what? Does he even have a job? One of my sisters, grown as ever, engaging with her daughter about NOTHING. Dumb idol conversation and a bunch of high fiving (i.e. thumbsup). “I’m bout to cook” or “I’m bout to serve my man” huh? I’m not understanding. Then again, I’m slow. I swore off DVD players until they stop making VCR tapes. So, some of my disdain my not entirely attribute to the frivolity of it all…some of that just may be me.

@Melo as for weddings, events at work, and when you are a guest at someone’s function bringing your own to go dish is a NO NO. However, since I am single and it is just me I welcome folks to bring a to-go dish if I am having something at my house, otherwise Waste Management will get the seconds.

As for BM being sterotyped I agree it is myth, not all BM are out there looking for an O. Just like not all black people can dance. Personally I am sick of the sterotypes, but hey what can I say.

blue….Here is my favorite Tiger Woods Joke….

It is near the Christmas break of the school year. The students have turned in all their work and there is really nothing more to do. All the children are restless and the teacher decides to have an early dismissal. Teacher: “Whoever answers the questions I ask, first and correctly, can leave early today.”
Little Johnny says to himself “Good, I want to get outta here. I’m smart and will answer the question.”
Teacher: “Who said ‘Four Score and Seven Years Ago’?” Before Johnny can open his mouth, Susie says, “Abraham Lincoln.”
Teacher: “That’s right Susie, you can go home.” Johnny is mad that Susie answered the question first.
Teacher: “Who said ‘I Have a Dream’?”
Before Johnny can open his mouth, Mary says, “Martin Luther King.”
Teacher: “That’s right Mary, you can go.” Johnny is even madder than before.
Teacher: “Who said ‘Ask not what your country can do for you’?”
Before Johnny can open his mouth, Nancy says, “John F. Kennedy.”
Teacher: “That’s right Nancy, you may also leave.”
Johnny is boiling mad that he has not been able to answer to any of the questions.
When the teacher turns her back Johnny says, “I wish these bitches would keep their mouths shut!”
The teacher turns around: “NOW WHO SAID THAT?”
Johnny: “TIGER WOODS. CAN I GO NOW?
