Does fashion matter?

Have you ever had a date show up and their entire outfit was inappropriate  or maybe even bizarre?  I think it seems like a silly thing to “deduct” points on when you are checking somebody out.  Does fashion really matter that much, though?

I remember talking to a guy who said he didn’t call for a second date because the woman showed up to the first date looking too conservative.  He said she may as well have worn a “nun habit” considering how little skin she was showing.

What do you think fashion and style says about our personalities and image on the dating scene?

Would you dump someone because you didn’t like the way they dressed?

Is it ever a good idea to give wardrobe  “suggestions” to people you are dating?  What if you were in a relationship, do you think it’s ok to change your significant others’ clothing or style?

When you see people out and about, is it their “style” that catches your eye before their looks?

Happy Friday!

I think a combination of the two catches my eye. I love a well dressed, neat man.

I don’t think this applies to guys so much as women. I’m not too concerned with a man’s sense of fashion. If he is trendy thats ok….but if he is too into being fashionable (i.e. he can dress me better than I can), there will be big question mark over his head. I think that for the guy that said the woman dressed too conservatively is full of ish and was just looking for something to say. had she been showing skin he probably would have had something adverse to say. I think she was appropriately dressed it just didn’t appeal to him. I know some Christian guys who would have jumped all over it. I have a friend who is very extreme and if a girl is showing any type of skin he will not go on another date with her b/c he feels as a Christian she should not dress worldly or to appeal to his sexual nature.

Bottom line, tomato tomahto. As long as you look neat and clean and you match I think it depends on personal taste.

Good morning.

Must admit that what he is wearing may catch my eye enough to give consideration, or it may be just enough for me to give a blank stare and remain polite but keep it moving. Hell, what looks nice to me or on me may be a complete mess to another.

To me fashion isn’t necessarily about being up on the latest trends, it’s more about wearing your clothing respectively, being neat in your appearance and definitely not mixing polka dots with stripes.

I thought all women did this once they snagged the guy. lol

Chick: You’re not wearing that shirt are you?

Dude: Yeah. I look fly right?

Chick: Here, wear this other shirt I bought you.

Dude: What’s wrong with this shirt? I wore this on our first date. You loved it. You said it was original and creative.

Chick: I DID say it was original and creative, but SURE didn’t say I loved it. I love YOU, but I sure as he!! don’t love that shirt.

I like to wear trendy, alluring clothes that show off my best assets in the appropriate manner (dress sexy but conservatively in the office) and trendy, hot style when I’m off work.

So, if a guy is wearing something nerdy, he is probably 100% geeky. And sorry guys but that is boring (for me). I like the conservative khakis, polo shirt, jeans, button down shirt, Ed Hardy type combinations on a guy. But phat farm, fubu, etc gotta go if you are going to continue to hang with me. If you are taking me out to dinner on a first date, put on khakis or casual slacks. Sometimes it is just how the clothes hang on you.

I am guilty of giving up on a guy if he doesn’t know how to dress.

Happy Friday Blog Gang!

I absolutely LOVE fashion! I can’t afford to dress like I really would like, but I do okay with what I have and can find bargains on quality clothing. I dress appropriate with my own unique flare. For dates, I like to dress fun & cute, not skanky or nunish.

As for men, I absolutely love a well-dressed man! Fortunately my SO knows how to dress, in fact of all my boyfriends he wins the best-dressed award. He’s classic with a bit of edge, which is what I like. He is a rarity though. I find that most men, especially straight men, don’t know how to dress. They cover the basics, but that’s about it. And it doesn’t matter where they are from either – still the same. But this is MY opinion.

As far as men and first impressions, don’t roll up looking like a rapper or a pimp, raggedy or like you just crawled out of bed. Be neat, clean and appropriate for the occasion.

Fashion is NOT seeing grown men with their shorts below the crack of their behinds. I’m not really a fan of those long shorts nearly touching a man’s ankles. Put some pants on, a belt at your waist and a nice pair of shoes.

When I got to her house, she was dressed super grown woman fly. When she saw me she was like “are you going like that or do you need to change?” I admit she was so fly it threw me off for a sec, and I was about to cave, but instead I just said “yep I’m good. let’s go.” we actually ended up having a good time.

@Simple Man – ime, its a little bit of everything. its color and patterns and fabric – yeah, black technically goes with everything, but black track pants with a tan, yellow, and white striped silky type shirt: not always your best option.

Simple – The reasons I say men don’t know how to dress run the gamut, including what you said. Too many to list. Choice of fabric and poor to no tayloring. Bad fit. Not knowing what patterns or colors to put together. 40 years old and still dressing like a teenager. 40 years old and don’t own at least one suit or a sport jacket. No real sense of style. The list goes on. Some are worse offenders than others.

As long as a guy doesn’t embarass me, I’m cool though. I am a little bougie, I admit it, but as long as he is neat, clean and appropriate I can deal with him. Just too often though, clothes and appearance can cause people to make snap judgements that may or may not be true. He could be a really nice, smart guy but if he rolls up looking like a thug, he may get treated as such. That would be unfortunate, but that’s life.

Fashion! That’s a laugh.

People think they’re fashionable and show up in a suit like Steve Harvey — what a clown outfit — or a dress like the Williams sisters, or some kind of slutwear — and think they look fashionable. Others think tucking in their shirt or (gasp!) wearing slacks, a sports coat or a suit is too much of a bother due to perception of comfort. Droopy pants or black-specific brands, I won’t even start.

Dress conservatively. Don’t show a lot of skin, male or female. Men should buy clothes where everything goes with everything else; that lends itself to conservative color schemes and a general lack of prints and patterns. For instance, the crisp white dress shirt is fine with slacks of any color or jeans, with or without a jacket. Wear sneakers only if participating in sports, tge Italian slippers just make you look gay, dress shoes are ones that you can polish. Purple shirts and flowers aren’t really that good a look for you, except the occasional tropical shirt and khakis or shorts at a barbecue.

As for women, no man is going to even try to tell a woman that her fashion sense is lacking. “Do these jeans make me look fat” is but a corollary to a broader concept of just saying something, anything positive about what she’s wearing. If it’s too awful, just skip it, or skip the girl.

And regardless of the *packaging*, some of us have matured to a point of attempting to look to who a person is on the inside before passing final judgement. I hate trendy anything. For me, shoes shoes shoes and if you’re not sure of what to wear go black. Black slacks, black skirt, nicely laundered crisp white shirt/blouse…nothing fancy our outlandish or overstated. If your pocket permits consider just a couple of high end pieces to switch up. I have a beautiful fan pleated shirt by RL that was 159.00 that I paid $25.00 for at Belks (Phipps)…I love that store.

What I love is a clean, crisp, well put together man….you can spot ‘em a mile off. IMO, every man needs at least ONE tailor made suite. Something sooo sexy about a man that’s wearing the right suite and it’s hitting everywhere just right…slacks hitting the shoes, jacket hitting the wrists, slacks neatly laying down in the front….mmm mmm mmm. Most guys don’t need a tailor-made suit. Off the rack and let the tailor make it fit right — that’ll do. Suit colors should be black and gray only, 2 or 3 button; a navy blazer; a few sports jackets. Polished loafers or oxfords, white shirts only with a suit! (puh-leeze… no pink or blue shirts…) and wear a tie. A suit or jacket looks stupid without a tie. If you’re going to do it, do it. If you must wear a jacket without a tie, have a button-down collar.

Fashion was never an issue for me when I was dating. I knew when to dress down and when to get truly fly. I never had any issues with the attire worn by the women I dated then either. I will admit to not owning a sport jacket, and I only have 1 suit. I don’t really go a lot of places that require me to wear a suit or sport jacket. I’m not adverse to wearing either, but I just haven’t had a pressing need to stock my closet full of them. I may try to find something new for my cousin’s wedding next month though.

My wife has never had an issue with the way I dress, so obviously I’m doing something right.

I’m very picky as to what I myself wear but for the man, ALMOST anything’s OK as long as he’s neat & clean. I do not like the pants-on-the-ground “thug” look, also don’t care for “old man” pants, sport jackets or short-sleeve, button-down shirts. Most guys don’t need a tailor-made suit. Off the rack and let the tailor make it fit right — that’ll do.

Every guy should treat himself to the experience…at least once. When I dated the stockbroker and before Lord and Taylor closed he would buy suites from there unfinished and take them to a tailor for alterations.

Thing is that dudes don’t care as much as chics do.

Dreams – Qualify that with “some dudes”. Because I have known guys that were very image-conscious and particular about how their lady dressed. In fact, one gave me particular h— about my clothes, even if we were just sitting around the house. For example, I remember when I was in grad school and dating this guy. He came over and we hadn’t decided where, if anywhere we might go. We figured we MAY go grad some food or maybe catch a movie. I showered, did my makeup & hair and had on a cute jogging suit, something I could change out of quick depending on where we decided to go. He took one look at me & told me he hated jogging suits or sweats and had I dressed like that when I went to class earlier? He said supposed he had gotten there and decided to take me out dancing? I pointed out I was ready, all I would have had to do was quickly change! And why did he have on dress shoes and high water jeans if he thought we were going somewhere fancy?

I’ve always dressed nice, but I have plenty other stories about dudes stressing out over clothes!

I briefly dated a guy who put more emphasis on his clothes than anything else. He’d buy designer clothes, shoes, cologne… even underwear. But he was always broke, broke, broke. It was tiring having to pay for US to go out. But worst of all, he judged people by their outside appearance rather than for who they were on the inside. His MO was LOOK RICH.

So I don’t date someone because they have a great wardrobe. Sometimes I force myself to look beyond a shirt I would have never put on, to see if there is more to the book than its’ cover. Usually (not always) there is so much more.

If a person does not know how to dress at a certain age, there is no need to look any further be it inside/outside/downside/upside. People need to know how to dress period:

1. Ladies know your size at 12 and a 16 is not the same.

2. Proper undergarments are key  the right bra that fit, no pantylines, slips when you need them or buy your skirts lined and a gridle if needed.

3. Stop wearing all of these baseball caps for days at a time…combing your hair is apart of your appearance.

4. Nail polish- wear it or don’t wear it…chipped polish is no cool.

5. Stop with all the faded lame t-shirts. You look sloppy, free t shirts are not always the move.

6. Put lotion on your heels and elbows, lip balm on your chapped lips and breath mints.

7. Guys match your belts and shoes

8. Guys get a haircut or a line up if you have locks and stuff

9. Fellas, stop sliding around in those nike flip flops and socks

10. Fellas guys can wear lotion too your ashy crusty fingers are scary

On topic,

Black and Gray suits should be staple in a man’s closet. White button down are a given however, a blue shirt breaks the monotony of just wearing white it just needs to be appropriate for the suit. I own a pink and lavender (or lilac) dress shirts that look good with gray dress pants, add a matching tie and you are set.

Isn’t it in the man law handbook that if a man is wearing skinny jeans, his man card is automatically suspended for a year, no review?

That’s kind of the idea, though. Let the tie be your individual statement, if you feel like you have to make one. Only wearing white shirts with a suit gives you a lot of leeway with a tie, too — all your ties will go with all your suits and jackets, if you only get stuff that all goes together.

No sagging pants, and other foolishness going on. Now what to wear..based on where we are going…you don’t need a 3 piece suit to eat a burger.

I am not a fashionista..I dress based on what is comfortable for me. I am not about keeping up with the lastest trends and colors.. I buy what matches my skin tones. Reds, Oranges, Black/White..etc. Now I have a thing for purses. I love them..and I am a bit of a purse snob…as for shoes..because I have a hard to find size I have never been one for buying and storing shoes. One of my other weakness is jewelry! Its sort of like the speed limit, when you learned to drive you were expected to follow the speed limit, but as you grow more experienced you find that you can safely travel above 55/65 mph and still avoid tickets.

I have to wear suits every day, and I would die if I had to wear a black or grey suit and a white shirt every day. They sell striped shirts, blue shirts and brown & blue suits in very upscale and conservative haberdasheries/tailor shops for a reason…(although I agree that there is no reason to ever wear a pink shirt and yes, wear a tie unless you are wearing a button down collar)

If you are a banker or a man who can’t match his clothes and/or has no sense of what patterns can be worn together then you should follow abc’s rules to be safe…LoL

No, only wear a white shirt with your navy suit. I suppose some chicks will buy you a pale blue shirt to go with it, so then wear that… but otherwise, just a white shirt with a suit.

If you wear a striped shirt, you have to wear a solid tie. A solid tie with a solid suit makes it more difficult to get colors to go together, and typically, a man doesn’t want to stand around holding ties up to this or that. A striped or patterned tie against a striped or patterned shirt is just a mess.

Simple Man, think of it like this, then: do you want to have a professional appearance, or not? What I’m talking about is a conservative and professional look, not affected by fashion trends. A man’s professional appearance (or one appropriate for a play, the symphony, dinner at Canoe or Bones/Chops, etc.) isn’t affected by fashion trends any more than a tuxedo’s appearance has changed in the past 60 or more years — other than length of tail, width of collar, number of buttons, or superficial modifications like that.

To each his own, of course. Frankly, professional or semi-formal/formal attire is probably an area not many people have an awareness of these days.

Anyone familiar with the “Gathering of the Juggalos”? They kicked Tila Tequila’s butt while she was performing. They threw feces from a porta-john and bottles. She had a cut up face and feces all over her. Also, when security tried to hide her in her trailor they attacked it as well. On the other day while Method Man was performing they cracked him in the face with a beer bottle. Juggalos are fans of the Insane Clown Posse. blue, Juggalos have a fest every year that is sponsored by the Insane Clown Posse’s Label. I did not know Tila Tequila rapped either. But they were booing her and she then took off her top and was showing her boobies while she was rapping in an effort to gain the “juggalos” awe. Well they took offense to it and started hittinh her with bottles and throwing feces at her then attacking her and her security. Method Man just got clocked about 45 seconds into his rap. There are videos of them both happening on the web. Insane Clown Posse said it was Tila’s and Method man own fault that they got attacked. Melo, I am not a Falcon fan but I was at the game. Their Secondary was not their regular players and during the preseason only people who are giving there all are 2nd and 3rd stringers and those trying to make the team. They had a good season last year and will do even better this year without all of last years injuries, plus teams don’t want to giveaway to many secrets during the preseason. I am a tad concerned with my Vikings though, Percy with health issues, Brett is back but beefing with Childress already and a few other key injuries.

They concert was just a small part of a Large Festival with outher activities. I like Method Man but I would not go to a concert to see him. Concerts are for young people imo

I like to see women dress in clothes that fit. I do not want to see your floppy t.i.t.s hanging out, please were a bra. Nor do I want to see cellulite hanging all over the place.

There was just as much fraud as there was consumer ignorance.

Poor underwriting – got a pulse, get a loan;

Poor documentation- can’t read, the “X” will do;

A lot of what happened was greed on the parties of both parts, but let’s not act like there wasn’t strong financial incentives to get people in house knowing there were going to be out in 2 years.

And another gun that he admitted was in his posession that the cops recovered ballistics matched some other shootings. And those cases are heading to trail soon. If I shoot a person and get away with it in the legal system does not mean that I am not a thug it means I just did not get caught. And here’s how I would have said it:

When you’ve captured the mind, then you’re making love. Without that, all you’re doing is blowing that back out; smacking that b!tch on her azz and shouting ‘whose puddy is this???’

I like a fit woman, in a short skirt, with a tight top. That’s just my style. Don’t mean to offend anyone.
